Yup downloading right now on my N800 with OS2008Beta :D
Well we'll have our N810 discounted hopefully by Christmas, but in the mean time we have the official OS2008 for N800 and Skype.
Lots of news...
UPDATE: ARGH!!! it wants an N810!!! :/

Ma c'č davvero molta differenza tra uno e l'altro? (motivi "legali a parte")
Io ho la versione N810, stasera provo a installare.
Is there really a difference between the two, apart from legal reasons? I have the N810 version (really don't want to reflash another time, until all gets really official), tonight I'll try to install Skype and see if it works

The only visible differences (to me) are:
a) Skype won't install on it
b) It correctly reports the Internet Tablet OS and Version in the About / Informazioni dialog
A part from that.. looks better than the OS2008 from the N810 (sometimes it was.. hanging for a few seconds). Let's see.

Did you restore a backup from OS2007? This may be the cause of your browser problems - if you did restore a backup you should open a bug in Bugzilla and attach the backup so that Nokia can diagnose and fix the problem.

That's the right URL - thanks for filing the bug, as long as it's reproducible it should provide a good clue that will help solve the instability and flashing without restoring should help confirm the backup theory.

Tried topair my Samsung WEP185 and paired correctly. I can not longer connect to my work WLAN (should figure out why, but it's not a matter of OS2008 since it started a couple of weeks ago after our sysadmin did some update on the system.. and I still had OS2007 installed) so I cannot say whether it will work with skype, but users report BT Headset to work with Gizmo. Thank you for the information. This is of great interest to me.
To be clear I can pair my HS850 Motorola BT headset (the headset I have used with many other hardware devices).
I could always pair my N800 to my HS850but not hear any sounds. The pairing is capable of Object Push only ( not audio ). In other words, pairing isn't sufficient to know if it works with Skype.
I'm downloading the RX34_2008SE now, but I don't know if I'm gonna flash just yet. Sadly, the download is taking an eternity. It started flowing 4 hours ago and it is still not done yet. Thanks for the tip. I am doing my part now also. I'm also seeding.
Funny, because I thought about Googling for a torrent of it, but talked myself out of even bothering to look. I just didn't think anyone would be doing it.
When I found it, and started the DL, it took less than 3 minutes with Azureus to get the entire file (after 5 hours from the Nokia site I only had 81% of it).
Thanks for the suggestion. I have it now and I'll continue seeding it for a few days.

I successfully paired my Moto HT820 stereo headsets with my N800/OS08. It works, kinda. I made the change to /etc/bluetooth/a2db.conf (?? I'm at work now, can't remember the file name), rebooted, and was able to use Kagu through my headset, but it was stuttery. It was almost like it would pair, play, unpair, repeat. I was getting the blips I get when I make/receive a cell phone call and the other end answers (or hangs up).
Don't know about Skype. I don't plan on using it at this time...

I've got the same issue, and when I check for updates in app manager, it says there are none.
One thing I noticed is that the App Manager's ability to find updates seems to be tied to what you have installed on your machine already. For example, before I installed anything all that showed was boingo and gizmo. After I manually installed GPE Calendar (and its libraries), I have many more installable apps in App Manager. Strange.
However, Skype is still the 2MB version that requires n810 firmware.

Uh... the App Manager only finds updates for stuff you've already installed because if you haven't already installed it, it's not an update for you. Refresh app manager and install. Worked for me.

On another thread. Evan pointed out that I should use Tools>Refresh Application List instead of the Check for Updates button.
I did get Skype to install despite the "unable to install" error that I received.
Unfortunately, Skype has a ways to go...it drops every call after 5-6 seconds, and though the Bluetooth headset finally does work, the audio quality is TERRIBLE both incoming and outgoing.
Seems pretty shaky even for a beta release!

Good man :)
Looks like there might be a solution posted in the bug already:
if we're right, the problem should be caused by:
$ grep engine ~/.browser
engine=opera
it should say (if it doesn't want to crash)
engine=microb
So a quick check of ~/.browser should confirm if this is the culprit or not (and the bug updated accordingly). :)

I got Skype to install on OS2008beta after several failed attempts. I think the sequence that made it work was...
- in Application Manager, Show installed applications.
- I had a broken Skype install listed, and a broken libuiw
- uninstall the broken Skype (which should also uninstall libuiw)
- then in the App manager menu pick Tools / Refresh application list
- then Browse installable applications and install Skype
Worked for me.

That worked for me too. Except I didn't have a broken skype install listed, just a broken libuiw. Uninstalled that and then refreshed apps, skype went from a 2.1mb file to a 4.5. Downloaded, installed and good to go.
Milhouse, set-engine for my bug however is still a work in progress. My $ grep engine ~/.browser does indeed report engine=opera but the tools I need to change it, either leafpad like I used last time or VI can not be downloaded. Any attempt to contact maemo.org/downloads = browser crash. Downloading from PC to SD card and running internally from the N800 didnt work either.

"vi" is installed by default (or seems to be on OS2008/N810 on N800) but can be a pain to use. If you're not familiar with vi, it might be easier to cut & paste the following commands (no need for root) into xterm:
cp ~/.browser ~/.browser.bak
cat ~/.browser.bak | sed "s/engine=opera/engine=microb/" > ~/.browser
And that's it - restart the browser and hopefully no (or fewer!) crashes. :)

I installed skype on N800 on both the versions of os2008 - The beta for N800 and the N810 os burnt onto N800 method.( if that makes any difference ). Skype allows me to log on and I can chat, I can even use the bluetooth headset, but I can also do without it. Unfortunately, I have the following problems,
1. Every call gets dropped at 25 secs.
2. If a call is completed in less than 25 secs, then skype just dies and I have to start it again. This happens w/ and w/ out BT headset.
To be precise the skype performance is very bad after the upgrade ( or say skype functionality is simply non existent. ). I have not restored any backups or anything like that from os 2007. Is any one else experiencing similar problems ? If its worth it I can start a new thread and also paste my skype output in pastebin and link to that. Any help / insights would be highly appreciated. I would else go back to os2007.

I just tried two Skype-out landline calls, one lasted 25 seconds, the other 35 seconds before they abruptly came to an end. Then I tried a PC to PC voice call and it stayed up (2 minutes) until I hung up. But Skype crashed at the end of all 3 calls. So I think you're onto something.

@Technut: thanks much! I wanted to file a bug report too. But just wanted to see if it was my individual issue / rather a wide spread one.
@realitygaps: thanks much. Now I know I am not alone.
Anyway, the one improvement I see in skype for OS2008 over OS2007 is that it allows one to minimize each chat window individually. But the clicking on history to look at a chat is not very responsive. Do you see anymore ? Or is there a change log I can see somewhere ? I see only Version: 1.7.23.27.4. Release date: July 10, 2007 in skype.com and no change log.
Regarding BT : Does the N800 on OS2008 only support Headset profile and not a2dp ? All I can hear is mono on my Stereo headset :(.
For the time being I am going to run OS2007 so that I can have a non crashing skype. :)
Thanks again.

I have a n800 and the 0s2008. I installed Skype today, using the link with the Sykpe icon. I got a 4 mb download and it installed fine.
The version I have is [10017/1.7.62.48.5] I made a skype to skype call and it had a bad audio quality and lost connection after a few seconds. I tried to make a skype to land / cell line call ( using the 3 mos. free unlimited to USA or Canada voucher card that came in the Nokia N800 box) ... Each time I made a call, I either got a " misc. error " or the program crashed. It did this each time the recipient answered the phone or when the call went to voice mail.
I'm heading to Mexico for Xmas and Newyears and thought this would be a great way to call home .... :(
I hope it's solved by then. If anyone has any suggestions, I'm all ears. :)
Other than this problem, I love this device !!!

Well, you still have options. If you're trying to reach US phones you can check out the Gizmo Project or get an accound with a SIP based VOIP provider.
If you just wan't to do voice to PCs remotely then you can add Gtalk and Jabber to the options.

I hate to ask a question that I'm sure that's been asked before, but if I were to 'down-grade'...at least until the Skype has been tweeked; which os2007 would be the one I should downgrade too? I think I remember seeing two of them. Also, since I didn't play with the tablet with the original firmware installed...(second version I believe).. What would I be 'giving-up' by taking the system back down a notch, or two?
Thanks in advance for your input... And for responding to my original comment so quickly and graciously.

If you were to downgrade, the latest OS2007 is "RX-34_2007SE_4.2007.38-2_PR_COMBINED_MR0_ARM.bin".
You'd be giving up a bit of overall speed, and going to the Opera web browser instead of the MicroB one. It will be very usable, but you'll probably want to upgrade again after Skype is fixed. Unfortunately you lose all your application installs going each way. I suggest making a backup of what you have now, so that you can restore from backup when you return to using OS2008 again.

It's certainly possible, but you would have to find out for sure from Lingo. OS2008 has support built in for SIP based accounts, which most VOIP providers use. The question is really whether they allow it and if they will give you your SIP login info.

I have a rock solid Skype with great quality. I am a rank newbie on the Nokia and haven't hacked it at all; I kept trying to install Skype until it said it was available, then it said it needed an OS upgrade, which I installed, and then I installed Skype. I've made several calls (from Canada) to North America and overseas Skype and telephones for up to half an hour with no problems whatsoever, no dropped calls, no dropouts in either direction.
My only disappointment was no video, I had been reading about Skype having video in beta for Linux and was expecting it. Any intel on when we might get it for the N810?

Yes, rub it in. It seems to work with the N810 and 2008os, but not the N800.
(Is this correct?)
Did Skypeout work with N800/os2007?

Waiting patiently...

I emailed Skype at the same time I posted my message here. I finally received this reply from the company.... Unfortunately, it's not much help. I have downgraded to OS2007 and will wait patiently until there is a fix for the Skpe issue. --- It DOES work on 2007.

I have redeemed my voucher for Unlimited calls in the USA & Canada, but each time I try to use the device to make a call, the receiving phone will ring and when they answer, I get a ((((Misc Error))) message and the call is dropped. I am using the newest version of Skype available. Version [10017/1.762.48.5] Do you have any suggestions?

Any Improvements in skype in OS2008 ( !beta ) :) ? I am in a place that rips me off for download bandwidth. Can some one confirm that skype *works* on the full version of 2008 ? If thats the case, I would go ahead and download it.
Thx

Yes, Skype now works. I have been using it all morning since flashing to
the new release. It would be nice if it used the built in camera, but I'm happy with it not crashing anymore.

Update:
I have flashed my N800 with the new OS and Skype. I have placed two very long calls with Skype-Out already.
Both calls went perfect as could be imagined. The first call was 35 minutes long. No issues whatsoever. The second call was longer and also worked mint.
Skype with this Official OS release today seems to be flawless.

EDIT: The second Skype call went 47 minutes (when I ended the call) with zero problems....no chopiness, no disconnects, no anomalies. Perfect ! Now onto testing the bluetooth headset with Skype. Keeping my fingers crossed.
EDIT: paired this OS2008 - N800 with my Motorola (mono) Bluetooth headset ( HS850 ) and opened the N800 browser, steered to www.sky.fm and started streaming music to the bluetooth headset. It worked! Sound quality was fine ( for the HS850 which isn't High Fidelity ). Smooth, clean music (in one hear), nice.... Now to test it all with Skype.

Linux beta with webcam is already out, so maemo version shouldn't be far behind.
