We're closing in on a magic number here. How should we celebrate the achievement?

Has the membership jumped since the price drop, do you know?
Maybe it is to early to see any effect from the pricing.

Nice to know I am not along. But I Have never seen anyone in public with one.

Texrat, I suggest you post a nice early info package of the fabled N900 or some other confidential info in rebellious celebratory act for the benefit of the community ;)

I imagine that might happen after we raise $15 million dollars for Texrat's retirement fund. :p

Nokia should celebrate by sending out the upcoming new tablet free to the first 9999 members. :p

Too early to tell, they probably won't find this site until they have the tablet and many will have only just ordered it.

A more interesting question would be the ratio of ITT members vs actual tablet owners...

Either way, I sold 3 of them to fence-sitters based on the buy.com deal. Numbers should be going up soon.

It's a promising sign that the tablet has gone to number 1 in Amazon's Computer section after the price cut, it shows this is a price cut that makes a desirable product more affordable rather than a desperate move to shift an unpopular item.

fpp, I'm a registered user AND a tablet owner.... ;)

krisse, you bring up an interesting idea; 9999 may be a bit high (:D) but perhaps it would be a nice "thank you" on the part of Nokia to deliver the next gen device to the first 100 or so registered AND active users on ITT, since from what I hear the next device will be intended as much as possible as a mainstream device. (gasp! run-on sentence :-/ )

Makes me wonder what number user I was to register lol. I know that I was a lurker on ITT for quite a few months before I actually registered...

Well, so am I (and obviously most of us here), but that doesn't answer my question :-)

Not trying to be the party pooper here, but how many of those "members" are one time spammers?

jzencovich
10-07-2007, 04:19 PM
Good point Karel (unfortunately :-S ) I do see ITT hit by a lot of spam :(

fpp, sure it does!

Now you know that 2/8550 of ITT's registered users own an IT. Only 8548 users left to ask!

Let me know when you get the answer :)

A bit of quick research revealed that only 1110 users have 10 or more posts, 681 users have 20 or more, 462 users have 30 or more, 351 have 40 or more. Only 275 users have more than 50 posts. On the other end of the spectrum 3737 users have NEVER posted. I myself have 36, as I read more than post. Therefore these statistics aren't entirely accurate in judging how many active users are on the site, but I would say the data models fairly close to reality.

I don't mean to burst anyone's bubble (sorry if I do! :( ) but I think we have a long way to go/work to get 10,000 active Internet Tablet users.

A bit of good news, I would say with a good amount of confidence that we have at least one THOUSAND Internet Tablet users on ITT, with countless more lurking about. That's a lot of users collaborating together to make an open product better :)

Well, as you can probably tell my tongue was planted firmly in my cheek when I said it ;)

What came to mind though is what Nokia is doing with their official N-Gage forums. They're relaunching N-Gage as a gaming platform across their smartphone range, and they organised some online activities where both participation and accomplishment earn points. The points accumulate over time and at the end 300 people get free games, and 30 people get free N-gage compatible smartphones.

It's not quite the same situation here, but I quite like the idea of the people paying attention getting rewarded in some way.

I won't get it this way, 'cause that's not the question I asked :-)

My point was, out of all the people who actually own a 770 or N800, how many actually know of ITT's existence, and have created an account here ? Half ? A fifth ? One in ten ? etc. ...

So you see I'm not going going to answer it by asking around here. Nokia could help by releasing global tablet sales, but I guess that's a trade secret :-)

krisse
10-07-2007, 06:18 PM
Even if someone owns a tablet AND knows of ITT's existence, that doesn't mean they'll post here. I know lots of people who regularly read particular forums but never post, there really are armies of lurkers out there.

Perhaps Reggie could provide stats on how many users have visited the forum on more than 10 seperate occassions which should eliminate spammers and the simply curious users that are not actual NIT owners (assuming owners come back more often than 10 visits).

Ok, here are some forum stats (from January to September):

New Members:
452

New Threads:
453

New Replies:
454

And some site stats on unique visitors -- which gives us an idea on how many unique members + guests visiting the site:

Blimey, looking at the unique visitors it's easy to see when the cheap 770's came on the market!

Thanks Reggie!

I guess that every owner of an NIT visits this site at least once using his tablet. From the logs just count the accounts which were ever used with a tablet browser and voila...

Yeah... Presumably that effect will be even greater now that the N800 has had its US price cut too.

Reggie
10-07-2007, 07:34 PM
I agree. Expect more members coming this month due to the N800 price break as well as if the new tablet is announced.

One more stat -- browsers and operating systems being used by the visitors. We can somehow see how many are using a NIT:

Thanks Reggie for the cool stats. I guess with the N900 looming we might get another burst of traffic, maybe long-term traffic since the "N900" is supposed to be for the mainstream. (Might need more servers :p )

Sorry fpp, it appears I misunderstood your question after all. I thought you were asking the exact opposite. Though it's good to note that the latest firmwares come with ITT as one of the bookmarks if I'm not mistaken. Therefore, a good percentage of N800 users will most probably see ITT.

I don't know what system you're using for stats, but is there any way for you to see individual distributions? Or perhaps the screen resolution? or perhaps how many have a Java VM?

You could try to cross-reference the data to find out how many of those Opera Linux and Mozilla Linux are actual tablets and not desktops.

Based on stats that I generate on sites that do about 20 million hits per day, I'd bet that the vast majority of Opera/Linux users are Nokia Tablets. That combination doesn't show up the radar of any stats that I've seen.

Any idea how microb is reported? Mozilla / Linux maybe?

Milhouse
10-09-2007, 03:09 PM
Mozilla, Firefox and Linux, to be precise:

Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux armv6l; en-GB; rv:1.9a6pre) Gecko/20070810 Firefox/3.0a1 Tablet browser 0.1.16 RX-34_2007SE_4.2007.26-8

It contains the string "Tablet browser" and "RX-34" which might make it easier to grep. I wonder if any "RX-44" user agents have made an appearance? :)

I'd be interested in a breakdown by number of visits - I reckon anyone who visits a forum such as this more than 10 times either owns a device or is thinking seriously about buying one...

Texrat
10-09-2007, 03:23 PM

The "stats" panel at the bottom of the forum index page shows 9,997 members. However the membership list page shows 8620 members.

Even more strange, the latest member's user id number is a little over 10,000.

There you are, three different figures. :)

My guess: Deleted users aren't counted as members. At the same time, their user id numbers aren't recycled. So, having users with id numbers higher than 10,000 without 10,000 current accounts just takes Reggie bouncing on the delete key a few times.

As for "stats" and the member list counting differently, I'm less sure. Could they be counting locked/banned accounts differently?

Hurrah, the stats box now says 10,001 members!

Just another 1380 to go on the members list and we can open the second bottle of champagne.
