Hello !

All my friends are using MSN or Skype as primary IM. No problem for chat with them using the n810.

The camera is, for me, totally useless because I don't want to explain to my friends how to install a sip client, create a new account, etc just for chatting with me !

I just wanna know how do you use your camera.

That's a good point, apart from taking pictures of myself I'm a little confused as to the point of the 'Camera'. Mine seems to have a rather bright, orange display! the 'settings' feature is pretty good when I click on it it says "Camera" Doh!

You could install the 'camera' package and then use it like a ....camera.

You could install the 'camera' package and then use it like a ....camera. I have done but mine must be broken I cant find the view finder on the back ;)

So apart from taking tasteful 'Art' images of myself its a bit stupid really, oh hang on I suppose if my mirror breaks I could use it when brushing my hair ah but then again I'm a slap head :D

Doesn't the AMSN client support webcam on the N8x0?

It's too bad Nokia didn't decide to make some extra money by providing a way to substitute a decent camera for the one they ship, at a premium price, of course.

You can use it with Gizmo currently for tablet-to-tablet or tablet-to-pc video calling. It will also work with Gtalk for tablet-to-tablet video calling, and as soon as Skype updates their software, should work with Skype for video calling, as well.

The camera is the most useless POS I've seen.
Poor color balance.
Low resolution.
Fixed to your left side.
Makes the GPS look good.
I'd rather have had the FM radio.

I agree 100%. The camera included is ****, no doubt about that. I want at least a 3MP. Come on Nokia!!!

@gemnii42, if you're planning to use your tablet with a BT headset (for internet calling), don't install the FM Radio. the FM Radio seems to break the BT headset recognition, and that's been documented in a couple of threads here.

What is the MP rating on the camera? It has to be in the 0.1MP range because the quality is horrible. I had a very good (for its time) on a 5-6 year old Sony Clie PDA. The thing is smaller than the N810 and has a 3.2MP swiveling camera. Honoestly I'd rather have the Dpad of the N810 on the face instead of a camera of the current quality.

VGA, which I believe is .3 megapixels. I agree wholeheartedly that it should be of higher quality. It's not like Nokia's a stranger to quality cameras, look at the N73 and N95. Also, for design, I would MUCH have preferred that the camera pop up out of the top of the device, that would likely be the optimal location.

Yes it would be great, and I think that linux Skype 2 beta which supports video (very beta) is a good pointer of what we will get on our tablet, nevertheless, it can takes a loooong time before skype announce something for us ...

Yes, it's around 0.3 MP, and all of Nokia's (and Sony Ericsson's, and Motorola's) phones with video calling capabilities have a VGA user-facing camera, and it works pretty decently, so let's not be so quick to blame the camera.

There is no point to having a 1.3 or 3.2MP camera for video calls because the amount of bandwidth that would be needed to stream over a mobile data connection (using lowest common denominator / weakest link here) would be unfeasible.

Most webcams are VGA or 1.3MP at best (with the exception of Apple's iSight), and Nokia has made it clear that the web cam is just that -- a web cam, not meant for taking great photos.

EDIT:

This pretty much confirms that the iSight is able to get away with so much for several reasons (see highlighted), plus the fact that the software supports up to 30fps. I seriously doubt that the N800 has the video capabilities for recording at that framerate

"But iSight doesn’t just look good, it makes you look good, with the highest quality video of any chatting solution. A custom-designed, three-part lens consists of two aspherical elements that focus on a 1/4-inch CCD sensor with 640x480 (VGA) resolution. The camera’s lens aperture is a wide F/2.8, allowing it to collect more light than most webcams. iSight also offers a far wider range of shutter speeds than most other cameras. Put it all together and iSight delivers smooth, top-quality, full-motion video at 30 frames-per-second in 24-bit colour. "

I know its an old topic but the title still applies. I can not believe that skype has yet to release a video functioning version for the nokia tablets yet. If this bothers you at all will you please post a comment at the following thread. I am hoping that we can get a big turn out and maybe someone over there will see a need to fix the missing and main feature of skype on the nokias. Thanks for taking the time to read and if you reply I appreciate that as well :) Hopefully I can video thank you skype style in the near future .

This is what I want to do with the N810 camera:

N810 Video to Image for Hike (http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=30387)

I'm just trying to figure out how to get there from here... 'cause I really don't need more pictures of my nose. Well, actually, that idea of using the N810's camera as a mirror isn't too bad ;)

Year ago, I was thinking about creating some sort of clip-on mirror system (periscope), that would allow to photo, holding device normally.
Few months ago, crawling around net, I saw, that there are something like that for iphone (http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2010/06/self-portrait-add-on-for-iphone-is-all-done-with-mirrors/), but as it has forward facing camera, it is used to make self-portraits. I am bad at optics, but I am good ar crafting anything with hands ;)
I just need some thin mirrors and periscope will be ready.
Only thing I dont like, is soooo crapppy camera application. I wonder why noone is upgrading it... :(
