View Full Version : U.S. developers get go-ahead to buy N810, sort of

Nokia has experienced some delays in making devices available to the 500 developers and bloggers (and other contributors? did anyone receive a discount for contributing documentation?) who qualified for the maemo device program discounts. (See this thread in the ITT forums, for instance.)

This morning, the next-to-last* on the list -- contributors buying from the U.S. stocks -- were notified that they could now apply their discount code to purchase a Nokia N810 Internet Tablet.

Alas, the usual glitches are still preventing this -- developers report Friday morning that inserting a discount code results in either an "invalid code" or "zero balance" response and operators at Let'sTalk.com who hanclle phone orders decline any knowledge of the discount.

I'm posting this info now in hopes that someone at Nokia might see this and straighten things out.

* * *

Anyone in the U.S. who succeeds in purchasing an N810 with the device discount, please let us know by commenting on this post, especially if you needed to do something counter-intuitive to get the code accepted. Thanks!

Added later: Finally straightened out! See post 23 below!

And even later: First ones through may have been treated well but late callers have heard that the N810 is "back-ordered" with a three-week delay in shipping.

US isn't last on the list. Canadians are (unless I missed something). We got told "more information coming next week" on the e-mail that ignored the US entirely... but haven't gotten anything at all since.

When I applied I specifically indicated I wouldn't be doing any development, I got the code and have been waiting like everyone else since Nov. See my post (http://www.fabianrodriguez.com/blog/archives/2007/11/12/joining-the-nokia-n810-maemo-device-program/) about my initial intentions in the project.

Yes, Nokia recognizes that there are ways to contribute other than through software development, and so the discount program was named "N810 Maemo device program" this time around, instead of "developer device discount program."

Well, nevermind. It's now out of stock and the codes still don't work. ETA Jan. 19!

I don't even see a spot on the Canadian Nokia site where you can put *any* discount code ... nevermind have it accept it as valid.

I am seriously jonesing for an N810.

Last mail, on the maemo-developers mailing list, from Quim states:

US has the interface to handle the maemo codes almost completed. It was
apparently ready but there was an issue during the testing yesterday.
The fix should be simple but I still haven't got a date due to the
different timezones. Contributors having selected the US shop will
receive an update and instruction as soon as the service is available.

Canada should be ready to handle the maemo program requests by the end
of this week.

Good news (for Canadians at least)!

The Canadian site finally accepts discount codes. Final tally for an N810 is 177.36 CAD including all tax and shipping.

Don't forget to click the "Process your order" button near the end ... it is not obvious that you are not done ... and then go grab a snack ... The Canadian site is dog-slow.

Yep, I just place my order on the nokia.ca shop. Dog slow, had to go through VISA's registration thing, but worked. See:

We've heard them all ... and made up most of them.

No fears, we will still have to wait for summer thaw before they can ship them in the less snowy month. So by that time, you folks should have them too ;]

Seriously though, how long does it take them to stick it in a box and give it to the purolator guy? Or does Nokia have one of those useful systems that gives you the tracking number right after you've unpacked it and have used it for a week.

I thought you had to get things shipped when the water is still frozen, isn't that how ice roads work?

That ice must be fast because I got my N810 at noon yesterday. My withdrawal symptoms are subsiding.

But it was within a few hours before the UPS guy came to my door that I got the email with the tracking #. But it did beat the delivery this time.

It was a long wait but worth it. Thanks Nokia!

Maybe someone would like to correct the headline of this thread to read.
"US community lied to again!"

I'm done with nokia, and all the lies, half truths and empty promises.
"Next week" Sure I'll wait for next week again and again we'll get some
pile of bull saying how they are just about ready but there is just one
more issue.

I called letstalk.com last week to ask when the developer's code would be ready. Instead of telling me, they offered to take my order at the developer's price. I placed an order at full price and then within a couple of hours a supervisor overrode the price. Now I have my N810. Thanks Maemo/Nokia!

The saga finally ends: new e-mail, new update, worked like some type of charm.

Had to call in and do all sorts of talking to get them to ship it to my office and not my home. Yay billing address!

No. As I said done with nokia. Got the 810, but can't enjoy it due to the frustration of the situation, and Quim's statement:
Those contributors that already got the N810 have been sending good reports.
Read: You complained about your whipping so we don't like you anymore.

Sorry, I tried to provide some suggestions in a calm manner, after Quim decided to state on Dec 15 that "next week the codes go live" and then goes on holiday, never making sure that it got carried through or that an immediate apology was issued when they first knew that it wouldn't happen.
I never saw a reply, so yes I get upset.

Maybe Wimax will get me excited again, but for now adieu, and best wishes to y'all.

I cannot find any way that you derived that conclusion from the statement you quoted.

N810 received today. Been getting compliments all day at work from my WM6 and iPhone toting colleagues.

Will be producing an OS2008 Bluetooth PAN solution soon as penance for never believing I'd actually get mine. :D
