Wayfinder maps updated to maps of 2008, finally!! Can anyone confirm this? I saw this with a diablo fresh install.

Yes, all maps are marked as version 2008.1

I downloaded 2008.1 Scandinavia map, but I can't find any missing roads or errors fixed in Finland.
Some errors are:
- missing runway from Helsinki-Vantaa (built in 2002)
- missing railroad from Kerava to Lahti (built 2006)
and couple of smaller errors. Did they just change version numbers or are there any real improvements?

Well, the maps now are bigger in MB, spain for exemple, 192MB-244MB. Surely there are improvements. And i saw that all (i think) are now bigger.

You know not all roads make navigation maps. Some may never make a map.

Actually Google Maps have exactly the same errors. Looks like Tele Atlas is just slow updating their data.

With Daiblo instaled, I noticed that new maps were available for the UK and Ireland: 2008.1 as against my older 2006.7.
One warning: the 'favourites' seem to be associated with individual maps, rather than global across all maps. Switching from
UK-Ireland TA2006.07 143MB
to
UK-Ireland 2008.1 164MB
lost all my favourites! Fortunately, I had not deleted the 2006.07 maps and was able to find where the favourites are stored.
cp /media/mmc2/map/mapdata_UK-Ireland2/favourites.txt /media/mmc2/map/mapdata/favourites.txt
made all my favourites available with the new maps.
(Does anyone know the format of that file, by the way? I'd like to import a lot of locations from other GPS devices.)
I have notcied some changes/mprovements in the actual map data: e.g. the new A30 section in Cornwall near "Victoria Roche GBR" is now present. (I drove that section a couple of weeks ago with the 2006.7 map, and Wayfinder got rather confused as I was driving through fields!)
Simon.

Does it show side-road (roads adjoining route) names now?
Suppose I'll find out in a while - download of new map is v-e-r-y
s-l-o-w.
NIT Map always put my house location at top of road, not middle where it actually is. Mind you, Google maps is off too. If I do hybrid view (sat photo and map graphic combined) they are out by about 300-400 yards. Nokia N95 Maps are the same.
Some data screwed somewhere I reckon.

bunanson

I know it is obvious, one has to click the refresh button to see the NEW maps.
USA East 732 > 785 etc. all maps are larger except Singapore, remains 1 Mb ;).
Edit: mistakes. I think it just getting bigger maps, not more maps. My mistakes.

Wayfinder should be boycotted by all tablet users!
The only "substantial" upgrade that I have seen since I bought the navigation kit when it was first released over a year ago has been the name change from Navicore and now the addition of a green heart to the logo.
My reasoning for the boycott is not because of the $329 I paid for it only to see the price drop to $299 2 weeks later, or because 6 months after that the reduced my license from unlimited to 36 months, or for the dismal interface, customer service, and general disregard for tablet users; No, the reason for the boycott is simply because its inclusion with the OS is cock blocking any decent companies like TomTom or Garmin from entering the Tablet market by limiting their potential revenue.

Um... US East 2006 = 732 MB. US East 2008 = 733 MB... 1 MB of map and a green heart = substantial???
(+ 2.5 hours to download  )

Sure they do... notice the slang term "cock blocking". What potential market that is here has been diminished by the inclusion of a "free" cripple ware version of a navigation program. TomTom and others use "potential market" to justify expending resources on compatible versions (No quote needed. This is covered in Bidness 101 at Community Colleges throughout the land. :p )
BTW, TomTom would be a relatively easy port as they already have Linux/armel versions for the 4.3" display...
So... Boycott Wayfinder, wake the kids and call the neighbors and have them voice their negative user experiences in this thread, e-mail TomTom with this threads URL, sit back and wait for a decent, USABLE, and full customizable program for around a $100.

Um... US East 2006 = 732 MB. US East 2008 = ...
2008 has almost ALL maps increase in size.
2008/2006 (in MB)
USA East 785/732
USA West 726/685
Canada 77/75
Germany 307/297
....
As I quipped in earlier post, Singapore is the ONLY one that the number does not change; probably because she is so pettit :)

I do stand corrected. :) The USA east is not updated on their web site yet and I refuse to download to the device for the reasons you mentioned. Wake up and find an abortion...
But still a wopping 7.2404371584699453551912568306011 % increase in map information, no customer support, and no presence in our community...
I got a green heart on though :D

I guess if I had paid money I'd be upset too but alas I didn't and so far don't see the point. Old paper maps were suitable for finding my way and this plus the other map apps simply makes those old maps more pocket size. I don't think I need whatever else it provides as a paid feature.
But I updated the maps anyway just to see what has changed. Still no Iceland, the whole country doesn't exist apparently. Those paper maps, google maps, and sat maps work as well as they always have.
still ain't lost.

and BTW the 2.5 hours I quoted earlier was for downloading to the PC from their web site. Turns out the web sites maps were still 2006 versions. Has anyone successfully downloaded the USA West 2008 image? I tried two times yesterday (and last night). Both ended in 'download failure'. What was strange was that both downloads seem to fail in the middle of the download. I had ~380MB out of 726MB of data written to my internal storage card both times. Just want to see if I am missing something (like a timeout event)???
Also, it is PAINFULLY slow!!!! First attempt took me close to 4 hours to get to the 50% mark!!!

Just a guess, may not have ground. They need 2X the size of space for the download to work. So, for a 786 mb map, you need at least 1.5 G for the dl to be successful. just from experience from dl 2 yrs ago.....
bun
I just did download/update USA-East yesterday successfully. I had to delete both east and west maps before to free enough space... (I also have Scandinavia maps installed.)
Now I need to figure out how to download the west maps... Likely I need to copy the east maps temporarily to PC or external memory card...
EDIT: Did download the West maps. I had to move the Scandinavia maps to external memory card to free enough space. After doing that no problems at all.

Yep, that was what I was thinking as well. I deleted all map data and started a new download. This time I was able to get the USA-West 2008 image (after 3+ hours). HOWEVER, after it extracted the map data and installed the map Wayfinder no longer worked. When I opened the app it would dispaly the green-heart splash screen and then it would just exit. No error message or anything!!!
So...I maually deleted all map data again, re-flashed diablo (probably not necessary), and started a new download. I won't know for another 4 hours if this worked or not?
Anyone else had similar problems???

Even if the size was the same they might have improved the coverage.
Sometimes roads disappear and new ones appear.

Now if only the USA East maps would complete the download, and Wayfinder would lower their subscription fees to something reasonable.

My internet service provider is Comcast... Apparently Comcast has a habit of throttling downloads it thinks are somehow illegal. This could have been the case with me and my attempts to download USA East. I had 3 overnight attempts without success.
Then I decided to try opening the Comcast homepage on my tablet first then opened Wayfinder to download the map... I was successful after only 2.5 hours this time... go figure.

Once the map download failed, you are doomed. I had to delete the map folder *and* reflash the N810 before I could download the USA West map. (I haven't added the USA East yet.) USA West took 2-3 hours.
sounds like there are a whole lot of people downloading those usa maps.
but still, having to reflash just to get download going again? im guessing thats more a case of the app not telling the user that its having a temporary problem connecting, and the user going fully overkill because of that lack of info...
more likely then not the reflash to just enough time for the number of connections on the download server to drop...

I tried 4 times without success. The last three with a clean map folder. Everytime, all 700MB had successfully downloaded and it failed on the installing map step. The N810 was left with an unknown map in the list.
Initially, I did not want to believe cryptoboy. But after four failed downloads, I had no option but to try reflashing again.
It could be just luck, but then finally it worked after reflash.

once you download it on the PC, unzip it and move the whole folder mapdata_XXXX into '\map' directory on your memory card.
it works for either internal or external on N800 (not sure if you can move it from the internal on N810 to the external, search here for answers)
the last map you used in the application is stored under "mapdata" folder if its the older one you can delete it or rename the directory.
basically you can have all the different maps in directories like
"mapdata_Singapore"
"mapdata_XYZ"
but once you select it in Map application, it will re-name that directory to just "mapdata"

The A-GPS seams to have worked for me.
I've been traveling to various points between London and Manchester over the last few days and have consistently always got a lock within a maximum of say 1 minute or so (sometimes much quicker). Even when doing 70MPH on the motorway before switching Wayfinder on. Prior to this, it typically took several minutes and sometimes took 5 to 10+ minutes when moving at speed on occasions.
To answer someones earlier question about how often it connects to "refresh" when location has not changed. during the 5 days or so of using it (at least on 3 or 4 days, probably started Wayfinder at least a dozen+ times including playing around) after the initial update it only tried connecting for an update the once. so it is not "every time" that's for sure. and you can "usually" still expect a fast connection even if the mobile is not available.
That's my experience of it anyway.
Now could someone give an idea of the amount of data it needs to fetch as well ?
I too am curious as to what the cost of using it abroad would be...

After reading through these threads on Wayfinder (2008 under Diablo), I can declare that I am not impressed!
For all the trouble it's been trying-and-trying-and-trying to download either US map to review for completeness, my time is much too valuable to keep this up--especially at the price that they want for the license.
I bought a TomTom ONE for my wife and it is 100x better than Wayfinder in terms of functionality, ease of use, etc.
I don't think that Wayfinder is worth it even at 1/10th of the price of their license!
UPDATE: I finally got the US West map to download--it took overnight. I had to change the CONNECTION settings to be ALWAYS ON instead of time out after 10 minutes.
QUALITY EVALUTION: I did three lookups on areas that I'm familiar with and found NUMEROUS ERRORS (bad street spelling, wrong street intersections, showing streets as through-streets when in fact they are dead-ends, etc) in THREE TEXAS CITIES (Houston, San Antonio and College Station). The map data that comes with this application is not worth the money.
Their documentation says that they rely on their customers to help them correct the maps. They should change their business model to give substantial discounts to customers based on how many errors they report instead of making them pay great sums of money for poor quality maps.
After downloading the USA East and USA West maps, Nokia Map could nolonger route from the New England area to Florida. It would make several attemps but decide it was unable to find a route. Also, I am very disappointed in the inability to route between maps.
I had the opportunity to test Nokia Map on a 400 mile trip, and I was very pleased by the interface. I was very impressed by the display of information, the timing of voice prompts, and the speed of recalculating routes. However, the licencing is too expensive when compared to other available products.
I really want commercial grade navigation on my N800, but until the price comes down I will stick with Garmin Mobile XT on my N95-3.

I agree, from what I can gather here I won't be buying a license for the map app. Yesterday, Amazon was selling a far superior gps for $88 shipped free. Even though it would be nice if the N810 could be that all-in-one device for traveling, its still not there yet and the Wayfinder GPS is the show-stopper for me.
I'm seriously considering getting the $88 GPS and downgrading from a N810 to a N800. Combined costs would be similar and overall, the two devices would be more useful.
I like Nokia products, but they need to re-think their business plan. Why did they get into bed with Wayfinder? Why add WiMax when they could have upgraded the memory/processor, hardware for better performance. Nothing is more frustrating then using a device that works halfway.

ive got the previous version of the map app installed running the updated maps...maps and nav work fine but it isnt letting me download voices...can someone tell me how to fix this or send me the file for carinna du plessis (english accented woman) ????
Thats British, if you want female/American try Sara.
If the map data is saved on Ext2/Ext3 then it has some problems with CaSe SeNsItIvItY. I experienced this today. This solved it:
# cd /media/mmc2/map
# ln -s navicore Navicore

So, just to verify before I download the USA map from the website rather than from the Nokia which can take forever; the U.S west map on the Navicore personal download is 718MB's. My 2006.1 map for the U.S West map on the Nokia states 685mbs. The available updated map on the nokia 2008.1 is 726mb's. Is the one on the Navicore website actually updated because the numbers don't match.
Any ideas?

I don't understand all the complaining about cost. I downloaded the West map and it's great. My total cost outlay: $0. The amount I intend to ever pay: $0. I will mainly rely on Maemo Mapper. Its cost: $0.

I tried downloading the USA East map onto my device, it seems installed, since I can use it, but when I try to search for an address, it keeps coming back to me as address not found, more like "Can't find (number), try (same number) instead?". I also tried zooming down all the way into the map, I can't see any local roads at all.
Is it that my maps are corrupted or something? My Canada map works fine.

They've added a map for NZ (as part of Aus & NZ) which is fantastic for me!

sorry to come late to the party, as I discovered the wlan timeout problem the hard way after trying for a couple of days, downloading maps overnight it would always die near the same amount retrieved. the different between each attempt being how long I played with the tablet before putting it down and its subsequent automatic disconnection. told it to never timeout and (after a very long time) it did it!
the other gotcha is that, on an n800, it will download to the internal card whether or not there's enough space. you can exit wayfinder, move the maps folder to the other card and it will detect the new location automatically.

Do you have a link to this? Invariably the really cheap standalone GPS/mapping units I've seen get really poor reviews... and they're typically made by some anonymous Chinese company that will provide *zero* support and no map updates *ever*.
That being said, I wouldn't pretend that Wayfinder is all that great, but it does get the job done for me -- I've definitely gotten my $200 worth out of it (bought it way back, $200 included the Nokia GPS receiver too), and love having a single device (my N800) that works for navigation, web browsing, eBook reading, and movie watching (my main activities with the device).

Would anyone be kind enough to upload some voices? I have been unable to download voices of the server. Thank you.
My missus likes the default American voice, she giggles every time he says "..at the traffic circle..".

Unzip this in your map/navicore/sounds/sound_eng directory.

Yes I know the audio is clipped. The audio has been boosted 12dB so you can actually hear it while driving.

(living in England its known as a roundabout and theres lots of them):D :) these anecdotes are priceless! I don't remember having this suggestion before, but for the record, it'd be nice to compile a (wiki) database of such if occurs more often.
The first time I heard about a roundabout I thought "what? around and about?".

Well, these maps are nearly one year old. The Central European one has many mistakes (the same as the old 2006 version had!). Any news about map updates? I still feel I wasted money on this stuff. If I knew it was so useless, I would have sold my (originally lifetime) Navicore license before using it and cutting it down for only three years :S

I want to warn anyone who hasn't yet performed this upgrade... After I upgraded my maps from the 2006 version included in Diablo to the new 2008.1 versions available on the Wayfinder site, I noticed two unhappy things.
First, the new maps don't appear to be materially different from the old maps as far as I can tell in my area. They are still no later than 2002 and do not reflect the many traffic pattern changes in my area that have occurred since 2002. OpenStreetMap (available in Maemo Mapper) is MUCH more accurate, reflecting changes in traffic patterns that happened less than 6 months ago.
Second, the new Wayfinder maps do not have any WiFi POIs. Granted the old WiFi POIs were seriously out of date, but the new maps do not have any WiFi POIs at all. So if you use your Wayfinder Map application to find WiFi hotspots for your IT, you may want to think twice before upgrading your Wayfinder maps.
And finally, I wonder whether the disappearance of the WiFi POIs is causally related the appearance of "Boingo" as a pre-installed app in the 2008 OS? Did prior Maemo releases have Boingo pre-installed?
