View Full Version : [Canola] Canola and OGG support

Canola works fine with the regular MP3 files that I have, but just doesn't see the OGG files within the same watched folders.

I installed the Ogg support package from Maemo...
(http://maemo.org/downloads/product/OS2008/ogg/) and while that helps in Kagu playing my OGG files, Canola doesnt seem to recognise or play the OGG files at all.

Is this missing in Canola and will be added in future or is there a current solution to this ?

Here's how I was able to get it to work:

1) Add add this catalog - http://tuomas.kulve.fi/debian
Dist: bora
Components: maemo

I personally deleted my existing Tuomas catalog that was Chinook instead of Bora, not sure if it's absolutely needed though.

2) install libvorbis0a

3) install this deb http://kenneth.christiansen.googlepa..._0.3_armel.deb

4) I can't remember if I rebooted or not, but probably did.

5) Enjoy your oggs :D
this should give you OGG support

I got it working with nearly the same steps but with tuomas' chinook repository and a reboot was not required. Nice :D

Interesting... libvorbis0a was missing from my Chinook Tuomas repo. Ah well, at least we both got it working. I'll try again with the Chinook repo instead of the Bora, maybe the repo was updated?

I entered the toumas repo,

but I cant find the libvorvis library either (tried both the bora and chinook repos)

Nor can I parse the link in point #2 to a proper link.

Nikem, how did you get the library or the .db file mentioned ?

Nikem
12-23-2007, 03:16 PM
The correct link to the file is: ogg-support-lms_0.3_armel.deb (http://kenneth.christiansen.googlepages.com/ogg-support-lms_0.3_armel.deb)
One step I did even before installing canola2 was to install "ogg-support" (v0.4) from the chinook-repository of tuomas.kulve.fi to get the ogg-support for the default mediaplayer.

I have to drop the app manager into red pill mode to get libvorbis0a installed, I could then install ogg-support-lms from cmd line.

The default media player now sits on a endless "Refreshing Library" loop, and canola now finds and opens the .ogg tracks but doesn't play them, and ideas?

(Am using ITOS 2008 on an n800)

Thanks Nikem for the link.

I didnt install the libvorbis liobrary (could find it in the Toumas repository). But I had the older OGG support package installed.
I only installed the ogg-spupport-lms.deb file (had to do from command line, using dpkg, it didnt work from the Application manager).

Now Canola does show and play all my ogg files beautilfully.
Thanks for the helping hand everyone.

After following the steps above, I had to uninstall and reinstall Canola before it would find my OGGs.

FWIW, I finally updated to the new OS2008 on my N810 this morning and as a result, I had to reinstall Canola2 as well as ogg support. This time however, I didn't need to follow all of these extraneous steps - I just installed Canola2, Tuomas ogg support and mPlayer. My oggs worked from the start. **Note: I did use the Temporary Maemo Extras repo found @ gronmayer.com.

So if you're still having ogg support problems, perhaps you should try to uninstall and reinstall :D

Interesting... libvorbis0a was missing from my Chinook Tuomas repo.

My ogg-support -package doesn't provide the slow floating point version of the vorbis decoder (libvorbis0a) but the integer only version, i.e. Tremor (libvorbisidec) which is significantly faster on n8x0.

I tried the instructtions with Canola 2 beta 2 in my 770 with OS2007HE and I could not get Canola to recognize my Vorbis files. :-(

I tried both with Tuomas' ogg-support for bora and with mogg 0.2, and none of them seem to work (I did install the linked ogg-lms-support package and libvorbis0a).

I wonder if I can try with Tuomas' chinook packages on OS2007HE...

Bye & Good Luck!

I am having some difficulty getting this up:
+os2008 on an n810
+ogg support works for default player
+the given repo is added

-I do not have libvorbis0a package to install
-using the link for ogg-support-lms gives an "incompatible application package" error.

What am I doing wrong?

Any help would be appreciated much -thanks

Hi Davis,

I'm forwarding this to kenneth to see what happened. I think we updated the LMS and this may have broken the packages.

thanks for the report...

Hi Davis, yes we were missing the package updates, it's now being generated again. We actually wanted to have in the same batch, but we need others packages from the ogg support to be on extras, and they cannot be there (AFAIK) still.. so we will put on the website a easy .install file for it.

Sorry for the trouble, thanks for the report!

Hi Davis, it only works with the unreleased version, just hang on a little bit more and we will release everything :)

Ogg Support v0.6

Just to add my voice to inability to add ogg support to Canola. It doesn’t make any difference in what sequence Canola and OggSupport is installed or uninstalled.

Also I tried to install
http://kenneth.christiansen.googlepages.com/ogg-support-lms_0.3_armel.deb
but get “incompatible application package” error. Again, any uninstall/reinstall sequence makes no difference.

All of my music files are in ogg format and I really ook forward to the results of your efforts in this.

Hmm does ogg support still cause problems with voice in/out? I read that was a bug in OS2008 (would sometimes cause mutes in voice in or out in Skype/Gizmo/etc.. voice calls).

The last I saw it still caused problems with the inbuilt Google Video Chat. This drove me and my brother nuts for a long time before the reason was forthcoming.

It caused the mutes you refer to you and also break up and distortion. Several times we found ourselves reverting to using the telephone to speak and the tablets to watch.

Canola is getting better and better fast. Team is working hard so thanks for this lovely application. I'm just wondering how is situation about oggs at the moment? I have updated to beta7 but Canola won't show nothing when browsing folder containing oggs.

hi Markku, it just misses on package, that it being worked on. I take the blame because I didn't check if the guys were updating it also, and it needed you guys to complain so I could see the error.

we are running with that, but it needed a little bit more tricks than just compile again.
Next week I promise is there. (today is a holiday here in Brazil )

Thanks for the understanding Markku, actually all complaining are listened :) maybe we will not implement some that are not in our goals, but ogg is quite important, and unfortunately we did a amateur failure : / we will make it up with ogg users again :)

my ogg's still worked after an update to beta 7. however canola did not seem to realize when the song ended as even though the there would be 0:00 remaining it would not automatically go to the next song.

long story short and one reflash later im in the same boat and can't find the floating point ogg lib.

is it possible the integer only ogg lib be used for better speed?

Hi Jchord, we don't do anything related to the ogg besides adding support to the scanner. Of course could be bugs between the messages when they are exchanged between the player and canola, and we can take a better look.

The official package for the beta8 is coming, and for support about the libs you should check out tuomas kulve page, hes the one maintaing this :)

Cheers,

MArcelo

I had the same problem and it looks like it is related to mplayer ...
I modified my ~/.atabake/config : add "ogg = oms" at the end of section "[Media]" to force Canola to use the built-in media player and it did the trick ...

But then I had installed ogg support before updating to beta 7 ...

markku

How about the mogg 0.4.1 package from Tilman Vogel? Is that support package for ogg-vorbis also valid with Canola beta8?

fredoll
04-02-2008, 12:13 PM
From what I understand, Canola would support any file that is supported by the built-in media player or mplayer ...
So if you add support for ogg file to the built-in media player it's fine (be it with ogg support or mogg)
BUT the only thing is that it may not see those files ... that is where you need to install support for scanning ogg files (it is available from one of the dev personnal site and handful referenced it earlier in the thread ...)

handful
04-02-2008, 04:34 PM
Yeah Fredool you're right, if your default media is able to play it, using =omg on the configure from atabake will do the trick. the missing thing coming in the next release is the new package for the LSM (scanner) support :)

PinCushionQueen, thanks for this ogg/canola help. May I suggest that you Edit your Post #2 (which is where Marcelo's canola beta "manual" (http://openbossa.indt.org.br/canola/using.html#formats) sends the ogg-desiring canola user) to include Nikem's Post #6 link so that people won't have to go searching for it unnecessarily?

using "dpkg -z /media/mmc2/lightmediascanner0-ogg_0.1.9-maemo1_armel.deb" as stated on the site gives me "dpkg: unknown option -z" my guess is the z is a typo. however l am not shure what option i should use.

Edit: "dpkg -i /media/mmc2/lightmediascanner0-ogg_0.1.9-maemo1_armel.deb" leaves me with dependency problems as it looks for libvorbis0a

Hi all,

I've got the problem here. The lightmediascanner0-ogg package is depending on libvorbis0a which is not installed by ogg-support package. I'm now building the packages again with this issue fixed. I'll post here again as soon as they're uploaded to the server.

Sorry for the annoyance.

etrunko
04-07-2008, 06:59 PM
I've just found the problem is not as simple as it seems. The lightmediascanner0-ogg package actually depends on libvorbis0a. If the former is installed without the latter, it won't work at all. So, until we don't come with an appropriate solution for this issue, would you please perform the following installation steps:

1) Install ogg-support from application manager (instructions in http://ogg.garage.maemo.org)

2) Install libvorbis0a package manually either using application manager in red pill mode or typing the following command in xterm *AS ROOT*

# apt-get install libvorbis0a

3) Finally, download and install the lightmediascanner0-ogg package using either application manager in red pill mode or typing the following command in xterm *AS ROOT*

# dpkg -i path/to/lightmediascanner/package

I'll work on the proper solution together with Tuomas Kulve where we'll provide a dummy package called "canola-ogg-support" or something, which will install the correct dependencies so that canola can play and scan ogg files.

Sorry for the annoyance once again.

Until all the repos are sorted, could you update the Canola page (http://openbossa.indt.org/canola/using.html) to point to the relevant part of this thread? The current method on there doesn't work and is a bit confusing.

I had to re-flash my N800 after a slight accident in the terminal (hint: typing 'apt-get upgrade' and tapping 'Y' is not a good idea!), and it was by pure chance I found this thread while trying to make OGG support work.

PS: Thanks for stopping me from having to buy an iPod ;)

Hmm... here's a slightly irritating "feature"...

Canola playing MP3s works fine. Canola playing OGGs stops playing after every track, requiring me to manually press "next track" to hear more music.

This is a fresh install of OS2008, Canola and the OGG libraries.

run canola -vvv on xterm.. try pressing the next button and send us what's on the terminal.

Maybe a bug, and we can fix it

I think there's something not quite right with the OGG part maybe detecting the end of the music. What happens is that the music stops, the time display shows "-00:00" but the play/pause button still shows "pause" and I can pause and unpause still. So it looks like Canola still thinks there's something playing.

I'm having the same behavior from Canola. It worked fine with the last versions, only the newest release can't finish oggs. Since most of my music is oggs I hope this'll get fixed soon. Can I help with my console output? This is just starting and playing one song, with no interaction when it didn't finish (stayed at -0:00 but didn't stop):

I am beginning to think there is something wrong with my tablet! I followed the instructions given in the previous post and I have still have no ogg files in canola. I can see/play them in media player, I can play them in canola if I start a podcast and let it continue on. I have no files when I try to view my music though. I double checked I had the files installed- and they are all there. So what am I doing wrong?

Hi Davis,

Did you selected the folder where your .oggs are in the media library -> folders?

Also : I know you followed the instructions, but one "/" wrong or missing slash or things like that can mess up everything : / can you make sure you did it "100%" equal to the instructions?

This is a little bit more complicated thing to help because there's no easy way to debug this : /

Marcelo,
Thanks for the reply. Yes I have the folder selected. I tried selecting the parent directory, and then I at least had media- my podcasts all showed up.
100% ? As I said, I checked that both libvorbis0a and lightmediascaner were installed-which they were. Is there a better more complete way of verifying ?

I'm trying to verify that with Etrunko (who is doing the easier packages with Tuomas by now) But is harder as this is not related to Canola itself and indeed to the scanner (LMS).

I need to check with him if theres a way to make the scanner print some error information to help you

Would those instructions work with mogg instead?

The speex codec in ogg-support breaks voip so i'm a bit more inclined towards mogg.

If you need more, please let me know.

This problem was already encountered : it looks like a problem with mplayer so you have to edit your .atabake/config file to associate ogg with the built-in player => ogg = oms (if memory serves)

I'm sure handful (or a search in the same topic for beta7) can complete this ...

Yeah, same here now. Having just bought an N810 I'm going back through this.

I think the link to the lightmediascanner0-ogg package was on the Canola site, but it seems to have gone, or it wasn't. Googling for it just brings up this thread and nothing else.

Today (2006-04-26) I followed the directions found here:

(click the link in the footnote that says: "you must follow this instructions" )

lightmediascanner0-ogg:

Also, for those of you who want to continue to use voip function in gtalk... open xterm and type:
sudo gainroot
cd /usr/lib/gstreamer-<0.10 or something.. it may vary>
mv ./libgstspeex.so ./old_libgstspeex.so

Worked for me.

Hmm that's odd.

In version 0.4 of lms, it says ogg-support (>=0.2)

Maybe it will work with 0.6? (But I think that is a mistake on the author's part. 0.7 doesn't exist, maybe thats why 0.4 was made?)

Ok, thanks to AStorm/AstralStorm for testing this out.

This is lightmediascanner0 with the ogg-support pointing to 0.6 (which actually exists :p)
http://www.mediafire.com/?im21s1n2mg1

You will also need a newer libvorbisidec which can be obtained from here:
https://garage.maemo.org/frs/download.php/2423/libvorbisidec1_1.2.0-2_armel.deb

According to AStorm,

<AStorm> new one loads faster :)
<AStorm> visibly
<AStorm> as fast as MP3
<AStorm> and seems to skip less (none)
<AStorm> definitely an improvement

:). I'd be interested to hear other experiences as I don't use OGG's atm :)

This was discussed earlier and the mogg and the ogg-support has a bit different goals and therefore we didn't come up with a plan to have only one ogg project for maemo.

Hi Vinc,

As you probably heard Diablo's new way for deploy software implicates that the build must be done on the server, so until the ogg support code is not uploaded there(by the maintainers) our ogg support for diablo will not work, because it can't get compiled...

So sorry for this but we are also waiting for the ogg developers...

Kulve: the problem is that it adds from Chinook, and Canola-ogg support for Diablo is built following the diablo rules, on the server. So we cannot do hacks on this. Once Ogg support is ON DIABLO repositories, our ogg support in the scanner will be able to compiled as well. today it will give "no dependencies" :/

Do you mean that the ogg-support must be buildable on the new style servers from sources as well? That might be hard since I'm using existing packages which I have modified (gst-plugins-*). And those probably cannot be rebuilt there as there is already source packages named like that?

The other problem is that the metalayercrawler seems to unable to find oggs in diablo anymore with my hacks. So we need to find new tricks for diablo.

The ideal solution would be for Nokia to actually ship the Vorbis decoding plugin from upstream. Or let kulve help them out with gstreamer?

I wonder if a strategy similar to how the Livna repository (3rd party non-free for Fedora) packages xine's non-free plugins might work: build the entire modified gstreamer framework (with a single .dsc), and then just exclude or remove the files already packaged by Nokia.

Is there any reason why the scanner requires Ogg gstreamer playback support for just reading the tags? I think this is the real "bug" here, and is certainly a show-stopper for Canola on Diablo.

Ogg playback is still possible via mplayer. The only piece missing in the Canola-Diablo-Ogg puzzle is the scanner.
Don't you think so?

handful
08-28-2008, 09:25 AM
Oycage : yes, it is, but as you read Tuomas answers, the code is not on diablos build server. We can just make a deb and install, but we thought that the support was going into extras, so to enter extras you need to user THEIR build system, and our ogg support depends on Tuomas support.

So now that we know that it's not going to be there, we will do the ugly way and make a deb and place on the website for download.

To read the tags (I will ask etrunko to back me up here) it really needs the lib, but I think you deserve a better answer :)

Marcelo

pycage
08-28-2008, 10:59 AM
Yeah, I know that it needs the lib, but I don't really see a reason why. :)

A little C code for parsing the Ogg tags is no big thing, and Ogg tags are not such a mess like ID3. ;)
There's plenty of free C code for Ogg tag parsing around, I think.
This could help Canola with Ogg on Diablo since getting ogg-support on Diablo is such a problem.
It would also make the LMS smaller in size and more performant on Oggs.

Just my 2 ¢. :)

AFAIK, there is no problem in rebuilding a package which is already in the repositories. At least, this is not a problem for extras/extras-devel repositories, don't know if this applies to the official nokia packages. It's a good test case. :)

The other problem is that the metalayercrawler seems to unable to find oggs in diablo anymore with my hacks. So we need to find new tricks for diablo.

As canola does not use the metalayer crawler, this problem does not affect us at all. But to provide the support "natively" in the built-in media player, it is a must.

Definitely! They should support Ogg out-of-the-box. Let's hope the new HTML5 specification (which recommends Ogg as baseline format) helps to change things. Please vote for maemo bug #176 (https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=176). Looks like they are working on the issue.

This 3rd party (free and non-free) infrastructure is already there. I've worked together with Maemo's webmaster and only with that we could have Canola working on Diablo.

Even if it would succeed it might be a bit odd for those who would like to get source for the Nokia's version of the gstreamer and "apt-get source gstreamer-something" would fetch my sources if the extras/extras-devel repository is in the sources.list.

But that's a "problem" already if one has my repo in the sources.list..

Lightmediascanner only needs libogg and libvorbisidec (a bit patched) to read the tags from ogg. The playback support is responsibility of either osso-media-server (thus the gst-plugins-*) or mplayer.

Ogg playback is still possible via mplayer. The only piece missing in the Canola-Diablo-Ogg puzzle is the scanner.

The vorbisidec comes from the gst bad, so it could be built ok I guess, but the ogg-support packages provides also ogg demuxer (from base) speex (from good) and theora (from base).

And Nokia's base doesn't provide theora and Nokia's good doesn't provide speex nor ogg demuxer, so I need to modify those source packages to provide new binary packages for these plugins.

So have your source package contain the tarballs for base, good and bad, and just compile the parts you need? If Debian's packaging system does not allow for multiple tarballs (still? RPM handles multiple sources fine), make your own composite tarball.
