I downloaded ubuntu 7.10 and burnt a disk. Then i ran the disk and installed(not in the true sense) ubuntu using install ubuntu option. This will not install ubuntu completely on to your system. In fact it does nothing to the previous operating system you have.
since wifi wont work immediatly i used a ethernet cable to download both the 0s2008 bin file and the 3.0 flasher for x86. now go to applications and open xterm and follow the instructions on the cnet site....http://www.cnet.com/surveillance-state/8301-13739_1-9816300-46.html?tag=head
Just one thing extra.
After opening do the following

cd Desktop
chmod a+x ./flasher-3.0
./flasher-3.0 -u -F RX-44_2008SE_1.2007.42-18_PR_COMBINED_MR0_ARM.bin
after unpacking

sudo ./flasher-3.0 --enable-rd-mode
sudo ./flasher-3.0 -k zImage -f
sudo ./flasher-3.0 -n initfs.jffs2 -f
sudo ./flasher-3.0 -r rootfs.jffs2 -f -R

And that is it you are done.
I am a linux noob and i assure you tat it is a lot easier than it looks.

And dont worry about bricking it... just follow the instructions and you will hvae os2008.

Thanks for posting this.

I assume the following: -

Ubuntu is booted to run from the cd and is used purely in order to run flasher-3.0?

The files flasher-3.0 and RX-44_2008SE_1.2007.42-18_PR_COMBINED_MR0_ARM.bin are located in the Desktop folder on your (Windows) pc?

The commands
cd Desktop
chmod a+x ./flasher-3.0
./flasher-3.0 -u -F RX-44_2008SE_1.2007.42-18_PR_COMBINED_MR0_ARM.bin
are from the Linux Ubuntu terminal?

The commands
sudo ./flasher-3.0 --enable-rd-mode
sudo ./flasher-3.0 -k zImage -f
sudo ./flasher-3.0 -n initfs.jffs2 -f
sudo ./flasher-3.0 -r rootfs.jffs2 -f -R
are from the N800 terminal?

Is this correct?

No everything is from the ubuntu terminal.
Everything else is correct.

Wait... the files of both flasher and the bin should be on the ubuntu desktop!!

Thanks for the clarification.

OK I guess I need to burn my Gutsy Gibbon cd and get stuck in.

Thanks again.

I've been with Ubuntu for 11 months now, by far the longest continuous Linux install I've had in 10 yrs. It's ready for home. Seriously. (I just threw it onto some computer illiterate friends' laptop and am watching it closely. It's about 3x faster than XP was... before it cacked on them.)

If you want to skip needing to do "sudo" before each command, you can probably just do sudo su, which sets the terminal into "superuser" mode, which gives root privileges. I haven't used Ubuntu though, so I'm not entirely sure.

and the 3.0 flasher for x86.

Now where do I find this?
I downloaded the PuppyLinux and still am looking for the flasher...
Anyone with a good link?
Cheers,

one quick question.

Once you hookup the USB cable with N800, will ubuntu automatically recognize the device?

is there anything visually appears confirms that N800 is connected fine?

I am planning to run ubuntu with my VMWare, any complication?

Thanks,

One way to keep a permanent installation of Ubuntu for windows users would be to install it in a vmplayer image. You can download free vmplayer from here (http://www.vmware.com/products/player/) and even a pre-built vmplayer image for Ubuntu gutsy from here (http://www.vmware.com/appliances/directory/1068).

For my experience:
Yes, Ubuntu will automatically recognize the device, you do not have to mount the device or anything.
For flashing to work, you will need to start the nokia device by pushing the power and the "home" keys simultaneously, so Ubuntu won't show you it is attached. Normally, it will show the SD card slots as individual drives. When you start typing the "sudo" commands the terminal text will tell you that it found the device.

Not sure how ubuntu and VMWare works...

Using the method described by sachin007, it worked without a hitch.

thanks! it worked for me. Very easy to do with a bootable cd. Copy and paste in terminal makes it more easy.

Took a few hours for me and i almost bricked my N800 (no thanks to Parallels), but VMWare Fusion saved the day.

I'm loving it so far, but several websites seem to crash the browser, websites i had to problems with.

Someone try going to pdaphonehome.com and see if the browser crashes?

Oh, and waaaaaaa, where's the FM radio?

I used my copy of Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon to boot from, followed the instructions and it all worked a treat.

Hey please tell me if the OS2008 will do A2DP or Gizmo while using a Bluetooth Heaset. THANKS !!

It should do Gizmo over a bluetooth headset, but for now its not entirely working properly. It pairs, routes the audio to the headset, but the headset isn't playing it.

Update: worked perfectly fine with ubuntu with VMWare. I had the vmimage of Ubuntu, followed the instructions and booom.

Thanks guys, I am loving the new OS.

one thing I noticed, if you have a charger hooked up with the N800 and you try to reboot with Home button ON, it will boot as normal i.e. won't goto the USB mode at all, so make sure that you already charged N800 before you Flash it.

I test the gizmo work fine, no crash so far(not with the bluetooth headset as I don't have one :( ).

IIRC to install gizmo you go to "communications" program menu and run "Gizmo (Video & IM)", it will install itself.

Hey Guys!

I'm uploading with parallels and fedora...And it is not going well... :(

Is it normal to take ages to upload initfs.jffs2 ?

the VM looks looked but the USB icon is blinking (albeit slowly)...

I tried to use ubuntu with parallels (and Leopard) without success...

So how have been the process for you? Smother?

Ciao, :D

I don't think it took more than a second for initfs.jffs2 here.

Did you try the OSX flasher? or is that PPC only..

Flashing went great for me on my old Powerbook (with the 2.0 osx flasher), and with the 3.0 linux flasher on my Ubuntu desktop.

Dblank... i get part of the way into flashing with the 2.0 osx flasher and it just sits there.

is there a trick to it? i'm on a Quicksilver G4.

Which part do you get to?

This is how I flashed mine:

Turn off N800, disconnect power cable
plug in USB cable
hold home key while plugging in power cable
(keep holding home key until flashing starts)
./flasher-2.0.macosx -k zImage -f
./flasher-2.0.macosx -n initfs.jffs2 -f
./flasher-2.0.macosx -r rootfs.jffs2 -f -R

Unfortunately the mac command line flasher is PPC only and the terminal, even in rosetta mode, refuse to launch it (bad cpu type).

I don't understand the problems I'm having with parallels (ubutu and kubunt crashes of xserver during boot time; unable to install parallels addons in my Fedora VM, flasher with intfs.jffs2...)

btw I'm downloading the VMWare image (hopefully it will work, when converted, with parallels)

Yes, that file is PPC only (as mentioned in the same page) :( When we will have a universal binary?? ;)

Try to do the OS2008 update again without restoring your backup once asked during the first bootup. I had similar problems and that fixed the browser crashing problem (I was running some earlier build of the MicroB on OS2007 before). And yes, pdaphonehome.com works fine.

I have the same problem with gizmo. I can't make SIP calls too. I have flashed my n800 to os2008 once again , but it didn't help.:(

You don't need to install Gizmo. Use it as a SIP account. Instructions are on the RTCOMM site.
