View Full Version : [Canola] YouTube Canola2 Plug-in
Reggie

Marcelo of iNdT gives us a preview of the upcoming YouTube Canloa2 plug-in. The plug-in lets you search videos, view by catergory, most viewed, and would even lat you bookmark videos. It streams videos more fluidly compared with viewing YouTube on the browser. This is definitely something every internet tablet user will be looking forward to. I just hope it will play the lower or higher resolution version of the videos automatically based on your internet connection speed, just like how the iPhone does it.Read the full article. Well, the plan was to release this friday, But I guess we will stop ALL features to make sure every bug is ironed out as hard as possible.
The last.fm I already tested, as able to browse some radios (we are not supporting the paid option) and did some streamings, while the scroble is on the list. So if we manage to have it "ok" until wed, you get it on friday, but my real guess is in the other friday (1st week of march? )

fredoll,
We have planned 2 big updates one before the bossa conference and one after it, but I really don't know the days exactly, but Ulisses is ironing out the bugs to provide something quite useful and easy to use. My problem is really time / people to document, but we will do our best!

HI Guys, sorry but now,
Youtube is actually the proof of the "work" of the pluginspec fredoll, and we plan to use it as the example so you will have a quite nice example.
Sorry for that, but we have some "paralell" projects (to pay the bills) and the guy who takes care of youtube is working hard on the other... but just on this 3 days, so our plan for next week still up :)

Hey, Marc!
Just wanted to make a little suggestion (you guys probably thought of it already though, usually do ;)). But, from the YT plugin, could there be an option to save the movie to the tablet? Been using different websites to do it because UKTube is not working for some reason... Thanks a lot. :)

Hi Aisu!
Actually is there already, I showed on the video :))) take a look into the 1:20 mark, there's the option already in the menu (I actually click it ) : save to disk.
There only catch is that you need to download (watch it) fully to be able to save it.
Cheers :)

I hope we'll be seeing the carman, and maemo mapper plugins that were shown off in those other videos of the nokia concept car. This looks like a great plugin that will only increase the wow factor that everyone I show it too gets, but I'd really make some sales if I could show off those other plugins. (My friends love cars, but don't have a lot of money and would love this to be a car PC).

03-07-2008, 05:55 PM
Shayne : sorry not tomorrow :/ we need to deploy to you guys first a "huge" update, then we will post youtube on the site. We are testing like crazy, since 2 days ago because the guys changed a lot of core stuff, and we don't want to "break" on the face of users that are not facing breaks like this :) so forgive us .. but again we don't want make wrong moves at this stage. (also we are taking the time to improve the youtube list of videos. as it has a lot of details, it's not as fast as we want : / )
But good news : Podcast will have a really nice set of features
Youtube save feature is working nicely!
Last.fm is "complete" with audioscrobbling (download is not supported so we don't get in trouble with the service)
Blue theme is integrated, theming "tool" is finally on the oven, Developer support is getting closer to be "ready to test" (actually send a email if you want to test it first) and several bugs were ironed out.
Let's see how it goes, but I think next week is a good week for Canola :)

Keep up the good work.

03-17-2008, 09:27 AM
@Red, yeah red, thanks for the support. The important thing is that. I know a guy release a youtube browsing application (gtk and python) and I read there " you punched canola on this one) and I really don't take it as bad thing :) we are keen on details, and for example the api used there didn't passed our tests so we did another one, and it's also going open source for people wanting to test.
People should realize (some people actually) that we are a small team, working hard, and with a huge list of priorities. So much that we admit that we cannot do everything and now we want to give others the chance to their own plugins.
youtube was " ready " since almost 1 week and a half ago, it actually took 3 days to have it running. But we respect our " future " fellow developers of plugins that we are reviewing, improving and making at least sure most of videos will play (mplayer has some issues)
So, we get criticized, but we don't care because we know that there's a few but patient amount of users that really enjoy the software and like you seems to know that we have a clear gol. We are humans we do wrong stuff (for god sake look at canola1) :) and we are improving as day go by.
The team is commited, I have probably some guys going to other projects but new guys arriving, and I think we have a long path over the year. I think that in june, we will have so much stuff done (extra) that people will really have a hard time finding " missing " features compared to others or to their needs :)
*how to do that without cluttering the ui? :) that's my personal and my team's challenge :)

I've still got only 2 complaintsf from me, and here's the firsr one, would be a great plugin to have that would either show albmum art while playing or the weird pics they do no stad-by' PC have while they are playing songs.
3. Would be reall nice if Canola could do something cool with the on-screen visiuals, I know what we talked about along ways back that with the current veriosn that it just ate p u too much cpu cycle it Is a good kit,
4. And here's mine. Am still having issues with DL fpod/vod casts from my favorit sites, I do blieve you said awhile back that it would be ready for this last thing but maybe you ran int more screen or cpu probs. I just need a nice clean way to grab my pod and videocasts (I've almost though to go back with the vieocenter. eeks.

We are planning one dinner :) but actually we are relaxing a lot in bossa conference (today a lot of great talks by Alp (webkit) Oyvind (Clutter) Raster(Efl) Cris(cairo) Oliva and Toughtfix.
We want to do this eye candy :) believe me, the thing is really time, there's so much needing our attentions (the weird bug on playback etc) that we are just posponing.
Videocast are not supported now. they will but they are not. but tells me your favotire site for PODCAST again that we will try to help and fix it!

The youtube plugin is already done, but please do the following :
(THIS IS MANDATORY FOR THIS RELEASE) DO IT IN THE FOLLOWING SEQUENCE :
1) Update or install Canola beta7 ( has the fix to allow youtube)
2) Update all the themes you use ( we uploaded new versions )
ONLY THEN YOU INSTALL YOUTUBE :
3) Install Canola-youtube plugin
IF YOU DON'T DO IT LIKE THAT ... WELL YOU KNOW :)
Then you are ready to go.

I like the 'Save to disk' option for the YouTube videos... But I notice it saves them to the ~/.canola folder on the flash disk (which could fill up pretty quick) and I missed any option to set a new default download location?
Right now I am using a symbolic link that points ~/.canola/youtube/videos to my internal SD card... Appears to work OK... But am I missing something in Settings menu?

Hmm... this might be a related question :)
I was browsing for a few youtube videos, and i ran across a 'no space left on device' error... while trying to play one particular video. So I guess the question is... is there a configurable option to set aside a particular file area/card to use for temporary space?
I looked at my disk usage, and nothing was quite filled up when I was getting the error, so I'm not sure that the actual problem wasn't something else... maybe network/latency issues? But... I'm asking the question... in case this happens to ring any bells... as to what might be going wrong and how to fix it.
all that said... canola keeps getting better with every release... been updating every release since beta3 :)

hi guys, sorry for not adding the menu to save to folders : / it was a must to have it there. I am asking the guys to write the support for it asap. Also for podcast.
Also I will make sure there's a way to avoid going to the home folder.
We just cannot "hard code" it to the removable disk because some users don't have and we want to make the simple ui (choose the downloads folder) but still if we did it test wouldincrease so much, that we decided to leave this to next week :
sorry for the annoyance : /

Also, for now, the symlink works.

cd /home/user/.canola/youtube
ln -s /media/mmc1/tmp/videos videos
(I think I did a "rmdir videos" first, to delete the original videos dir.)
Works great!!

I used these instructions from the other thread word for word and it works flawlessly.
open an x-term shell: you are in your home direcory now.
cd .canola/youtube
create a new youtube-temp-directory, e.g. on /media/mmc2:
mkdir /media/mmc2/youtube-temp
now the "crucial part": this one deletes your normal canola temp-dir
rm -r videos
and now we create a symbolic link called "videos" which points to our newly created temp dir:
ln -s /media/mmc2/youtube-temp videos
(in caps this would be LN not 1N)
after this you should be able to do a
cd videos
echo 1 > 1
and if you open your filemanager and go to the folder in which the youtube temp-files should be stored (internal mem. card/youtube-temp)
you should see a very small file called "1" now.
Delete it, as we don't need it anymore and test your youtube videos...
To revert this change:
=================
open an x-term shell: you are in your home direcory now.
cd .canola/youtube
rm videos
mkdir videos
this will only delete the *link*, so your "new" youtube-temp directory is still there and can be deleted.

Well,
1) You can be patient and wait for the next release, which will probably be pretty soon. These guys are fast.
or..
2) We can troubleshoot symlinks!!! Yeay troubleshooting!!!
Since you chose option 2, (you did, right?) we can continue...
Open your terminal program and type:
ls -al /home/user/.canola/youtube
It should look something like this:
lrwxrwxrwx 1 user users 23 Mar 20 20:40 videos -> /media/mmc1/tmp/videos/

p.s. Yes, I cut out the lines from my ls that didn't relate...

True, it's sometimes nice to know the "star rating" and/or the number of views to help select something from the list... but, it's also handy to know, without having to download it and start it playing, that what you thought was a 2-minute video clip is actually an hour-and-a-half video.

I am trying to remove the one video I saved to disk as I keep getting an error message saying there is no more space on the device. I am unable to remove the video directory as explained above because it says the directory is not empty. How do I remove the video that is in the directory. . . PLEASE BE SPECIFIC...I DON'T KNOW LINUX WELL.
Neil -- no problem. :)
Let's say you want to make your youtube video directory on your external SD card (/media/mmc1):
mkdir /media/mmc1/youtube
this will create the directory. Now, we'll move the already collected files in your canola youtube directory there:
mv /home/user/.canola/youtube/videos/* /media/mmc1/youtube/
that'll put everything you've collected so far into the new directory. Now that the directory is empty, you can remove it:
rmdir /home/user/.canola/youtube/videos/
now, just create the link:
ln -s /media/mmc1/youtube/ /home/user/.canola/youtube/videos/
when you next start up canola, it'll find all the stuff you've previously saved there, in the new directory. :)

nspeer,
Let's see what you've got in that directory. Type this:
ls /home/users/.canola/youtube/videos -al
(The -al will give you more information, and include possible hidden files/dirs)
It sounds like that directory might already be empty..

However, I just used the filemanager and found that my Memory Card now indeed does have a folder named youtube and there are some files in it.

Well,
Next, I'd ask you to do an "ls" on the original directory to see if it's empty...
Oh, wait, I did ask that. :-)
If it's already empty and those are the correct directory names (You'd find that out by doing an "ls" :-), you go to the next steps on the directions:
------------------------------------------------------------------
rmdir /home/users/.canola/youtube/videos/
now, just create the link:
ln -s /home/users/.canola/youtube/videos/ /media/mmc1/youtube/
------------------------------------------------------------------

Yes, there are spaces, they just don't show up well because of the fonts.
I'm thinking maybe a bad mv earlier might have done something.
I know you don't want to, but you''re going to have to do some ls's to find this out.
Let's start with:
ls /home/users/.canola

ls -al /home/user/.canola/youtube

Also, do a:

As for the ls, it depends on the "etc. etc".. :-)
You should see a line that says something like this:
lrwxrwxrwx 1 user users 23 Mar 20 20:40 videos -> /media/mmc1/tmp/videos/
That shows that the link is there and what it points to.
As for your df, the important ones show that your memory card is 61% used (sounds like plenty of space there) and your root filesystem (/) is 93% used.
You only have 8.1 MB free.
That's a bit tight, but as long as the link is working, you should be OK, unless Canola caches somewhere else.

p.s. The df -h is easier to read if you go full screen. You can read the legend at the top and it's all lined up and you can see what the columns are.

So, would removing un-used applications free up more space on the root file system?
desiv
03-22-2008, 08:12 PM
Yes,
Especially if you mostly went with default installs.
You can go into Application Manager and look at installed software and it'll show you what each application is taking.
Then you can choose to uninstall something from there.
One thing that nailed me when I was first using my tablet was Maemo mapper.
I put my maps on my memory card. But then I redownloaded map repositories and wasn't paying attention and when I downloaded new maps, they went to the regular filesystem. That didn't take too long to fill up my 770. :-)

WARNING, serious GEEK-NERD hint ahead!!!
OK, if you want, you can go into a terminal and type this: (It's tricky!!!)
du -h | grep [0-9][M,G]
OK, after the "-h" is a space and then a "pipe", it's available with the onscreen keyboard under "Symbols".
Basically, it will look in all the directories from your current path (should be /home/user) down and give you file sizes for each directory, but since that would be WAY too much info, we pipe it into grep.
"grep" is pretty easy to understand. It's basically the GOD of command line!!! All HAIL GREP!!! :-)
OK, what that does is show you just the lines that have a number [0-9] followed by either the M or the G [M,G].
So, you'll only see entries like:
1.0M ./.canola/covers
1.5M ./.canola
Which means my canola directory and all its subdirectories is 1.5M in size, and the directory covers inside .canola is 1M of that.
Usually, I'll do a du -h --max-depth=1 on a Linux box, but the 770 dh command doesn't understand the max-depth option. (Don't list subdirectories more than the max-depth)
(sorry, I was feeling extra nerdy and couldn't help myself. :-)

Just a heads up, in case.
If you search from xterm (I'm assuming you used "ls") for a hidden directory, you need to add the "-a".
So, to search for the canola stuff, you start your xterm.
You should be in /home/user. (You can type "pwd" to be sure.)
Then type:
ls -a
(I prefer ls -alh to get some more information.)

Hi yerga!
Daniel, this was not ask before, don't worry and it's indeed quite relevant. We already have the design, but we need to do some deeper modification on our list components (to have the last item for example) to be actually the trigger for the next page.
I'm writing this down on my spreadsheet of ITT related issues, and I will try to push in the upcoming sprints.
At least we are adding support to sort the search result but the time now is being consumed to finish the last.fm plugin, which I hope we can integrate in the next beta probably next week.

Well, I haven't the statistics of the extras repository. I haven't anything with maemo.org.
I only was pointing out the statistics are now displayed in the downloads page of every application in maemo.org/downloads.
For example, for Canola in http://maemo.org/downloads/product/OS2008/canola2
There is a "Download statistics" link. It will show a graph with statistics in the last weeks. Canola has approx. 1500-3500 downloads each week.
I don't know if there is a more complete list of statistics of those who are showed there.
Btw, my site usually fails once a day or is late to connect (especially the blog database), but is the second report I have from brazil of more time without being able to access. Perhaps it's time to move to a paid hosting.

Hei Sakamoto : something is really wrong with your installation.
To enable us to help you you must provide some information, just telling your problem is not enough for us to find out what is the problem.
a. run canola in the xterm (utillities) with -vv as argument :
canola -vv
b. Do the youtube usage, and then try the other video... send to us what is written on the terminal.
Also : send us device + firmaware + what version of Mplayer are you using.
If you can also send : all repositories that you have installed : go to the applications manager menus -> application repositories.
All of this is evidence to find the problem.
This is showing to be a really unique problem, and we must understand what is in your machine that is causing this effect.

Pardon me if these where suggested but for the youtube plug-in maybe add an option to not log history for videos viewed. Im sure this would free up a little memory and also save a few people from having their significant others from seeing their history lol
Also a scroll option would be nice for the youtube clips. Currently you cant fast forward or rewind. Im sure this is being looked into
Also maybe a subscription option for people who use that on youtube
Also allow the full screen button to function for videos via Canola as an alternative to taping the screen
BTW keep up the good work

-> History, there will be a way (isn't already there) ? to clear the history. I don't know if your "don't log at all" thing is going to enter :) even more that different from the desktop the tablet is a more "personal device". Anyways :) you can clean up before passing to her.
-> Scroll : actually you mean SEEK. Mplayer with Seek support for FLV files is coming. when it's working, we just remove on option, and the tracker appears. We tried, but Mplayer was fixing that at the time, that's why it's not there.
-> subscription is a nice idea
-> FS btn : also, but we are a full touch application :)))
Thanks for the feedback / suggestions
Marcelo
@munky : wise guy :)
Well for the history thing I noticed you can click on the garbage icon for all the clips and when eraseing a clip the erase option will disappear for some of the clips forcing you to re-click the garbage icon.
Also maybe an erase all option would be possible instead of having to do it one clip at a time.
Also im not sure if preloading multiple videos would be possible. Have an option in the plugin menu then once selected would open up a screen divided in 2 parts.
One where you can search (maybe just reuse the plugin menu for this section minus the muti option in order not to create a loop conflict. May save on programing too)then drag and drop to the other section. Once dragged and dropped the video would start downloading but not play.
Maybe have a play button show up on the videos being queued or simply tapping the video. Thus you can continue searching in one window and dragging to the other while the videos download ready to be viewed when you want.
Would come in handy for videos split into multiple parts

Fido:
Yeah, the downloading 2 videos would be something like the podcast right? We had this idea in the beginning, but this add a little bit more of burden on the design, that it would take a lot more to release. Maybe we do the "current downloads" for the videos, but for now our focus is on closing / fixing everything to "stabilize" to final version.

The Canola Youtube plug-in no longer works. It used to, but starting tonight, after I've used the plug-in to search for a file, and I try to launch it, Canola tells me that it cannot "resolve the video URL" and that I should check my connection. The problem is not my connection (in any typical sense) as I can surf on MicroB and even Canola's Youtube search function works fine. I can also download the very same video via bywifi.com or watch it directly on Youtube. I have two N800's, one of which has had nothing new installed since Youtube was working in Canola, and now they both have the same problem about "the video URL." Both have Canola2 Beta8. (I wonder if Youtube changed something that created an incompatibility with Canola. But that would be the case only if everyone is having this problem.)

I hope this is temporary, and gets resolved. If I'm forced to only watch YouTube through their web interface, littered with ads and other crap, I'm more likely to stop looking at it altogether.

I was getting the same url error with the saved files in the local videos folder too. How is the url used for saved videos?
I thought I had buggered it and spent last night and this morning troubleshooting, reflashing, restoring and groaning.

Marcelo,
Youtube now offers higher res. videos with a slightly different url.
Would it be possible to add an option to the YouTube Plugin, so that if we wished to (and were on a fast enough connection), we'd get to watch/download the high res version instead?
Thanks

@everyone : yes, youtube indeed did that.
@High-res videos : we will update the api, so it will probably have this option, but bare in mind that if it's barely playable today.. I don't believe a higher resolution will play fine in embedded mode. Anyways you can always download and try to launch via mplayer.
We will take a look at this asap. If possible we will release an update on tuesday (monday is a national holiday) :/
sorry for this delay!

@handful First of all thanks for great program. Whilst you are fixing the current youtube plugin issue, may I ask for an item to be added to your list of futue enhanements? Would it be possible to have the opption of playing the videos original aspect ratio? This will help with 4:3 format viewing.
Many thanks

HI bahbah12 :
As we always say it's a good strategy to do a smalls search before posting (this is not rude at all just spreading forum's guidelines around )
This issue has been discussed a lot :
The strecth is also due to some bug in the Mplayer embedded mode. We did a patch (fix) for the mplayer, that is already available in the preview of the next version, that also improves a lot the playback on embedded mode. So not only Canola will be with original aspect ratio but any other player that uses mplayer embedded mode.
There was an way to do it now, but it would be a real hack (opening mplayer, getting the aspect, closing it, opening again) and we like to fix the thing not hack it ;)

My YouTube plugin stop playing videos..
´Unable resolve video URL, Check your connection´ (Or something like that..)
It does list/find videos ok, it just doesnt play them and gives that error. And ofcourse internet connection works.
I have still Beta7. There is a threat about Beta8 problems so I didnt update.. And it did work ok before..
Now what to do..

Looks like others have same problem too.. It did work (for me) earlyer today.. and then stop working.. :(

this problem was reported here when it first started happening (early last weekend, I think). Marcelo (handful) replied that their team was seeing the same behavior -- it looks like youtube changed something, and the canola plugin would need to be updated. he further went on to say that this past Monday was a holiday there, so nobody would be able to take a look at the problem and coding a fix until Tuesday (yesterday).
Patience. :) The Canola development team is a good bunch of guys... give 'em a chance, and I'm sure they'll have things ironed out ASAP.

I ran into the same problem couple of days back where canola2 stopped playing local youtube videos even though it could list them. I noticed that it was doing it only for the videos I had save more than a week back while the more recently saved ones worked just fine. I poked around the filesystem and noticed that the older videos were saved under /media/mmc1/canola/youtube/videos while the newer ones were saved under /media/mmc1/My downloads/youtube. So I moved all files from /media/mmc1/canola/youtube/videos to /media/mmc1/My downloads/youtube. I started canola2 and it took a long time to start up (> 30 minutes. I stopped watching it and let it sit overnght). I assumed it was rebuilding some sort of index. After this all local videos play fine.
This sounds like just a hack but it worked for me.

ALRIGHT!!!!! The plugin is updated!! Thank you canola team! you rock!!!
I was (no joke) literally updating the application list every hour for the past two days :P
hmmm it works beautifully now! although... video playback seems choppier than I remember... oh well, it's probably just the horrible WiFi at my work. or maybe it's just me :)
anyway, thanks again!

Canola Team, Thanks for the YouTube Plugin fix to synchronise with YouTube API changes (As I understand it) which means we can stream the videos again ;-)
Looking forward to an "Canola team endorsed" version of mplayer or other which improves the embedded video playback of the YouTube Videos within Canola.
As an interim measure where I really like a YouTube video and want to show friends I find myself using Canola to search/find them and mplayer with its basic GUI to play them without the audio/video sync issues.
YouTube and Last.fm plugins for Canola are REALLY GREAT :) :)

hiho
i am a proud owner of a N810 now for almost a week and i'm enjoying canola2 very much...except of the youtube-client, which was broken...but today i found this board and the hint to the update, and now youtube is working again...(for me, the first time)
but there are still some problems with the youtube plug-in, regarding the performance...sometimes the playback is great, extremely fluently, but some videos have serious performance issues...(i couldn't discover if the problem refers to certain videos or possibly all videos)
in this thread almost everyone is quite pleased with the performance, so i think there must be a problem with my configuration...
using a N810 with OS2008, Canola2 newest version, Youtube-Plugin newest version
edit: forget following problems...
when i want to pause a youtube-video it doesn't really pause, just slowing down (and i mean veeery slow)...furthermore, is there no way to fast-forward?
another edit:
after testing several videos several times i discovered that the problem does NOT refer to certain videos, but occurs with almost every video sometimes
the problem can be "solved" by stopping the video (going back to the last window) and minimizing and maximizing canola...after doing this several times (usually 2 times is enough), the video runs flewently...
few minutes ago i discovered the same performance problem with a divx-video safed on the internal disk
so the problem is no more related to the youtube-plugin but to canola2 and my N810...

This is really strange, anyhow the performance is going to be improved with the new MPLAYER version with better youtube (FLV) support.
so, it's a non-canola related problem, but a embedded mplayer mode problem : / we are trying to help if possible.. but we need to wait for the new buid ; /

How can I make Canola recognize flv videos not saved from youtube, but from another source. I have tried moving the flv files into the folder, but that did not work. I notice each video saved from youtube has an accompanying file with it. Is that the key? If so, how do I do that for the other FLV files?

Hi Mfortnert : this is coming on beta9, but you can indeed do that if you know how to thinker with the Light media scanner, (to add a "dummy" flv plugin"
the code is open source : / we are adding this.. and all flv files will be on the library.

Hi, Handful, I've run into something with the Youtube plugin, not sure if it's a flaw, glitch or just unknown at this time.
What I've ran into is if I add a youtube rss feed in the podcast section, it seems to download them (very fast, which leads me to believe it's probably only DL a few kb) and it says they're DL and then when you click on it, it opens up with the music player and not a video player. (youtube RSS test link (http://www.youtube.com/rss/user/shoreserenity/videos.rss))
Any ideas why this is happening and is there a way around it ?
