View Full Version : Need MicroB's useragent info from clean about:config

In Firefox MicroB, I put in a value for general.useragent.override in about:config in order to make my N800 look to websites like it was an iPhone. (See ITT forum posts http://tinyurl.com/37qyw6 and http://tinyurl.com/yog6s8) (Alternatively, see http://tinyurl.com/2rj6vm)

Following the same instructions, I ought to be able to go back to "being an N800" by entering a blank value for general.useragent.override. But Nokia's N800 user doesn't recognize my device as an N-series and Google Docs (which used to work for me on my N800) now says that my browser is unsupported (though it has a workaround).

So, first up: Is there a way (short of flashing) to return to the default config file?

Or ... if someone who hasn't screwed around with the useragent settings in the MicroB config file could tell me:

Is there a general.useragent.override entry in it to begin with? (It would be between general.useragent.locale and general.useragent.security.)

If there is, what is its value?

Thanks!

Can't answer your questions in general, but in case you need an easy way to see the current user agent value you can use the following link:
http://www.showmyip.com/?version=full
(it's got a lot of info but there's 'Browser (User-Agent)' down there somewhere)

Thanks, TA-t3. That helps, and it's a very useful link. I now know:

My reported useragent info is:

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1.11) Gecko/20071127 Firefox/2.0.0.11

Nonetheless, Google is telling me that I need to get Firefox 1.5 or above!

So I'm still looking for that other info.

Anybody can help (so long as you haven't screwed around with your config file):
Just enter about:config in your browser address (instead of http:..) and see if you have an entry for general.useragent.override.

Another thing that may help me in this:

Could someone who CAN get on the Nokia OS2008 User site (http://europe.nokia.com/A4579470) please go to this address -- http://www.showmyip.com/?version=full -- and tell me what value it says YOU have for "Browser (User-Agent)"?

the about:config on my n810 shows

general.useragent.vendor
Firefox/3.0a1 Tablet broswer 02.2 RX-34+RX-44_2008SE_2-2007.50-2

there is no entry for general.useragent.override

Try this:

Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux armv6l; en-US; rv:1.9a6pre) Gecko/20070807 Firefox/3.0a1 Tablet browser 0.1.16 RX-34_2007SE_4.2007.26-8

There are a bunch more here:
http://www.zytrax.com/tech/web/mobile_ids.html

I had the same issue at one time. Used the string above, problem solved.

bradfarris, THANKS! That worked great. The "bunch more" might be fun to play with at some point, too.

(Also, if anyone tries following this thread and is confused by what I said showmyip showed my useragent string to be, that's because I stupidly went there on my laptop, not my N800. Browsing there via my N800, it showed up as blank -- a reasonable outcome since at that time I had my useragent.override value blank.)

Had the same problem. I left the override blank, which worked to change the appearance of gmail, but was not enough.

Currently the value in general.user.agent.vendor is

Firefox/3.0a1 Tablet browser 0.2.2 RX-34+RX-44_2008SE_2.2007.50-2

The Ip reports no user agent for the browser..

Is this wrong? And if not why wouldn't the browser be recognized by the Nokia User Site?

I am sure I am missing something.

Should I introduce the string

Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux armv6l; en-US; rv:1.9a6pre) Gecko/20070807 Firefox/3.0a1 Tablet browser 0.1.16 RX-34_2007SE_4.2007.26-8

under general.user.agent.vendor? Or somewhere else?

Sorry for the bother.I am not very familiar with coding.

Help is much appreciated.

Antonio

Put that string into general.useragent.override (there is no period between user and agent -- just one word)

I just deleted my .mozilla directory to reset things. The iphone 'hack' is cool, like the way some pages look, but it causes frequent crashes... at least for me.

There's an extension to Firefox that would be extremely useful to MicroB. It's called User Agent Switcher (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/59).

It well could be ported to Maemo... who knows?

yes. It works great for firefox. Is it possible to port to maemo?

Well, the easy thing right now is to use a series of bookmarks (one for each useragent) that point to stuff like:
about:config?prefname=general.useragent.override&prefvalue=Mozilla%2F5.0+%28N8x0+like+iPhone%3B+U%3 B+Linux+like+Mac+OS+X%3B+ARM%3B+en%29+AppleWebKit% 2F420%2B+%28Gecko%2C+like+KHTML%29

Not as easy as UA switcher; you wind up on about:config, and have to navigate back to where you were. But it's fairly easy, prboably easy enough to keep anyone from being motivated to port UA switcher...

Good luck is right.

The Default setting (i.e., tablet browser) for that extension is completely busted and only sets appname and appversion strings. I've had to manually enter in all of the user-agent just to get Facebook working again. But there's still something wrong with it as the Tableteer site doesn't recognize the tablet as a tablet. "Platform" and "User Agents" (note the plural) are still blank in its chrome settings panel, and I have no idea what they should be.
