View Full Version : A new thread! PAY ATTENTION TO *ME*!!!

I'm starting a new thread with a non-descript title. I'm sure you've seen many of these types of thread titles before.

This will be my opportunity to whine like a spoiled child and/or ask questions that have been answered a hundred times before.

The rest of you should just continue to start your own threads of this type.

Please don't add to my thread with your own rant or question, no matter how on-topic your post would be, because that defeats the purpose of having needless redundant threads. You'll never find mine anyway, because the first thing you'll do is start a new thread instead of simply reading the forum or searching for an existing thread with the answer you are looking for.

Popping in with a quick redundant question and then leaving when you get someone to answer (and complaining if anyone tells you to search because it has been answered before) is soooo much more convenient than doing a little research of your own.

The key thing to remember is that your time is much more valuable than that of the people whom you expect to answer your redundant question. Keep that in mind and the rest will come naturally.

And if you ever get frustrated, please start your own thread to complain because your complaint is much more important than all those other people who complained in all those other threads before you. And don't complain to Nokia or whomever you're really mad at... tell us instead. And don't hold anything back, because the world needs to hear your whine so that you can feel better about yourself.

and dont wurry abt makin yur post reedable with spellin and puntuation and paragrafs and extry wrds words wurds and all thatcause that take s up yur own valuble time

In future I hope to add further tips, and possibly some real life examples from others who have perfected these techniques.

If you see someone else duplicating my efforts to waste forum members' time, you do have my permission to refer them to this thread. Who knows, if all of us lazy self-centered people come together, we may be able to devise new and better ways to waste the time of other members of this forum!

Oh, and ignore my .sig, it's not helpful to anyone, it's just another kind of rant and you have more important rants of your own.

There, now I feel better... just as expected.

Please post all complaints about improper posting to the improper posting thread. If there isn't one, please start one. The rest of us are tired of reading these sorts of complaints.

I suppose this is the right thread and the right time to wish you all a Merry Christmas, and a Happy Nokia New Year!! May you all get the N8x0 you are hoping will drop down the chimney in a few nights time.

Cheers for all the amusing/useful posts this last year. Reading the new posts always adds a little light to the odd boring day...

Alistair.

This thread isn't getting enough views in the middle of the night. I need an answer now, I can't wait a few more hours and I'm sure not going to search any harder than that 5 minute search I did already.

Oh hey.... I just remembered another good way to get attention!

Application Manager is a virus!

It stops downloading! You can't install any applications! It's a trojan worm-horse! Until Nokia fixes their servers, it is clear that Application Manager is really broken so it must be malicious! When will Nokia admit that they aren't supporting the n770 anymore?! It is just as good as the 7710 or the IBM N-series (IBM invented the Nokia N-series).

I know the correct thing to do now that I have posted 3 times in this thread is to start a new thread with a closely related but slightly different question. But I just can't bring myself to do it.

I guess there are still other people who are better at this than me.

I understand your frustrations.

But I don't think this is in the spirit of the ITT.

There are a great many n00b unfriendly Linux communities out there whose reference answers to any n00b help not only involve saying "use the search button" and "read the FAQ" but aso include various denegrating comments that just leave n00bs feeling afraid to ask for fear of attack by a community whose aims ought to be support.

Like it or not we're front line help for most of these people.

Instead of a smack button I'd prefer a "refer you to the FAQ/Wiki" button. Selecting this button has the effect of opening up an editable wiki page for the selectee and automagically referring the poster to said page. I reckon that's the best way to go about both updating the wiki and informing users out there of its existence. An updated wiki will eventually become the first port of call for these people.

The wiki page ought to have a "thankyou" button that deems whether or not the article was useful, with karma going to the editor.

Just my two pence.

Remember when I said that there were a lot of troubleshooting threads in the tablet-specific forums and that they oughtta go into troubleshooting and people told me I was a tool for thinking that?

*This* is what I was talking about. If someone needs a quick question answered, dump it into troubleshooting, redundant or not. The worst they should get back is a link to a post where it's already answered.

So far as the new threads complaining, as far as I'm concerned those are the people on the bus talking as loud as they can into their cellphones just to grace me with small tidbits of their lives. Annoying, but I don't think they'll go away.

But please... keep this in mind. All of this stuff can be daunting as hell to new users and they may not know all the ins and outs of etiquette here yet. Let's try not to bully them away no matter how much you might want to shove their tablet down their throat and watch them turn blue. :)

EDIT: AHHH BOOOO... I was using the white background theme. I forgot that the new "default" theme is gray. We don't have gray as a font color. BOO. It took away all my fun. Well most. Using black font on the default gray background almost makes it invisible. Of course now I've messed it up for anyone without the default theme.

So, now we have b*tching from both sides. A possible two-birds-with-one-stone solution could be an I-will-search-that-for-you autobot. Maybe give senior members and above a powerful button to unleash *their own autobot*. The senior member and above would of course have profile (and maybe programatic) control of their autobot.

...And they lived happily ever after.

Is there not a way they could code the software to require peeps to do a search prior to posting?

Don't know about that, however there's a very simple way (no code required) to AT LEAST make them look for a thread related to their problem/question/latest discovery and append it there instead of creating the Nth duplicate thread of the day... It's commonly used on other boards : just require a minimum "level" (number of posts, membership duration, karma, etc.) before new users are allowed to *create* new threads.

It's not something you do when you're just starting the forum, like Reggie did two years ago, but now that it has reached critical mass and may even be in danger of going ballistic, it could be a good idea...

PS: sorry for following up on gemniii's on-topic post, which is totally off-topic in this thread, but I just spent my daily humour quota in another one :-)

Another thread for us newbies to filter out! It wasn't long ago that there was this one (http://www.internettablettalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=12752). But that thread got everyone to agree that the real solution was a Wiki FAQ (http://www.internettablettalk.com/wiki/index.php?title=FAQs%2C_Problems_and_Solutions), which I then started. Very few have contributed to or used it. Just as I predicted, the most vocal people in support of it haven't done a bloody thing.

i know this thread is a joke, but honestly success rate of finding an answer by searching here is very minimal. search function is pretty basic.
there should be a sticky, how-to, or some master thread that links to other threads with solutions etc.

some topics include many many threads and solution is buried somewhere that would take months of reading to get through.

and between 770, 800, 810, and all the OS versions, the possible permutation of variables keeps increasing.

Search ITT with Google (http://www.google.com/cse?cx=005981223421171304650%3Awt9tjwf2kd4)

why not have volunteer mods deleting redundant threads and or posts.

i wouldn't mind if my question was redundant and got deleted, only if it meant that many more like it got deleted and answer was easier to find.

Actually it is quite easy using your own profile page via quick link.

If you are someone who answers posts regularly with useful solutions then you can quickly find and post a link to your own previous post.
The same goes if you have started constructive threads, these are also easy to find using your own dang profile page.

The only annoyance I have with this is that because of the minimum post size, you can't (as I often wished I could) simply reply to another members query with just the link.

Since no one else is rising to the occasion, I am taking it upon myself to restore the LOLster. I will now start demanding that noobs search for LOLst LOLs before posting anything LOLless. In addition, I will LOLby Reggie to replace the useless "Thanks" button with a much more helpful "LOL" button.

Let's all do our part! Help the endangered LOLs!

Your donations are welcome, but not tax deductable.

Thank-- er, LOL you.

I vote the highlight. Because when highlighting... you had to accidently read the stuff that was typed.

Reading the forum today I feel like I'm in a temporal loop. Every 3rd post is a repeat of something already covered. And duplicate threads are multiplying like rabbits.

I see GenAnt is up the creek because he's being too curt in his answers and not hand-holding enough.

I'm trying to restrain myself from commenting in the threads... I really am.

There seems to be a LOT of people who would rather start their own thread or post their own question, rather than read someone else's thread or read the answer that was previously posted.

I'm kinda hoping the place will implode from everyone posting and nobody reading. Then perhaps those on the periphery will be blown out of orbit and only the solid core will remain.

Thank heavens I have this thread for sanctuary. But my humour is too downtrodden at the moment from what I've seen today... I can't even manage a decent bit of sarcasm. :( I'll be back later.

Technut: Back to my point about the troubleshooting stuff. We've always wondered about how prolific tablets are out there, and I think we just got served notice that they've hit the mainstream. Every single tech msg board whether it be software or device related has hit the point we're at now. Usually the people who've been around for a while get up in arms and tear the new people a new something-else (read: any Linux forum) but I'd *really* like to see that not happen here.

I think restructuring might be needed (sorry Reggie, I could hear you sigh from here)... something like a Troubleshooting main forum and tablet or OS specific subforums. At this point it *does* look like a major chunk of the topics/subtopics need to be devoted to it.

I've always hated the idea of moderators (think "little Hitlers") but this stuff's gotta be moved to keep the forums usable. Ionno about you guys but I always like reading about new developments, not troubleshooting things that have been posted a zillion times... but I do try to at least be nice when/if I can answer the questions.

There seems to be a LOT of people who would rather start their own thread or post their own question, rather than read someone else's thread or read the answer that was previously posted.

That's exactly why I suggested, some posts back, that new users should be allowed to post only in existing threads, and be made to wait until they reach a certain level of posts and/or membership duration before they can create their own threads.

This seems to be common practice on a lot of boards, and is probably an option in vBulletin.

No one followed up when I first mentioned it (probably because this very thread is not meant for serious propositions :-), but I still believe now would be the right time to do this.

I'm kinda hoping the place will implode from everyone posting and nobody reading. Then perhaps those on the periphery will be blown out of orbit and only the solid core will remain.

The danger is that the opposite result is equally probable : the "solid core" leaving in disgust or going to lurk mode, with the forum contents turning to vacuum.

Funny you should mention that fpp. I hit this thread first because I actually wanted to read it and just spent 30 mins going through the rest of the topics.

This is insane. 90% of it is redundant.

This is a fantastic idea, aside from the fact that it's also going to lead to a lot more *****ing initially.

The whole irony of your action of starting a new post ,Technut, instead of continuing my original thread on this subject not long ago titled - this subject not searched, title ok?- is that you are doing here exactly what you are sarchastically whining about with your post here.

If someone asks a basic question but they do it in a polite and sincere way, the best response IMHO is to equally politely direct them to the newbies board.

I honestly don't think the wiki is for real newbies yet. I might even start a thread about this elsewhere, but suffice to say it's too inconsistent, too full of gaps, too full of out-of-date material, too misleading with topic titles and too unsure of its intended audience.

Thoughtfix on Nokia's payroll? Never heard that one. But I do hear he hangs out in the bushes at their business campuses and when they're done their lunches and go inside he runs out and stuffs his pockets with their discarded french fries until security chases him off and then he goes home and smells them.

(Ok, so I ripped 90% off that off of Family Guy.)

WHEN IS THIS GOING TO BE IMPLEMENTED ON MAEMO!?

Hedgecore

Heat is generated by fast moving particles. Maemo is too slow to generate heat. I've developed a workaround though, the temperature my forehead hits is close to that of lava after my 770 crashes several times in a 20 minute period and I fly into a rage. I've submitted my application to the developer discount program today and already sent off a slew of complaints about how long it is taking yesterday.
