View Full Version : [Canola] how to use default media player for videos ?

Title says it all. I'd like to use the default OS2008 media player for my videos since mplayer only plays my xvid files real choppy, so I can play my converted (mp4) files properly. Mplayer freezes with mp4 files.

It's nice to be an arse but at least take time to read my post. I'm not asking how to encode, I'm asking how to change in Canola the behavior so that it opens the default OS2008 media player instead of mplayer.
You're an a-hole.

WTF is wrong with you? Did someone piss in your cornflakes?
This is a new forum on a new subject. It could develop into a useful resource on this site.

I am sorry e-motion for this crap. I don't know the answer to your question but I will not point somewhere else and pretend I do.
Hopefully your thread will eventually give you the answer you need and can serve as a useful link for others in the future...

Well, I'm a newbie but I figured it out. On top of that, it fixes the stretching issue.
Go to home/user/.atabake, edit config and change general = mplayer to general = oms. Works like a charm.

No need to jump down my throat, guys. I was just trying to help with what I assumed to be relevant information. The original post was just a little unclear, and I made an assumption as to what the OP was looking for (and not an unreasonable one based on his post). There was no attitude in my post, implied or actual, I was just trying to help.
Guess I've generated a lot of ill will around here for some reason. :/
Also of note: I arrived here from the front page and didn't notice this was the Canola forum (it wasn't mentioned in the OP). It's funny how rudeness can go both ways.

From what I heard, if mplayer is installed, canola will use it by default. Check this reply from handful over at Jaiku: http://jmoney.jaiku.com/presence/21555248#c-629156
hi guys canola doesnt install mplayer but if it installed it uses it for vdeo playback. You dont need to set anything up but seems that we will place a settings to change back to default media player for those who prefer

Good deal dude and good post.
BTW, how did you "Go to home/user/.atabake" Through what means? File manager? Xterm?
(I know this is answered in the Wiki, but providing the answer here may add to this threads usefulness and help new members. It may also reduce future, redundant threads. :) )
And General, I'm sorry I snapped. No ill will here dude.

What I don't get is before answering the least that could be done is read the post. And I'm sorry but if you speak a correct english my post was very clear that I wasn't asking for help in encoding video files.
To answer your question YoDude, I had to use the emelFM2 file manager that is located on wardenclyffetower.com/maemofiles because otherwise I have no idea how to get to these directories.

WOW, thanks you guys! I installed Canola2 today and was so excited, then disappointed when it choked on videos. Turns out it's because I had installed mPlayer, which didn't work either. All I had to do was uninstall mPlayer and Canola uses the bundled media player as default, and voila! special thanks to Reggie!

Ok, but this method doesn't allow to play xvid/divx files any longer... Mine does allow me to play the mp4 files with the default player in Canola, and the avi files encoded in xvid/divx with mplayer also...

Ok... I found and edited .atabake's config file & changed general = mplayer to general = oms but my videos are still stretched :(. Did you also change the line: mplayer = mplayer ? What are you doing that I am not. Just for the record, I did try to reboot after changing the config, but didn't fix it.
Thanks :D

Sorry, but "mplayer = mplayer" is a typo from our part, it should read "video = mplayer", ok?
@e-motion: could you please edit your post, since it's the first, in order to add how to fix it? Also, it's weird some guys here having problems with MPlayer, most people just love it in order to play avi/divx encoded with 770-encode ;-)

I've also changed the config file to use OMS Media Player... but now it doesn't go to full screen when you tap the screen.
You can use the full screen button on the top of the device (n800) but it doesn't feel quite as nice from a usability point of view.
Anyone know how to fix this ?

I changed this in the .atabake config file as well now my config file looks like this:
audio = oms
video = mplayer
general = oms
Yet whenever I open an .avi video in mPlayer the screen displays correctly (not stretched). However, if I open the exact same .avi video in Canola it opens stretched. The same file won't even open in the builtin Media Player (probably a Divx - it's been a while since encoded it).
What am I doing wrong :confused: so sorry to be so dumb :o

Effectively, Canola will stretch the video if opening an .avi file. The built-in media player will not open an xvid/divx file. By just changing general = mplayer to general = oms, my mp4 files are not stretched and play properly because they use the built-in media player instead of mplayer (which can't play .mp4 files any faster than 1 frame per second anyway).
All this is on a final N810/OS2008 released this week, no idea why it wouldn't work for some of you but works fine for me. I didn't, however, change the mplayer = mplayer line in my config file. To sum up, this is what I have in my config file :
audio = oms
mplayer = mplayer
general = oms

Hmmm... The only difference I can really see is that you've upgraded the OS and I'm haven't (I'm holding off until the repositories are fixed & Maemo Extras is still b0rken).
I'll try this again, after I've upgraded. Thanks for the reply & help :D

Are you using a .mp4 file ? This will only work with mp4 files... AVI files will still be opened via mplayer and be stretched.

Ah... no, I'm trying to do this with an .avi file. When I open this file in mPlayer it's not stretched though - so Canola2 must be doing the stretching then. Thanks again for your help :)

@PinCushionQueen, e-motion: mplayer will always be stretched to 15:9, this is because we don't know the video size so far, so we create the window with that aspect and mplayer will always scale to fit it. The fix we see (but didn't have yet) is to check the video size and resize the window so it will be the correct aspect ratio.
@stooo: this is a known bug with our usage of OSSO media player and (I think) it was fixed already.

@ barbieri... Great, thanks... looking forward to the next update.
To anyone using a Mac, I've been using Handbrake to encode DVDs to MP4, and visual hub: http://www.techspansion.com/visualhub/ to convert old divx and avi stuff to a suitable mp4 format with 400x240 res. It's very easy to use and well worth the $23 shareware fee.

I decode all my videos in AVI format and by changing the
video = mplayer and general = mplayer setteings
to = oms it messes up the youtube plugin.
The work around for this if you are finding the same problem is to leave both of them as mplayer and then under
Media section at the top add the line
"avi = oms"
works like a charm, allowing it to use default for avi and mplayer for youtube.
