This is funny: To get TomTom to work:
The TomTom NAVIGATOR 5 software (for PDAs) for $150 has US maps. The TomTom MOBILE software works on Smartphones isn't available in the US. I purchased the Navigator software without knowing this.
I tried to install Navigator on the phone and it didn't work... even the latest 5.21 version. The installer crashes every time. I found a .torrent for the MOBILE software downloaded it. Since I have a $150 license for software and maps, I didn't feel bad about doing this.
I installed the TomTom MOBILE software then used the Maps installer software CD and had it install the maps to a folder on my hard drive. I then copied those maps to the device and started the TomTom software. It asked for an activation code and I used the code that came with my (legal/legit) copy of TomTom Navigator. It worked! It took some extra wiggling to get the iBlue GPS receiver paired to the phone (after installing it, you must create an incoming port on COM6 and an outgoing port on COM7) but it finally recognized the GPS receiver.
Such a pain in the butt ... Then I punched in a location and got in the car. WHOA. TomTom software is second to none. I wonder what's stopping them from releasing an official version of TomTom MOBILE for the US since it works so well once installed.
Anyway - thought I'd share a non-770 hack with you all.
