I wanted this so bad I spent a lot of time patching it. I thought others would want it too.
Warning: This is ALPHA quality!
Deb for OS2008 here. (http://www.ee.nmt.edu/~james.smith/mplayer_1.0rc2_chinook.deb)
To download this you must press and hold, then select save target as. Sorry, but school web hosting isn't that good.
My low quality patches here. (http://www.ee.nmt.edu/~james.smith/mplayer_1.0rc2_patches.tgz)
This is MPlayer 1.0rc2, which has better seeking in flv files. Conveniently, my quick port update has seeking trouble.

How does it work?
Hehe, so simple solution for this compile error :)
Does Your MPlayer work similary to n800 version?
Ehh, anyway I will test it soon.

I've installed it on OS2008 on a N800. It runs but I get screen tearing near the bottom of the display and it doesn't seem as smooth as the version I used to run.

I ran it too; maybe that 'slowness' is due to changes between rc1 and rc2. Thay made some changes in pixel rendering.

It probably won't be as smooth. I didn't add any cpu optimizations to this, but it seems that some of Serge's optimizations are now upstream. My patches are pieces of the patch from garage. Stuff has changed in mplayer so I had to modify the patch text.
I got the current version on the mplayer maemo site to work by symlinking a dbus lib to look like the older version from OS2007. It's hackish, but it works fine so far.

chgu,
good point.
Solution: install mplayer package from this thread, decompress garage mplayer package, copy mplayer to n800 and link libdbus :)
Works great, Not coming back to 2007 :)
You can also go to xterm and do a forced install of the garage mplayer.
dpgk -i --force-all mplayer_pacakge.deb
ln -s /usr/lib/libdbus-1.so.3 /usr/lib/libdbus-1.so.2
There was another lib for the gui to work, I think. Maybe not.

Yes, gmplayer needs libhildonfm.so.1. Anyway, I use gmplayer form this post's .deb.
