Hey there,

I've been working all evening on getting up to speed on this palm syncing technology. I just wonder if someone could brief me on how the palm desktop and my Nokia N800 will comunicate? I'm not sure if it's by bluetooth or some other technology. My laptop doesn't appear to have bluetooth.
So far I have the Garnet VM on my n800 and the Palm Desktop software version 4.1.4 running on a windows xp home edition which I read is supported by Palm. I have tried using both the computer's IP address and the name I set up for it in the hot sync dialogue box in Garnet.
So what do I need now? Obviously Hotsync is not working for me.
I'm guessing I need to buy a USB Bluetooth adapter, but I read an earlier post here where one of you thought the GVM didn't recognize bluetooth. So how do they talk?

Thanks,
Neil

You need to set the the hotsync on the pc to allow network hotsyncs for the user you want to sync with. Then enter the ip address of the pc in garnet vm. Doesn't always work just try again. I had never used network hotsync with a palm before so i don't know how well it compares to the real thing. If you have a palm that can do it handy you could try a network hotsync with it to see if that works. I suppose the other thing to check is firewall settings for the hotsync on the pc.

Network hotsync is the only way. I haven't tried to do a hotsync with GVM - in fact I removed it because it's just not worth the effort. It's a kludge at best. I'm using my Palm for PIM and other stuff, and the Nokia for internet use.

I have now tried all the possible setting changes on both my PC and in Garnet and Sync keeps failing. I think part of the problem is the lack of settable options in the Hotsync dialogue box in GVM. One option might be to use a wireless router since both my N800 and lap top can connect to that although maybe this would set up a security problem for my lap top. Anyway, I found a good web page that covers a lot of these procedures here : http://www.palmzone.net/content.php?pid=20

That page explains both the ad hock direct link and the WIFI based link.
BTW, I also tried just linking my N800 to mylap top in connection manager but that didn't work either.

make sure that after enabling the lan sync option, you also change windows firewall settings to include palm desktop as an exception. sounds basic but hey so am i

I am connecting via a wireless router well pc is connected by a network cable. The odd thing is the N800 dosent show up as an attached device but I can browse the net over the connection and can see shared files on the pc ( sometimes and it takes forever to find them - the directories are populated in slo-mo). I left my treo in my pocket and carried my n800 about today left it on and gvm minimised and used it regularly during day running a couple of skyscape references and it went fine- battery still showing 6 hours when I got home ( I did turn bluetooth/wifi off). Very pleased.

I am connecting via a wireless router .

Well, update here. I got hot sync to work! In GVM Hotsync setup I used the IP address found in Palm Desktop- Hotsync tab-setup-Network tab-TCP/IP settings-Primary PC IP address. I have my Windows firewall disabled but I will reactivate that and make the exception for the Desktop although I bet this could be tricky and would need to be done properly. Any advise there would be appreciated. In Palm Desktop I have Network mode activated. The important thing to note here is that Hotsync using the above settings does not work for me directly from Lap Top to Nokia N800 with the Nokia disconnected from my wireless router. It works perfectly if both my Lap Top XP computer and Nokia N800 are connected to my wireless router. The first successful sync required input in a dialogue box that popped up in Palm Desktop. I guess this was like initial permission to complete the task. I have not done anything to set up the wireless router or connections there. It's just the normal wireless connections from each devise to the router.

Did your calendar sync too?

Sorry to say that the Calendar didn't sync. But I have Calendar Sync between Google mail and GPE Calendar using ERMINIG.

Has anyone been able to sync without going over a network router? Such as, syncing over Bluetooth or through a wired connection?

I can't get hotsync to work over my network connection.

On the N800, I filled in Hostname & pressed "Start HotSync" button. Nokia responds "Launching sync thread". But nothing happens after that. After a minute, Nokia says "Failed (Cant connect)". My PC is running Windows XP & has the Palm hotsync software.

Do I need more software on my PC? Such as a ACCESS/Nokia version?

duh. The pc-side software has a checkbox that must be seet for network connection. Once you do that, it works!! (as if by magic :D)
