(wow, just realized how unreadable the subject line is when one's typing it under the new theme -- grey on black)
It's a tradition among some OSS communities (Firefox, GNOME) to hold release parties whenever a major release is launched. I'm wondering if people are interested in doing something similar? It'll be less coordinated -- Maemo and IT200x tablet users being not as numerous as yet -- but would be quite fun.
Here's what I'm thinking would be neat:
- Maemo / Internet tablet T-shirts. Has anyone designed any? Are they available on CafePress or other shirt printers? How good is the quality? (Would be neat if they do silkscreen printing, smoother and won't flake off when washed)
- N810 videos. I'm hearing that the OS2008 release for N800 won't be out for a week or two after N810 is launched, and it will take several days for shipping anyway, so would it be possible to get the bundled video through other means?
- Beer/wine/beverage of choice
- Live blogging on #itT at Jaiku, etc.
Anyone interested in setting up release parties? I'll do it for the Indiana University campus -- also, anyone know of a better alternative than eVite / Facebook events?

There are maemo tee-shirts available at the Nokia Research Center (NRC), but I'm not sure just how available they are. Quim Gil will have to answer that one.

Cool! So it's just a matter of asking whoever designed the shirt to get the permission to sell them online..

I wouldn't mind buying a maemo TShirt but I suppose I'd be alone in La Rochelle for partying ... ;)

Posted a note to Quim on jaiku #n800 channel.
I wish the Irving (Dallas) site was hosting a launch party...

munky: I actually know someone else on campus -- we were talking about VPN issues on itT, and bumped into each other on the bus wen I was carrying the tablet (it's a small world). Can't remember his handle -- was that you?
I'll take an itT t-shirt too if it comes in stylish black. Reggie? And to supplement physical parties, perhaps we can persuade thoughtfix to do a virtual party -- he already has the video rig and the N810, after all :)

potato: we could meet in the middle and I could bring some drunk rabies infested Toronto raccoons. Otherwise I think I'll party on my own once I actually get my hands on one. :)

I'd be willing to host a party in Redmond, WA: I'd even supply beer and some kind of wings. :)

alone in La Rochelle
Ordinarily, I'd be delighted to have an excuse to revisit La Rochelle but last Friday I went to Bordeaux for the day to catch a lunchtime concert by the Trio Mephista (http://www.sylviecourvoisier.com/projects.htm). Unfortunately, because the TGV was over an hour late, I missed the whole :mad::mad::confused::eek::mad: thing. I was so furious with SNCF that I couldn't even enjoy the rest of my afternoon in Bordeaux (and the train coming back was also late). Anyway, I'm afraid that's used up my quota of pointless excursions till at least February.

For some reason I initially parsed that as "200 kgs of ..." and filled the blank in with potatoes :P
Which reminds me.. will probably do the Bloomington, IN release party in the one and only Irish pub in town. They do coddle, meath (spelled mead here -- Anglicized spelling?) and, for some odd reason, escargots..

Gah, and that was before the rail workers' strike officially begun, right? *sigh*

So that's you, me and.. who's the third mystery host? BOFH?
aleks: hey, Newsvine (social news/journalism site) is based in Seattle. Perhaps they'll be interested in a mobile blogging device.
