Thanks. I'm now missing python2.5-dispatcher and python2.5-efl-utils and the server has been updated.
edit: Alright! I got the dispatcher, so all that I'm missing is python2.5-efl-utils and then we can have a complete mirror =).
Email on the way with efl-utils! (Careful the one on your website now is incorrect - length 199)

I am writing up some manual instructions. GreySim (on #canola) says that he's going to do an install file.
You know what? Phuck it. Canola2 isn't worth the hassle.
Here's some "feedback" for you: not worth the damn hassle!
That is the most logical response I have seen to Nokia's "server crisis". I agree with iball!

It's easiest if you've already set up ssh on your tablet and you connect to it like this: ssh ip.of.tablet -l root
And now:
[22:01] <wolf08> sudo gainroot
[22:01] <wolf08> cd /
[22:02] <wolf08> mkdir canola2
[22:02] <wolf08> cd canola2
[22:02] <wolf08> tar xvzf /downloaded/file.tgz
[22:02] <wolf08> dpkg -i ./*
Edit: here is the becomeroot deb for those who don't have RD mode enabled:
http://eko.one.pl/maemo/dists/bora/user/binary-armel/becomeroot_0.1-2_armel.deb
qos from #maemo is making me a few files to turn my web directory into a temporary repository. Stand by!

I tried the repo download thrice (came home late and panting for Canola and what a dissapointment with the Nokia servers mess...
Anyway thans to the alternate site on and this one tgz file.
Followed the exact same steps as detailed as above - and BINGO !
Got Canola downloaded, installed and working in 5 mins flat
(I already had the becomeroot, so...)
Thanks and kudos to you for setting up this alternate site and for the instructions. This is a community.
And shame on Nokia (I wont blame the Canola guys here) for putting up such shitty servers.

HINT: you shoould try playing with your settings!
1./ Settings --> Media Library --> Audio/Photos/Video
2./ click on any of them
3./ and then click on the "crossed eye" next to the name to make it a "normal eye" and the press OK
you should now be able to see the files from the "normal eye"-ed
folder.
Hope this helps :)

I realize that the whole bandwidth thing is frustrating, but really is it their fault that Nokia doesn't deem us tablet users important enough to devote more bandwidth to?
(Off topic: I still think it's ridiculous that there's so many DIFFERENT repositories. We need one repository with EVERY file in it, mirrored across multiple servers, does anyone know why this is the only Linux that doesn't do that?)
The program is worth the issues with downloading though, as far as I'm concerned. It's definitely the best media player I've used so far. I hope that in the future, in addition to adding the tagged album art and wma support, that a FM radio plugin is developed, that'd only improve the software.

Great piece of software - this Canola. Hats off to the Canola developers. Very well thought out UI - so far from my initial looks.
Pretty late so will hit the sack today, hoping to play some more tomorrow.
In a jist
Eye watch folder is where it looks for media - by Audio, Video and Pics
Dragging on the Video seems to make it full screen, how do I make it small again ?
Pics pan and dipslay very well.
How do I force a rescan of media, other than shutting down the eye and shutting it on again on all folders to be watched ?
(Kagu had a nice force-scan option, a similar option would be good on C2).
Will test out my OGG files tomorrow.
And lastly thanks goes to Wolf08 for this nice gift of a alternate download site and a package as well.
Well, let tall the hate subside (against those who had been able to downloads from Nokia repos) and let there be love and joy again for those who had to wait for a decent alternative. :-)

I realize that the whole bandwidth thing is frustrating, but really is it their fault that Nokia doesn't deem us tablet users important enough to devote more bandwidth to?
Yes, it is there fault entirely since Nokia is who they chose to work with in distributing this application. Remember when there was a separate repository for Canola that wasn't broken all the time?
I must be the only one that remembers that.
Everyone forget that Nokia is in Finland? You know, the same Finland that's touted as being the most connected country on the planet with some of the fastest internet speeds?
No excuse whatsoever for this utter failure. Nokia - and the Canola devs - just need to man up and admit they phucked up the distribution.
Or does everyone want to be like President Bush now and blame other things?

I'm not sure if you are kidding, didnt understand my question, or are just being rude/insulting, but I know what UPNP is. I've got 2 UPNP servers in my house. One with MP3's music and another with my podcasts. All of these show up under the built in Media Player. It appears that Canola2 has no way to specify a network share or a UPNP server as a source of files. I expected it to download the file listing from the UPNP server, cache it, and make it available in the player.

Why is there no one centralized repository? Because the closest thing to an official one that exists that I'm aware of is maemo.org's, and look how that turned out.
I hope that someone can create a good universal repository, or that maemo.org can actually get it's network problems fixed, but as of now there's nothing. And yeah, I understand the pain with it all; I counted my repositories earlier today and I've got 21! That's not right.

You know what? Phuck it. Canola2 isn't worth the hassle.
Anyone who gets this uptight over a media player ought to take a holiday.
Look - it was clear that Nokia's handling (their fault or Akamai - doesn't matter) of the OS2008 release was a screwup. That was fair warning that installing ANY application - Canola just being one of many - which relied upon that infrastructure was going to be a hassle.
There is nothing wrong with a development group focusing on what they do - development - while entrusting distribution (or packaging or printing or ...) to others.
Not to mention that this is a *beta* release...
Time to "man up" and start being polite, folks.

I did this with Canola 1 and NFS, so I imagine it should also work with Samba. If I had Canola 2 I'd test it, but I don't yet, so can't.

I'm fairly new to the N800 (3 weeks) too. I was not successful at getting samba working at all with OS2008. Browsing a share either causes hangs, or when I tried to install a cifs kernel driver to OS2008 beta, I would never get the filesystem to even mount.
I agree that it should just work...that was my expectation. I am very disappointed in the product so far. Very few things 'just work' well.

Ok, I wasn't sure but I tried to assume a miscommunication was most likely. I didnt report a bug because I have a feeling they didnt include this. There was a post a few weeks back about UPNP not working quite like they wanted...I wonder if that turned into leaving the feature out. Of course they should say that on their webpage.

On your Tablet, go to Settings - Application Manager. Now up at the tippy-top click where it says "Application Manager" and you should get a drop down list. Go to tools - Application Catalog. Create a new one, and fill in the information given a few pages back.
When you finish, click "Close" and it should ask if you want to refresh. Click yes, and then go into "Installable Applications" and wa-la!

Quoted and added bold font for emphasis. There's absolutely no reason this shouldn't be possible when every other linux does it this way. If there's many mirrors of it, then there shouldn't be bandwidth issues, and you'd be able to get all packages from all mirrors.

Situation about UPnP in beta 2: it doesn't support UPnP.
As said before, we have UPnP support done, but it's not up to the level we want, so we did leave it out so we can focus on core and get less noise on bug reports.
That said, we also want to ship UPnP as an extra plugin, one that would be Free Software (as in speech) so all other hackers out there can create new data acquisition modules, like DAAP, MPD, Last.fm, Samba, ... you name it!
So don't focus on this problem too much, it will be released probably in January together with our next bugfix.
Also about plugins: we plan to add, document and publish examples on how to add pre/post play/view hooks, so you'll be able to send played songs to audioscrobbler/last.fm, send viewed pictures to some UPnP media render/TV, ...
Last but not least about plugins: if you plan to write one, like Samba or MPD, remeber that Canola is written in Python, so you'll need python bindings for those! Go find (or write) one before so when we release the docs you just have to adapt few lines ;-)
Finally i was able to install Canola.. from the alternative repository, thanks Wolf08!

We use "xv" output, while gmplayer uses "Nokia_770" which writes directly to framebuffer. We need "xv" to do windowed mode, and it's impossible to change video output during runtime. But fullscreen performance shouldn't be that bad, have you tried fullscreen playback? We hope maemo X11 maintainer apply some patches from Mplayer guy so we can get some improvements.

Test video was random Conan O'Brien episode (XviD, 1021 kbps, 624x352, maybe "max quality" that N800 can handle) which plays fine on Mplayer, but the video doesn't play so smoothly on Canola. It is little bit "jerky". I tested the video in fullscreen and windowed mode.

Looks and feels great - wtg & thanks to the Canola team!!!
And thank you to wolf08 & community for setting up the repository :)
Bullsh1t! Folks have been able to take the firmwares and rehost them VERY EASILY on other servers with more bandwidth.
Wow, if no one can install your goddamn application then don't expect much feedback other than "it won't download".
While you might have decent programming skills, your network engineering skills need a serious amount of work.
iball, your are being a jerk -- even more so than usual. These are the people who've brought innovative, useful, third-party but professional-grade software to the tablets since the early days of the 770. I know for a fact that Marcelo, the team leader, makes them work their asses off. Gustavo is taking a much-needed and well-earned vacation, and is still spending time here trying to explain things and help.
And here you are bombasting them all for things that aren't their fault and they can't do anything about, like the self-righteous arsehole you are. Oh, and did I mention you were being a jerk ?
Thank You Very Much, Wolf08!
«You're a real man, man!» :)

Follow the directions (basically) for the 'trivial repository' on a Debiain system here:
http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/repository-howto/repository-howto
Or, someone can make the complete repository, and create the tarball, and everyone else can just put it where it needs to go on their system. Like I said in a previous post, we, the user community, can easily create a repository ourselves. We just need access to the raw files, and someone has to create the initial repo. Then everyone just rsyncs/copies everything across to their systems. I can setup the roundrobin DNS if we pick a domain name. I have 3 separate 6Mb llines that I can throw at the problem (one is into Level3, the other are into the Verizon cloud for backup links).

Well, goodmorning folks. I'm glad to see that my temporary repo is still up and that it helped people. Last night you guys claimed between 1.5 and 2GB of bandwidth, and clocking each download at 10MB, that's between 150-200 people that found this thread. Not bad at all!
I'm going to leave this up for the next couple of days until the normal servers settle down.
@tps: I would love to help with a roundrobin repo. Maybe we can ask the guys behind jablet.org to get a subdomain like repository.jablet.org for our use?
I must be living right.
I started a C2 download at 9:00 yesterday morning (EST), had to restart it once but it was installed by 9:30. Ten minutes later I was playing Billy Talent or (note or, not and!) viewing photos straight from the SD card from my camera.
I showed it to some folks at my wife's company after I had demo'd the the tablet running their very intensive Javascript and Flash-based e-learning application. (This app never worked on a 770 with Opera or MicroB, or on OS2007 MicroB so OS2008 MicroB is a big improvement). The VP looked at the N800 ruefully and asked what he was going to do with his iPod. How much? $200 from Dell. What, really?
I think I could have sold a bag load of them right there and then.
Nokia/INdT needs to get Canola finished as soon as possible, solve the repo problem and start mass-
marketing this sucker. They are so close!
Anyway, my gut reactions to C2 were:
- Wow, then
- Can C2 be an alternate platform to Hildon? I want to be able to get at the main consumer-oriented stuff from this interface: web, email, voip...
- Cover art. I know it is just top show stuff but Apple has shown that top show is important to the mass market. At least show any pics I put in a music folder. When I am playing music then create a default slide-show of any pics in the same folder as the music playing.
- I want to be able to run a slide-show from my photos at the same time as playing my music.
- Equalizer please.
- Auto-leveling for sound please.
INdT: Muito obrigado

WOW canola2 is awesome! had to download it at 5:30 in the morning with all the server traffic, but i had to get up anyway. i'm super impressed, it actually works just like the video. the buttons in the "locate media" menus are on the teeny side, took a while to figure out they were buttons at all, but you only have to press them once, so no biggy.

Canola Episode II "Serious Arse Kicking"!
So do these guys have anything to do with Nokia? It obviously took a serious dev effort, who finances this.
As one poster suggested, I want to run everything from this UI.

For covers you have to use a 3rd party python script located at http://staff.get-e.org/?p=users/chenca/canola-tuning.git;a=summary just download .py files to your device and run like "python SCRIPT.py", one is to download covers from amazon or last.fm and the other is to thumbnail your videos using MPlayer. I already said this before in this huge thread, but the summary is that we're unable to officially get covers from sites and we didn't have any support to use "cover.jpg" (or similar) from folders, so you have to wait for a more final solution :-/
As for view pictures while listening to music, it's possible! Just click "back" from music player and it should keep playing in the background, you can also click 'n' hold "back" to "go home", this have the nice effect to bring you directly to "now playing" screen when you enter local music again! Ah, and notice that you will have a nice "Play" icon on the top-right, you can tap there from any screen to go straight to "now playing" screen.
Now to the bad news: equalizer and volume normalizer is more difficult to have, since we use external tools to play your media, we'll try, but it might take more releases to get done.

So late last night 10:45 pm, I was able to get conalo2 installed after trying all day. And well, after a full day trying....I was so disappointed.
I hate Canola2 and want canola(1) back. There's few things I don't like, like the green color, but my biggest problem with it , which is the deal breaker, is scrolling. Yea, I know it's cool to use your finger to scroll, but after about 10 minutes time the novelty of wears off, and your felt with nonfunctional scrolling.
This is how the problem works. I'm playing a song and I hit the back button to look through the list to see what's the next song I want to play is. So, I'm at my list and I running my finger down the screen to scroll and instead of the N800 picking up finger moving as a scroll it thinks I made a click. Now some random song I didn't to hear is playing. Every time I try scrolling somewhere along my list of music it picks up a click instead of a scroll. I hate hate hate this. Why would anybody put the scrolling over the same area you have to click on to play?
I think Canola(1) was a much more thought out. It had the scrolling on the side and click to play was in the glass bubble looking thing. No confusion. There was no way for scrolling to get pick up as a click to play. I so hate this. I can not smoothly scroll through my music.
What good is the scrolling if I can't scroll to the song I want play?
Can someone tell me how to install canola(1) back onto the os2008?

First off let me say that this app is AMAZING! It was well worth the wait :D
Ok... I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong, I've searched and searched but nothing. Is there any documentation of Canola2?
Anyways, why won't Canola2 bring up my photos? I've used the menu to tell it to search my external card and when I go into my photos it does show the proper folders where I store them, but tapping on a folder just gives me a blank (green) screen? No error message or message stating that it's doing anything at all. Canola recognizes audio and video just fine. All of my photos are .jpg should they be in some other format?
What am I missing? Thanks :D

Same thing happened to me. Try this if it will work:
1. quit canola.
2. turn off tablet
3. turn on tablet
4. turn off wifi (if connected)
5. run canola.
6. go to settings and re activate the folders where your photos are
7. check if it works.

It's nice... but...
(and before anyone says it, yes, I know it's a beta, and yes, I went to the garage page and added this to the tracker ;) )
I had to go back to gpodder for my podcasts for now.
The way Canola2 works with podcasts, you have to go to every show individually to see if there are new episodes. I usually check for new episodes right when I get up in the morning before I head out to work, and this would take WAY too long to do with the number of podcasts I listen to.
With gpodder, I just hit one button that says "Download new episodes" and all of them queue up and start downloading.
With Canola2 I have to go to every podcast's page and let it refresh the episode list and then click on the episode I want to download.
I'm still not sure if it keeps downloading in the background if I go to another show's list and try to download another one while the previous one is doing it's thing. It also had a download failure while getting a new episode this morning, whereas I went to gpodder and it downloaded right away with no issues.
Also, in my opinion, I don't think that it should automatically check the podcast feed every time I view the list of new episodes, it gets annoying to see it working at the bottom when all you want to do is play the show (It was pointed out to me that you don't have to wait for the refresh to just play a show). I know when most of the shows I listen to come out, and I don't need it to check every time for me.
I also think there should be a "Latest Episodes" page like VideoCenter had (which made for a great podcast client), where you can hit refresh and see all the latest shows and you could either click "Download all new shows" or individually click on the one's you want to download.
Just my 2 cents...
Canola2 is really nice, it's just not there yet as far as podcasts go.

We could ask the jablet folks to delegate the subdomain to us, but maybe we can do something ourselves without relying on *another* party to provide resources as a favor. I have no problem registering a domain, it's less than $10/yr, and we just use that.
Actually, I just registered tabletrepo.com. We can start using that. If anyone has spare bandwidth, diskspace, and desire to help out, email me at tps at buoy dot com with the subject 'REPO'. Wolf, if you can tar up the whole dir, I'll grab it from you for distribution. Also, when you email me, let me know what continent you are on. We'll set up wide area repos so we're not crossing the oceans when there's something closer to home...

We have it, but after some closed testing with some 770 users we decided to drop it for now due 2 main reasons:
gregale (os2006): no pyinotify support, so no media detection, this is a blocker we're trying to solve going back to GnomeVFS, but no luck yet
bora (os2007, Hacker Edition): our bora packages are compiled with -mcpu=arm1136jf-s in order to benefit from GCC optimizations, this will genreate, among other things, float pointing instructions, which are unsupported on 770. Since there is no way to distinguish regular n800-bora from 770-bora/HE we need to setup yet another repository and point users to go there, also we have to recompile all the packages (and we have a lot)
As you can see it's more a deadline related thing than a technical issue, we plan to do that, but now all Canola developers are on vacation to visit our families (most live far from partents), so you'll not have anything until January, sorry.
If there is some brave hacker there, here goes a hint (note this is unsupported, you have not heard this from me, ok? ;-)): most gregale packages (EFL, Python-EFL, ...) should work on 770-Hacker Edition, the problem is with our topmost packages, that are pure-python (canolad, atabake, canola2), so if you install gregale packages on bora and then overwrite canolad, atabake and canola2 with bora versions, you might get it working. Again, this is unsupported, don't sue us if you brick your device somehow :-P

I downloaded canola 2 beta onto my N800 with the official OS2008
The main problems I have so far are:
1. No album art. It won't read from the .mp3 files or from a .jpg in the folder, does anyone know a work-around?
2. It only loads once. If I start canola 2 and then close it, I have to restart the N800 to load it again.

If Canola doesn't take your url the first time. click on the url field again and on the finger keyboard, hit enter.

A few posts up from here is a post explaining the current lack of 770 support. I've been trudging along with the mixing of Gregale packages with Bora packages, but there's one package missing ATM that makes it impossible to proceed (python2.5-edbus). And that one has to be a Gregale package (or recompiled by someone who isn't me).

Indeed it is, for me! Thank you Wolf! I haven't even played with the app yet because I want to thank you first. It worked first time and installed in about one minute. I spent all day yesterday getting a 'download failed' message, so the speed with which the app installed was a pure delight.
I have no idea how you were able to do this and the canola/maemo folks weren't. Though it's irrelevant to me now, perhaps they could benefit from your expertise!

then login to your device and as REGULAR USER (su - user) do:
python albumcover.py --help # info on how to get album covers
python videothumb.py --help # info on how to thumb your videos using MPlayer
Note that since these scripts have no #!/usr/bin/python line at the beginning they have to be called using "python" explicitly.

Sadly, it must just be me. I've found that ALL my applications lose that button functionality if Canola2 is running (doesn't have to be actually doing anything) and regain it as soon as I close Canola2. That would be far too big a bug not to be noticed. But how to fix it in my case?
I know that not all my repositories are working properly yet - every time I refresh my apps I get a different failed catalog. Maybe in another week or two I'll be able to reflash and reinstall everything successfully. Me thinks subjecting your customers to this kind of hassle and delay is a strange way to run a business Nokia.

It should scan just when media is inserted. When Canola starts it triggers a consistency check, that basically does bunch of "stat(2)" calls to check if mtime (modification time) is the same, it can also delete (actually mark as deleted) files that went away and undelete (unmark) files that reappeared. It also adds new files.
As for smbfs, it should work, I don't see why not, we just use regular readdir(2) calls to walk directories.
About components with source code, we provide source of lightmediascanner (http://lms.garage.maemo.org/) and canolad, that uses this library and monitors media changes.

OK, I'm confused now. Is that bora repository required even if I'm running Chinook on my N800 (which I am)? And what packages do I need from that repository? I have ogg-support 0.4 installed. And I've also installed http://kenneth.christiansen.googlepages.com/ogg-support-lms_0.3_armel.deb.
I've also got mplayer installed, which is working fine for playing OGG files, and I've tried updating ~/.atabake/config as described elsewhere in this thread.
But no OGG support for me in Canola :( Canola won't even list my .ogg files, let alone play them. So what am I doing wrong?
EDIT: Sorry, I'm an idiot :o I still had ogg-support-lms v0.1 installed and that didn't work. Installing ogg-support-lms v0.3 (and the one dependency libvorbis0a from TK's repo) has fixed the problem: I can now see all my OGG content :D

We never saw such behavior while downloading podcasts, please provide more information.
As for where to store them, you can choose by using command line:
cnl-set-prefs settings podcast_download_dir '"/path/to/existing/dir"'
Notice that you need both single and double quotes!
Thank you...
With regard to the downloads: what information do you need?
With regard to download directory: sorry, I am a total noob.... ...but I can't figure out what path to put. I want these downloads to go to the internal memory card/C2podcasts, however I don't know what the complete path would be for this.
Cheers!

thanks man.. yea, trying to find that folder.. hmm doesnt seem to come up when I search through filemanager....
The builtin file manager won't let you see that directory - heck it barely lets you see any directory
Check out emelFM2 (http://www.internettablettalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=13160) it's been ported to Maemo and works great :D I've been using it for a few days now & love it!

So does anybody know how to get canola"1" working on the N800 with OS2008?

Someone has. Check wolf08's postings starting from a few pages back (26th page I think).
BTW, another thanks to wolf08 for the help! I managed to get Canola2 up and running using the instructions you gave last night. It looks great!
Cheers to having such a great user community!
What he said :D
Muchas gracias Wolf08, and shame on you Nokia or whoever is responsible for this mess.

To avoid too much repetition, thanks Wolf, thanks Canola team. Nokia, we paid plenty for these tablets. Unacceptable.. yeah.
To some real feedback: It's great in every way I knew it would be from watching the videos.
Something I noticed instantly - an mp3 without an artist or album title no longer seems to appear as unknown as it did in the previous version of Canola, Kagu and the default player. The only way I can get to these is the All Songs view.
Can we get this back? A number of Podcast producers don't fill these fields in, perhaps not because they're lazy, but because they don't feel either technically apply to the content. I'd like to use C2 whilst driving.. Browsing All Songs is inviting disaster in that scenario. Picking them out of [Unknown] was absolutely fine. Of course I could be missing something obvious?
Great product guys.
Cheers,
Tom.

Here's a bug for fans of the hardware button as pause/resume:
If you start a music track, browse to any point in the track using the transport bar, then pause it (either hardware button or screen button) then attempt to resume it with the hardware button, the track always returns to the beginning. Just me?

Where is the queuing?
I select a song to play. I expected to hold my finger/stylus down on another item and 'add' it to the playlist/queue. This way I can queue up several songs. I cant figure out how to do such a basic thing.
I'm not sure I'm a fan of this 'inertial scrolling' gimic either. I'm in the middle of a song and all of sudden some other item is selected. This would not be as bad if I could select 'Add to queue' as the default so the erroneous click simply appends a file to the current playlist, but instead it replaces whatever im in the middle of listening to with some random click.
2. It only loads once. If I start canola 2 and then close it, I have to restart the N800 to load it again.
I have seen this once. At other times it has been OK. Maybe it depends on what you were doing before, or at the same time.

Anyone else having problems downloading pod casts?
Whenever I click on a podcast to download it, I typically get the following error message: "Error during downloading".
I had that problem this morning. I just switched back to gpodder because I had to leave for work soon.

Nice feature that we already thought about, but it's not implemented yet, probably in future versions. :-)

yes, you're the second to say that. Actually, first canola should have kinetic scrolling, but we disabled since 770 screen was not helpful... now with better screens like n810 and all the hype about it, we bring it back... maybe not that good? maybe make it optional? Let's see more reports.
PS: I'm using an iPhone for some days and I also find this same problem with it, it's actually a bit worse, since the screen is so sensitive that sometimes just a light touch on the screen on mistake can make phone calls... :-/

I had that problem this morning. I just switched back to gpodder because I had to leave for work soon.
From my quick time messing with it. It appeared to me that when you select a podcast for download, you must sit there patiently until it completes. Personally, I hit the back button thinking it would be downloading in the background. But when I returned, there was no indication that the file had been downloaded. When I pressed it again, I got 'error downloading' message. It is as if there is an existing/partial file somewhere that causes the attempt to download to fail.

We are working on this for the final release =) after all is a beta.. we have some nice ideas on this.
I have answered this in your email (you send to the site)
So keep looking forward for the improvements on the scrolling we are going to really improve, we are experimenting with the variables for it.. to avoid wrong touches, but it's hard to get it right for all the devices and theres also the area where there's no kinetic (the side of the screen) use it for fast scroll (but cpu doesnt let us scroll a lot)

Nice feature that we already thought about, but it's not implemented yet, probably in future versions. :-)
Probably? I admit I am new to this tablet technology, but shouldn't this be a basic requirement of any media player? Especially one like canola which allows browsing of a large music tree.
How is this player very useful (besides the pretty eye candy) without the ability to select a multiple songs? Do people just hit 'Play random' and thats it?
yes, you're the second to say that. Actually, first canola should have kinetic scrolling, but we disabled since 770 screen was not helpful... now with better screens like n810 and all the hype about it, we bring it back... maybe not that good? maybe make it optional? Let's see more reports.
One idea I was thinking would be to add an 'undo' feature. So if you make an erroneous press you can undo it. Undo might be better than having to add pop dialogs of 'Are yuu sure' to solve this problem.
Also, is there a region of the screen (such as the strip on the right) reserved for scrolling with a finger? That way its impossible to press anything if you keep you finger there. Perhaps the 1/4 right side of the screen.

Many thanks to Lupin3D for the installation of Canola beta. Also the new file manager is terrific. Now we can see where all our files are going.
Everyone seems to think the problems we are having are due to all the activity on OS2008 inundating the Nokia servers. Does anyone know for sure? Is there firsthand knowledge? A company as big as Nokia would have fixed the problem a long time ago but the problem persists. Even at 4am. I can't believe there are that many N800 users up at that time. Is there a way to contact Nokia and find out for sure? Also the Canola people would have a vested interest in making sure this rollout works. I have not seen any dialog from them either.
Just so you don't think I don't know what I am talking about, I am a 30 year veteran of IBM mainframe operating systems and networks. I am new to Linux but catching on quickly. If only the naming conventions were more meaningful. I sometimes feel like I am reading Russian.
Anyway, Thanks again for all your help.

A simple fix for the scrolling would to have the scrolling on the right side of the playlist area, and the "click to play on left side"
So what happens if you are plugged into your PC via USB. Then you copy some files to the Canola watched folders from the PC to the tablet?
I had to un-mark and then re-mark the folder as watched to get C2 to notice the changes.
Your description seems to confirm that these files would be missed.
Actually, it is worse than this because if you leave the tablet connected via USB you cannot navigate to sub-folders when you go to "Settings". Simply unmarking and re-marking the top-level folder "Internal Card", say, does not refresh the underlying marked folders so you have to disconnect and navigate down to the target folder.
Where do I post a bug?

Hei =) We are always here =) And we were even more sad then the users with this repository problem. Why? simply because after so much work, so much problem... we finally made it.. and then BAM the repos goes down. But it happens, we are really cheering for them to fix it.
I personally asked permission to open a alternative repository, but I think people already did it,
So, we do have interest in everything in this working perfectly but its beyond our hands.

Not that the situation is at all acceptable or that I'm defending it, but I really get the impression from being new around here that the 'Internet Tablet Division' of Nokia is small, underfunded, and routinely pull their developers off of projects to work on other priorities. Yes Nokia is a large company, but they probably provide poor connectivity/hardware to the ITT division.

Hi, actully this is concerns more to me =) We are experimenting and improving this, but we want to make sure our future visions in the design are kept... it's easy to add icons, and clutter to the UI but we really want to avoid.
I know this may piss of some people, but I (say that because that is my job in the project) want to keep it as simple as possible and with less button as possible.
BUT we do acknowledge that the problem exists.. and we will fix it the best wy possible!

Don't add buttons or anything, just pretend there is an imaginary line that splits the screen, on left side you scroll, the right side allows for click and play. Then wouldn't have to add nothing on the UI, and it would function better.
Or better yet make it like a link on webpage were have to click on the text, and every else is scroll.

I grabbed the 2 script files that were linked in this thread. moved them to home/user then ran the command. I think it grabs them from amazon.com.... only about 60% of the albums have covers. but I guess thats good enough.. for now.. at least untill I figure out how to manualy add cover art.

Ebe, it may work, it may not... we will for surely test it (as we a testing th side scroll) and we will do some usability test .. and the best option will be there =)
I know this probably may sound too much for you, but believe some users will just not get it, and we want to be able to provide the best way.. so we will iterate upon our options and pick up the best one!
But don't worry.. a good solution will come =)

Yes yes don't worry =) the thing to hear from everyone is to really collect all cases, and try to not solve with a first solution, that can solve that particular problem and them not other. for example:
You said the text. Ok, not a problem, but imagine the guy having a video called
1.avi the smallest hit area ever : /
But Im thinking how to place a safe scroll (this can be optional) and then the "this songs optional touch space"
=)
I will try to post some solutions on my blog
