Folks that are having trouble with music playing. To get logs from atabake (our media engine) and canola, follow these steps. Close Canola, open a terminal and use the following commands:
$ atabake stop
$ atabake start --logfile=/home/user/MyDocs/atabake_log.txt -vvv
$ canola -vvv
And try to play the problematic songs. If the problem still occurs, please post the contents of atabake_log.txt and the output in terminal after running Canola. These will help us to find out what's happening.

No crashing here on my N810, works great so far.

Does the latest update support real audio streams? I thought RAM files were now supported - does this also include *.ra and *.rm files, I tried setting up some rtsp:// addresses in the internet radio but it gives me the error "No feed available for this URL" - is streaming real audio not yet supported?

Okay, I did that, here is the terminal output, or at least what I could get, there was so much that I couldn't see the beginning of it, and piping it to less doesn't work, b/c apparently there is no less on the IT.

absolofdoom, it helped a lot, thanks :-)
It seems that you have an old dependency. Could you check the version of your python2.5-efl-utils package, and try to upgrade it to the latest version?

Looks and works great so far. The multiple albums is fixed and appears to be working great, I love the interface on the multiple album entries screen, really looks great and works well.
Issues:
Only issue I have encountered so far is that when I am listening to a track it stops playing when I am in the configuration adding new internet radio stations.
Some other possible enhancements:
1) An equalizer to change, customize frequency during playback (maybe even a graphic display or visualization too)
2) Playlist management - someone else said the ability to queue tracks up or at least add them to the currently playing list. Being able to create and modify your own playlists would also be good.
3) Internet Streaming radio (.ra and .rm files) for services like the BBC radio which is already setup within the built in media player
4) Support album cover art which has been built into mp3 files - I purchased an mp4 file from playpal.fm the other day and the cover art was integrated into the mp3 file.
5) Canola can get sluggish when working with podcasts (when switching to and updating) and take some time for the screen to refresh although the downloader now works perfectly - I was able to download podcasts without any errors
6) Podcast configuration, it would be great to be able to configure where podcasts are saved to
7) Podcast auto refreshing, a refresh all or an option to configure canola to refresh all available podcasts (or subset) on a preset schedule would be great.
8) Media directory for podcasts and internet radio i.e. shoutcast.com which allows you to "tune" into 1000's of internet radio stations. This may be something that would be better fitted to a website rather than being built into canola itself - a custom subscription info (xml?) file could be downloaded from the web and read into canola after the user selects everything they want to subscribe to (for example a site like www.gronmayer.com/it for music instead of IT repositories)
9) Youtube integration - ability to view videos from youtube
Everything so far looks great, the fixes to the media configuration screens are great. Once you click enter it goes and acquires the name directly, no more multiple clicks. I can edit the names on the stations and they are saved!! It all looks great.
All in all it was well worth the wait for this release, heres looking forward to much more improvement and enhancements.
Thanks.

@Benz : Can you send us the log? What device, version of software are you using?
@dbuur : What firmware are you using? HE or Gregale? can you run in verbose? send us something? It does takes a little more on the 770 than the usual, but I can assure you we tested a lot if several devices, several times... etc.
Of course there's a lot (infinite cases actually) when users have several applciations installed that could have messed with some dependency : /
But send us more info we will try to track it down.

I'm having an issue of Podcasts, I can add the feeds (have tried several different audio and video casts) it updates and then when I go to DL the individual casts it doesn't down load, it goes directly to now playing (opens the player) and nothing further happens. Is there a way to give you a error report by going through Xterm or something ?

"Looks and works great so far. The multiple albums is fixed and appears to be working great, I love the interface on the multiple album entries screen, really looks great and works well."
Thanks for the kind words, for sure is the fuel for the team =)
"
Issues:
Only issue I have encountered so far is that when I am listening to a track it stops playing when I am in the configuration adding new internet radio stations.
"
Yes, we are aware of that it's in our "Known issues" on the website.. and there's the technical explanation that once you writing in the canola database you must be shure nothing is being used at the time..thus things get closed when saving stations. We will study this for the future releases.
"
Some other possible enhancements:
1) An equalizer to change, customize frequency during playback (maybe even a graphic display or visualization too)
"
This is a quite nice idea, I think you were the one that first suggested it for us. We want to do it, but it's really down in the priority on our queue : /
"
2) Playlist management - someone else said the ability to queue tracks up or at least add them to the currently playing list. Being able to create and modify your own playlists would also be good.
"
This is important, and it's coming the time to be implemented. I was the one afraid of doing that wrong and messing up with the whole ui design, but I think we will come with a simple and nice design for that.
"
3) Internet Streaming radio (.ra and .rm files) for services like the BBC radio which is already setup within the built in media player
"
Funny thing, kenneth told me that this was working, I actually tested with some radio live5 files... we will investigate. It was supposed to be working, but I think you cannot place the .ra or etc directly you need to put the resource for it.
"
4) Support album cover art which has been built into mp3 files - I purchased an mp4 file from playpal.fm the other day and the cover art was integrated into the mp3 file.
"
It's already on the canola tuning 2.3, but we are having problems to make the package for it. It gets covers embededd on the files, on the folders and from the internet.
"
5) Canola can get sluggish when working with podcasts (when switching to and updating) and take some time for the screen to refresh although the downloader now works perfectly - I was able to download podcasts without any errors
"
Yes, this is also on the known issues. And this is quite clear : The device reach it's limits. Downloading consume a lots of resources, and when animations happens in canola we really go heavy on cpu, so ... there's no magic to be done here :/
But : we are going to implement a nice queue system for downloads, so only one is downloaded at time (user can increase up to the max of 3 - as we left this release) and this will help make sure the downloadings are not fighting for resources.
"
6) Podcast configuration, it would be great to be able to configure where podcasts are saved to
"
Yes, this is on the Queue for the next update =)
"
7) Podcast auto refreshing, a refresh all or an option to configure canola to refresh all available podcasts (or subset) on a preset schedule would be great.
"
Yes, this also.. =) And: auto download, a place to see all downloads, a system icon indicating downloads are happening.
Well a lot of things to make it a nice and usable podcast application. and we will get there in the next 2 releases!
"
8) Media directory for podcasts and internet radio i.e. shoutcast.com which allows you to "tune" into 1000's of internet radio stations. This may be something that would be better fitted to a website rather than being built into canola itself - a custom subscription info (xml?) file could be downloaded from the web and read into canola after the user selects everything they want to subscribe to (for example a site like www.gronmayer.com/it for music instead of IT repositories)
"
Yes, I think a "directory" with some custom .pls or even rss file generated at the end are the best. We thought of pre setting some but I think we can come up with something and let the users build the resource web site.
"
9) Youtube integration - ability to view videos from youtube
"
It;s almost ready. : It shows featured, most viewed, you can do search, bookmark, history etc. But for now we are just streaming. Streaming and dowloading it's a little bit more complicated (because of the download issues etc)
---
"Everything so far looks great, the fixes to the media configuration screens are great. Once you click enter it goes and acquires the name directly, no more multiple clicks. I can edit the names on the stations and they are saved!! It all looks great.

Nice!

Unm, so you click the download button. It opens the progress bar and nothing happens? It was supposed to open the progress bar... and after a while you could click the item.
you can try starting canola in the xterm with verbose ( add -vvvvv) but I think this one would be better in other way ( I will forward to kenneth - resposible for the podcast)

BEnz: yes. This can help us figure out what's happening so we can help you.
I went to try to install again before I got the log and it worked, something changed though as the version I was trying to install 30 mins or so ago was 1.6MB and the one that worked when I installed it was 1.4MB. Then I tried launching Canola but nothing came up, I remembered I needed to restart my N810, which of course I couldn't get it to power back on for 15 mins...
I just tried to launch Canola but the same thing happened which I thought was happening because I hadn't restarted yet. When I launch Canola the small box says "Canola - Loading" then it goes away and Canola never opens. Would you suggest completely uninstalling and reinstalling Canola?

Hmm I think I still need to delete the database
The good news is the pictures works now. :D
The bad news is, I think the database is still stuck with the old information. Such as album covers (anyway to not have it scan my album covers and have them in the pictures area?) the old pictures directory and my music directory.
I believe this occured when I had the two SD cards swapped when I first ran Canola, but I later switched the two around (so all the media is now on my external card).
Edit: Deleting the database, removed the old information. However my music does not play. The seekbar in addition just reports 00:00.

So I uninstalled Canola, then reinstalled it, same issue with the loading poping up but Canola not ever launching. So then I decided to uninstall Canola, restart the tablet, then reinstall Canola and restart again, however now I'm receiving the "Unable to install Canola2" error from the application menu again.

The only two problems that I have encountered so far:
- changing the volume with the hardware buttons while playing a video causes it to drop frames. The sound seems to stay in sync though.
- When playing an entire album (and presumably a playlist), both skip to next track and skip to previous track soft-buttons cause Canola2 to skip to the next track (using graphite theme just in case this is relevant)
Other than those small issues, it looks and performs great!
Thanks.

1. Thanks for implementing .png display support--BUT, png's don't seem to have thumbnails generated in the zoomed-out browse view.
2. Same problem as others with playing music--no sound.
3. Video...on starting a second video, volume ignores slider volume control and starts at full volume. Similar problem with the dropped video frames during volume changes. One feature that went away...in paused video, moving the bottom scrubber bar no longer shows current position video frame. Consider adding a frame-advance button for fine positioning?
Other than these things, look and feel seems a lot "tighter" - KUTGW!

I have a problem installing Canola2 on the n770 with 2007HE
I followed the steps outlined on your website, click the Canola2 download link, click 'open'. The file is downloaded and application manager opens up, but when I 'ok' the install I get this error :
Conflict with application packages : downloadmanager0-server
Any suggestions?

@Benz, Laughing man... Etc:
Music not playing : We think "atabake" our media engine is acting strange.. or something was not "updated" in the update. if you guys can try to do a full removal (like using apt-get on command line) like
apt-get -f install
And after that do a real reboot (no power cable one) ... does it still not playing sounds?
Music and Podcasts: those are the sensible ones in this updates because we changed a lot the music player and the download manager. Sorry for the trouble but it was the only way to "hit" the bugs.
We are trying to see how to make sure everyone has the right dependencies on place (this should be guaranteed by the application manager).
@benz : the unnable to install canola probably has a message in the log.. can you send us ?
@rdcinhou : I will check the png issues... I remember there was a real serious bug with the thumbnailer and pngs, maybe that was what left thumbnails out...
@mwiktowy : interesting this sounds like a "regular" bug that we must have introduced with the player. Can you open a bug on garage?
@Denvar : we are updating the download maanger... if you could kill it from the terminal before installing.. would it help ? I will also push the message to the guys to see how it goes.
Guys, I would like to ask a small thing :
When telling us the problem you're facing, send us always the basic info as you're doing now and also :
1) if happenend in application installer : send us the log messages. Log is located in the menu of the application installer
2) if happened on canola: try rebooting, and running it from xterm with -vv as argument. And sending us also (can be just the final part... not everything, or where you see something like "Error" "Bug"
3) tell us what kind of repositories do you have, did you have canola2 already installed etc.
Thanks! We will try to fix those things asap, seems that the music part is critical but is happening to half of people.. not to other half... We are trying to figure out Why?

Hi Amm3140 :
Before trying to re-install, do yoi know how to kill the download manager?
try typing on the xterm :
ps ( it will help you find out the pid for the downloadmanager )
kill -9 pid (the pid that you just found out)
Let me know if it helps

ThanksI had exactly same issue with my Nokia 770 where I had already had Canola 1 and attempted to install Canola 2 beta 1 in past. I am currently in process of a complete OS2006 re-install, not suggesting you do this but will tell you how I get on.
---edit---
Reinstalled OS2006, then the hotfix for the potential Wi-Fi/mmc corruption issue i.e. http://www.internettablettalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=11824
Then installed Canola 2 beta for Gregale OS2006 from Canola Website and now Canola is running just fine on OS2006 :)
(I ensured that the memory swap file was enabled via control panel, "max 56Mb" as I believe this will help Canola)
Thank you to all the Canola team for working hard to get a running version of Canola 2 beta for OS2006!! :D:D Looks good on Nokia 770!!

Same issue here - I ununstalled Calona 2 on my N810 and tried reinstalling Calona2 beta version but application manager complains
"Unable to install. Software comtains updates to packages from a different source and is likely to harm the system. Contact the author."
This happens even after restart. To note, initially I had installed Calola from another 3rd part repo (when maemo was down).
Another pointer is, I am getting this same error also when updating pwsafe (but not with all apps).
Any pointers or help ?

Hi, unfortunately application manager on OS2007 canīt deal with conflicting packages. You must uninstall downloadmanager0-server and libdownloadmanager0 manually via xterm (as root) wuth:
# apt-get remove downloadmanager0-server libdownloadmanager0
You can also remove these packages using red pill mode in application manager.
After removing, you should be able to install Canola2 without problems.

Hi dcroennau: the built in (or embbeded) album art are "used" first by Canola tuning, that creates the link between it and the music library (actually not a link, but prepares, the size etc and save them to make the use faster).
But we are having problems on providing the instalation for the 2.4. If you now how to install things by apt-get you can try to install it from the garage website.
Please, take a look in the website in the "Tips and tricks: Album cover art" section.
http://openbossa.indt.org.br/canola/using.html#cover
This is one of the features we plan to integrate. We just need to makesure it goes smoothly (a wizard in the first usage or something)

Hi dcroennau,
The last version of canola-tuning (0.2.4) checks for embedded covers, and checks for cover art candidates in the album directory. Unfortunately the version 0.2.4 cannot be installed using one-click-install approach, the way to install is using XTerm or SSH as root:
dpkg -i canola-tuning-0.2.4.deb
We are working to upload the canola-tuning to Maemo Extras Repository and make it available to be installed using Application Manager.

I got the same "Unable to Install Canola2" error this morning but it dissapeared from the installable applications list and appears as though it did install.
After a "real" restart without the power plugged in, I tried starting it again but I have the same "Loading Canola2" message then nothing happens.
You mentioned something about doing a "full removal" I think, with the command line? Pardon me for my noobness but I'm really not experienced with the X Terminal (I think thats what I need to use right?) how do I go about doing this?

Hi Benz,
Sorry for the trouble, it seems that you (and some others) were really unluck with the update, and we would just love to find out what causes this to solve it. IT seems that a combination of things causes those problems. If you don't bother.. send to us what repositories you have installed.
About the removal, pablop posted in the ITT the list of packages you should remove,
but you can try (as root, so you need to either connect to SSH or become root on the device - tutoriais available on the maemo website)
and do a
apt-get -f remove canola2
and after that.. remove the following packages :

Just wanted to reiterate my appreciation for the awesome job you guys are doing on Canola2. Since that application came out, it's been 90% of the time what I use my ITT for.
Can't wait to see upcoming updates that will add features. A few things I'd like to eventually see added :
1) Use the button on the wire headset that came with the ITT as a pause button
2) Add internet streaming TV channels under video (can do that with OS media player already)
3) As suggested earlier, a directory of online radio/TV stations would be cool
4) Integrate the Album Covers and Video Thumbnails wizards inside Canola
5) Zoom/scroll and automatic rotation of pictures
... and a gazillion more I can't think of but I'm sure other people will come up with :)

Not sure if you need administrator priviliges. If so you'd first have to become root. But all you need to type in is "apt-get remove nameofprogram" without quotes. Though in this case use "apt-get -f remove nameofprogram". F being for full install or uninstall. To install it's "apt-get -f install nameofprogram".

Try installing ssh client and server. That'll allow you to ssh root@localhost (after setting up your own password). I don't think there's any other easy way to get root access without gainroot or putting it in red pill mode.
And where did you get Pidgin N800 LED Plugin @ maemo.jabber.dk? It looks interesting.
Edit: Found the Pidgin thing thru google.

Good news all around I see :)
As for the cover downloading, wouldn't have that taken care of as an "obvious" plug-in that needs to be added in Canola by the end-user shield you legally ?

I get the "unable to install" message on my N810 (OS2008). After that it says it is installed, but when I run it, nothing happens. I would like to know what needs to be done to get it to install and work. At this point I don't have a working canola on my system.

6) Ability to add bookmarks to audio/video files being played, which would allow a future resume to last point
I use my ITT at work a lot but I'm constantly interrupted (how dare they ? :) ), sometimes for long period of times so I shut it down, but then if I don't remember where I left off, it takes me a few minutes to go back to that part...
I get "unable to install" doing either the upgrade for full install of beta2 on my N810 (OS2008). Canola is installed after the error but it doesn't run.

absolofdoom, it helped a lot, thanks :-)
It seems that you have an old dependency. Could you check the version of your python2.5-efl-utils package, and try to upgrade it to the latest version?
I checked the application manager, but I can't find anything that says python2.5-efl-utils in my installed packages, maybe it isn't installed?

Hi this is a issue that is happening since the release yesterday, please refer back in the thread for more info.
But what's happening looks like dependencies problems that can be caused by several reasons, (specially repositories that don't work well together)
so, the tip is : fully unninstall (not by the application manager) reboot and to a install using the terminal.. not the application manager.
It has worked for others in the thread.
So :
Remove canola (logged as root )
apt-get -f remove canola2
then remove all the other dependencies:
apt-get --purge --force-yes -y remove libevas0 libecore0 libeet0 libembryo0 libdownloadmanager0
reboot and try again.

Hi Giole,
It seems so.. the old dependencies (possibility caused by repositories conflicts etc)
So you can look back in the thread that's a possible way to solving it as showed by some users.

Aha, I followed your instructions (I left off the --force-yes and -y because I want to be able to say yes or no myself) and it worked!
It also noted that i needed to upgrade python2.5-efl-utils, and this is the only way it detected that it needed to be done so that's probably the issue I was having.
Thanks, off to play now :)

I'm also happy, but now the dreadful question:
What made this happen ? can you guys tell me :
1) did you install using the official repo (the first beta) or that community repository?
2) What kind of repositories did you had when trying to install ?
3) Did you tested any of Gustavo's Evas demo (that iphone keyboard, the kinetic list demo) ?
We need to figure out a way of not letting this happen ; /

I used the first beta. Then I upgraded from the application manager. Later tried removing it and installing it from the command line. Removed it and tried installing it from the official website again. And finally tried those instructions (when I tried removing them it did say I didn't have libdownloadmanager0 installed though oddly).
I have (btw anyway to quickly output all repos next time?)

Well I'm about to throw mine against a wall here,. Have been trying for nearly 24hrs to get the new Canola to work with no luck yet. Will not play any audio and won't DL podcasts. I've tried to gain root etc. with no luck either, have tried dropbear client, and open ssh client and followed all the directions to gain root and when I try to delete/remove any of the files listed it says it can't find them, yet I can go between Red/Blue pill mode and delete them that way. (I hope) But this lib can't be uninstalled until you uninstall these other files etc.
I really do appreciate all the hard work the entire Canola team have done for this release but this is the exact reason why Linux will never be anything more then a tinkers' toy, Nokia has had this hardware and software for what nearly 4 years now and have no market share, Apple has been at it less then a year and has taken over the entire market, go figure. People just want ease of use. :(

haven't spent much time with it yet but wanted to post first impressions. download and install was perfect, no hitches and it was fast and simple.
i went straight to the podcasts menu as this is my main use for canola. i checked the settings and some of my old feeds were still there. but there was no menu to play podcasts. i had to add a new podcast feed and restart canola before the menu would show up.
i couldn't see any improvements in the podcast page. my hope was that it would be possible to stream podcast episodes without first downloading, but i couldn't see how this was possible.
internet radio: i was able to add a BBC real audio stream and it played fine! there were some issues however, the player didn't recognise the name of the station and then when selecting a station it would give me a further extra page where i was required to choose a stream! this step is a bit of a pain, in the standard media player you just choose the station and the player does the rest.
anyway, thanks for a nice program. although the new features are welcome they may need a bit more polishing before they are really useful,

i'm trying to uninstall beata2 from application manager (how i installed it) and it says "unable to uninstall. some application packages are needed by other applications"
hitting details says libecore0-evas (0.9.9.041-maemo.7) and libedje0 (0.5.0.042-maemo1)
why is this?
if the app packages are needed by other apps surely they were there already? or are they part of the canola insall? if so what other apps now need them?
can you give me details on how to uninstall?
cheers!

Hi, let's go over the topics...
"haven't spent much time with it yet but wanted to post first impressions. download and install was perfect, no hitches and it was fast and simple."
That's nice.. unfortunately for those with lots of repositories, demos and things we have still compatibility issues...
"i went straight to the podcasts menu as this is my main use for canola. i checked the settings and some of my old feeds were still there. but there was no menu to play podcasts. i had to add a new podcast feed and restart canola before the menu would show up."
Hehehe, people just don't read the instructions =) Apart from the joke, there's on the website.. there's here.. everywhere : "Please reboot".
The podcast is completely dependent on the download manager thus you need to reboot to kill it and the other version (update) can come up.
Also canola2 beta2 updated atabake (the media engine) and we need to kill it as well so the new one takes place.
"i couldn't see any improvements in the podcast page. my hope was that it would be possible to stream podcast episodes without first downloading, but i couldn't see how this was possible."
Well, as said, this was a "Bug fix" not a feature update. But, I can assure you things are much more reliable now. If you click on the download icon... wait a little bit and touch the episode. It does streams play what you're downloading... I only use like this...
If still not working, please send me the feed... but I highly doubt the feed has any problem... strange, but the way it's supposed to work is that you can start streaming at any time (you just need to give a small time for buffer)
"internet radio: i was able to add a BBC real audio stream and it played fine! there were some issues however, the player didn't recognise the name of the station and then when selecting a station it would give me a further extra page where i was required to choose a stream! this step is a bit of a pain, in the standard media player you just choose the station and the player does the rest. "
Yes, this we are aware.. and it's been working for the next update. We focused on add the support to streams and didn't have time to fix this.
"anyway, thanks for a nice program. although the new features are welcome they may need a bit more polishing before they are really useful,"
yes, we will get there.. still have 2 releases =)
BR
FlareUP : take a look at the other threads, theres at least 2 or 3 with tips on how to solve this. The application manager of people with different repositories can get crazy when updating.. and thus you need to do so manual tweakings.. but it's possible to fix.
http://www.internettablettalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=16075
Sorry if this is a lot of trouble, but we really have little to do in such different scenarios where users can have repositories from anywhere.. installing versions of things that breaks other things.. While I do think we can help a little bit.. it will be impossible to trust the application installer / user behaviors.. until we decided to ship with every single dependency (even worst)

Handful, I'd do that in a heartbeat if I could, but I can't figure out how to get to become root, I've tried all sorts of ways so either I'm just not doing something right or I've messed something up in Xterm to where I can't become root anymore, I just don't know at this point. And I tried to remove those files within the app mgr between red/blue pill mode but for everyone of those files I need to delete it's telling me it has dependancies so in order to delete that 1 file I have to find and uninstall 10 other files.

TTwings:
I really do appreciate all the hard work the entire Canola team have done for this release but this is the exact reason why Linux will never be anything more then a tinkers' toy, Nokia has had this hardware and software for what nearly 4 years now and have no market share, Apple has been at it less then a year and has taken over the entire market, go figure. People just want ease of use.
Well, now you know somethings about apple :
1) you know why they flash your device in everyupdate =) to not pass throught this..
2) you also know now.. why the iphone re-scale the photos to crap resolutions .. so it can load faster, maintain thumbnails and zoom even faster and nicely.
3) don't give any user freedom, people don't know where the ipod touch / iphone stores music. No, why?
4) don't give any dev freedom : imagine the devs messing around (now they will release a sdk, it will be nice to see if they will repeat the macos strategy)
So, It's painful to compare to apple, because they avoid problems by reducing freedom.. for me as "interaction designer" that would be a dream, because most of the problems are gone.
"Media libraries goes on mmc2. You don't have? it? Sorry cannot install canola..."
"photos only can be in the 'Photos' folder, why let people choose it?"
"Music? you don't even copy, my appplication copies"
And so on.. while this give a lot of simplicity for the system... and maybe it's incredible good for the apple customers (I use some of their products) It would never work the same on the IT.
People accept the lack of freedom, because theres a incredible nice industrial design, a simple but working integration.. a great hardware that gives you power to do a incredible and nice looking UI... then people "exchange" ok.. I don't have freedom but I do have this bling bling...
Impossible for nokia to mimic that in the current state : /

Not to mention how much money was thrown at the iPod/iTouch. How much did we all pay for Canola? We will all accept that you are just upset. I screw up my devices every other day and can't sleep until they are all just perfect, its just the way some of us are. We are trail blazers on a budget!!!

Hi Rjoudrey :
It's really not about the price...or being free.. no. It's more about dealing with user's expectations x their own attitudes= )
For example, we did a lot of hard work, tested like crazy everything.. even a version for the very buggy HE we made.. and then things just don't install correctly for a lot of users, because there are outside variables that we can't control...
In the end, the sad part is that most of the time.. it becomes "Canola sucks because it can't even install correctly", and most of the time.. was another crappy repository set up.. or a simple application made by a novice programmer that overrides some library etc.. but the fault always comes to our side.. =)
Not *****ing ... but sometimes I wish to be apple and just tell users "Flash it"
=) but we are not.. then we suffer ehehehe
But anyways.. that's life! =)

On my N810 (never had any version of Canola installed previously):
I had similar problems to dwf and benz. Unable to install message... Then finally installed (well, I should say the install failed again but the icon was installed and Canola2 showed up as installed but it wouldn't run.) Also at this point, I was unable to uninstall with App manager since it said Canola2 was a dependancy of some lib-type file...) I had no idea how to clean this up. (sorry I didn't look in App manager log file, bad me)
I thought this was caused by some files not being available or either some mis-match of files or..?
I had created a full backup earlier in the day, so I re-flashed to a clean OS2008. Installed Canola2 first, before any backup restore or any other apps, and all went well. Then I went and restored my backup and it installed all old apps and my settings correctly :)
- All is now working fine (apart from album covers because of python dependency issue... But I can wait for you guys to fix it)
On my N800 (had existing Canola2 beta on it, and latest OS2008):
Very clean upgrade.
Saw reboot message in forum, and so I rebooted and Canola2 is working great.
(also same cover art issue but can wait)
Looking good guys. thanks!
I hope you solve the "unable to install" problem. sorry I didn't look in my app manager log.
Thanks for adding wma support :)
One problem I see is that the sound level always resets between songs for wma. (it seems fine for mp3 but not confirmed this). If I turn the volume down low with the vertical slider in C2 then it plays quietly. If I go to next track then the sound level goes high again but the onscreen slider is still at bottom. Pressing the slider again adjusts the volume.
How do I install canola using the terminal? Do I simply do an apt-get install canola2?
I did that and it complains about two libraries, one from skype and skype-2.5-dispatcher.
OK. I did what it requested (apt-get -f install) and then did the apt-get install canola2 and it now seems to work! I'm not sure I see the differences from the earlier version yet.

One Simple :) thing
Did the "D' pad controls for video change ? It seems to me that in a previous version the right and left allowed for moving forward and moving back from within the file being viewed, now they are moving to the next file or the previous file, that leaves only the slide bar as an option for FF and rewind, it is much harder to control that way.
I did see the media library refresh feature and the merge albums. I can't tell where it gets the albums from. It seemed to merge some tracks but not others. I couldn't tell why it did what it did.

Well with a fresh reflash I finally got Canola to work, sorta. I got it to display the album arts and vid art, but for some reason it's not picking up or showing all the music I have, it shows the album then just a few songs but not the entire albums (all the songs), very weird, and I'm not about to reflash again, arg.
At least now it plays music and actually will download podcasts at least, haven't tried a vidcast yet, I'm in fear at this point.

Yeah, it's a bugfix release, not feature release and features are coming.
Video playback froze? We have been listen for a couple of other users this, and there's a reboot warning (you need the engine to be replaced) so it could be that you had the old engine working, because the player of the video itself is either mplayer or the default media player.
But no worries at all, because maemo gives everyone choices, and they are in better shape then us at the moment that we are beta
1) default media player
2) ukmp (from konttori - it has the downloads, cover, and uses mplayer for playback )
3) kagu
4) mediabox
(what I really like is that they are all python like us ! )
We just can't let the platform lost users because of this =) =)
BR
@eaaronp : do you have mplayer? Mplayr takes care of the control.. so we cannot do much for now (we are investigating ways of improving our relationship with it)
but :
on video < and > should be SEEK not next and prev. Something is bugged.. we will fix it!

When I play the included Discovery video the video opens in small dimensions in the top left corner of the screen, not in the black square in the centre of the screen

I have to sit and wait several minutes when opening picture/video/song list (each has 2 or 3 items only) and for example if i look at my images i have to click the next image, wait 5 mins, see image, click next, wait 5 mins etc.
The initial loading (after canola opens) also takes a logn time

Marcelo,
Thanks to you and the Canola team for this release. I look forward to the day when it is feature complete, but it seems that there is enough working to make it a viable media app.
I have had a couple of issues:
When I had Canola-Tuning pull album covers it put the same cover on all of the Podcasts I had saved in my Music folder (the cover for LUGRadio, which if you are going to pick a Podcast picture to use is a good podcast, but not what the Podcasts actually were.)
I got this error:
IO error (errno 21): Is a directory
trying to download this podcast: http://feeds.waywordradio.org/awwwpodcast
but had success with all of the other podcasts I tried.
I have one album that I ripped with soundjuicer, that is not showing up in Canola. It is an mp3, and the info shows up on my desktop. Not sure why I can't see it in Canola. All of my other music seems to appear.
And I have a few questions/feature requests:
-How do I tell if there are new podcasts to download without going to each podcast and checking?
-Can I mark a podcast as viewed/listened to, so when a new podcast shows up I know to go download it? (all of the podcast feeds I've added are showing episodes I've already downloaded with the feedreader, and I don't want to download them again)
-I would like to be able to create a playlist from my downloaded podcasts so that I can put a list together before I start driving. I have an hour long commute, and it is tough if a podcast ends to have to navigate to another one to start it playing (and dangerous).
-I also think it would be nice to have a list of all downloaded podcasts, so that I don't have to navigate to each podcast to see which I haven't seen/listened to, but have been downloaded.
Thanks again for the great work,
Hal

A few issues in the new beta
The first is the most major one, I think its on the tracker, but I wanted to reiterate it because of how important it is: when playing an album, the volume doesn't stick from track to track. When Canola moves to the next track, it puts it at full volume, and the only way to go back to the previous volume is to touch the slider. This is a HUGE issue for the many of us using headphones, I don't want to lose my hearing because my media player keeps increasing the volume all the time. :D
Secondly. I said this on another thread, but the cover art view doesn't work very well. Sure it looks very nice, but its very counterintuitive. Instead of going all the way from the left to the right, and then back to the left to go in alphabetical order, it should go up-down, then left to right. I know this is the opposite of how one would read, but it makes absolutely no sense to do all that scrolling from one side of the list to the other, and then have to go all the way back to the left to continue alphabetically.
Finally, the one internet radio station I actually use isn't working with Canola. The link is http://www.nj.com/ram/wsou/wsou.rpm but this is just a text file that links to the actual stream. The rpm doesn't work in the Maemo media player at all, but the actual stream does work. The stream that should work is rtsp://helix.nj.com/broadcast/njo/maggot/one.rm . However, Canola tells me that it can't find a feed for this stream.
All in all, great work though. Hopefully an FM tuner plugin will come soon :D

Marcelo,
Thanks to you and the Canola team for this release. I look forward to the day when it is feature complete, but it seems that there is enough working to make it a viable media app.
Thanks we are quite aware that important things are missing, but we need the continuos contribution like yours to make sure we are in the right path.
Yes, I agree with you. For this I propose 2 things:
1) avoid your podcast to be scanned (but of course you may say you don't want to do that...) and then in next versions will you will be able to download a picture and pick from file to "apply" to a podcast....
2) maybe we can add to the edit form a "Apply image to this podcast" then you can also choose the best image for the task, but this actually is not that different from the first solution
I got this error:
IO error (errno 21): Is a directory
trying to download this podcast: http://feeds.waywordradio.org/awwwpodcast
but had success with all of the other podcasts I tried.
Looks like a bug. Can you open a bug in garage? When you open there, it makes a deeper contract with us, and bugs (more then features) are better to be there.. (features here)
I have one album that I ripped with soundjuicer, that is not showing up in Canola. It is an mp3, and the info shows up on my desktop. Not sure why I can't see it in Canola. All of my other music seems to appear.
Can you send me the files? I think I can add to the test and see if our scanner is missing. But AFAIK I think the latest version ever of id3 was not supported currently... maybe we will also need to improve this.
I placed this both together because we are including this in the next update: the ability to have a download view, dynamic playlist for podcast and this "not listened" or "new" states.
Also the playlist is going to be available maybe not on this one.. but in the second update. It seems simple but we want to make sure it's not only a playlist editor.. but a component that can be used by plugins.
-I would like to be able to create a playlist from my downloaded podcasts so that I can put a list together before I start driving. I have an hour long commute, and it is tough if a podcast ends to have to navigate to another one to start it playing (and dangerous).
The last part of the comment was about that. Actually I haven't think about playlist inside the podcast but this indeed makes a lot of sense. Of course if you scan your podcast folder.. you get them on music and then you can do a playlist with our planned support.. but maybe it's even nicer to have it already there.
-I also think it would be nice to have a list of all downloaded podcasts, so that I don't have to navigate to each podcast to see which I haven't seen/listened to, but have been downloaded.
yeah, this is also on the plan (dynamic lists) for current downloading, downloaded, new, etc...
Thanks again for the great work,
Hal
We also thank you for dedicating time to send us valuable feedback.

Denvar, being very honest.. HE is by far the worst version to run canola on.. but...
We can try to make things a little bit less worst...so
1) make sure you have swap
2) install and update mplayer to it's latest more optimized version...
The application is also unusably slow.
Sorry for that. It's slow, but for what you're saying theres something else also making it slower.
But he's the point : canola uses some optimization not supported by the 770, and of course a lot of drawing routines.. and loading files (like thumbnails) takes more then it should.. but we can do magic. I have my Gregale (os2006) version.. and it works. it does have a little bit of "hicups" when playing video.. but the rest is usable. Really usable.. not like the n800 or n810 but ok.
I have to sit and wait several minutes when opening picture/video/song list (each has 2 or 3 items only) and for example if i look at my images i have to click the next image, wait 5 mins, see image, click next, wait 5 mins etc.
Yeah. this is for sure wrong.. something is really wrong :/
The initial loading (after canola opens) also takes a logn time
It should take more on the first first ime.. but after no more then 20 seconds...I know it's already a long time.. but..
So resuming: for sure you have something else going on.. but I will not lie, HE is complicated and we suffered a lot to release it. Unfortunately We are not able to improve much more... and we are at least happy the gregale works "nice". Maybe you can try updating things and see what happens, but I would say :
Avoid heavy (better resolution videos) try not downloading more then 1 podcast at once (it really eats the CPU) and if you can... go to gregale ... =)
I will try to filme my version running on the 770 so you can have a baseline and tell me how much slower your's is.

Thanks for your reply Marcelo. I did indeed read the re-boot warning and re-booted prior to trying canola.
as for the uninstall, obviously each user behaviour is different. but what i do not understand is that canola will not uninstall because it uses libecore0-evas (0.9.9.041-maemo.7) and libedje0 (0.5.0.042-maemo1) which it tells me are needed by other apps.
So did canola install new versions of these as part of it's own install or were they already present? In either case, why must I uninstall them to remove canola? and in such a case, must i re-install them for the other apps that apparently need them?
cheers

Flare:
That's the thing.. because of something unknown, that we suspect is the repositorys and some conflicts... the application manager simply doesn't let you unninstall.. and there's nobody else using those applications. It will simply not let you : /
So if you force the unninstall... you will see that no apps needs them.. and everything goes fine in the install.
It's strange I know.. and we really believed : "Ok something is wrong with our packages, let's fix it" and ALL the tests showed that theres no problems, but when combined with some non-official repositories... the app installer goes mad.
We will find out what it is... but it's always complicated.. that's why We are asking users their repository list..
Just for you to have an example: we tested with all devices, flashed with all versions in at least 4 states:
1) virgin : just flashed with the image: all devices install and unninstall just fine
2) virgin + canola 1 : unninstall canola1 and install 2 just fine...
3) virgin + canola 2 : update it just fine
4) some of "our" tablets (last version + apps etc) : updated just fine...
We are every release more worried about peoples device, and our goal is to improve it... but if there not at least traces of a bug... we will really suffer trying to find it..( ok that's our problem I know)
Sorry again for the trouble caused... Our intentions and actions are (IMHO) the best we can do... and to prove that we are here providing support for everyone with trouble.
Best Regards...

ttgowings, not sure if you have figured how to log in as root yet but it can be done as follows:
1) In application manager add the following repository:
http://eko.one.pl/maemo bora user (its a bora user but it provides the package becomeroot which is an easy way to get root access
2) Refresh the package list and install becomeroot
3) Open an xterm window and type sudo gainroot <return>
You will now have root access and should be able to run apt-get.

One issue I did see tonight was that in order for the Multiple album entries merge to work after updating my music collection on the removable storage I had to quit C2 and restart it... Basically I did the following:
1) Went into C2 and unchecked all local folders
2) Quit C2
3) Refreshed all music on my removable drive
3) Started C2 and told it to scan my removable storage for all music - it took about 5 minutes to scan everything but reported no problems
4) I checked my music within C2 to see if everything scanned correctly, when I looked at the albums I noticed multiple entries
5) I went to the multiple album entry screen and tried to merge the albums, nothing happened each time I tried
6) I closed C2 and reopened it - it took C2 approx 5 minutes to start up as it was scanning my media again...
7) Tried the multiple album entry merge again and it worked perfectly

I noticed another thing too... For the most part the multiple album entries appears to be fixed however I am still seeing quite a few of them in there even after merging using the "Multiple album entry" screen (I had to go through the process twice and even rescanned my media as well).
I also spent a lot of time making sure that the album images were embedded in all of my mp3's today and after running Canola Tuning (the latest version) I still see quite a few albums which do not have images associated with them which is a bit of a disappointment - really hoping for 99.9% population of album covers, instead have only about 55% along with quite a few duplicate album entries...
:(
Is there any way to have an option on the album covers screen to only show albums with art?

Well, I had to run Canola Tuning 3 or 4 times before it had extracted all the album art from my mp3 files. I have a 16 GB card filled with mp3 and it seems that Canola Tuning has trouble handling large libraries correctly.
Sometimes Canola Tuning just dies and once it rebooted the tablet. Try running Canola Tuning a couple of times more and see if it then manages to extract all the album art. Every time I ran Canola Tuning it managed to extract more and more artwork until it was all there.

Hi Jer,
no there's not a way of showing only albums.
Embedded album art are "simple" but sometimes problematic (you don't know anything from the file etc) thus sometimes the code can fail. We will improve it over time.. but it will continue to fail when facing odd sizes, and AFAIK we don't support quite well the latest version of ID3 tags (2.4 if I'm not mistaken)
About the 5 minutes : what size of card do you use? and... do you asked canola to "check" whole disk and all 3 medias?
It would speed up a little if you choose only the specific folder for each.
Anyways, What device are you using? Reading from memory still a little slow in the tablets, but I think this will improve!

Handful, I have a n800 and the card is a 16GB SDHC Class 6 card with approx 13GB of music on it so I was not overly bothered with the scan time - I kind of expected it. I am going to play with the album tags tonight to see if I can fix the multiple album entries which are now showing up, not sure why the multiple album fixer does not catch them as it caught and fixed others previously with no problems at all (as far as I know the album tags are all consistent and all tracks for a given album are in the same folder)... Media monkey which organizes tracks by album does not have any issues with them as they are currently tagged...
As far as the embedded images, what is the specification/size/format that canola tuning is looking for?
Also how does canola tuning come up with the album art i.e. does it try and use the embedded album art in the mp3 file, then the folder and if that does not exist does it then try to look up the album on the web? Just curious as I would like to improve its success rate with the album art as when they are populated it looks great!
Also if it looks at the folder for cover art, all of the folders had a folder.jpg file which was stored there by media monkey (media organizing app), does this also have to be a particular size - I had to use images from different sources so some were probably larger than others which may have caused problems...
Finally if all else fails and I have to populate the cover art manually within C2, where is the cover art stored, is there a particular size and format that is required (sorry if you answered this one before)?
Thank you for all the support!
Jeremy.

Sorry missed this question, I have only music on the card so far under one folder called music. There is no other media on the card, I also only configured it to look for music not pictures or videos... Like I said though I copied over 13GB's of music and there were quite a few albums - some with a large number of tracks copied over.
Could C2 have some kind of basic id3 tagging support or a possible plugin which could be used to correct tags in files if the automatic album merge did not correct issues?

Hello
I'm getting a green screen with only the time and Canola (basically, nothing is showing up in the middle of the screen). Canola loads, and sets up the components, then i just get the outside of the screen with nothing in the middle. Anyone have ideas? How do I run from xterm so I can see what's happening? I'm using N770HE version. I followed the directions from the site - I even uninstalled and installed to make sure. Is there any software that I could possibly be missing?

I wonder if Marcelo has started regretting releasing the latest beta of Canola 2 before he and his team were absolutely ready. I, for one, have been fortunate enough to avoid any sort of problem thus far, and have enjoyed improved performance from Canola 2 for it to become my choice as a PMP UI for my N800.
Keep up the good work, Marcelo and INdt team!

Hi guys =)
@ghoonk : I'm not regretted, but a little bit sad. I was writing a post to my blog that talks about that, about the fact that doesn't matter how much effort you put into it... how much careful you are.. theres just so many non-controllable variables, that demands a lot of attention that we are currently not capable.
But then.. I remind of people releasing software, with incredible processes, a lot more of care (of course the sofware are also incredible bigger) and things go wrong!
So now I'm trying not to worry too much myself with that, and focusing on creating solutions. But sometimes.. money and people are needed (to buy more testing devices) we have only one borrowed n810! : / and what I really wanted was to replicate some very complicated devices (like lots of repos, and versions of things) to test even better. But sometimes.. there's no money and time to do that. (actually in brasil is almost impossible to buy the tablets) so we try to bring one or two when we travel abroad.
But in this update one thing made us happy : a lot of people were able to install correctly. And we did a lot of testing with differetn setups and it was perfect. What failed was those very complex use cases, (and they are in huge numbers) that we still don't know how to deal perfectly with... but we will improve. And in the end.. this is the BEST way ever to find bugs, you guys really put it to prove.
And other thing : I think the relationship between you guys and us the team, is just getting better and better... and even trolls are staying out of the threads. Come one... I do accept critics, and make what is possible to improve them... but trolls sucks when they just come to demolish you. I can deal with them... but now I see that people here are really more into "let the guys to their work, and let's see where we can go".
Closing : I think it's become clear our way of working : we say what we will do, we do a little more, we talk, we release it, we listen, we improve.. we release.. and this is not slow was the first canola. This was the reason...we wanted to be able to release fast! and now... in 1 week, we have youtube working.. it's looking nice.. it will be criticized of course (I think mplayer is not letting us seek or buffering the move) people will ask to be able to download (but we will not put in first version because downloads are becoming evil...) and we are studing a way of streaming while saving.. thus you can just Ï want to save" but in the begging I think it will be a good test. Also I have plans for a audiobook plugin (with bookmarks) the last.fm scrobble is also coming, zooming in pictures, browse by folder.. third party plugin support...all of this in 3-4 weeks =)

Wow! Jeremy you have a real big card there. Do you believe we actually dont have one of this =) it's so hard to find those in brazil : / last time I was abroad I brought with my money one 8 gigabyte, but earning in reals sucks to pay in euros =) and to ask the company takes MONTHS. but yes... we will try like always improve this time... or at least avoid it in the beginning.. but the device flash is slow : /
As far as the embedded images, what is the specification/size/format that canola tuning is looking for?
Well we need 2 images : 300x300 and 150x150. If it is 300x 300 I think it saves time and space...
Also how does canola tuning come up with the album art i.e. does it try and use the embedded album art in the mp3 file, then the folder and if that does not exist does it then try to look up the album on the web? Just curious as I would like to improve its success rate with the album art as when they are populated it looks great!
It first looks for the embedded, then for the file inside the folder and last it tries to download it.
So in the end, what we want to do now is the last step : to make you able to choose from the downloaded album arts AND even pick from filesytem.
Also if it looks at the folder for cover art, all of the folders had a folder.jpg file which was stored there by media monkey (media organizing app), does this also have to be a particular size - I had to use images from different sources so some were probably larger than others which may have caused problems...
if they are 300x300 better =) and faster =)
Finally if all else fails and I have to populate the cover art manually within C2, where is the cover art stored, is there a particular size and format that is required (sorry if you answered this one before)?
No problem .. is there in the home/user/.canola/cover
In a "artists/album" structure..(take care with accents, and spaces) and with a 300x300 and 150x150 format.
you will notice that are several covers in some folders, it's because we alreay have the code for chosing the cover ... = )
@Rjdourdry :

if you are running out of space, you can create a symbolic link for your card.
But I think this is the case of placing a option to choose the device to store.

Hi guys, we need to make a post with some "tips" about the basics of reporting errors =) then we can avoid the same question.
Also to some people to see there like a known issues so we avoid new threads with the same questions... I am not an admin thus I cannot move threads and etc. (I don't worry too much is just to help people find things easier)
So let see if I can help :
@loughmillermedia
I don't think there's a "right' way of organizing your collection =) goes with your way of organizing your stuff, or sometimes you don't care about it because your player does it for you on the desktop (like windows media player.. or even itunes).
But if you want some tips (the website, has a section called : using canola..) that has some tips on organizing and even some free software to help you with that.
The basic thing, would be to have a folder called "Music" on the root of you media card... and then folder by artist name... and then by album name. Some software does that automatically for you.
After that you could take some time.. but it worths it.. to do the fix of your music's TAGs using also some tagging software (Picard is a good option and it's free)
And then just throw it back on your card... start canola, set the "Folders" for each content and go!
* then send us the bugs =)
@Mad Deer :
Unm, difficult to say, but It would be wise to try removing it first now..
apt-get -f remove canola2
then all the libraries..
and then trying to install again after a reboot to kill the daemons.
You can look at the correct commands in the other threads...

Hi Dburr...
Your problems seems to be the dependencie problem.. where you have some components that are different version from what they should be.
You should do the same as listed in other threads.
Of course, please always tell us what device and software version do you have.. sometimes they are hardware specific... like the 770 with HE -> is really not that good...

Jeremy to save your space now.. you can do a link from the a folder in the mmc / sd to the internal canola cover folder. It will work the same way =)
This is actually what a visual option will do.
For canola will always be /home/user/.canola/cover
but for you can be anywhere.. just create a link

Just to make sure : did you follow the instructions on how to install on HE (not using the 2007 packages but the 2006) ?
My suggestion is to do a clean unninstall ( theres a thread that talks about this : how to remove canola 8x00 from 770 ) and then reboot, and install a clean version after that following the instructions.
But I will post my advice : HE is a complicated distro... I would suggest you to use the more stable 2006 version if you can.

I too had the 'unable to install' error with the appearing icon and non-functioning program, and had to figure out how to get root to be able to remove the failed install.
For reference, this is on my N810, using the instructions on the Canola website. I've never had any previous version of Canola installed.
I have the following repositories:
Nokia catalog
Nokia catalog (3rd party software)
Nokia System Software Updates
maemo Extras
Graham Cobb's repository (www.cobb.uk.net/apt user)
Maemo Hackers (maemo-hackers.org/apt main)
FBReader Repository (www.fbreader.org/maemo user)
Vagalume Last.fm Client (apt.igalia.com vagalume)
maemo (repository.maemo.org free non-free)
That's it -- very few applications installed so far, as you can imagine. I can give you a full list if that would be useful in tracking down what might be causing the dependency issue, as some were installed directly.
I realize this is beta software, and am quite intrigued by what I've seen in screenshots and heard about the program. But as a "wanting to use it out-of-the-box" user, the failed install/uninstall experience isn't a good one.
Now that I've apparently gotten it successfully removed, I won't be retrying the install process again unless you need/want me to reproduce errors. I realize I could install it via apt-get now, but I'd rather test out the 'end result' and install via the application manager as normal.

I'm responsible for Canola2 "user experience" side, and as you can imagine this if for sure our biggest concern. As I said in other posts we have a limited number of devices and even with that, we tested with all the platforms with all the softwares with canola 1 and canola2 installed. Everything goes fine... it's really one of the repos that is causing this whole madness and we will find out.

Thanks for being patient with us, and I can assure you we're doing our best to every release improve it. But seems that Murphy's law just love us =)
Jokes aside, I think it's our biggest challenger now, figure out how to "protect" the software from this "adversities" and in the end... We know that even if it's not our fault.. it becomes our fault! The question is always : "How to deal with complex user behaviors " in a platform with now dozen of repositories? : /
Thanks again!

No, the ln command will create a "link" that when you try to access the /home/user/.canola/covers , it redirects any application to the other folder. Including canola. So canola don't execute it never, and if you need to remove in the future you need to do it.

rjoudrey, yes it would appear that they use device memory - I located the folder and it is here ~/.canola/covers.
I have all my covers in my removable flash SD card in a subdir called covers (i.e. /media/mmc1/covers)
I am a bit of a noob so sorry for the dumb question, but how can I easily copy these covers into a folder C2 will see? I can access my N800 using SSH - so a simple copy command would be good.
Would it by any chance be somehing like
cp /media/mmc1/covers/*.* ~/.canola/covers
(this does not work - so although the C2 covers directory is stated above to be ~/.canola/covers I don't understand enough about Linux file / directory / command conventions to understand where I am going wrong!)

Dbuur : the other threads points to the same problems, and you still face them : /
something must be wrong in the middle way : /
We have been talking with some people with the same problems and at least the final thing : the install / unninstall completely throught apt solves it.
A note : Installing and unninstalling using the application manager DOESN'T solve the problem, because the application manager gets lost with the error.
But as you said, you have done a completely unninstall (with APT as root) and still have the same problem) we just have one last solution.
If you have an IP, we can try connecting remotly to your 770 and installing for you.
That's the last thing that we can do.

It's not straight light that =)
Please there's some threads about cover that peoples explain detailed the process.
If you want to user your covers you need to make sure of some details :
Folder is in :
/home/user/.canola/covers
Inside is by
/artist/albumname
But there's a couple of rules( no spaces, no special characteres, etc)
And then.. you have 2 sizes of file:

Dbuur : the other threads points to the same problems, and you still face them : /
something must be wrong in the middle way : /
We have been talking with some people with the same problems and at least the final thing : the install / unninstall completely throught apt solves it.
A note : Installing and unninstalling using the application manager DOESN'T solve the problem, because the application manager gets lost with the error.
But as you said, you have done a completely unninstall (with APT as root) and still have the same problem) we just have one last solution.
If you have an IP, we can try connecting remotly to your 770 and installing for you.
That's the last thing that we can do.

Just got my N800 in and went ahead and flashed straight to the latest OS2008. Afterwards, before installing anything else tried installing Canola from the indt website and it failed. Since the device is new without anything else on it yet I went ahead and reinstalled OS2008, went straight to Canola again and it installed properly this time.
So far, now that it is working, its been great.

Hi there
I'm having hard times getting video to play straightaway on my N770 (2006). I start Canola and go into my videos, click on one of them and have to wait ages (3-4 minutes) before it starts. Sometimes the first frame shows after about 2 minutes. As soon as it opens it plays smoothly and when I choose another video it starts immediately, so it's just the first time the video player starts. After I quit Canola and start it again the same thing happens. I have tried fiddling with virtual memory setting but it doesn't seem to be of any help .
When I play the videos in Mplayer they play just fine, I only have to wait 2-3 seconds before they start.
Has anyone experienced similar problems? I'm not quite sure whether it's a bug or N700's hardware limitations.
I use the latest Mplayer as well as Python 2.5
Other than the videos everyone works great.
I would like to thank handful and the team for creating this awesome piece of software. Keep it up!

Hi roberto,
It seems that we are hitting against a mix of canola2 architecture x platform architecture x device limitations.
Talking with the guys, they told me that is probable that When canola talks to it's media engine (ATABAKE, which takes care of who is going to play a media file) it uses DBUS, and it's possible that DBUS messages are being delayed between this communication, thus it takes time to mplayer start. Also the fact that also maybe happening some swap of memory thus leading to more delays (as canola is not a light application)
We received this complaint, and we will investigate further.. but if we come to a conclusion that to help this we need to change too much in the architecture (and it's not needed for the 2 newer devices) unfortunately we don't go that way, as we want to promote the platform not run against it.
But if in the future these bottlenecks starts to appears to much we will try to come up with something.
Anyways this are the suspects, and we will investigate further to see what we can do!
I tried following the instructions on the website but Canola doesn't load. When I run it in terminal using Canola -vvvv I get this :
~ $ canola -v

Really enjoying Canola. Thanks!
One question : most of my library is in .m4a format from iTunes. I notice that only .mp3 tracks are getting album artwork, and are being correctly organized into artist and album categories. Does this mean I should convert my library to .mp3, or am I doing something wrong?
ghoonk
02-06-2008, 05:16 AM
IIRC, the change log states that organization of M4A files are not yet supported :
http://openbossa.indt.org.br/canola/using.html
My [FLAC, M4A, AAC] music doesn't get organized! Sorry but we are also adding support format by format. We had only mp3, now we have ogg and wma and in the near future all the formats supported by the platform will be properly supported inside Canola.
It's kinda useful to read the developer's page on known issues before you blindly install software, just so you don't get any surprises :)
Aha! Thanks for pointing me to that. I'll hang on for a while before converting all my music then.

I had the same 'problem' in the past, but IMHO, if you're using run-of-the-mill earphones from Sony (e.g. EX-71, etc), the sound quality of M4As doesn't make enough difference on the go to warrant the extra 40% of storage space that M4A files suck up :(

Hi Neil,
first if something is wrong, then somethings is written to the "log"
Can you take a look in the application manager menu and send us the log?
It's most probably that you're a facing one of the installation problems due to application manager x package madness.
So you can do the removal using pablob tips:
http://www.internettablettalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=16051
and then install again using the ssh (or xterm) but I recommend using SSH :
Tip by stoo :
http://www.internettablettalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=16075
This will for sure fix it.
Of course, if you don't have anything important right now on the device there's the easiest but we don't recommend because people can lose their other applications :
Flash the device and first thing install canola. It will work for sure.
After that be sure to install mplayer and canola-tuning

I am using a N800, as for repositories, I added a ton. Regardless of my previous problems, I followed your link in the post above to the "uninstall" instructions looked in as root and the install via terminal. After doing that it seems to work!

This new version of Canola still has the same bugs with Unicode names that the previous version did. I am using IT OS 2007 and have the CJK software installed for Japanese support.
Neither the Nokia media player nor mplayer have any of these problems. Of course, Canola is much prettier and has kinetic scrolling ala Apple iToy; but if it can't handle my media library I can't very well show it off...:(
Specific problems:
The music player does not show any Artists or Albums for any music files that have Japanese strings anywhere (file name, song name, artist name, album name) even if the item itself is ASCII. For example, an ASCII Album name in the albums list won't show up because there's a Japanese artist or song name.
Under All Songs, the missing songs all show up with the proper Japanese names. But when you try to play it, the player ends up showing up the song as being 0:00 duration and it won't play.
The video viewer will show videos which have Japanese file names, but it shows a 4:3 movie s-t-r-e-t-c-h-e-d to 16:9. Both the Nokia media player and mplayer show it in proper aspect ratio.
The photo viewer will show photos that have Japanese file names, but the file names themselves show up as blurs.
Also, for no apparent reason, Canola suddenly terminates.
My guess is that, since Canola is apparently based upon Python, that it fails to apply proper quoting to Unicode strings. I hope that this gets fixed soon.
Thanks for your attention.

Mrcrispin,
(Forgot one thing: the bug is for the 2006 and 2007, fixed already on 2008)
(2008 is a huge leap from the 2007, and solves a lot of bug, you could update right? or are you using 770 HE?)
There are couple of more issues. One of them is that we use DBUS for managing communication inter the process (Canola -> Atabake -> Media Player) and thus you have a fatal bug, that doesn't affect the media player nor the mplayer: Dbus can handle the unicode strings (when we send it "play this file name".
Altought, we didn't say in the changelog that this was fixed (AFAIK) and we have been saying that it's under the todo and will be done. It just takes a little bit of time to be able to implement everything / test it / and deliver.
I think the video stretch is also commented in a thread, is a known issue, and the latest version of mplayer improved this stretch problem, but it is possible that is happening again.
If it is terminating, there's a reason, if you can start canola in the terminal (using -vv as argument) it would be nice to receive the reason while it is quitting. Maybe is related to the unicode, but I don't think it's python's fault.. as it supports unicode.
So, as I asked some other guys, please send me some of your files, so I can add to the media card, and this will help us speed up the development in this front.
Anyways it is indeed a bug...

I was loading up my N800 with media and I noticed something. Maybe the way I want to store my photos for example is odd, but I think that it makes browsing easier.
On my memory card, I setup main folders (i.e. Vacations) and then put subfolders in there (i.e. Talladega 2007, SeaWorld 2007) but when I browse with Canola the parent folder doesn't show up but the subfolders do. I would think being able to browse through subfolders, rather then having ALL of your photo folders on one page would be a good option to have. But then you probably wouldn't use the cool scrolling feature as much though.
Just passing on an idea.

@Extreme :
We today actually don't do "folder browsing" just "browse your collection of watched folders" all in the same level.
As this is requested a lot by the users, it's being developed first for music, but I requested it to be as reusable as possible so for example photos could benefit from that.
But I really don't think (personally) that's the way a more "media center" oriented app should behave. Browsing folders is more for a file manager IMHO, but seems that people likes to connect with their organization of files, thus folder browsing becomes indeed quite important!
Thanks for the suggestion

When you have 100+ different photo folders, I just think its easier to group them down a little bit, to make browsing easier. Don't know the difficulty in incorporating it, but if it could be an option for those who want it, so that it doesn't effect the people who like it how it is.
Kudos to you and your crew though for making a great app for the maemo platform.

The thing is really not about difficulty =) it's more like the most famous picture applications on the desktops (Picasa, iphoto etc) you browse by your albuns, not folders...
And the thing of not being about complicated things.. is to keep the design simple.
Sometimes it sucks for some users, but we need to avoid adding "more and more " styles / options to avoid clumsyness or bloatness... if we "accept" every single "wish"
we end up killing the basic thing : being simple.
But anyways, this is how we are doing, we note the suggestion, it goes into a worksheet, and everytime is requested I increase it's rating... once reaches high rating it comes into , if just a couple of people ask, unfortunately we think twice if is really needed. Sometimes makes sense.. sometimes doesn't make
For example : for music... it does makes a lot more sense than photos, but this is also a point that could be discussed =)
but thanks ..
Laughing : not possible now, but it can be (actually the white part of the photo was to show that... just lack of time... :/

For me, control over folder access is important. I carry around 1 folder of MP3 of famous speeches and 1 folder of comedy. I also have lots of songs. In Canola, you give me no way to block the speeches or comedy from music playback. Ive been learning to get podcasts from New York Times in MP3 format. I don't want Canola to play those.
There's no downer so bad as when you listen to music and along comes the state of the union address or some stupid news report.

It's very odd this issue, we have some 770 with 2006 and it's very slow in the first run, but then it becomes "more usable". Also it depends on for example what kind of video do you have.
but I will not lie, the first version works a lot better on the 770, it was made from scratch for that device, and dealt with all the problems back them...
The Canola2 can run, but seems that for a lot of users is way too slow.

Hi Handful, I was wondering about the Podcast option, when I DL a podcast it auto goes into the podcast folder, and when I DL a Video Podcast it does the same, but when you go to your video Icon to play the video that I DL it won't show up as it resides in the Podcast folder and NOT the Video folder. So my question would be will this be addressed in the next update (as we've talked before about adding the VideoCast option) or at some point will there be an option in the settings onto which folder to DL Podcasts/Videocasts to ?
For the time being I just do the DL's and then move the vidcasts from the podcast folder into the video folder and it all works fine.
I've also DL the latest 0.2.5 Tuner and it seems to work great.

Jhoff : good question, :/ but I think you can set how you want to run it with arguments ( and ask to do only id3 search ) if you run it normally it does the full job :
1) id3
2) album on folder
3) internet
The volume is a NASTY bug, we are trying to fix it, but what happens :
you have running on your device the OMS (osso media server) and a OSSO media player! we (CAnola) talk to osso media server) and ask it to keep the volume in the same level, the thing is that THEN from out of nowhere the default media player (even not actually running) goes there and sets up to it's volume.. thus creating this effect.
We are going to report the rror, ask to be fixed, but for now what I can say is try to open the default media player set something like your favotire volume and use it as bases.

If you look in the Application Manager Log (available through the menus) it is usually more informative. I have seen this error when a signed package is installed and the update is either unsigned or signed using a different key. I didn't encounter this with the Canola2beta3 update so your problem might be different.

I uninstalled the previous version I had installed and then installed the update and it worked perfectly.

With Marcelo's help, I was able to get Canola 2 installed on my 770 Gregale. A little sluggish but no problems,,,except one. Some of my images do not show up as thumbnails. It's as if Canola just doesn't find them at all. They are normal sized jpeg images and are in the same folder as some images that do display. I have no idea what's wrong.
Help please.
Thanks for all the work you've done on this awsome program!
Neil
Canola2 beta3 won't start on my N800 with OS2007. I get the following messages on the console:
$ canola

I already tried complete deinstall and reboot with power disconnected. Beta2 worked fine (after initial troubles with remnants of an already deinstalled edje-demo). Any ideas?
Thank you!

Hi Mich :
When you say complete "deinstall" do you mean the one logging as root and forcing unninstall of everything ?
If not, try that, reboot and install again... I think should solve it!

Thanks handful for the prompt response. I deinstalled via application manager before, now I did dpkg -P canola2, reboot, apt-get install canola2, reboot. Unfortunately, the problem stays the same.

hi Mich:
I think you need to do the full unninstall , (using apt-get -f remove canola2 ) and also the same command for the dependencies (there's at least 2 threads here teaching the commands)
And then, you can do a apt-get install canola2 that will for sure work!
