What to install fist - kernel modification or boot modification?

I want to install two things on Nokia 770:

1) Modified initfs with onscreen boot menu and usb network recovery
2) Support for SDHC cards and higher SD/MMC speeds for Nokia 770

Which i must install first?
I presume, boot (1), and modified kernel (2) later?

You can get at it either way; they don't interact.

DISCLAIMER: I only have an N800, not a 770. But I'm pretty sure it matters no more there.
