Google on the forum has not produced an answer, so maybe asking will :)

I am looking for an IRC client for the N800 running 2008. I have tried pidgin and it works but it's not that good an IRC client.

gronmayer.com/it lists xchat as available in Maemo Hackers, that fails install wanting some libraries that gronmayer says are available in Maemo Chinook, but adding that repository doesn't find them and xchat still won't install.

Any other clients? Any success in getting xchat working on OS2008?

Google (http://www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=skyhusker+xchat+chinook&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8): skyhusker xchat chinook

http://zeus.rm-fr.net/~skyhusker/xchat-chinook-betas/

Never woulda guessed that in a thousand years, would you (though I have mentioned it more than once somewhere around here :p)? ;)

The drawbacks of searching I guess - I was trying to narrow down to 2008 after wading through a lot of threads about 2006 so added OS2008 and got nothing. (Hence liberal googlebait of IRC client for OS2008 get your Xchat here!)

And have to search on OS2008 as otherwise you get dates :(

Thanks for that. Installed and working fine.

Also, the new RTCOMM beta update allows you to connect to IRC using the built-in chat function.

It works, some of the time. The rest of the time it says "Network Error" and nothing else so it's impossible to know what went wrong.

If you have a Linux/Unixish box somewhere, you can use a terminal based IRC client like irssi and a program called screen. Then you can SSH into that machine and continue using IRC as if you were at that machine. :)

Search tip: When searching google for apps, try replacing the OS version with the OS "release name" if you don't find what you're looking for:
OS2006 = mistral, scirocco, gregale
OS2007 = bora
OS2008 = chinook
OS2009 = diablo

EDIT: fixed typo: OS2008 is chinook. should have hit preview...

I also find adding "maemo" helps with finding NIT specific builds of generic linux apps.

Xchat works fine after you add the hildon stuff it complains about being missing. And after you add them, Pan, the newsreader, also works.

Do you know if these also work with this new Diablo OS update?

Yes, it works fine. Diablo is just a maintenance release and is 99% backwards compatible with Chinook.

Thanks.

It just looks like that this is one of those programs that I cant install after Diablo update..

It says that some parts of software package are missing.. Same problem with Colem, Speccy, Personal Menu..

Mika, go to your repository listing and add chinook to the distribution line on your repositories.

Right now it probably says diablo only and since there aren't that many diablo repositories yet, you need to add the chinook ones back in, so just change it from diablo to
chinook diablo

Thanks..

How I do that...

I did find place under software management that had few Nokia, maemo extras, garage extras, Gizmo Catalogue, Maemo extras catalogue..

Is this correct place? And what/how I add..

yes, right place
Generally, you'll edit the particular repository and on the distribution line add chinook and a space before diablo.

Hi. I wanted to set up my nokia 770 as a shell box, so I have compiled irssi for it. I have the os2008 on it (chinook). anyone who wants the bins contact me and i'll put them up for you. I might not be back to this site in a while, so the best place to reach me is irc.partyvan.fm #fm.. same name.

slightly off topic for this thread... (I just updated my N800's to diablo, and haven't yet done so for my N810, so I'm just getting into the swing of diablo)

are repo's having both chinook and diablo versions, or are they just having chinook versions (or just diablo versions?)

can we add 2 versions of each repo (one for chinook, one for diablo)?

should we do that (have double repos as in the last question)?

or should we only use the diablo repo where available, and only use the chinook repo when a diablo repo isn't available?

For example.. tschmidt's osso-statusbar-cpu is only available in his chinook repo (he doesn't have a diablo repo at all right now) ... so, I assume I'll just keep that in my repo list. If he had a diablo repo, would the best practice be to have _both_ repos in my repo list, or just the diablo repo (assuming it also had osso-statusbar-cpu)?

And, I'm sorry if this was covered in another thread...

I am also looking for some "scriptable" + "finger friendly" irc client to use with bip+minbuf proxies ..
