I spotted a new release of the 2008 OS...
OS 2008 version 1.2007.42-19
RX-44_2008SE_1.2007.42-19_PR_COMBINED_MR0_ARM.bin
is at the same usual location http://tablets-dev.nokia.com/nokia_N810.php

Good find. Previous version was
RX-44_2008SE_1.2007.42-18_PR_COMBINED_MR0_ARM.bin
I guess I'll have to try it out, just for the heck of it.

Good find btw :)

Thanks for the feedback. I am hesitating only so as to avoid repeating the reinstall applications process when we are quite close now to the final release.
Unless this is the final release?

Well the new OS 2008 sports an improved backup/restore utility.
It'll now ask you to backup also the list of applications you've installed so far and, when restoring, it'll re-install them all.
It's, actually, a very good opportunity to test this greatly welcome feature!
PS: speaking of applications, the Application Manager now does not loose the position when re-freshing the list of apps after an update/install/removal (in OSes <= 2007 it was always starting from the beginning of the list. Very annoying.)

This was something already in 42-18.

In fact I did not say 42-18 but OS2008.
I did test it in 42-18 as I didn't want to flash twice, but I am going to try it now.

Would be nice if they could provide a changelog in the same dload directory.

You think they're going to provide a changelog for firmware we're not even supposed to have or use?

The Europe N810 support site is now live:

Went live yesterday morning according to the *one* hit on nokia.co.uk for N810:

There you have it! ;)

@zerojay, the firmware page is live off of the official N810 support pages (which have been live since the 14th of November (http://www.internettablettalk.com/forums/showpost.php?p=94949&postcount=9) when I found it linked from the N810 product page), and we know a few people have retail models of the device. Changelogs shouldn't be an issue.

No, it shouldn't be, but I'm just surprised to see something at all.

Not having a memory card yet I backed up my n810 to the internal memory card and then put this upgrade on.
The Backup/Restore application doesn't see my backup, but it shows up in file manager.
Any suggestions?
Other than buy a memory card... already all over that!

php site won't accept my wlan number. erros message says product id is not valid. attempting load, with same number, from europe site brings up only the four available 2007 os versions. any suggestions?
john
Are you sure you are using an N810 wlan number ?

updated and tried the restore. it restored all my repos.
Bad: It didn't enable the maemo extras repo which was when i did the backup, i had to manually install python runtime, it failed on installs where i didn't use application manager to install which was only 2, and the app restore failed a few times for no apparent reason.
Good:I like that i didn't have to add all the repos, it keep the list of apps that needed to be restored until they were all done so i didn't have to go through one by one to install, it did that automagically for me.
It isn't completely 100% yet but much better than the restore experience in os2007.

I've got the first image and did an "apt-get dist-upgrade". Now after rebooting I see "RX44 2007-43 1" on the startup screen.

You're still in r&d mode. Hook it up like you're going to flash it again, and do a "./flasher(which ever version you're using) --disable-rd-mode" Then unhook the nokia and reboot.

I see people talking about using flasher to update their tablets ... is that because they're upgrading from 2007OS? Because I seem to recall that with 2008OS, we weren't going to have to do that anymore?

hi,
just to share my os2008 experience on my n800.
at last monday, i reflashed to os2008 but experienced browser crashes all the time even surfing to maemo.org. it drove me mad. 2 days later, i decided to wait till the final release for os2008 by reflashed it back to os2007

I think that we don't have to reflash after the Democrats take over the White House and the War in Iraq is over and the financial crisis is over and everyone loves the USA.
In other words, in the hypothetical future.
BTW: It was interesting to read in the announcement that came in my inbox today, that "The performance upgrade will be based on early user feedback collected through November."
This sounds to me like Nokia is delighted that some people figured out how to upgrade to 2008 prematurely and they are eagerly watching for tips on how to improve the software.
So the journalist who let the cat out of the bag should get a medal...

I think it's mostly because we're flashing an os that's really not supposed to be flashed to the 800. It's made for the 810, which is why the windows flasher utility won't work. It checks the hardware, sees an 800 and says nope, sorry. Using the linux flasher utility bypasses the hardware check, it also bypasses all the built in fail safes.

Nobody said it was going to be a completely smooth ride getting to OS2008. Especially if you want to be one of the first. If you want stability, wait for a release or two.

Nokia made that statement prior to anyone posting how to run OS2008 on the N800. I believe they were referring to getting feedback from N810 users.
And no journalist let the cat out of the bad, it was folks right here who worked it out, so if anyone deserves a medal it is them. Then the story got picked up by some other sources.

Perhaps, but much of that feedback was provided before the cat got out. ;)
EDIT: :p technut
Oh, and browser crashes? Have not encountered those with recent builds. The bugs have been small, few and mostly encountered in third-party apps for me.

Zerojay, it is not like they have ever gotten around to providing detailed changelogs period even on official firmware releases. Every firmware has always been a bit of a mystery usually with a few lines about "improved" this and that, but nothing that would actually be helpful like "fixed bug # 1234 by implementing patch provided by developer y" or "changed initialization scripts to better support x; interested developers should checkout the updated documentation found here." I think Nokia would be much better at attracting outside developers if they could see how the sausage gets made.
