Well, I kept telling myself that I was just going to stay with my N800, but I knew all along I was just fooling myself and not doing a very good job of it, for that matter. I am now the proud owner of an N810, this is my third-generation IT.
I decided to stop by my local CompUSA store in the hopes that maybe they had them. It's not listed on their website at all, not even for pre-ordering. This was the same thing as when I got my N800 from them last January within the first few days they were released. First guy I asked looked like he had no idea what the heck I was talking about, like I was speaking another language. I didn't like his vague "we don't have it yet" answer, so I went back to Business Sales and asked someone who was a bit more on the ball.
Turns out they have had them for a few days, but were not selling them until they were told to do so. I was the first person to ask, so I told them they officially went on sale today, so they looked it up and said OK. The bar code would not even scan, it's not in their system yet, but it did pull up the price of $479.99 when they input the UPC manually.
So I bought it on the spot, knowing full well I could have saved a few bucks if I didn't mind waiting a week or so via mail order. Figured it's safer this way, in case there is a problem with the unit...so far so good, everything works great! Plus, I get the ever important instant gratification :-)
If you're in a hurry to get one, check your local CompUSA store...they probably have them. If my store here in San Antonio got them this quick, then I'm sure most other cities got them, as well.

With the low dollar exchange rate $480 is way less than what I paid for the N800 back in January.. didn't think of that until I did the calculation! I probably paid somewhere around $520 with today's exchange rate, taxes _not_ included. And I thought the N810 was more expensive than the N800 when introduced.. seems I was wrong, but then again I haven't seen any European prices quoted yet! :)

Being next to the U.S. (Canada) and having a dollar that is still worth more than the U.S. one, I can get some minor savings... but unless I get really creative, I'm stuck paying 8% duty upon bringing it back across the border.

Sounds familiar. I keep telling myself that OS2008 on my N800 gets me all the important bits of the N810, but, well, the N810 is just so much purtier.
Thank goodness my "local" CompUSA is an hour and a half away, and I don't travel in that direction often. Heck, the last time I was at CompUSA, it was to buy a VL-Bus multi-IO card.
Anyway, have fun with your new toy!

I couldn't help myself. Just got back from the Nokia store in Manhattan. Charging it up as I type this. Very happy I bought it. What a difference in hand. Feels good. Loving the car mount in the box, not loving the "case".

Just got my unit from the NYC store too yesterday.
I would usually drive to work, but today I took the train in the morning, so at least I can play on the new device while on the train(don't want to do the same while driving ).
I told them about the $75 disciunt theu lets talk, but the Store would only sell for the full rpice - no discounts at the store.
But still worth the joy of actually holding it in my hands.

I thought that electronics were duty free under NAFTA. You still will pay GST and PST (or HST, depending...)

I didn't see you buy anything in the US ;) You took the N810 with you on the trip to find your way around in the US :)
Plus aren't you allowed to buy up to $500-$1000 of stuff abroad without duty, as long as it is not alcohol or tobacco?
Or is that only US residents coming back to the US?
I do recall one expensive Ebay nightmare whereby we purchased something from ebay.ca. Had to pay duty on the way here. The item was defective and had to be returned. Duty on the way back. Argh.

If you get caught doing that trick, Canada Customs will confiscate it, and put you on their watch list, if you cannot prove the item was actually purchased in Canada.

I'm so very sad! Three of the stores in the bay area are now closed. San Jose, Santa Clara and San Mateo. Looks like Pleasenton too. I called the CompUSA in San Francisco and they claimed they don't have the N810 listed anywhere in their computer. I wouldn't mind driving an hour up there if they had it. But I'd be pretty disappointed to drive all the way up there for nothing.
I don't suppose anyone else on here lives in San Francisco and has gotten theirs from the CompUSA yet have they?
Any other stores that might have them sitting on the back shelf somewhere?

All of the CompUSA stores in San Diego closed too. There is no place to buy it locally here. The Circuit City web site says that the N810 is not available in stores. Nokia currently has it on backorder. I'm bummed.

I've been calling both stores here in Austin for the last week...*and* going by to ask and look behind the counter (I know, I know) and...nothing till today, when the guy told me that that they have three left in San Antonio and did I want to have mship it here for free?
After I got up I said yes, of course, and managed to ask if I was in time to have it delivered next day...willing to pay of course! So, I just checked the confirmation number and it appears to be legit. If not tomorrow, then Thursday!

Sooo let me get this straight. People actually admit at the border that they bought x,y or z item in the US? Even if such items are not in their boxes or have any identifying tags on them?

I am shocked that we got them first here in S.A., before Austin...usually it's the other way around, it seems...
Glad you were able to take advantage...but why have it shipped? Just hop in your car and hightail it down IH-35, then you could be playing with it tonight! :D :D

And, it is not like you buy it tax-free in the US either. You're paying sales tax in the US (except in two or three states). Just like whenever we go into Canada, we're paying sales tax etc. So everybody should pay double taxes?
We've never had an issue at the US/CAN border, coming into the US or going into Canada. We tell the purpose of our trip, broadly declare what we bought (souvenirs, $ of whatever things here and there) and didn't buy (tobacco & alcohol) and are not bringing into the country (weapons, ...). They ask to open the trunk. May look around briefly in the trunk but that's it. I have yet to have a question about any piece of electronics visible & bagged or any item present in my vehicle.
I suppose it is different going back into Canada as they assume all Canadians are buying things cheaper in the US?
But, if -- under the "guilty until proven otherwise" mode (which does happen a lot nowadays, I've been singled out several times at airports by security) -- I had to carry a receipt on me for every piece of electronics I travel with in the car on vacation or when flying on holiday internationally to prove I didn't buy anything across the border ... I better
a) buy an album for said receipts and leave everything home I no longer have a receipt for
Or
b) stay home

They had a thriving store in Sunnyvale, which they cleverly closed when they created the new store in San Jose which was a combined store with some audio/video outfit. I suppose they thought this would help them compete with some of the local superstores likes Fry's, but mostly they
seem to be imploding in the San Francisco/San Jose area. I bought my N770 from them, and would happily buy an N810 from them, if only they were still a viable source. It's really too bad.

At least you guys have Fry's out there...here we have 1 CompUSA store and a bunch of BB and CC stores...
That is odd that so many tech stores would close out there, though...

Yeah, it is pretty ironic. But I'm certain there is a least a crate of them around here somewhere. I just don't know where. Fry's did have some of the N800's but I don't know if they are carrying the 810 or not. I figured this was the best place to post to find someone who knew where the stash is here in the Valley. Until then I guess I'll just wait and play with OS2008 :)

My closest CompUsa is ... out of state 3 1/2 hours.
Any Floridians out there who by chance know if the N810 is available at CompUSA there? I will be down for a few days and really want a first hand experience before I will consider an order.

Yep, you'd think Austin being the 'high tech' spot, it'd would have been first, but SA is, of course a bigger city. And I'll tell you, man, if I didn't have to work tonite, I'd have made the drive!
I work in a restaurant at nite and can't take off, but oh boy! Tomorrow!:D:D Lotsa installing to do:)

Is there really a zero-dollar limit for goods brought from the US to Canada, for customs? For goods imported through FedEx or UPS, ok, but isn't there a different (and much higher) limit when you physically cross the border yourself and stay over there for a day or more, something like that? That's pretty common for European countries at least.

Better than speculating. Had a moment to look it up:
http://cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/media/facts-faits/060-eng.html
What can I bring back with me?
When you return to Canada, duties and taxes are applicable on all purchases unless you qualify for a personal exemption. Personal exemptions allow you to bring goods of a certain value into the country without paying the regular duties. If you have been outside Canada for:
24 hours or more, you can bring in CAN$50 worth of goods free of duty and tax; If the goods you bring in are worth more than CAN$50 in total, you cannot claim this exemption. Instead you have to pay full applicable duties and taxes on all goods you bring in.
48 hours or more, you can bring in CAN$400 worth of goods free of duty and tax;
7 days or more, you can bring in CAN$750 worth of goods free of duty and tax.
Alcohol and Tobacco - Restrictions apply to the amount of alcohol and tobacco you can bring into Canada under your exemption. If you have been outside Canada for at least 48 hours and are of legal age, you can bring in these amounts of alcohol and tobacco products free of duty and tax as part of your personal exemption:
.../...
What if I'm away for only a few hours?
If you don't qualify for a personal exemption, you can still bring back any amount of goods - except for restricted items - as long as you are willing to pay the duties and any provincial and territorial assessments that may apply.
Keep all your receipts handy
CBSA officers may ask you to show receipts for the goods you've purchased while out of the country. They may also ask to see your hotel receipts to verify the length of your stay outside Canada. Keeping these items all together and readily accessible will help to avoid unnecessary delays.
Make a full declaration
If you are not sure what to declare when you arrive in Canada, declare all items first and then discuss them with the officer.
Time for an extended weekend in the US ;)

I just picked mine up at CompUSA in Orlando. They don't have it in the computers there and it's not on display, but it's in the glass case where they're displaying the N800 models.
