Hello,

As I understand Canola2 uses mplayer as backend. Standalone mplayer can play FLACs on my N800 but those file are not seen in Canola2. How to enable them from GUI?

TIA

Hah, FLAC's on the N800. As cool as that would be, they're giant.

Regardless, I guess Canola doesn't recognize them, even though MPlayer can play them.

Marcelo will probably post in this thread, so have no fear.

Hi Syntra and hi vvaz =)

Yes, here I am =) So the thing is : The Mplayer in canola is the same. The thing is that our Scanner is not (YET) indexing the flac files. For sure we will add this support (as is just a new type of supported media etc). So I see no problem of adding the support if people need it =)

Hi Marcelo!

I was dead on, eh?

I'm gonna assume we'll be seeing FLAC reading in the release?

Thanks :) We need this. With cheap 4GB SD cards I can commit 3GB of space for music. This is 10 CDs in flac format - enough for 2-3 days of listening in great quality.

I would also love to see flac support in Canola2. Nearly all of my music is in flac, and I've been holding out buying a memory card until one of the media players supports flac.

Yup, same here. I play them with mplayer, but a nice frontend would be very nice!

Hi guys,

We added a basic support ( no tagging / browsing abilities) but it's seems to be working..
it would be nice to hear from you if it's working with your files! Next update we will implement the tagging system..

FLAC's great - I'm playing FLAC files on Canola2 now.

Any idea when you can implement support for tagging and images embedded in the FLAC files (ID3v2)?

My other big ask would be DAAP support so that I could use Canola2 to get at the music I've ripped onto a Firefly server - any chance of that?

Thanks

Well, it was uspposed to be getting, as it was implemented. If not I think it's just a case of adding this in next release.

The Daap support (from Canola1) was removed due to other issues. We really don't know if we are going to put it back! but we will keep informed.

I'm curious how you are managing to play FLAC files in Canola2. I've just been trying that without success - I copied a few FLAC files into a new directory on my N800, and tried to add the folder to the Canola media library, but the library rescan took forever and eventually failed (I suspect some canola subprocess must have crashed, because subsequent attempts to rescan had no effect at all, until I exited and restarted canola).

The files themselves played fine in mplayer. Maybe something wrong with the tags?

Gtallan : send us (private message me) the files and we can take a look : )
That's how we fix when sombody has problems and it's possible a bug in our scanner.

If you want to check the source : go to garage and search for LMS (light media scanner)

+1 (I'll add my vote for DAAP :) )

I've got FLAC files playiing on my N800, copied 1 folder/directory = 1 CD over from my PC. This inclludes an M3U playlist file a jpg & a png album art files and the FLAC files hv 300x300 album art images embedded in their ID3v2 tags.

I have the most recent updates installed, 2.0.0 beta 7.

Canola sees the playliist & the files but doesn't seem to use the tag info - is that the expected behaviour at this time?

I have experienced a few funnies but not consisttently enough to report bugs yet, e.g. a momentary louder burst at the start of a track.

Keep up the good work, I waited a while before upgrading to OS2008 & Canola2 but when I did the improveements hv been fantastic, my N800 really has become so much more stable & usable.

Vaiodon: not, FLAC is using libflac to get the tags, and it should be working, but it seems that is not a proble of your build : / I think we should investigate, maybe the code is not working fine in this case.

About the louder buster : I have wrote here a couple of times one thing to do : set the volume (on the default media player) to zero or very low, close it, then open canola again. What happens is when canola sets the volume, the default media engine agent goes there and set back to "it's" position, causing this loud buster for a second or so.

Thanks, we are trying to fix a lot, and the new release is alreayd in great shape :
last.fm is working great, audioscrobbing is working, podcast is getting a better list (with description) you can access description while playing also and more and more to come :)

Ok, thx for keeping on top of this. I decided to add another folder of FLAC files (being another complete CD, file set as above: media files with ID3v2 tags incl 300x300 JPG artwork, separate JPG and PNG artwork).

After browsing into into Settings, selecting the new folder & refreshing the playlist information went to crap.

I can't make any sense of it. How do I clear what Canola's ingested from its media search to start again and debug. If you hv any pointers to docmtn on how that work pls reply - I haven't much time till l8r in the week to go digging.

I know FLAC's might seem a bit extreme for a portable device but with 8 & 16GB SDHC cards available now, why not?, saves me transcoding as I've decided to use FLAC as my "gold" copy.

Vaiodon :

The full scanner source code is available in garage undet he name Light Media Scanner

http://lms.garage.maemo.org/

We are using libflac to do the scanning of flac files, but for sure it's highly probable that we have a bug on it.

About the album art, I asked chenca (canola-tuning) is responsible and we are indeed not getting embedded album art for files that are not mp3.

But canola-tuning should get the folder png for sure.

I don't mind about being extreme or not, I just hope you understand that FLAC is a choice of a small number of users when compared to mp3 etc, thus we really focus our effort on higher priority items.

Anyways, if we have time we will look bck into it trying to improve. if you find the bug by looking at the code, even if you don't make a patch but send where the problem is I will do my best to integrate a patch asap.

Cheers,

Marcelo
