[Canola] Canola2 Beta5 Feedback Thread

Hi Guys,

I think I fell asleep and didn't post here the changelog or more information.
Chenca has already talked to some of you in some of the threads, but heres goes a "official" release note :)

Beta5 is up, and it's a middle point for the beta6, actually it was supposed to be beta4, but some problems appeared, to make sure it works for everyone we updated to beta5 already.

So, beta5 still a bug fix release, we are launching it because a lot of serious problems were reported and we wanted to make sure people get those fixes. Also, very important : with beta5 and so on.. you can "backup" canola using the backup application from maemo now :)

What's not in: Blue theme, Youtube, Last.fm

What's in : Zoom in the photo viewer and a lot of bug fixes

Here goes the changelog :

Beta 5

A bug with media library access was found that broke podcast after refreshing the media library It also wasn't able to play back mp3, due to missing id3 library files (id3.so) in Light Media Scanner plugin packages

Beta 4
Canola ¶

* Podcast: many fixes, removal of leaks, do not hardcode cover path, new Current Downloads and Queueing support.
* Play audio of videos inside podcasts.
* Internet Radio: support URIs that are not feeds but direct streams (.ra, .mp3)
* Settings: fix "locks" in Media Library folder selection interface.
* Settings: new option to keep choose whether the display should be lit or not while charging.
* Fix problem with database not finding your media the first time after selecting it in "Settings > Media Library".
* Reload cover inside the player when it is changed.
* New (and larger) network and battery icons.
* Fix bug in "cover change" when changing Canola theme.
* Parse various feeds using threads, to avoid UI lockup.
* Feeds are now downloaded to ~/.canola/tmp (or what is specified in the 'temp_dir' setting) and deleted afterward.
* Zoom and pan in photos fullscreen view

So this basically means :

Podcast is working better now, but we still not supporting feedburner correctly (coming in next release), people have requested to have a setting about turning the display off you got it. And LMS (the media scanner is finding MUCH more music now) Thanks for the help on this, and I would ask the asian guys to test it agains your library of japanese and chinese songs to see how it goes now, as we are running to support you better guys!

Tmilr87 : we have been tracking, it seems that some users has a combination of :
alternative repositories (from canola2 beta1 launch) + old libraries, and in the end it gets messy, As you can see in other threads others users were able to install so it's not a problem that happens everytime people try to install.

I already asked information from you : about log files, repositories you have and so on, so we can help you figure out what's happening in your system.

If possible : use the cleanup install and send to us (via Private message) the text that Canola-cleanup says, this can also help us if you have some problems with dependencies.

The new version basically improves handling of Podcasts, option to turn off the screen, improved searching of music files, and improved support for music files with asian fonts. I did the canola2-cleanup a few days ago, then got the Internal Card read-only bug and had to reformat the internal memory card.
I can't remember I did install canola2 beta 1 since my last re-flashing, but I am getting now errors of missing library:

liblightmediascanner0 (= 0.1.3-maemo1) (this appears several times)
along with
lightmediascanner0-*

Should i run the canola2-cleanup again ?

EDIT:

I did solve it by running the canola2-cleanup and installing it from the Terminal !?
first I did an apt-get -f and it reinstalled a few packages I am sure are related to Canola2 (but they should not have been installed!) (like libevas)

Then i did apt-get install canol2 and it complained about:

dpkg: serious warning: files list file for package `libevas0-loader-png' missing, assuming package has no files currently installed.

but went ahead. Also complained when stopping a few daemons and tried to kill some process:

Of course this was not an update, so there was no such daemons of processes running.
At the end it installed and looks like is working, but something went wrong, it should have been an issue-less upgrade.

How do you store your covers ? I'm asking this because Canola-Tuning looks for album covers in several "places" (embedded, in the album directory, amazon and last.fm sites).

Yes, but there's one addition to the whole equation that is very complicated to fix :
people still have "untraceable" behaviors like : some people used the edje demos, some others installed canola1 from the alternative repository, some others have old libraries that for some reason don't get updated, the app manager is clearly breaking sometimes and with some people by no reason and it's not "fully reproduceable".

So while we do fight to see what's doing that we did actually decided that we will keep improving the components, because what seems to be that we would need to developer our own "canola installer" to make sure all the points are under our control.. but this is impossible and it's not good for the platform.

For example : we do clean install in EVERY device, with EVERY firmware (except 2008 for 770) and for several times in a row. It always work.

Then we do updates from the beta3 in the same situation it always go, but... sometimes from nothing the clean install breaks. Server? Application manager bug? Corrupted packages? Hard to now.: /

just checking in to find out if anyone either has or has found a reason as to why C2 just stays at the green screen with nothing in the middle after loading components. I just did a fresh install of the 2007he version and I've had this problem with all versions of C2. I just flashed to HE, so I shouldn't have any crap. Any help would be great.

we are improving it, but the podcast doesn't not support all feeds available out there still...
So please send us the feeds you are having problems we will add to the list (if you did so) they are there.. but we didn';t clean it up still : /

Amazon won't find them because they are local bands from Argentina.

The thing is I can't upgrade Canola-tuning to the lastest version (0.2.5), I get the "Software contains updates to packages isntalled from a different source..." message.

This is a problem with Canola-Daemon, try to reboot the device and start again. If this doesn't work, run Canola-Cleanup and re-install Canola2 following the tutorial on Canola website and reboot the device.

Maybe you already did some of this steps, but is very important to do all steps in this order.

Hello - I just did the steps you mentioned above and I got the same thing. So far, I have run the cleanup, uninstalled via xterm, and installed right after a fresh OS2007he install. I've had the same thing every time. Any other ideas about what it could be?

does Canola-Daemon deal with any other applications or libs that could be causing the problem? I have to run mplayer 2006?? because of HE. The only other software I have on here right now are streamtuner and vagalume client.

After installing Beta5, a strange box like character begins the album and track names. Canola-Tuning can no longer download the art images. My album was fine in Beta3.

How can I relocate cover folder to external storage?

I have an N800 - os2008 rev 51-3 firmware - 2x 8Gb SDHC.
Beta3 was fine then I decided to upgrade to Beta5. I used the canola-cleaner before installing beta5.
I had no problem before hand.

I did not format the SD card since I have not experienced file corruption.

You can just copy it to your mmc and then use it on your computer or you can use the "Notes" application on your tablet to view the file.

If you prefer you can also do:

$> cat log.txt (or cat /media/mmc2/log.txt, depending on what you did on the previous step to generate the log)

hey yeah im actually having the same problem as jabastien - which as a side note didn't show up when i was using beta3 so it's either a consequence of the update process or something in the changes i guess.

Jh13: yeah. maybe the new scaner got them, but they still have problems. Theres's one ocasion that we really cannot help : when the software that wrote the tag confuses the encoding, using one..and saying that is using other. if that's is the case, but sorry we will not fix this for the users : /

jabastien & jh13 tag issue is aligned with what I reported earlier this evening in the Canola IRC Channel.

I have re-checked my tags on the mp3 file I sent to Chenca earlier this evening, I do not believe at this stage that it's and issue with my tagging that causes the box character to appear on newly added Albums since moving from beta 3 to beta 5 of Canola2. (i.e. since the scanner re-scanned for newly added files under beta 5?)

Please note : That the same tags on the mp3 file are read correctly by the build in Media Player.

Thanks for the fast replies and files, we found and fixed.
According to André (Andrunko) the problem was that he is parsing utf-16 little and big endians but not pure (the case of you and also MY music) so now it seems to be working perfectly :)

Box now just on really not supported / bugged characteres, so we are not studying how to update this to you, and of course testing a lot before doing it!

Well, and I'm still facing "Random song bug" but now I've found some dependency. It plays the first second of (-35 to -33) track. Current track - 35 positions :) And It plays it only when current track were played fully from beg to end. And it plays random song very fast. Without any loading like normal playback. Maybe this info will help somehow.
P.S.: C2 doesn't show small thumbs of .png files.

Download and install the Canola2 Cleanup tool. Run it. It will clear your install without deleting those dependencies as well. Then you're ready for a fresh install.

Got up this morning saw an update for Canola 2.0.0-beta5-maemo2 via application manager and updated Canola2. (Thought gosh that was quick with a patched update)

I also noted and downloaded the update of Canola-Tuning to 0.3.0-maemo2.

Feedback information:-

I have deleted my Canola Album Covers and Video thumbs using the following commands as user in xterm.

rm -rf /home/user/.canola/covers
rm -rf /home/user/.canola/video_thumbs

I switched off the device to hard-reboot. I then re ran the cover and Video tuning options to update my covers and video thumbs.

I have also forced and update to my media in Canola2 via the settings Media Library, Refresh all option in UI. (Assumed this would correct any tagging problems in addition to finding new AV Material)

I don't yet see an improvement with the latest tagging "box" problem.

I note that *.png images are still not being visualised in the top level thumbs view.

I am finding it impossible to get a video thumb for each of the various sample movies provided with a purchased N810 when using the Video thumb tuning option. Works for "Anna Abreu - End of Love at 3.34 mins " but never for "Freestyle at 35 secs" I always seem to get blank black frames?

I have tested a number of times and I can see frames are randomly captured from the videos, just wonder why in some videos the capture is currently almost exclusively a black frame? Perhaps Canola attempts to take an frame capture too late, as many of the samples are very short in length i.e. below 60 seconds?

By comparison for same video media, Media Box does better and has a much improved hit rate of scanning for frames of the video for the video thumbs which contain an image from the video, rather than a blank black frame?

I do like the increase in the Battery and Wi-Fi icons
I feel that the overall responsiveness of Canola2 in all areas of use is improved, switching video playback within UI, the overall response feels very much improved.
I really do like the clean UI interface of Canola when compared to other players that are available on the NITs. Keep up the good work ;) :)

What algorithm is used for selecting a video thumbnail? Is it looking for a key frame after some type of interval? If so, the black frame may just be a keyframe.

Rdcinhou : I think so, it goes to a random frame between 15-something. When integrating this we will try to improve it a little bit more, to avoid the black frames.

Just wanted to add a comment about the new picture zoom capabilities in beta 5. Really great feature which works well in finger or stylus mode, the ability to zoom all picture types and the speed of the scaling up/down is very neat. (Well thought out option as usual Handful)

The zoom feature is handy for our RSS photcasts, when only the smaller thumb images are being downloaded via the RSS feed (i.e. from Flick)

Final podcast : we do want to be the best option for podcast fans. So :
-> smart queue (add more info)
-> better organization on first screen (Latest's episodes, Current Downloads
-> figure out a way of doing a good schedule downloads

Upnp: at least a pretty good client

Developer support : at least the basic, then I will handle to miguel the task of creating a good addition of widgets to aid developers

Theme creation support : we have plans of a webserver / client application don't know yet.

of course iron bugs out in all components :)

Let's see how much we can accomplish that... But I cannot lie, I'm pretty proud of the team that I have the pleasure to be part of :) think they can really do it nicely, we just need time!

Just wanted to say thank you for this wonderful effort.

Just a suggestion when you get done with all the features like youtube, maps and all other things to be integrated why dont you do a video demo and send it to engadget. That way people will know that not only the iphone has a great interface but also the IT with the help of third party developers like the canola team. That will make lot of techies more interested in the tablet.

There has been a persistent bug, though, since the first beta, that I was hoping would get fixed here. I have most of my music in ogg format. And, when one song finishes and goes to the next, the volume goes all the way up (even though the visual representation does not show it). Effectively blowing out my ear drums when listening with headphones ;) It does not do this when I press the forward button, though...

We have been aware of this bug, and Arthur has made incremental fixes in all releases since reported, but it sometimes impossible to reproduce it here. So please, can you send some of your ogg files? We will try to kill for once, but also what you can do is to set the volume of the default media player almost to none, and tell us if instead of blowing your ears... it goes lower?

We have been aware of this bug, and Arthur has made incremental fixes in all releases since reported, but it sometimes impossible to reproduce it here. So please, can you send some of your ogg files? We will try to kill for once, but also what you can do is to set the volume of the default media player almost to none, and tell us if instead of blowing your ears... it goes lower?

This release did not find my MPEG-4 audio files, though they were found by, and played in, previous C2 betas. MP3 files in the same directories did work with this beta.

Also, after installing this beta, my tablet began freezing frequently even when no applications were running. I think it's probably just a coincidence, but my tablet hasn't frozen since I uninstalled Canola via the clean up app. (Attempting to simply uninstall Canola 2 via the Application Manager stalled at about 5%.)

This was the first I'd tried Canola since my last reflash.

About the freezing, I haven't received bugs about that yet, but if you can find a way.
but it really seems even more that there's something happening now and then in the installation (not for everyone) like corrupted packages being accepted as good by the application installer resulting on broken installations... that leads to problems.

So, did you install other applications before installing canola on your last reflash ?

I have two questions.

Is it possible to set the clock to AM/PM instead of 24 hour?

And is it possible to turn off scanning in the future? I love how it picks up on any changes in the beginning but when I'm trying to use it as a media player it's slightly annoying having to wait for it to scan. (though I suppose I could just use the built in media player). But it's nice having a beautiful GUI to show off. Especially when people are flashing off their iPod touches.

About scanning in beginning : we will do that, but the thing is not about the changes itself, it was a security check for integrity, to prevent crashes, but I do not agree with that in the beginning for everyone, so I asked this feature, so we will try to add a "Auto Scan" Off on the settings, but people will be then responsible for Canola not finding their media :) so go to settings and refresh to do it... Also, a future home applet can make this easier.

I understand your point, and I was personally against the check on start up. And it's complicated to deal with the consequences, because if things start going wrong people complains a lot and forget that they didn't want te scan at all :)

Having learned about the new beta5 of Canola2, I decided to try it and wanted to uninstall previous - beta 1 - from my N800. The answer was "Cannot uninstall canola2. Some modules are needed for other applications. Which were libecore0-evas (0.9.9.041+cvs200712200-maemo.7) and livedje0 (0.5.042-maemo1). I checked the list of installed stuff and saw none of the two libs. What is to be done to uninstall Canola?

Problem solved. The installation of Beta5 above the older Canola eliminateted the capricious Beta1 and uninstall became possible.

Tried to update Canola2 to beta 5 on my Nokia 770 running latest version of OS2006. During the "Update install failure" via application manager the following details are provided :-

Unable to update canola2
Will not install due to packages missing

OK, running the "Canola2 Cleanup" tool on my Nokia 770 worked perfectly, solved the problem and I was able to install Canola2 at beta 5 and Canola Tuning on latest version of OS2006. (The Canola Cleanup tool should be easily found in the application Manager if you have Canola2 installed already on your device)

I did need to "Hard Re-boot" the Nokia 770 after installation of Canola2 to ensure underlying elements were set up correctly. (i.e to actually playback with sound, mp3 files that Canola2 could see)

Canola2 appeared to Lock up when trying to play "Discovery.avi" (Could not traverse menu structure with stylus or hardware keys) requiring battery to be removed to close unit. (On/off button ineffective) Further testing seems to suggested that waiting for a long time, the device will eventually recover.

Therefore my personal conclusion is that Canola2 beta 5 would be fine for Music and Photos, but I would definitely not promote using it to play movies on the Nokia 770 as the combination of mplayer and Canola UI seems makes the Nokia 770 totally unresponsive. [Just use mplayer on its own as it works well ;) ]

Be aware that mp3's currently seem to take a little time to start the first track playback when you have just started Canola2 for that session (Once first track is played, seems more responsive) Photos are fine but if you attempt to use the new zoom feature (Which works well) Canola 2 can become unresponsive. (Not as unresponsive as with movies)

I also noted some problems with sound level being out of sync with player indicated level at times, which appeared to be solved by adjusting sound level in UI.

I have not tested podcasts and Iradio on Nokia 770 using Canola2 Beta5

OK, I read in this thread (http://www.internettablettalk.com/forums/showpost.php?p=147016&postcount=13) where fms commented that between running the Canola Cleanup routine and installing Canaol2 you must "Hard reboot device"

I thought hey, that's the one thing I know I did not do between removing Canola beta 3 on my Nokia 770 using the Canola Cleanup tool and subsequently installing Beta 5. Could this be why I was experiencing lock-ups and even slower response when compared to testing the earlier beta releases of Canola 2 for Nokia 770?

In the interest of consistent testing I decided to reinstall beta 5 again on my Nokia 770 making sure this time that i did a hard re-boot between cleanup and install.

It made a difference. I can now play the movie and switch between full and thumb playback. (OK we still need to wait for playback but it works) I can also zoom in/out of photos all without giving the appearance of locking up the device.

So my advise to Nokia 770/all users of Canola2 beta is to consider using the "Canola cleanup" to remove all traces of Canola2, hard reboot device, then install Canola2 beta 5 cleanly on your device. (Note its easy as App Manager already has the package links so reinstalling clean is simple)

Be aware that if you take my advise, you will lose all your Canola settings, podcasts and URL links. But it's worth it if you are experiencing problems and want to try with a fresh start. Well at least this is my experience. YMMV

I upgraded to beta 5 last night from beta3, and my podcast directory is messed up. The names of the podcasts are still the same, but the episodes in each one have become mixed up. For example, lugradio's episodes are listed under 'a way with words' podcast. When it finds new podcasts it adds them under the matching title, so then I have mixed episodes.

is there a way to save my list of podcasts so that if I try a reinstall I don't have to retype all of the urls?

@Drhal35 : we don't want at all this kind of problem, but we cannot fix things that we didn't broke. EVEN for that, we did think about people like you and did the Canola-cleanup, canola cleanup is not a installer, but if you face the "dependencies" problem on the app installer (that we have been trying to figure out where canola triggers it) then you use clean up to do ALL the command line commands that are needed to remove. Then you can install using the application manager.

So my wishlist for the future :

a) a application installer that doesn't break
b) a rock solid repository that don't send wrong messages and broken packages
c) good connection for all users, to avoid users blaming canola when they are not able to install anything :)
d) less repository madness

so we are doing our best, but if it's beyond our reach we will not be able to do much, but of course if I keep saying I want canola to be simple, it's not a purpose that is not happening. There are several types of users's behaviors that we cannot predict them all and we are learning with it... So we are behind this bug.. if this bug is our we will find it!

Just as a a further feedback - and this one is positive - on the Beta 5 install thru Application manager ...

While I had the problem of App manager not installing the beta 3 on my N810. Canola Cleanup actually solved that problem, after quite a few tries, and command line installs and all that.

So with a little bit of trpidation, I now again uninstalled beta3 (since I didnt find beta5 as an update in the update list in app manager).

I used Canola cleanup to remove it all.
Rebooted the N810
Went backt oa pp manager and installed Canola2 Beta5 and Canola Tuning.
Happy to report - everything works fine.

The photo magnify tool is great - Canola keeps getting better and better.

One request - can the podcast feature have a flag of being read - if I downloaded and listened and then deleted a podcast, so I dont mistakenly download again ?

I asked again about the saving of my urls for podcasts because it sounded like the backup utility would save the whole database, including the screwed up parts, which I wanted to have start from scratch. I had some parts of my media library that were whose id3 tags were not being read correctly, and I wanted to try a fresh install. The only thing I wanted to retain were the urls for podcasts. The reinstall did fix a lot of my mp3 tag problems. I did the backup as suggested, but have not yet done the restore. Am I correct in assuming that I will get my old broken database back if I do the restore, including ID3 tag problems?

I was very excited to see that I could stream with Slimserver after this upgrade. It runs a direct mp3 stream, and it was nice to be able to use Canola for this. I will be able to pull the Internet Radio applet off of the desktop now. (I just wish Canola saw the album/song info. VLC sees some of it on my desktop. The default IR client on the N800 doesn't.) This is a huge step for me.

I am also enjoying the zoom function in the photo viewer.

Tagging "Accents and box" issue are now fixed after updating Canola2 and following the instructions below.

IMPORTANT: To remove the "Box Character" you need to uncheck all folders in Media Library / Audio Folders and re-check again. This will cleanup all songs from your database.

1) Go to Settings Menu (Click on the Settings Icon in main menu)
2) Media Library
3) Audio Folders
4) Uncheck ALL folders (click in the eye to remove the check mark)
5) Back to main menu (you will see the "Updating Database" message)
6) Back to settings and re-check the Audio Folders
7) Back to main menu.
8) Done

Here is an example of the "box" character at start of each tag in error. (Track, Artist, Album) and an example of this issue now fully fixed in Beta5-maemo3 ;)

ok...I tried the backup and restore routine...I should have done the backup BEFORE the upgrade to beta 5 (I guess that is obvious). It restored all of my podcast urls, but it also restored the borked database issues I was having. (Podcasts episodes listed under the wrong podcast title. When it downloads new podcasts, they show up under the correct url. It also brought back some empty directories in my music that were from when the media scanner did not recognise some of my tags.)

A new issue with the scanner is that it has now decided to recognize composer instead of genre on one of my albums, so it went from being blues, to being ten different genres, where the genre is actually the composer. I still have two other albums that don't have recognized genres.

All in all it is deffinately getting better.

I may do a complete reinstall, and manually enter all of my podcasts again to clean up the mess. Not sure what else to do for that. There doesn't appear to be a way to clear/rescan the podcast section of the database, while keeping the urls. Unless anyone has another suggestion. (Decided to do a complete reinstall. I'll just manually reenter podcasts....)

I just submitted a feature request I thought i would add here as well, for those not going to https://garage.maemo.org/tracker/?group_id=125

I would like for at least podcasts to remember the position of the track upon exiting. That way if I was in the middle of listening to a podcast and paused it and exited the program for several hours, when I click the file again it should pick right up where I left off. This is the default behavior in ipods, if you're looking for an example.

Also, many many thanks for the great software. This really makes interfacing with media on the ITs many times better than using the built in software. Great job guys/gals!

Quick Feedback. Now successfully updated Canola2 2.0.0-beta5-maemo3 on the following NIT's and confirm working well on all three devices.

N800 & N810 with OS2008, Very Good!

N770 with OS2006 Great, but..

Slow to start up, not great with videos, as Nokia 770 hardware (& limited swap size?) struggle to support Canola UI and mplayer at the same time. (I tend to use mplayer on its own when playing movies on Nokia 770)

Users with devices running OS2006/2007 Please Note:

Underlying issue with filenames with accented characters in filename not being found by scanner are an issue. However as I explained in my blog post (http://mikesl300i.blogspot.com/2008/01/bulk-rename-utility-howto-remove.html) if the accents are removed from the filename (only) tracks play fine and now also supported accented tagging in version beta5 meamo3. :)

Regarding canola-tuning 0.3.0-maemo2 and Video Thumb and Album Cover. Everything fine on N800/810 with OS2008 but on Nokia 770 and OS2006 for some reason album cover does not seem to start, Video Thumb works fine. (earlier versions of album cover worked?)

---edit--- I had a doahh moment, don't forget to be connected to Internet when using album cover app to update album covers. The program does not start if Internet is not connected and does not currently give any reason why. That was my problem, everything fine on all NITs :o

after all those "problem" installations, i just wanted to tell you that since i started installing canola2 on my n810 at the end of january, i never encountered a single problem while updating (knocking on wood). I never had to to use the commandline (knocking on tree) and never had any suspicious characters on any title (shacking the entire forest :D)

I am just completely astonished how you keep this development speed still supporting "3" plattforms :confused:

Anyway the new zoom feature in the photo-section is really wonderfull, as i am a photo geek and love to zoom around to see details on pictures taken from my family. Is there a chance (i know screen only but...) to use the +/- on top of our device for a seamless / smooth zoom in / out (just like ps3 photo-browser if known). When using those buttons it would not be necessary to show the onscreen menu in the photo section so one could watch his photos without distraction of the onscreen display poping up and away while zooming. The existing zoom "steps" via onscreen should of course remain. We can use +/- for volume in music and as the buttons are not used when playing music and watching pictures (cannot change volume in picture mode what doesn't disturb me), i thought this would be a nice addition.

Ah yes and two more things: rotation left and right and perhaps remember the selected rotation / picture orientation, if it is not the default one (still have old pics from camera without sensor). As you probably store thumbs in a database, you can perhaps add this information so you even don't have to rewrite the original pic...

Not sure if it's an error: when selecting shuffle during music playback and selecting next, my song starts from beginning but does not change. Back seems to go back but not to a random song...

As always, keep up this wonderfull work, the team is always able to amaze again...

Yes, I did install a number of other applications prior to installing Canola. I suspect that either one of them broke something that caused problems for Canola or, as you suggested, the Application Manager accepted a packaged that had been corrupted during transfer.

The sdhc card for some reason never returns any valid music files on a library refresh. The last version i was using found all of my music just fine. Any ideas on how i might address this problem?

Did you check if everything is fine in other applications (just to make sure is not a "damaged" disk or something? Sometimes a small corrupted file in the disk can break us... maybe between the installation disk got corrupted... and the scanner is not able to see it. If it folder is set to watch (the V on the eye) and nothing is appearing... we will try to help you, but all other users that have reported it had some issues in the disk, or the memory not with canola.

I just updated my 770 Gregale (2006) to Beta 5 Maemo 4. I used Canola 2 Cleanup to uninstall, did a hard reboot, and then installed from the App Manager.

Before the update, I had no problems. Now, I am able to connect to my router and connection manager shows strong signal. However, I cannot connect to the net or get Gmail! I get error box stating "Network Problem" when I try to connect to a webpage and

Update: I just used Canola 2 Cleanup to uninstall Canola Beta 5. Then, I re-installed it. Now, everything seems to be working again. Weird.

Many podcast softwares have also problems with those podcasts, but Gpodder for example manage them well.

So the question is, how do you exit canola? You exit canola by using the back button in Canola (this is confirmed to work) or you actually kill canola using the task manager?

For the alarm bug you leave canola running just pause the audio. When the maemo clock alarm fires off, instead of playing the alarm sound, canola resume playing the audio track. Hope that helps.

Is my current position within a video stored on my N800 supposed to be saved when I exit Canola, and restored when I use Canola to finish watching the video?

I've set up my mythtv installation at home to transcode some of my recordings and move them to SDHC media, so I can take 'em on the go with me. If I have to stop viewing for awhile (such as, work intervenes, or something), whether I exit Canola or not I have to start watching from the beginning again. If this needs to be a "feature request", just point me to the correct place...

My understanding of how to cleanup all songs in your Canola2 database.

1) Go to Settings Menu (Click on the Settings Icon in main menu)
2) Media Library
3) Audio Folders
4) Uncheck ALL folders (click in the eye to remove the check mark)
5) Back to main menu (you will see the "Updating Database" message)
6) Back to settings and re-check the Audio Folders
7) Back to main menu.
8) Done

Hopefully this will resolve issues you have with multiple copies of a album where/when different artist have contributed to tracks on the album etc.
It seems to have worked for me and I am now happy with Maemo4 of Canola2 Beta 5 and my album art based views :)

Hi Nif : did you try the "multiple album entries?" it can fix also this problems, but we will take a look, I know it must be happening because we re-wrote the whole scanner. Is not finding more music but some old bugs could have returned.

let me know if " multiple entries" solves your problem, if not can you send 2 or 3 of the mp3s that gets duplicated? We will fix it asap if we find that is a problem.

Right now (beta5), there is no support for this feature (restore position), but it'll be there on beta6.

One thing I noticed after using the clean-up tool for the past 2 upgrades was that My N800 would no longer recognize my networked shared folders...
The only way to bring 'em back was to do a re-flash and re-install C2.
Am I unique, or is there someplace else I should be looking for a cause?

A small problem with the podcast UI:

Some podcast episodes are chopped in to many chapters not labelled by date. For example, http://www.sciencefriday.com/feeds/radio/

Over time it becomes very confusing to determine which chapter belongs to which episode. If the date of download or release were available, that would help, but there is no way to see this with the current UI.

Any suggestions for a workaround?

Let me clarify: Canola clean up was developed solely for those users who don't know how to become root / use SSH. It does the following :

apt-get remove canola
apt-get remove (canola dependencies)
apt-get update (make sure everything is in place)

That's it. Nothing more, we don't touch any thing related to networking / or the network infrastructure. We just remove a couple of things.

Of course, we could have made a mistake, but several users have used it and that's the first time we hear that. I hope it's just a coincidence, but if you provide more information, we can try simulating mounting here after a cleanup. If it's a bug of our side we will run and fix it as it's outside canola and we don't want to break others things then our own :)

I've been enjoying using Canola2, but have come across a few issues. I found this podcast, http://lenswork.com/podcast.xml, which is pretty cool, but I can't get it to play in Canola. I can dl it with canola, but it won't play. I can play it with the default media player.

I tried to let canola see it as regular audio, but it wouldn't play it that way either. Which brings about my second issue. All of the genres that appeared when I told canola to see the podcast folder didn't disappear when I unchecked those folders. Now there are empty genre folders in the list.

So, even having the answers spreads in the threads I will answer again:

A few things.

What device are you using? Did you try hitting the menu button -> paste? when the keyboard is open it should do that even in the screen keyboard.

Anyways, the newest canola tuning gives you an small addition to the browser that let you add without copying and pasting. Even if you decided to do that, it's completely possible AFAIK.

Yes, this was a mandatory thing since the beginning, but first we needed to make sure :
a. you are able to "safely" subscribe to your feeds (I think we are supporting most of them now )

b. Download manager should be trustable (it took a lot of work but it's way better for beta6)

c. DM should support queues.

After that the next would be implemeting the more needed playaback options, and bookmark the last played point is happening. It was bookmarking only if you didn't leave canola. Now it will save your position for every episode. If not available on next release (coming in a couple of days) it will be on the second (coming in 2 to 4 weeks, due to the Bossa conference)

But, it doesn't end here, and we are looking forward: after that we will include : dowload all (from a feed) pause all, schedule downloads, and more options that are in the podcast backlog.


3) When I pick a playlist to play I don't want to have to select a song as well. I should be able to just pick the playlist and hit play.


Yeah, this was "known" and Morpheuz is trying to figure out how to do it without being a hack. As we tried to create our infrastructure so easy to develop on top, the playback and the media engine still a little bit too complicated to deal with the underlying media renderes, but we will solve thi. Not only for playlist but for the "play random". Should start playing already. This is really a annoying thing (I'm a random mode guy) :)

I, and the design we use mac, and synctunes... I think the relation is not there, but maybe on the ID tags. We are improving release by release (people have noticed) and what we can do is : send us some of the files that canola doesn't find? We will add to our "test media card" and make sure it appears (not by hack of course, but finding the reason it's not coming in the scanner) send me a PV(private message) that I will send you my personal email (it's my username on gmail ) : )

Resuming : we had nice plans for it, and it was suppose to be a "task switcher" and you would understand the icon the first time you touch it. BUT we saw that in the near future the TS would not happen, so we decided to focus on the other important things, and left there only the "playing now" indicator. That helps you jump back to the playing now screen. But even that doesn't justify a button solely for that, so our plans is to transform it on a "notification area" but no plugin (but the playing) uses it now. So, it is indeed a "mistake" on the consistency side, but we are (sadly) aware of it, and we will try to fix once we get the bugs ironed out and some plugins that needs it :)

Yeah, Mike (the one I sent you the link a little bit up) talked to me for a couple of hours on messenger about that. Of course I could enter the merits of the whole device's screen sensitivity but this is not the point.

The point is: this kind of screen (I assume here) is not the best thing to do what we are doing. Why? Because you need to apply pressure and keep the pressure.

So: if you touch, (it gets a press) and when you drag up or down your finger... if the pressure you're making is lighter to the point that the screen is not "felling" it anymore.. than it will be taken as a click : / because your finger was down and up on an same position (with a small, 5pixel boundarie). We can avoid that, but then clicking would be Amazingly hard, so it's complicated.

BUT I'm not saying that is your fault because maybe you are doing "soft" presses, but it's that we (the software) need points on the screen, if you don't do them : / we cannot "guess", and what happens is that you are really not "dragging the finger, slightly pressing the screen, you are just touching it superficially on the second stage of your dragging movement : /

ALSO: there's imperfections and problems with our implementations, but I must say here, that's why canola is not running on window mode, that's why canola has animation, that's why we are trying to be really different from the other gtk based apps. Because we are experimenting, and we will for sure get thing wrongs in the way, but as people have noticed, we have been trying to improve them like crazy :)

So, please do a test using something that creates more pressure (your finger nail) or even your stylus... and see how it works (if the screen is receiveing the touches) we will try to improve it :/ but I think there will be still some miss clicks : /

The copy and paste I was having trouble with was on the n810 using the ctrl-v on the keyboard. I never though the bring up the onscreen one and use the menu based paste. It's a workaround for now.

If I'm able to recreate the problem with synctunes I will try and dd the card to an image.

I would use my fingernail, if I had any ;-) It's my nervous tick. Canola it not the only application where scrolling/clicking is sometimes hard.

I'll try a complete uninstall and reinstall for beta6 to see if the download manager gets installed this time.

Brontide, so you use other kinetic scrolling and don't feel the same right? I was investigating this, and of course some of them has small advantages (like smaller scrolling area = better speed = better feedback ) others have choose : it's easier to scroll sometimes harder to click, but for sure as I told you we will improve this :) even if we need to work hard as hell on this.

For Beta6, we will have a really complex set of changes in the core, so I would recommend you to use canola-cleanup to make sure things go well. We are a little bit more "conservative" for beta6, as we did TOO much changes (as we are approaching the support for third party) we need to make sure we don't brake too much stuff after :)

Mauku unstable version has an innovative use for this problem. It's simple and works perfect: scrolling is done normally whereas to open an item is done by means of gestures, a gesture towards the right will open an item.
It's cool and it eliminates the problem of the unwanted clicks but it's not too easy for the users to determine how to open an item.

Might I suggest that this is not a very good way to order the pics. Users will want to rename and renumber pics the way they want. Having the date override that makes it impossible to control things.

So, unless this feature is changed, I'm sticking with Quiver.

An important feature that is missing for me is that the program doesn't resume at the spot in the film where you last stopped it. Mplayer has this feature, but is a bit too primitive for me. Get this feature in Canola and it will be my default video player!

Recently I upgraded to the latest version I think and now for some reason non of my podcasts will play at all any suggestions.

I have always had a very big problem with choppy podcasts. Can anyone suggest what types work best and if I should install some other media player or something in the back end to help.

I really like the idea of Canola getting slower and slower on video playback.

@Ogar : please can you provide more info, and do one small test: without marking the " top " level card (eye) mark the eye on the folder inside the media card. It seems that we have a small issue with this top level " watch folder " : /

@drizek : This is a known issue, a small bug on mplayer. There's a "hack" to solve it, (that's why you probably can test on other plays like media box and see the video perfect) but we prefer doing the right away, we wrote a patch (contribute) to Mplayer, the maintainer accepted and is going to be integrated on Mplayer :) so it's just a matter of time.

@k4kman : Can you send some of the feeds you use? But bare in mind: the new version support many more feeds, we fixed a lot of bugs, and we are improving it a lot on this version. Still not what we aim, but its getting better (Current download, "today's episode", top rated etc, "new" label, description short text on list optional.)

About the choppy send some feeds to us, lets see what we can do :)

Wow thanks for getting back to me ok as for the choppy stuff send me a link to one you think works well as I have yet to find any that are smooth now the voice stuff is fine even with choppy video the voice is always really nice.

As for the slower and slower I found that I had added one that had about 100 days in the list and as soon as I removed that pod cast from my list it seems to have fixed the slowing down of thing as this is most likely a known bug just did not notice it before as most only show 5 or 6 in the log.

Marcelo, I have a freshly flashed N800 with OS2008. The external memory card was erased, music and video files were reloaded, and the tablet was rebooted.

Following the re-flash, Canola2 beta 5 was installed fresh. I fired up Canola2, then selected the "music" folder on the memory card, following your instructions, as the source for the audio files. Still did not work. I also re-stared Canola2 after setting the music folder on the external memory card just in case an app restart would help . It didn't. Nor did another tablet restart.

I can't think of anything else to try. Do you have any other suggestions?

Marcelo, I had this issue (that Pause, once a feature-length movie is far along, turns into Stutter Forward) with the prior release as well as with Beta 5. And I've had the problem on several movies (actually, I'm not aware of any movies where I haven't had the trouble), but never until they've been running quite a while.

As for whether I am using mplayer: I have it installed, but I don't run it when I run Canola2.

I have problems with the potcast function in Canola. I tried to use the potcast "http://static.orf.at/fm4/podcast/soundpark.xml". I can see all the songs, but I can't download it. For example the other potcast from this site is working (http://static.orf.at/podcast/fm4/fm4_projekt_x.xml).

There is also a little volume problem. The first second of the song (ogg) is always at 100% of the volume. Then it goes to the suspended volume level.

In the photos-thumbnail-view: I can't see all the thumbnails. It just show the little-gray icon of a camera. I think all this empty thumbnails are PNGs. When I click on this thumbnails it shows the image perfectly. For example: I saved the Blue-Theme-Image of Canola that you have posted in another tread and I can't see a thumbnail.

My configuration:
canola2-cleanup, ogg-support 0.6, ogg-support-lms 0.4, N800, OS2008, all the updates

To do this, you can send a dbus message to canola-daemon.
Using python it would look like this:

iface.start_monitoring()
iface.scan_all_paths()

So, it's important to call "start_monitoring" so canola-daemon start's looking for sd changes and then just call "scan_all_paths" to refresh the database.

Ah ha! Found out what files Canola chokes on... I was writing a custom sync script since Canola can in theory play m4a and mp3 which make up the vast majority of my library, the DRM'ed tracks are automatically converted, cached, and then copied over.

Every single one of my iTunes plus tracks. They show up as file not found when I select them from a playlist and they do not show up under any other browsing mode.

EDIT: Just because I know you will ask, it opens and plays just fine under "Media player".

Sorry, this bugs on the LMS caught us really badly. But everything should go back to normal, our test cases were deeply improved with files from you guys!

For my script... did the embedded album artwork show up as well? If not, what is the preferred name for artwork moving forward?

folder.jpg in the same dir as the files?
cover.jpg in the same dir as the files?

yeah, if you have the cover.jpg on the folder as the file it will be taken also.
