I get this error when I try to connect to my WiFi access point, when it worked fine with previous operating systems and works again if I downgrade. It also works with the router in my other house. I have tried disabling WPA, using static DHCP, changing the SSID etc but nothing works. It happens with both the official N800 beta and the N810 image on the N800. My router is a ZyXEL Prestige 660HW-61 (Telefonica branded).
I've written more about this and other bugs here (http://james.nerdiphythesoul.com/drupal/os2008)

I am having the same error message since I flashed to OS2008. Have you had any luck fixing the problem? If so, what can I do to my N800?

Did you try rebooting the router? Sometimes works.

Hi, I got the same error.
Where can I set the ip adress manually?

It would really help if people posted details of their routers (make/model/firmware version/config) when posting their "me too's". :)

The above bug report was closed - could you please check and reopen it?
I've seen the same error message several times today when trying to connect to some random open access points.

I'm in the same boat. Netgear Router WGT624. Tried multiple security setting and hardcoded IP address. Still Network Connection error.
Is there a utility out there that can help us diagnose exactly what is the problem?

I originally had the same problem right after I upgraded to OS2008... I simply delete the connection after "restore" and try to detect the new wifi connection and it works... so basically just recreate it... i am not sure why but that's what i ended up doing.
Thanks.

Those of you with this problem - can you confirm if the solution proposed by vngueyn972 fixes the problem? If it does not I'll reopen the bug on your behalf.

Did not work for me. I have deleted/recreated the connection several times in my troubleshooting effort.

UPDATE: I'm now able to hold a connection to my Router and N800. Seems I have to reboot the router cause it holds onto the IP of the original connection. Any who, to try to work around this problem I set up the connection with a hardcoded IP address. The device shows connected in my router and the connection is active in the N800. However, I cannot hit any site in the browser ("Unable to Connect To Server" ) error. I cannot even Ping the N800 from my PC even though my router and N800 says its connected. I have no problem pinging other wireless devices on my network.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. This is one Xmas gift turning out to be a bust :-(

I'm getting the error at home, Netgear WGR614 (I think) and N810. Sometimes rebooting the router and the IT works. Sometimes it hooks up automatically.
It had been working better, but I deleted all the default connections to reestablish and now it seems flakier. However before I had turned off the PSM. I've just turned it off again and will try a little later to see if this helps.
At work and relative's houses (with other brand routers) it works well.

I get a similar error AFTER upgrading from OS2007.
My N800 is often unable to recognize my WLAN (D-Link DWL-G700AP). Sometimes it recognize the WLAN but I get a generic "Error during connecting". If I tap "Retry" it seems like the WLAN is not available any more.
Once on 5 times I'm able to connect, but connection hangs after a few minutes...
I get the same error with other AP too...

When I encountered this bug, I had success with the following method :
1) Completely reset wireless router (Linksys WRT54G), essentially killing the current WLAN. *Note: This is different from rebooting the router. Rebooting did NOT work in my case.*
2) Access router through router's IP address and reconstruct network from scratch (actually a fairly quick process).
3) Reconfigure network settings on each computer (also pretty quick), reflecting changes to new WLAN.
4) Check settings on N800 to be certain that the weps, etc. are current.
In short, I scrapped my network and started from scratch. I'm not sure why, but it worked like a charm. :)
Best of luck~

I played around with this a bit more. It seems the N800 is temperamental with WIFI. I was able to change the mhz channels the Router broadcasts on and by doing this I was able to get and hold a connection in the Connection Manager. However, I still cannot get a site to load in the browser.
I'm calling Nokia today to send this guy back. I believe I have a lemon. So many other people don't have this problem. I have tried with 3 different routers and cannot browse a site. Re flashed, rebooting, deleted and added connections, yada yada . Nothing works.....

I'm wondering if this problem has something to do with the method for obtaining an IP address. My WiFi network at home is set up for DHCP and I have no problem there.
I've been able to connect to two WiFi "hotspots" so far--one hair salon and my company's guest AP.
Every other unsecured network I've tried to connect to has given me the error message mentioned above about not being able to obtain an IP address.
What the Connection applet needs is a convenient check box to allow you to pick an IP address if DHCP is not available.

I have the same problem, with a mac-mini internet sharing connection. All the resto of the devies (macbook pro, iphone) where able to get an IP address of the mac mini. I tried disabling the WEP encryption to no avail.
Before we had a Netgear 314 router that was working fine. I just created the connection with an IP address and the mac-mini info and it works, but it's annoying.

Mac OS X as the DHCP server seems to be a problem for OS 2007/8 (bug #2478 (https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2478)).
Everyone else - do you have QoS enabled in the router/access point? This has caused problems in the past (http://www.internettablettalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=8973) with Belkin wireless routers.

Another thought on this matter, while logging into my Wireless router to check connections I noticed that the N800 connection shows "(null)" as the Client Host Name.
Could this be a reason why some WiFi access points are not letting us connect?
When I did the initial setup on my N800 it asked for a device name, but evidently this device name is not getting sent along to the Access Point as the Client Host Name.
hostname inn xterm reports:
Nokia-N800-50-2
Does this string cause problems on some routers?
This is a theory and you can take it for what its worth
I have two wireless routers - Linksys WRT54G w/hyper wrt and Netgear WGT624v3
Have N810 for a week tomorrow - always connects to linksys but netgear was iffy - got the (unable to retrieve ip) error a lot lately. Just updated firmware on netgear and problem went away - at least for now.
So the question is - Has this occurred on other than netgear? seems like a lot of reports of netgear problems. Just a thought.

This started happening to me last night on my home router, although it had been trouble-free for a week.
After turning the N810 off and on, it connected fine again.

Hi guys! I'm newbie, it's 3rd day as I got my N800(with 2008 OS).
At home I have router Tp-Link and it works good but in the office, where are about 10 networks I get 'Unable to retrieve IP' with each one.
Help, please.

Help, please.
1. Are these "open" (unencrypted) links?
2. If they are, do you have a key (WEP/WPA/WPA2)?
3. Perhaps the networks you see are using MAC-based authentication (i.e., if it doesn't know your MAC address, it won't let you through.)
4. Maybe they aren't really Access Points? (Unlikely that all 10 are ad hoc, but...)
There are definite steps you can take to troubleshoot this problem. It is non-trivial for us to help, since we aren't there to see what is going on. The points above should give you a push in the right direction, though.

sorry im just newbie and got the N800..i flash both OS2008 n ipv6 kernel that i get from Anemone IPv6 Website...when i do cat /proc/net/if_inet6 i can see link local address fe80:XX:XX:XX when i connected to ipv4 only network...which means my N800 already ipv6 enabled..but when i try connect to IPv6 only network, there is Internet Connection Failed. Unable to retrieve IP address. My question is it problem with the software configuration?? because when i attempt to connect to IPv6 network and do cat /proc/net/if_inet6 , i can see 24XX:XX:XX:XX:XX which mean i can get the global IPv6 address..somebody could point me to solution..thanks in advance ya..

Oof. I'm having this problem now, and it's disturbing to see that there doesn't seem to be a general solution.
I upgraded to OS2008. The problem didn't start immediately; wi-fi seemed to work as well as ever for weeks. (I am not connecting to a home router. I'm just connecting to free wi-fi connections.)
A couple weeks ago, though, I began getting the "internet connection failed" message with increasing frequency, using connections that had worked perfectly well before, including connections I could pick up from home. Today it stopped being able to connect to my office wi-fi, which permeates our building, and shows up as a full bar of signal strength on my n800.
These are unencrypted wi-fi connections. They all worked for me before. Now I get a connection very infrequently, if at all. I am at a loss.
Thank you!

Looks like this problem remains unfixed. My issues started when I removed WPA from my Netgear WPN824v3 and made it open. As suugested by some, if you specify IP, Subnet, Gateway and DNS manually, you are able to connect .. but what if you don't have that data? Interestingly enough, I can connect to an open network that uses a Linksys router so maybe this is more of a problem with Netgear equipment. Very frustrating.

Sorry to revive an old thread but has anyone figured out a solution to this problem?
I'm running the latest version of Diablo on my Nokia n810 and right from the first time i unboxed it I get the "cannot retrieve ip address" error when trying to connect to my Linksys WRT54GS v6 router using dhcp. The only way I can get it to connect is through assigning a manual ip which I wouldn't mind so much if the problem was isolated to just this router but often when i try to connect to free open hotspots I get this error and it is difficult to use a manual ip workaround when you don't know any information about these networks. :(
Thanks guys

I'ved lived with this phenomenon for a year and a half now. It comes up often while trying to connect to random routers, and occasionally in hotels. I see it more with a weak signal.
Twice earlier this year I had the problem with a strong signal in a hotel. In the first case they were able to give me a static IP address which worked.
The second place was more interesting. It was a small hotel in Venice. Even sitting next to the router I got this message. The hotel reported that some guests were unable to connect to their router, while others did fine. Their public computer is a laptop, and it was not connecting either. Finally I reset the router. After that my N810 and their laptop both worked fine.
This bug has been marked closed (https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2464), by the way.

I've tried restoring factory defaults on both my router an my n810 multiple times but I've never got it to work with my router using DHCP. So either my router or the n810 is not following dhcp standards.

I have n800 + DIABLO_5.2008.43-7. Same problem has been observed with Asus wl500g router. This is neither router problem, nor dhcp-related (with static ip no ping request successed).
I've tried most of available WiFi configurations. Results:
It looks like we have issues with AES: $subj problem occurs when I trying to associate with WPA-PSK+AES or WPA2-PSK/AES wireless protections. dmesg in n800 says that all associated OK with my AP, but all IP-packets, including ICMP ECHO and DHCP, broadcast gone lost.
All working ok on network with...:
Open System (no protection)
WEP Encryption with shared key (insecure for ages)
WPA-PSK + TKIP (Insecure (http://jwis2009.nsysu.edu.tw/location/paper/A%20Practical%20Message%20Falsification%20Attack%2 0on%20WPA.pdf))
WPA2-PSK + TKIP
I've not tested any "enterprise" protections like WPA2-Enterprise with certificates, RADIUS and etc.
I think, that bug located in AES encryptor on n800 side. Thanks.

I have n800 + DIABLO_5.2008.43-7. Same problem has been observed with Asus wl500g router.
I have an N800 and an N810, both running that same firmware. I also have a Asus WL-520gU and a Buffalo WHR-HP-G54, both running DD-WRT and distributing IP addresses via DHCP.
It looks like we have issues with AES: $subj problem occurs when I trying to associate with WPA-PSK+AES or WPA2-PSK/AES wireless protections.
My wireless network uses WPA2-PSK/AES, and my tablets connect without any problems.
