View Full Version : Mplayer plug-in 3.50
Bundyo

Fixed, packaged and ready to use. On the Apple trailers site watch the smallest trailers possible (320x152 i think), the standard ones also work.
Changes from upstream:
* Fixed random QT rewinds sent to Maemo mplayer.
* Menu is shown on double click.
* Removed some options (codec enabling, you can do it from the conf file) from the config window since they won't fit.
* Added some Maemo specific video out and audio out options. Removed unneeded.
Known problems:
Don't open movies with too high resolution. Or have killall mplayer handy. :)
The obligatory screenshot:
http://bundyo.org/maemo/mplayerplugin/mplayerplugin.png
The deb:
http://bundyo.org/maemo/mplayerplugin/mplayerplug-in_3.50-1_armel.deb
The needed lib (you already have it if you installed xkbd):
http://repository.maemo.org/pool/chinook/free/libx/libxpm/libxpm4_3.5.6-2osso1_armel.deb
Install the lib in red pill mode.

For the tar on n800, which doesn't support -j option - do it with two steps:

tar -xf mplayerplug-in.tar

Was something wrong in my actions?

Thanks anders_gud, installing libpxm4 worked.)
Unfortunately, as Apple trailers site uses more and more h.264 now, mostly plugin hangs or renders some scratchy noise without picture. it's the issue of mplayer itself, i suppose.

I built a deb and tried some configs in the morning, mostly with no luck. I succeded to normally play an apple trailer from their site, but the playback was choppy or without sound at best. I'll try to release it today with the best default settings. Also added some hardware buttons support and the config dialog on double click (shortened it a bit, since it doesn't fit in the window :)

I got both audio and video in all the four sites i listed. Especially veoh.com, it is similar to stage6.com, one can select music video, internetTV (?, have not tried yet), youtube similar stuff. Cant seem to get any trailer working from the apple site. Although the mplayer worked alright in the above sites, they need some 'refinement'. http://www.bundyo.org/maemo/mplayerplugin/mplayerplug-in_maemo_3.50.tar.bz2
If you can't compile it, you will need to rebuild nsIScriptableMplayerPlugin.h with the idl file and xpidl (which you can build from the sources of the latest mozilla trunk. Also as i said before - you will need to reorganise the includes so that the compiler can find them.
Otherwise it should compile and run fine.
If you want to build a deb, there's a debian directory in the archive, cd to it and run dpkg-deb -b mplayerplug-in/ mplayerplug-in_blabla_armel.deb
Of course, that's after you copy the built plugins in the structure located in the debian/mplayerplug-in dir.

Can we make mplayer play back .flv flash video from youtube/google (from browser)?
Bundyo
03-14-2008, 04:54 AM
Maybe... not sure how different sites handle Flash video playback and if that can be unified.
EDIT: Some other clarification - the rewinding problem was because of QT decoding errors - maybe Apple changed the codec soon, that the Maemo mplayer doesn't support very well. The plugin was rewinding one second for each error, which doesn't fix it and happens again after that.

Wmv playback seems slower than in the built in Mediaplayer, but divx looks great. (Does Nokia use ffmpeg or some proprietary libs for wmv?)
Quirks:
-When I disable the mplayer-wmp, microb won't open the other formats (qt, mpg or divx) in mplayerplug-in and insists on asking what to do with wmv...
-Random microb crashes (could be related to messing with plugins, plugin.reg? or having debug on in config...)
Great work though!

Bundyo
03-14-2008, 07:42 AM
Native wmv9 support was introduced in mplayer lately (i think in the last year), and it works quirky even on a PC, in Maemo mplayer is worse. Nokia is using proprietary and licensed for particular devices codec in its Maemo media player, that's why they are faster.
It crashes from time to time for me too, but not too often. In fact mplayer crashes when summoned and since it is slave, brings down the browser as well.
I'll look up the other issue.

Save the deb file in the first post.

press cancel.
It asks which pill red or blue. Select red.
Then menu -->Application--->Install from file--> Select the saved deb.

Sorry, i'm outside US and can't access this content.
Mplayer doesn't have good native support for WMV9 and i think none for encrypted, so i guess that's the problem. I can try to start the internal media player if such content is detected.

I followed the instructions earlier in the thread by installing the libxpm and the mplayer plugin using red pill. I now have the different components installed in the browser and can select them, but I still can't get the plugin to work.
When I go to apple.com/trailers and click on a movie, I get a white box with the mplayer logo saying "Getting playlist" . This hangs and nothing happens.
If I double click, bring up the mplayer plugin menu, then select Play, in the white box it briefly says playing ----.mov, but then it says "Stopped".
It seems like people are able to watch quicktime movies using this plugin, did I miss a step? Thanks

I'm guessing I missed something. When I watch a trailer at apple, 1/3 of the way through the stream, it stops, if I try to click play or rewind to try to get the stream back, it jacks up my IT. By that I mean, the portion that was playing the movie stays in the middle of my screen, becoming a magnifying glass of sorts. The only way, that I've figured to get rid of that is to power down the IT. Is it just me?
Also, is there a version of the plug-in that supports Mplayer rc1 .24? Some YouTube videos using Mplayer .25+ skip. Obviously, like anyone else, i'd like to have all functionality instead of some, but I can live with it.
Plus, using the plug-in i'm still not able to listen to my comcast VM (wav files). It just sits there "generating playlist". This however, drives me nuts. Sure there's other ways to retrieve the message, but getting it from my IT would be ideal.

I don't have that lib installed on my tablet, but I stream the gameday audio fine with this plugin. Well almost fine, it kills the battery, but that's to be expected. I did take a while to get it to actually work, so I supose I could have added something else in the meantime to make it work. What I ended up doing was disabling the built in media component, and then enabling all of the mplayer ones. If it isn't working, try closing the browser (maybe restarting the tablet) and then opening the browser back up and look at the component list. I had a couple of instances where they were no longer checked (at the time I guessed that they crashed and were disabled) but after re-enabling them I've had minimal issues.

It looks like your file only includes one station for MLB, so there would be no guarantee that our teams would be available. Also, and to many this is an unimportant detail, my understanding of MLB's licensing is that mlb.com is the one and only authorized internet broadcaster. And they almost certainly wouldn't authorize another site that doesn't authenticate users and required a subscription. Now, like I said, you (and others) might not care if it is or isn’t authorized, and this is just by understanding and not a thoroughly researched fact. But it should be noted that if MLB’s gameday audio still works, it is legal and costs only $15 for the entire season.
I'll report on what I find. In this thread or the other mlb thread I mentioned that it took a couple of weeks to get it to work, so maybe it was just a fluke regresion in their web page. I haven't studied it much on my PC to see if the media is served with flash or with silverlight, which also might contribute to the problem.

06-05-2008, 05:33 PM
OK, after some research, it looks like we aren't the only linux users experiencing this issue. The trend I've seen reported mirrors my own: didn't work for spring training, then it started working, now it stoped. From what I've read, when it worked they stoped using silverlight to serve the media stream, and now they've started it back up. So I ported a version of mlbviewer instead. You can find the details in this thread (http://www.internettablettalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=20740).

Maybe someone else that has mlb viewer working could help me out with instructions ( pretty simple i´m sure) on how to install the above mentioned .deb file :)
Once again Thnx

Hello, I'm having problems with the mplayer plugin. I followed the instructions on the first post on this thread and everything seemed to go smoothly (no error messages or anything).
So I fire up the browser and go to the test sites mentioned in one of the links from the first post. The problem : the media files don't play. There's a message box where the file should be with the message "Mplayer Plugin. Getting Playlist......" Then nothing. Nothing plays and if i click on it nothing happens. A message comes up in the box "playing...." then "stopped" but nothing plays.
Any idea on what can be wrong?
Edited to make myself more clear.

Can be from the fact that mov files changed again (if you tried with Apple site) or because it was compiled for Chinook. :)

Hey!
I tried installing this app, but I have some problems with it. I am not able to install libxpm4.
I first tried using App manager in red pill mode and install from file but I get an "Incompatible application package".
I then tried apt-get install libxpm4 in xterm, but I get a different error, saying:
"E:Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (11 Resource temporarily unavailable)
E: Unable to lock administration directory (var/lib/dpkg/), is another process using it?"
Can anyone help, please :)?
Note that my linux knowledge is very limited.

You have to close app manager first.

ukki asked me to put this one in Extras, so I have done so. It's the latest 3.55 version with Bundyo's fixes and some little fixes done here. It's working in Tear as well as MicroB.

Hi guys.
Please excuse me if I have asked anything that is obvious already. I have had my n800 for only 3 weeks and in that time have almost never left my seat looking up things on this invaluable site. These things can do so much thanks to this community. Anyway I have just installed mplayer plugin in its latest version. Straight from the application manager and it seemed to install fine. I thought it was not working as a site (just.in tv) stopped showing the video so uninstalled it but it left the plug-in entry in the component list so I reinstalled it and then everything worked. God that sounds clear as mud!
Anyway I just can't find an answer after hours of looking through here so may I ask......
Is it normal for the plugin to start getting a playlist or something (eg nasa tv) and then just stop? I am guessing the format is not compatible?
Also when I watch something that requires the plugin (I used apple trailers too after see it as a test site here) is it normal for it to play ok but also save a copy of the file to my sd card? That is what is happening. Oddly the mplayer plugin test site didn't play but just saved the file and then I could play it from there.
Finally........I notice on the plugin listing here under downloads it has a configurable screen? How do I bring that up? I am using the included browser.
Thanks to anyone who can help. I am learning but it takes time. Complete Linux noob.

Probably there are incompatible sites out there, unfortunately Apple is already one of them. It doesn't work even with the Dekstop version of mplayer plug-in, so no luck there :)

Have grabbed the source for this - but before I make an attempt at compiling for fremantle - dont suppose anyone else has thought about porting this to the n900?

The main problem is that it is too old. It doesn't work with apple.com/trailers anymore for instance and most other sites use flash. I don't plan on updating it anyway.

Would it be another way to get microb to start mplayer or another player like vlc?

I installed mplayer plugin on n900 and it worked :)
Now I can play NRK nett-tv. I have to push the fullscreenbutton and the I get picture. The picture isn't fullscreen, but it works.
I had to remove .mplayer directory to get the sound to work because I got settings for n770 in there.

Why not? :(
IMHO some script here and there will never make up for a decent plug in...
Isn't it possible to improve it any further? Or is it to much up to the original developers...
I've found some workarounds and I plan to test the plug in as well.
Kevin DeKorte is working on "mplayerplug-in for mozilla". Latest patch was only a week ago...

The plugin is working for n900 and latest mplayer.
The configfiles in /home/user/.mplayer must be changed or removed for the plugin to work for n900. The settings installed is for n770.
For me noembed=1 worked best.
Have you found a way to launch it outside the web browser?
Is that what noembed does?

@bec noembed=1 in the mplayerplug-in.conf gives you a mplayer session where you can push 'f' to toggle fullscreen, 'm' to mute etc.
But I guess its something like this https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/446 you want ported to maemo.
I was just testing is on my pc as you mentioned it :D
I don't know how but it seems to work in microb as well
I taught it would need complex recompilation & stuff. Checking it out now in mozilla(pc)/microb. I'll report back later ;)

could you tell me what you did to install the plugin on Maemo 5?
On my desktop linux install I use it all the time, and it would be very useful on my N900 also.
i am not very good at compiling from source, I usually just use the repositories.
Ok, tested a whole lot of plugins ad although they seem to install properly in microb there's no go.
MediaPlayerConnectivity 0.9.3 loads ok on the pc but it doesn't stream, on the N900 it doesn't load at all.
Some porting will be necessary after all I guess...

I simply went to the plug-in's address via the browser (google it up and it should show up on the mozilla website)
It installs but it doesn't work...
On the pc it does work but I can't launch any videos, can you? what sites? what options?
I also found something that I'd like to have in microb: http://www.downloadhelper.net/
It starts a download that I can easily open with mplayer; Unfortunately this installs & doesn't work as previously mentioned.
I wrote to the developers... maybe they'll consider it.
