Newbie just got a Nokia N800 yesterday, updated to OS2008 immediately.
Now, how can I make the VOIP SIP work? I'm in US and using viaTalk VOIP, viaTalk supports SoftPhone like Xten, and provides only the following parameters for generic SIP setting:

Display Name; User name; Password and Proxy Server.

and here is viaTalk's instruction for setting the Xten softphone:

In the OS2008 SIP account settings, how can I make it work? I entered the Proxy Server in the box after the "@"... it never been able to connect.

Try Gizmo - I use it and connect to the PBX at my office - works fine.

I just tried this and it works fine for me.

Went to my viatalk account page (aka "Control Panel") and logged in.

Selected "Softphone configuration"

Use any of the three offered configs to get the info you need:

Username - your 11-digit viatalk phone/account number; like 19871234567 - 1 (one), 987 - area code, 1234567 - 7-digit local phone number

Domain/Server/Realm/Proxy - something like: detroit-4.vtnoc.net (bogus example)

Your SIP-only password

In you N800, click:

Internet Call
Add Account (if this is your first time), or [Menu] -> Tools -> Accounts... -> New
Select service for account: SIP, Next
User name: 19871234567 @ detroit-4.vtnoc.net
Password: (SIP password from control panel)
Next...
Account name: Viatalk-4567 (for example)
Finish-button

And... it... just... worked!

p.s. - BTW, Viatalk (http://www.viatalk.com) is good, cheap and allows customers to connect any old SIP phones and Asterisk (or whatever it's called this week). I'm just a customer. (I could've provided info that'd get me a refer-a-friend spiff, but that's not appropriate here, IMO)
