View Full Version : Mime types... gotta be a way

I can't believe there is not SOME way to tell the browser in OS2008 to use MPlayer for selected MIME types... There are a number of sites that use streaming WMA or WMV that (I believe) MPlayer can play, but the browser will not invoke MPlayer with the link. I've searched the forums and found some stuff that pertains to the Opera browser, but I don't think they apply now. If anyone can suggest a way to play this media, I'd be obliged to know. :-)

Thanks,

If you can pull the URL of the media itself, couldn't you just feed that into MPlayer directly?

I tried it with a Windows Media 9.1 stream of a Toronto news station (680 News), but I couldn't get it to play in anything on the NIT. :( It connected to the stream, but said it couldn't decode it.

I suppose so, but this is very inconvenient while traveling. It just seems that this should be possible.

There is a post about changing default applications for mime-types here (http://www.internettablettalk.com/forums/showthread.php?p=49856&highlight=evince+pdf#post49856) by editing /usr/share/applications/mimeinfo.cache .I haven't tried it myself.

That works in the default maemo Media Player? Hmmm... Interesting. I thought I tried that one. Can't wait to try it when I get on open wifi! :)
