searching the web on one of those days.
came across facebook friendly iphone link.
Works pretty good on both opera and microb, and very fast on loading.
So I decided to see what other links were iphone friendly.
and came across http://iPhoneAppr.com/iphone/
lots of iphone friendly links on this site.
Hmm, I own an internet tablet, where's my N800 friendly sites.
The Itouch is definitely on my Xmas wishlist now.
For those of you who want to try some of these links out on the n800/maybe770.

The Internet Tablet Talk site has just acquired an internet tablet friendly theme which is great :) I would expect some really nice iPhone themes to appear for vBulletin and other forum software, such support is indicative of how well Apple market their products and how Nokia are letting the oppurtunities pass them by.

Web browsing is great on the n800.
but sampling some of the iphone friendly links, found out that some of them
load really quick, and work pretty good in microb, minor crashes.
same goes for the opera browser, but the side scrolling, eye candy doesn't work.
bookmarked a couple of the ones I know I will be using.
but nokias marketing department need to step their game up.

Web browsing is generally good on the N800 but some sites (such as forums) can still be CPU intensive and/or bandwidth hungry, the very reasons why iPhone optimisations are appearing. I wouldnt want to access the full-fat ITT forum on a laptop over a slow dial-up Bluetooth/mobile connection let alone an N800 but the new themes means I'm much more likely to do so in future. Hopefully N800/770 users will benefit from the iPhone optimisations!

When, If the OWB browser is finished, the iphone friendly sites will work very nicely on the N800/770.
Any news on this browser?

Maybe everyone already knows of it, but it wasn't in that list: the BBC provices their news site in a few formats:
Normal version:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/
Low-graphics:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/text_only.stm
PDA version (similar but with a drop-down menu for navigation):
http://news.bbc.co.uk/nolpda/ukfs_news/hi/default.stm
as well as a WAP version.
iphone = apple's newest up and coming cashcow.
internet tablet = nokia's R&D project == running cost.
Don't expect things to change much while those status stay that way.
bah, give me sites that only use javascript when absolutely needed, and ill be happy.
after google and ajax, i have seen so many overloaded pages pop up its not even funny. and this, does not help at all imo.
Did you hear of all the porn site what make there pages "Wii friendly" within days of the Internet Channel been launched.
why am i not surprised...

As I mentioned in another post, I have discovered there are valid reasons for the subdued approach. That is not to say it will always be as it is now. However, that said, Nokia will likely not emulate Apple 100% in marketing hype, at least not in every region. There has been no need for it with many products and many markets.

Even with my 770, I found only a few sites difficult to use. What I find funny is that, rather than make the iPhone capable of handling "real" websites, they encourage websites to kowtow and make iPhone friendly versions. Like, YouTube... A lot of people claim the iPhone does flash because it supports YouTube... but it's actually YouTube supporting the iPhone by providing some (but not all) videos in H.264 format.
I love my tablet, it works with the web just fine.
And the only problem I ever had with this forum is the inability to post a reply. browsing it (and may other online forums) works just fine.

I'm sure you're right Tex, and I'm intrigued to see how Nokia intend to change in future. Unless there is a DRAMATIC change, it will be interesting to review the "valid reasons for a subdued approach" in 12-18 months time once the Internet Tablet market that Nokia created is flooded with far-Eastern made Intel-based MID devices supported by vast marketing budgets and effective marketing departments, not to mention Intel-friendly review sites, magazines and blogs - I can already visualise the first "Intel MID Group Test"!! Meanwhile, Nokia Internet Tablets will be where, exactly? Still struggling to justify their existence even more so than at the moment? Are they media devices? Or internet tablets? Or are they simply toys (as they have been described on several occasions) since there is no PIM, thus no POINT?
The "N900" and Chinook (particularly Chinook) had better blow the socks off the world... or it's goodnight Vienna for Nokia.
Seriously, if the next Nokia NIT device comes with another lousy and unusable camera, outdated and clumsy design, p1ss poor video (with no accelerated 3D support even though the hardware is present, which of course will be fully utilised on the Intel devices), a cruddy touchscreen and worst of all, unfinished/low quality shipping software (eg. Email, RSS reader, not to mention the lack of PIM which I'm sure will be on Intel MIDs from the start if not within a short space of time) then Nokia should give it up because they simply won't be in the game any longer.
And I truly hate to make this judgement, but it seems everything so far has been (and still is) an uphill struggle for Nokia - I really can't see how they can continue that struggle once a competitor such as Intel appears on the scene.
Nokia need to make a decision: Get the resources and finances behind their Internet Tablets - and drop the corporate politics bullsh1t which is stifling the development of Maemo and NITs - or get out of the market. A continued subdued approach will become a slow and painful suicide, the beta test period for NITs is now well and truly over and Nokia need to step up a gear if not two. Top quality releases (both hardware and software) is what Nokia need to provide in the next 6-9 months, and nothing less (unless it's flagged up as a beta of course in which case I'm happy to participate!) :)
The way I see it, the only hope for Nokia is that the power/battery performance on the Intel MID devices sucks *really* bad, like sub 3.5 hours, or they're really heavy due to a large battery to ensure adequate run time. Or they're ridiculously expensive, like $500+. However, I'd put money on Intel not screwing up.
EDIT: Apologies for the OT rant... got a bit carried away! :)

I really wish I could say more. I argued in the same vein you are Mil but after consideration of counterpoints I had to concede the point-- which isn't natural for me. :D
Patience. ;)
Oh, and don't worry about Nokia regarding a "struggle". What was that global phone market share again? Heh.
what i find most funny is that while there have been tools and similar available to make pages work with all phones available. only now that apple puts their gorilla in the field does everyone jump to and make stuff available. and even then its aimed only at that device, and not devices in general...
I don't see why everyone calls Apple "gorilla"... based on quick employee count comparison they look pretty small when compared to Nokia:
- Apple: 17787
- Nokia: 109871
(Employee numbers are from Etrade web site...)
For reference... Even Intel is a small player: 90300 employees!
Just to put things into some perspective...
(Yes, there is a "glitch" in Nokia numbers... anyone know what is that? ;) )
Yes, it is amazing how such a small company like Apple has such a big effect? Nokia certainly can learn something...

I had been thinking the same way myself, but recent discussions and reflections have led me to understand that there is room for both approaches. The general success of each company, in its own manner, is proof enough for me.

OK, I'll have to trust you on this one Tex - I'll try to keep my powder dry and my fingers crossed in the hope that Nokia are going to blow us away in the coming months.
Personally, I really hope Nokia begin to integrate their phones and internet tablets - not at the hardware level, but at the software level as Palm attempted with the Foleo. Nokia Internet Tablets need additional unique selling points in this evolving market place - offering access to the web is pretty passe, even today! :)

Yet Nokia struggle in the US by all accounts. Look at the hype (much of it real) surrounding the (so far) US-only iPhone and you can tell how important the US market is to technology firms, particularly where cutting edge and embrionic technology is concerned. Nokia have a lot of ground to make up.

These discussions get so heated!
I must say that I find my N800 collecting dust regardless of whether I can install apps on it.
I still browse these forums on my iPhone to see what's happening in the Internet tablet world, but I haven't been too impressed.
I make my calls, listen to tunes, browse and now pump videos onto my tv from one device that is 11mm thick. I do miss small things like ScummVM, but the **** I had to put up with wasn't worth it.
If Nokia revamps or reinvents the IT I'll look into switching back. But as it stands? Its fairly mediocre, hopefully their next model is greatly improved.

I've already explained that one, too. Nokia used to OWN the US market, years ago, so we're not talking a static situation. The company then tried to change the carrier oppression, and competitors took advantage of it instead of recognizing the chance to break free of the burden.
These discussions get so heated!

With all due respect, sherifnix, that's simply your outlook, and not foregone universal fact. Many others feel very strongly to the contrary (although some agree with you, I realize).
Oh, and no heat in my posts. I enjoy this back-and-forth, especially with my buddy Mil. ;)

Actually the US is distinctly UN-influential when it comes to mobile phones.
-The market penetration of mobiles in the US is way below that in European or Asian countries, I haven't got the figures but I seem to remember it's not even in the top 20. An awful lot of people in America don't care about mobiles and don't own one. Britain by contrast has a market penetration of over 100%, there are more mobiles than people.
-The speed and coverage of US phone networks is backwards compared to the rest of the developed world, with a surprising number of Americans still using analogue 1G networks until a few years ago, and an even more surprising number still without coverage at all. 3G networks have only just been appearing on a large scale in the USA while the rest of the rich world has had wide 3G coverage for many years. And it's not a population density issue either, Finland has half the population density of the USA but it has almost complete geographical network coverage.
-Text messaging became a way of life in the rest of the world many years ago, but the US lagged behind largely because so many American carriers refused to exchange messages with each other.
-Carriers in America put a stranglehold on technological development, doing their best to stifle things like sim-free handsets, bluetooth (because it allowed users to download free ringtones from their PC) and even wifi. As recently as last year, some major handsets had to have wifi removed for their US release because the US carriers felt threatened by the idea that the user could use it for free internet access.
-The typical American handset lags behind handsets that are taken for granted in Asia and Europe, largely due to the American carrier sabotage detailed above. The iPhone has an acclaimed interface but no one has ever praised its tech specs or feature set. The idea of releasing a very expensive internet-oriented phone without 3G or 3.5G seems crazy to Europeans and Asians, it would be like releasing a high definition television that only works in black-and-white. Everywhere has carrier sabotage to some extent, but the problem seems particularly acute in the US. For example Japan has a very strong carrier hardware monopoly like America, but they have had fewer problems allowing innovation into handsets.
-The largest American phone maker, Motorola, just slipped into third place behind Asian and European companies, and there are no other American phone makers in the top 5, they're all Euro or Asian. It's too early to tell where Apple fits into that, 1 million isn't a significant figure in 1 billion+ a year phone sales.
As for Apple, while their designs might be influential and their marketing machine capable of gathering a huge amount of coverage in the Western press, the numbers just aren't there to call them a global company in the way established mobile phone makers are.
Apple's computers have had a loyal but tiny market share for the past 10 to 15 years, and their iPods have sold something like 150 million over the past 6 years. Nokia alone sells 350 million phones every single year.
Apple's sales are generally confined to small numbers of rich people, while phone makers' sales serve large numbers of people all across the world, most of them in poor countries.
In 2006 Apple boasted that the iTunes service sold its 1 billionth track (which was itself only about 10 tracks per iPod sold at the time). Nokia by contrast was able to boast about selling its 1 billionth phone back in 2005, sold to a Nigerian ( http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/09/21/nokia_one_billion_nigeria/ ). These are companies operating in totally different worlds.
I'm not criticising Apple here, just trying to put into perspective what they've achieved: a cult status in tech circles, popularity with a globally small number of rich people, a dominance of the standalone music player market, but not a worldwide presence in ordinary people's lives. There are lots of African villages that possess $40 mobile phones, but very few that have even seen $300 music players or the $500 PCs needed to fill them with.
Most mobile phones are sold for phone calls only, not the extras. The average sale price of a mobile phone is something like $100 and dropping, and the majority of phone sales are now in developing countries. Apple has never been a success in that part of the world or in that part of the market. To become important in the phone world Apple need to reinvent themselves, stop concentrating entirely on expensive headline-grabbing flashy gadgets and start making basic reliable devices at a price that people can afford to pay.

iPhone friendly websites? I think that's hilarious, considering that one of the main selling points of the iPhone is a "real web browser." If we're limited to "mobile" sites, we might as well be using Blackberries or Treos with (ugh!) Blazer.

maybe a IT Friendly websites thread should be started.
Bah, it just dawned on me that many of these pages are not so much pages as they are web-apps...

Another off-topic suffix, to compliment what Milhouse said... here's a screenshot of the MID's Hildon-based Clutter-driven prototype home screen:

That kind of thing is already much more usable than Maemo, yet using the same underlying base. Perhaps the more-up-to-date GTK+ in Chinook will enable this, but I think moblin's benefiting from a less constrained outlook on the world, rather than copying old 7710 or desktop metaphors.
(Oh, and on the point about Nokia not going bust or similar; no, but the Internet Tablets are effectively a separate company, they'll live or die on their success, the parent isn't going to subsidise them forever unless their really the secret strategy for Nokia's future... but there's no sign of that).

Very well-thought and detailed post, krisse. Given that you've also posted criticisms of Nokia you come across as very objective... that's helpful.
As an American working for a foreign (to us anyway) company and who occasionally travels abroad on business, I am embarrassed at how we are losing our technological edge. It's not just in phones, either, but in other areas. For a long time we took the approach of function over form, and let Europe come up with all the slick designs. Now we're slacking on function, too. Eventually China and India will shame us greatly. We have only ourselves to blame, too, with our fairly recent emphasis in education on testing over actual learning. I knew years ago that was going to bite us in the collective butt one day...
In this situation, Apple is a fluke, and I truly hope our industries realize sooner or later that it should not be.
