It works pretty well for me on N800. I have a few comments.

1. "empty" genre should be deleted. I have a bunch of files with tags that canola can't read. For them, the genre shows as a number like (57) or (13). I'm working on my PC with tagtool to rewrite tags and i fixed most of them. Files now have correct genre, but my genre list in canola still has the mistakes. I can delete database file and rerun to fix. But i think canola should do it.

I wish there were a way to edit tags within the n800.

2. Can canola allow me to delete songs? Sometimes something I hate plays and I need to remove it. the built in music player allows it. canola should.

3. In the genre view, can you show artist and song? I have lots of versions of the same song and need to differentiate.

You should understand this. I don't use the cover art downloader. Most of my songs are mp3 that I created in the old days-one big directory of files, no tags or incomplete tags, no info on album. I saw tags as an evil RIAA conspiracy. It would not be possiible to reorganize everything in directories by album name.

5. I don't wannt playback to start so soon. In genre view, I wonder 'which is that' and when I choose to read more, then the song plays, but I did not want it to.

6. The canola diisplay is full screen. I find it very tough to navigate to other programs to get podcast addresses and paste them into canola.

7. Can you tell us how to remmove built in media player annd make canola default?

A weird problem I noticed -- when using the N810's keyboard, I couldn't get the 'fn' or caps keys to work at all. This resulted in me having to pull up the onscreen keyboard in order to type in a URL, since I couldn't get a / or ? or = any other way...

Apart from that we will dive into the things you said.

I understand your need, but for now we don't have plans to do that. We focus first on consumption of your media. Managing it, should be (at least in our opinion) done where you whole media is located (your pc) with easier input etc.

While we do have plans to allow videos to be deleted (like the podcasts) we don't have plans to add it, but there's already a design to do that. Maybe in the future. (again : less features, not more features ) .. and we are not trying to do everything the media player does... that's is not the point..

Suggestion written, we will investigate this, but again, low priority.

I understand =) And you should understand something :

1) we cannot fulfill everyone's dreams and needs. It's just impossible. It would be a mess of UI to allow people to do everything every single one wants. So before saying "Canola should ... canola should " why don't try the "Canola could.." "would it be nice if Canola", just to be as polite as we are with everyone =)

2) We cannot focus canola on one user's profile, and thus we have the painful job of choosing this that will not enter. Sorry, but it's just not possible to have everything.

BUT.. of course there's issues that are general, and maybe your problem will be solved in another way... if our additions planned solve them.. nice, if not we will not be able to add them. BUT you still have 2 last resorts:

a) if more people have the same need as you, there will be not only feature request, but someone is going to do a plugin to help this.

b) exercise your freedom, and search for a player that better fits your needs ( I really don't like this one : ) )

Don't get me wrong =) But you write as we are developing canola just for you. Maybe is not your intention but sounds a little more "rude" than it should. Why don't you try

"Maybe the playback could take longer"...

Maybe the addition of more info like you said help this out, but we will not change the click -> play speed. Actually I would make it even faster if it was possible. less delay is the key

The design only works because it's fullscreen. Thats a high price for a lot of people, but again, you can choose.

anyways I really don't see how is that difficult to just click on the home button on your n800 and click on the home menu to go back to any other application. 2 interactions! the same if there was control in the fullscreen button! one to minimize canola other to choose the application to go.

Hit home, the menu of open applications will appear choose the next app.

Why is that hard to do ?


7. Can you tell us how to remmove built in media player annd make canola default?

Guys, please... tell us a little bit more about your problems before posting.
I cannot help a "Wheres my photos" message : /

So guide to posting :

1. Face the problem
2. try to reproduce it
[once you are able to reproduce it]
3. state your system, firmware (and if needed canola version 2 or 3 )
4. run canola on xterm, look for exceptions or errors, paste it here for us
5. if something is missing, try a reboot (without the power cable)
6. check the media library. Are your folder "checked" to watch for content?

If you have soundtrack CDs (multiple artists in one album) it can happen that they will be duplicated by Canola. There are just several ways tags can "show that is a compilation" so to avoid guessing, and make dirty hacks, we did this multiple entries wizard.

What does it do?

It searchs your media library for possible duplicated albums that should be one. For example.. you have a tribute to Metallica, and it appears as 14 different albums (one for each artist) instead of just 1.

hitting the multiple entries, the album will appear that... click it will show you a selection of the possible albums that are part of that one... just make sure they are one album.. hit combine... canola will clean up, copy covers everything for you.

Rocketman : then you need to send us the URLs, we need to investigate what could be happening. Podcasts sometimes have different formats, publishers forgets some tags, and maybe one of these details slow downs canola parsing. But we can only improve this if you send those problematic feeds for us.

JD : please send us the feed so we can test / improve it and fix any bugs that maybe causing that.

The keyboard is a known issue (we found what yesterday actually) we are already working on that... sorry for that, we will try to release a quick update to fix this as it is very serious...

We are working on a better flickr client. This one todays needs to download the picture (sometimes comes too big) then need to scale it down, etc etc.. so it gets slow sometimes. But in fast networks it works "ok" not optimal but ok.

Anyways, thanks for the feedback we will keep investigating and trying to improve.

NO! Thank YOU for this wonderful piece of software. Canola is my primary media player for the tablet :-)

What I *really* want is the possibility to choose the cover image for the albums. I hope you can add that in the next release.

Wazd: Thanks! =) actually you can take a look in the WUD video ( marceloeduardo.blip.tv ) that I showcase this cover selection.

The goal now is really how to add the features you guys want, without needing to add more buttons / clumsy.

The cover selection is an example. Can be a little bit "hidden" for some users, but once you learn it, maybe other things can happen. If you could see the trick for the now playing screen you would be quite excited about it, but IP problems prevent us from doing it.. maybe in the future= )

Youtube is almost there =) actually is fully done ( streaming videos ) but there seems to be a bug with mplayer that some videos fails. We are investigating.. but the plan is to have it in the next big update!

About the save the videos, that was the goal, but we cannot stream / save at the same time at the moment. It seems that the way mplayer streams doesn't let us do that. Of course people will be able to download it using the future videocast feature but we are not going to dive into this right now.

Honestly, I have seen very little change between the versions, in fact none. I have deleted the entire program and tuning and still see the same ID3 tag mistakes on the reinstall. Is there a database thats needs to be removed somewhere? All my music has been repaired with fixtunes and everything is perfect in the files. I just don't get it. Mediabox loads all the files quickly and displays all album covers and artistnames and titles perfectly! Am I not getting something. I think your goals with Canola may be too complex for someone who needs a simple MP3 player.

You should not see it, actually you should not see almost at all.. why? because sometimes they are bugs (happily) you haven't faced =)

The thing is : we are not nearly done rj, and once it's there it will be able to load correct (and some incorrect) media files and display them correctly.

If the ID3 problems still happening, it's because it was not fully fixed. There was nothing on the changelog about it : / it's because takes more time.

We are just releasing faster,.. to make sure we get feedback faster than the software evolves faster.

You should not consider "each release" as a new version. They are small. iterative updates searching for a common goal.

But hei, no worries, I am a advocate for choice as I talk a lot here... if it's not able to fulfill your needs you have plenty of options eg: the media box as you said.

Unfortunately for me, mediabox doesn't even handle my photo collection, thus I can choose between quiver and canola, both can handle it and then I decided which one to use. Problems will always happen, then is up to the applications to evolve and fix them.

So, in the end : it was 5 days work, did you really think we were going to do some major updates? =)

ps: try deleting it (/home/user/.canola/canola.db ) but if there's a bug still on our id3 parsing.. it will still be there.

I noticed if one continues to hold the Fn or Caps key while typing it should work just fine.

could you open a bug in garage (https://garage.maemo.org/tracker/?func=add&group_id=125&atid=1989) and upload these big sized pictures that are preventing canola from showing your pictures?

this is probably an issue with the configuration of lightmediascanner, the open source project that canola uses to parse media files. currently if it takes more than 1 second to parse any file, it skips this file and it may loose some other files that were previously processed. this should not happen in pictures as we read only the headers and the exif tags of the files, but there might be some bug in the scanner with those big images.

b. did you try pablob tips, in fully removing (using terminal) canola2, it's library and then tried installing again?

and of course we set some " priorities" like.. not detecting people's song, id3 problems as first to go :/

Actually I have one big sd card (8 and 4 gigas) that are used as My media and also ended up as canola testing cards (of course I added a lot of media from people here in the forum)

As we are loading the pictures with no hacks, I think what's happening is not really a bug, just memory full, because Mediabox says
" Loading 1086 items " goes.. goes... and then locks everything up... not even the home button in hardware answers, or when it answers couple of minutes ago nothing is able to drawn there.

I think you can test with a bigger library only to see if that's hte problem...

But it was not a critic, or even that I think it's a real problem for you... was just a way of exemplifying that things sometimes doesn't work for our specifics " scenarios " the same way like canola doesn't have the sense support, or even will never have the same "playlist" style of kagu.. or the always on menu approach you chose. That's the beauty of it =)

Even, there's already a lot of open source media player =) why one more (Ok, I'm kidding on this one)

But hey! 75% of canola is open source =)

I always forget to answer those questions. I did install the correct version, and I did use the terminal to erase all of the previous install.

dbuurr : our last resort then :

1) did you install some fix to the kernel, what kind of applications / repositories do you have installed?

Because, what is our starting point :

we get clean devices, flashed, no applications nothing... and install canola in all of them.. in all firmwares possibles in the 3 devices (770, n800 and n810) if Canola itself had a problem on it's own those installation would fail.

But canola can have a failure attached to the presence or absense of some component due to the installation of other applications...

Also, HE is by far from our point of view the worst firmware to use with Canola... but we indeed have canola2 installing fine on it : /

So send me more information on those... and I know it sucks to suggest that... could you do a clean install? (from a flashed device) ?

Hi Canola team, I have just updated my Canola 2 beta from beta 2 to beta 3 and added Canola Tuning Apps on my Nokia 770 (OS2006) & N800 & N810 (OS2008) from the Application Manager with NO problems on any of the three platforms. Very impressed with the smooth installation/update.

Keep up the great work. looking forward to the future update that provides UPnP support :)

--edit--- like the album art selector for each album when in album art view and selecting an album to play then selecting the cover (To see alternatives), it is a little hidden away gem when you find it! ;) :)

UI Feels even smoother in this Canola2 beta 3 release, getting more admiring glances at work when showing friends etc.

At 1st I was all excited to see a new update, but after multiple attempts at updating, uninstalling, reinstalling, cleaning the repository list, etc... I am not able to install Canola. It will keep telling me "installation failed" with no other explanation so now I'm without Canola :(

It seems that any atempt to "unninstall" the failed install goes wrong, because it actually failed install because apt-get (or the engine of the application install ) crashes.

Again, when we do our tests (with clean devices, and with devices with applications) it doesn't happen so we really need the biggest amount of info to help.

So, did you try doing the fulll (command line) unninstall / install ?

If not, please tell us the message in the log on application installer
and the result of running canola from x-term!

not, it's not related to linux...
go to application manager, hit the menu (the icon beside the window title) there's a "Tools" menu... then a "log" item.

But probably you're facing the common dependency problem. I will ask gustavo for the application so you can clean up without needing to resort to command line.

1) trying doing what is said in some post here in ITT about unninstall and install using the terminal. (it's hard for people that is not technically savvy )

2) wait a little bit until we do more tests with the "fix" application made by gustavo.. that fix this problem...

3) flash the device, and the first thing.. install canola (this will for sure work) but we don't want you to loose your settings.

Looks like you have to know where the super secret points on the buttons are to click to open media and to add the checkmark to match that specific media. They have the click point about 2 pixels wide, in the lower right hand "corner" of the eye button (yes ...its a circle and has no "corner"....I know), or the lower right hand corner pixel of the folder icon.
Photo's FINALLY work....but took me longer to point to the media library on the cards, AND make the changes stick (issue # 2), than to actually feel inspired to Oooh and Ahhh at the photo's....more like Cripes and Doh !

Hi... just a little feedback about video selection and management on Canola Beta 3.

The default behavior seems to be a vertical list, complete with video thumbs (assuming you also installed Canola tuning), and it might be nice if the management/display of videos were similar to the music browsing functionality.

For example... when you are browsing through albums in your music collection, you may see a page with a fairly complete list of album covers (first link)... or in the context of a particular album, you always a previous/next album cover (second link), and the navigation is fairly straightforward.

Hi Shack, sorry but canola shouldn't be working like that. The hit area is actually bigger then the ball, (takes a whole square there). We have strict guidelines on how small a button should be, and if needed we increase it.

So, it seems a) either your screen is not calibrated, or b) you have a problematic install.

but the point is: media configuration will be done by a wizard because we really think is pain.

But... FIRST OFF ..using the same irony and sarcasm you are using:
How in earth do you really think it works this way and this is not a bug? Do you think we are crazy?
"Let's put a hit area here.. 2 pixels wide EHEHEH let's scr*** the user lol"

So please, instead of gratuitous irony, report the error, that we will fix if it's a canola mistake, and help if it's not.

Hi slvr32: I think i understood you correctly, and it would be nice if we could make sure people have video thumbnails. We do want to integrate it but it only happens today if you have mplayer. Of course the same with music.

The idea is nice, and I will for sure put into consideration once we advance with the application, I think this can be added after the final release!

Hi Munky, can you test something : touch on the title? it should scroll again...

I think it's a bug, we will investigate more.. but tell me what happens if you touch the name area again. (it should scroll again)

If you really don't fell confortable to do the manual fix that is listed in several threads here.... it would better to wait for the fix. Because it runs like root user is not trivial to make sure everything is ok, but I think the guys will quickly deploy the installation

Edoardo new to internet tablet. N810 great product you can see the future now. installed software update and canola beta 2. updated to canola beta 3 not able to install. studied the forum to figure out the solution. managed to get root access to the machine via ssh. tried to uninstall via terminal, but after apt-get -f remove canola2 I get the following dependency error message. it is requesting to reinstall libgoffice-06-common and not able to find the file to install.

any clue on what can i do. Incidentally I cannot have kagu and ukmp to start up either. so no media player for me.

instalando outra aplicação que dependia desse pacote
libgoffice-0-6-common. Quando rodou o comando apt ele não pode
encontrar esse pacote.

Investigando aqui um pouco, esse pacote é uma dependência para o
Gnumeric, que está no extras-devel. Então a conclusão que eu chego é
ele não tem desabilitou o repositório extras-devel no application
manager, daí o erro de não encontrar aquele pacote.

Mas, como eu disse, são poucas informações. Se for possível pedir pra
ele mandar a lista de repositorios ajudaria.

The Canola2 Beta3 installation went OK, and the music player works fine. However, none of my internet radio stations work. Here is a URL example: http://208.122.59.30:7156

This plays in the built in media player, and also mediabox (version .94). The stream is from Shoutcast.com (sky.fm New Age station - no comments please about it being New Age music!). When I attempt to enter this into Canola, it comes back and says invalid URL.

If I follow the directions referenced on the Canola website for internet radio and "right click on the "tune in" button on shoutcast to copy the link, I get this link to paste into Canola (http://shoutcast.com/sbin/shoutcast-playlist.pls?rn=4977&file=filename.pls)

Canola accepts this and adds "Shoutcast.com (4977) to my list of stations, but always shows "list is empty" when I attempt to play it.

How am I going to survive without listening to Yani??

Just wanted to let you know that I have the most current version of the Canola 2 beta on my 770 Gregale. When it works, I love it!
However, there have been numerous occasions when it locks up my unit requiring either a hard button shutdown or removal of the battery. I guess it is just wearing the memory out!

nspeer : we are aware of that. Unfortunately as we have been saying here, the 770 version is almost a miracle =) The fact is that some of the most important components for Canola, like the Dbus (the component that helps canola 'talk' to other components), are very very old in the 2006. Imagine that they were improved in 2007 and vastly improved in 2008, so it is really almost a miracle that it's still "working"

So, in the end I cannot commit myself or the team to improve the 770 version more that we already did. I did asked to check if there was a way to speed up the first video playback (quite quite quite slow) and some other details but if they are bugs / lack of feature on the components we depend on, that we can't do much...

and we do a lot of "memory consumption" tests, and in the 2008 we didn't find a leak like you're saying... and I think the problem must be also (speaking from our experience in the canola1) that some other component is dieing, and thus locks the device.

There's a file that shows you why it froze last time.

b. Did you reboot the system (without being plugged on power) before installing ( just to make sure all the services are started correctly) if it was first time installing canola... theres no need to do so.

UPNP : is already in final testing, it's a third party pluggin that we are adappting to canola, we plan to release in the next big, feature based update

I tried it here with our beta4 version that is in the works, and it added without problems and it shows one item when I enter the feed.

The internet radio support was rewritten since beta3, so please tell me if works when the new release is out.

I understand that this has implications for GUI design but I would settle for an interim/ alternative solution: restrict canola to only scanning directories containing ".canola" (empty file) or simply a user editable text file stating specific directories to scan?

Some important points for us:

Every user that reported problems with scroll had an old version of python-efl_utils. Could you please run this command on the terminal:

$> dpkg -l | grep efl

and report the version of efl_utils ? It should be 0.1.2+cvs20071220-maemo1

Hi Bitgueist, yes.. after you done that the keyboard on the canola side you also have the paste option.

So hold on the finger on the link, copy link location.. .and when on canola press the menu button (side by side with enter) and choose paste.

Is that what you mean?

heya. i thought id start by thanking marcelo and all his team for the great work and effort put into canola. canola is an amazing piece of software and has always been my #1 music player...till a few days ago :(

since i updated to beta2 and beta3, i (canola) seems to have lost the ability to play music and pictures.
i tried uninstalling then reinstalling canola but no good. im using the lastest firmware on the n800. i did restart the n800 after the installs.
i can click on a song but it doesnt load... heres what i get when i open canola from the terminal

Amir : try using the fix, and installing again? seems that you ghave some problems with the media component... old efl_utils could be the problem.

So please install te canola2-fix from the application installer... reboot and install again! I hope this will solve all your issues, if not , we will not rest until solves that for you!

I've been having some major problems with the podcast feature in Canola2 beta 3.

As a good open source user, I filed a bug report already. It can be seen here (https://garage.maemo.org/tracker/?group_id=125&atid=1989&func=detail&aid=2106).

The problem comes down to this: not all podcast feeds work.

I can install them (that is, they show up in the list of available podcasts).

However, when I actually try to list the individual episodes in each podcast, they fail...

As an example, consider the following two podcasts feeds (hosted on my server):

The one that works is located at: http://www.dubfire.net/feeds/tal.xml
The one that fails is located at: http://www.dubfire.net/feeds/tal-no-reruns.xml

Both are installable, but when I try to view the episodes available in the second feed, the Canola wheel just spins forever. With the first feed, the wheels spins for a second or two, and then a list of available mp3s is shown.

Can someone please look into this for me?

We will look into this, but in a quick glance, it seems that the failing one has not an attributed that maybe needed to canola to work correctly, and that is really important to any podcast application : published DATE, why? because then the application knows what's newer... what's old.. and how to present the data more than just based on position int he feed.

this is my first look opinion, but we will investigate further.

But like in webbrowses.. you need to be patient, if the bug is on canola we will fix asap, but we cannot predict if in case the error is because the podcast producer is not following the standard, of course we will try to support even those with errors, but it will only be when users complain =) like you..

Then we do what we can to fix!

i tried what u recomended ( install and run the fix then reboot and the reinstall canola then reboot) but unfortunatly i still cant play music. canola finds the music but when i ask it to play, it just tries to load and stays like that...

Yeah what I suspected your DBUS communication with Atabake is failing severely, I will pass this to morpheuz, he may ask you a couple of more things.. but I think we will be able to find the source of problem. Something is wrong with Dbus usage / or Dbus itself on your device.. and of others...

I'm running beta3 on an N810 w/ the latest OS available from Nokia. Beta 2 worked OK, but beta3 doesn't ... First, it often sits at the "Checking media library ..." screen for a long time. Not always, though! Also, it now refuses to play videos or audio files. Once I drill down to and click on the filename in Canola, it just hangs. I saw on this thread that I should run from the terminal, so I did that: "canola -v" prints quite a bit of information, and I don't know how to log the terminal output. Here's the last line, though, when it's refusing to open a video/audio file:

Canola rocks! I have only had my tablet for a couple of days and this is by far my favorite app. The only feedback I have is that it seems strange to me to have my podcasts mixed in with my music when I select all songs.

Hi brian,

Not sure if it will works for you, but you probably have some old components in the playback level. So we need information to debug, and seems that most of users are not able to provide them (not their fault) because needs to manipulate in command line.

If you can run with -vv (yes 2 v's) that you will have a better message (best if you run) open canola and then try playing on media. I think you can copy it and send using the email on the tablet (open gmail o browser or even this thread and copy here )
Select the test by dragging the stylus.. and hold down it to copy.

We are already looking after this... the fix is on application manager: canola2-fix

You have that because your top level folder is "watching" the whole card. If you go to settings, media library, audio folder, touch the eye to remove the "V", touch the card name to enter the card folders, and check everything but the podcast folder helps on this.

We wll improve this also in future releases...

I have a small suggestion. How about copying internet-radio list into the Canola from media player or Shoutcast? I think it helds most of the internet stations and it will be easy to just select them instead of typing URLs.

The internet suggestion we are planning and checking if has some legal issues or if we can add in the final version a "suggestion" wizard based on your profile (you choose 3 interests and it adds the best content from the web in that matters )

This integration from media player is also written down, time has prevented us, as we set this as lower priority (first get the basics righ) = ) we are almost there, and after 1.0 in end of march (the plan at least) we will still improve so keep suggestions coming! if fit's our visions... we will gladly implment =)

i tried what u recomended ( install and run the fix then reboot and the reinstall canola then reboot) but unfortunatly i still cant play music. canola finds the music but when i ask it to play, it just tries to load and stays like that...

Okay, first day trying to use Canola Beta 3, on a N800 using latest 2008 OS.

I'm just trying to use the internet radio feature (never even knew such a thing existed, that's how dumb I am).

So I went to http://shoutcast.com/ like it says in the Canola documentation, but if I click on the "tune in" button, it opens up with Mplayer.

I tried typing "shoutcast.com" for the url address under internet radio in Canola and my Nokia crashed hard (locked up) so then I needed to shut off the power.

I would like to add some college internet radio sites but I don't know how to find the addresses for them using the shoutcast site that was provided.

Been looking on these boards and through google but it's such a mess to understand for me.

Can I get a little help on this, even if it's just a web link to help this newbie out? I really don't want to make any Canola Crapola jokes and create any type of unnecessary weirdness between the developers and myself here. :)

This should erase your player's preferences (volume, repeat/shuffle on/off), creating the default file again. It looks like that this file got corrupted somehow. By the way, which one is your device, n800 or n810 ?

Please, try again this command but with "-vvv" and without doing "sudo gainroot" (you should run canola as 'user', not 'root'). It would be good also if you could run canola-fix before trying this again.

Hi, could you give some log details for us ? Just follow these steps while in terminal (menu > utilities > terminal) or through ssh:

$> atabake stop
$> atabake start -vvvv --logfile=log.txt
$> canola -vvv 2> canolalog.txt

try to play your music, exit canola.

paste here or send to my email both log files. If you need any more help, just let me know.

Only started using Canola this week ever. I'm really liking it with a few caveats.
Specifically I can't get 2 of my podcasts to work:

Other than that, just looking forward to hopeful future easier/more support for adding audio/video/photo podcasts, internet radio (got mine working, but it was more work/odd than other clients) and a2dp support(seems like Nokia should have that done...). I wouldn't mind a sleep timer too... (:

BTW, I tried installing Kagu several times and only got it to work once by removing ALL of my music and video and e-mail files(so there were only a couple demo songs on my n800). And after each install/uninstall more of my app memory is missing... So I'm rating Canola WAAY ahead of Kagu! (:

Hi, could you give some log details for us ? Just follow these steps while in terminal (menu > utilities > terminal) or through ssh:

$> atabake stop
$> atabake start -vvvv --logfile=log.txt
$> canola -vvv 2> canolalog.txt

try to play your music, exit canola.

paste here or send to my email both log files. If you need any more help, just let me know.

Hmm...try just:

$> atabake

anyway, it looks like that somehow atabake was not installed on your system for some reason.....Maybe you need to use canola-fix and then install canola again to try to correct this problem. Weird.

I corrected teh commands and ran everything again as you can see in my amended post above. Still nothing. Running atabake tells me the module is missing. I'll try again tonight after my chorus practice.

It looks like that atabake was not installed. Please, use the last version of canola-fix and install canola2 again (remembering to reboot the device after install)

Hi Levi, yes we are looking into those 2 problems:

1) it seems that today canola cannot deal with those "out of standards" feeds, that does not place the mp3 file in the correct tags, like the second one you sent.. places inside the CDATA sections, CDATAS are actually comments, so the parser kind of ignores it :/

We will add support for this lazy done feeds, but it just like the web, you have a standard, some other player goes there pushes people to other direction (like itunes) and everyones is inside a nightmare of compatibility.

2) add easier: Chenca, already added to a development version of the tuning application a small feed handler, that gives you option once you click on a feedlink (then on the feed icon on the bar that appears) letting you save as canola podcast, photocast or iradio.(or even add to the default media player) but I think it still a little complicated, of course you don need to control+c control+v nothing or even open canola, but we will see if we can get a better extension to work, that will just open the same choice once you click on a feed "preview, add to canola?"

Okay...after uninstallation of Canola, Canola tuning, MPlayer
and running Canola-clean-up TWICE, I rebooted, installed Canola and voila it ran!

Then I loaded Canola tuning, ran the album covers...okay.
But when I ran video thumbnails it complained that I had to install the "Evil" mplayer.

So I installed mplayer and that's when everything stopped working again.

Same problem as before...when I invoke Canola from menu, it says "Loading" then n-o-t-h-i-n-g.

This implicates the "Evil" mplayer, don't-you-think?

Hi, thank you for your great work on Canola2 Beta 3. May I suggest a way to play videos with their original aspect ratios? I played some 4:3 files and they were stretched. Also tried some 2.35:1 ratio files ripped from DVDs and they were also stretched. When I play them on Media Player, it plays fine with the black bars on top and bottom. Thank you.

Do you have mplayer installed ? It looks like that canola is using mplayer to play your videos. When it uses mplayer, it stretches the video because we give a window to mplayer (we should correct this with a patch for mplayer).

On the other hand, you can edit the file /home/user/.atabake/config
and change the option "video = mplayer" to "video = oms". Than canola will use oms to play your video files and they'll not be stretched =)

This could also be solved by resizing the window to the correct aspect ratio. Maybe that would be cleaner and quicker than patching mplayer.

That's exactly what it was! There was no video = mplayer line.

However, there was:
mplayer = mplayer
general = mplayer

I changed to
mplayer = oms
general = oms
video = oms

Works perfectly! Thank you!

The problem here is that if we do just like that, only canola would be winning something here, while the correct behavior of mplayer would benefit everybody. So yes, we can do something like that, but the best way would be to fix mplayer.

All - Just notice there was a beta 5 version when I updated application manager but it will not install. Actually we are at 3 so not sure what this is. Can anyone shed some light on this?

It's true, the Canola2-Beta5 is official, if you had problems to update use the Canola2-Cleanup and re-install Canola.

P.s: We jump the Beta4 (Problems with the Build process)

I had to uninstall, reboot, install cleanup tool, reboot, and then reinstall canola, but finally got beta 5 rocking.

I figured I was going extra, but I've found (particularly on the tablets, but on PC, too) that if I'm having issues with an app, rebooting between steps tends to keep things running smooth, specifically if I'm uninstalling/reinstalling things. Plus, it's the tablet, so it's not like it's a huge ordeal to reboot the thing. :)
