I realize this is totally premature since the 2008OS is so new but will there be a Hacker Edition of it (eventually) for use on the N770?

It's planned, yes.

I'm glad to hear it. I don't own a 770, but would be quite upset to learn that my 770 brethren are being left behind.

Thumbs up to Nokia for 2k8 on the 770.

Ah, the bliss of missing the 770 OS Wars.

If this is the new way, my opinion is that Nokia learned very well from previous lesson :)
Proud 770-800 and future 810 owner (and some nice ideas for a new pim prog... if only finding some spare time!!!)

Wow really ?!?
I suppose it'll be another hacker edition, right ?

Yes. The promise was a bit vague and the release day may be far away but let's hope we'll see it.
For some details see 'What's next' here http://maemo.org/news/announcements/view/1189171468.html
last time it was mentioned here

Personally I hope the difference between 2008 and 2006 is so big it will make sense to finally ditch old 2.6.16 kernel in favor of 2.6.21 (or whatever comes with release version of OS2008 for N800 and 810). The kernel switch is a lot of work but it may be similar to work needed for patching OS2008 userspace stuff to work with old kernel.

it was mentioned in this vein:
As commented when we announced the last 2006 Hacker Edition, there are
plans and ongoing work to bring the HE up to Chinook levels. Note that
this is not the same as offering the OS2008 for the 770.

does that mean we're probably not gonna get a nice tidy package to install?

I suspect Quim means that OS2008HE on 770 will not be the same as OS2008 on N8x0, in the same way that OS2007HE is not the same as OS2007, yet both OS2007/OS2007HE firmwares are Bora compatible which means most applications built for OS2007 will install and run without complaint. Provided OS2008HE is compatible with Chinook, most applications built for the OS2008 on N8x0 will work just fine on the 770.

I guess Quim may also be trying to manage expectations by not promising some of the latest kernel features present in OS2008 which may not be possible (or too expensive to implement) on 770, such as dynamic frequency scaling etc.

As has been the case thus far, OS2008HE may be a mixture of the old and the new, which is better than nothing! :)

Actually I'm quite surprised by the simple and unconditional "Yes" to this question. I'd never have expected another release for the 770 after OS2007HE.

What I'd like to know:
Will the 2008HE be easier to do now devs learned from the 2007HE? Is there some kind of "how to create a 770 HE"-blueprint that they can follow? Or will they have to start all over again, investing the same amount of time and research to do it?

Having accidentally started a thread about 2008HE, I am very pleased the 770 will not be left behind! 2007HE was a triumph, and I hope that the lessons learned will mean 2008HE will be less hard work.

But, no.

I am pretty impressed too; not just because of they achieved it but also because of all the hard work required despite the nay-sayers who doubted them!

...of which I was, same time last year, I must confess. To me, keeping that promise is the most important part, aside from how OS2008HE actually fares on poor old 770...

Anybody installed it yet and checked it out? I'm going for it. Installing as we speak (as I type)

...well, so far it's working just fine. I've installed,
restored my backed up settings,
expanded the virtual memory,
used the xterm to copy files back over from MMC,
and am now browsing the net on a wireless connection that my previous OS2007HE couldn't stay connected to.

It is defninitely SLOWer than before. Not seeming as unstable or unusable as they made it sound, however.

I've now installed Gizmo Project (ver 4.0). It remembered my old account information from the backups. Logged in and I am listening to my voicemails. The odd thing is that the volume is incredibly quiet..no matter what volume I crank to the max, it is just barely audible...which actually works out just fine for holding the speaker up to your ear like a cellphone...but it will suck for streaming last.fm and such.

The Load Applet also installed just fine.

Maemo Mapper also installed and works just fine.

Both are available in the Application Manager with the stock list of repositories.

Installing UKMP made it endlessly reboot.

After an entire afternoon of ****ing around, I'm thinking it's not worth it. It cuts the responsiveness of nearly everything by about a fraction of a second or so..which may not seem like much, but it is. I feel like I'm on a 286 trying desperately to run King's Quest VI. The guy moves around all jerky and you can't tell if or if ever things are going to respond.

I'm going back to the latest 2007HE in the hopes that I can cram Gizmo 4.0 on it somehow and it won't crash every time i hang up anymore.

well, gogol, thanks for posting a followup. I guess there's still a bit to do. I was running original OS on my 770, recently tried the latest 2007HE and found it slower.. I'm not giving up hope, the OS-HE people are pulling off miracles and I'm sure they can make 2008he usable, but miracles don't happen overnight

well well now! miracles can happen! after using os2008 for a while i noticed the cpu was at 100 all the time...due to a process called metalayer-crawler. after reading another post about this, i did the following:

open xterminal
sudo gainroot (install becomeroot if you haven't already)
cd /usr/bin
mv metalayer-crawler metalayer-crawler.sux
reboot

after doing that, os2008 is becoming quite usable! been on it all morning without any hangups or crashes. (im typing this from it)

also, installing adblock speeds up browsing tremendously.

now i can actually hang up a call in gizmo without it crashing, install all manner of greasemonkey scripts, and even check voicemail with the built-in SIP client.

ive successfully installed the following:
maemo mapper
gizmo 4
adblock plus
greasemonkey
flash 9
cpu monitor/process killer (i forget it's name)
...possibly others i cant recall. all work as well and often better than previously in 2007HE.

what's that dang metalayer-crawler doing with 100% cpu anyhow? it was draining battery life horribly and making the unit reboot quite a bit too.

anyhow, after that fix, i'm a satisfied user of the new OS ! thank you.

metalayer-crawler is the media search daemon of the built in media player. You can do well without it :)

Mmm, love the sudden ajaxification of the forum :D

any news on os2008he? I just got a 2GB memory card for my 770 so that I can make better use of it, and os2008he would be a good start!

keep up the good work!

any updates? I've been hacking around on my 770 to use as internet radio player and messenger for wife and it'd be nice if it could catch up somewhat... or maybe I should wait for DIABLO-HE? :-)

It's not entirely clear (to me) that there will be a Diablo HE produced; they said something in the OS2008 release about realizing this is as far as the HEs can go, but as Diablo is still a OS2008 variant, it's still possibly included.

Thank you a million times for the hack to Metalayer.
Tried removing it in 2007 HE and it too is now faster!
Will now try 2008 HE,because I want Fring. Many thanks!
