View Full Version : Forum upgrade and new minimalistic theme

Reggie

I just finished upgrading the forums to the latest version to bring in security fixes as well as enhancements. This is a major upgrade so I would appreciate that you all report any problems you encounter in the forums.

Also, with the help of andrewfblack (http://www.internettablettalk.com/forums/member.php?u=16237) (thanks andrew!), a new Minimalistic theme has been added which makes it easy to browse the forums on a mobile device. It's not perfect but the common features of the forums are working well. Report any problems you encounter on the new theme as well.

Thanks..

A few issues I see with the new minimalistic version.

No Thanks button
No advanced edit / Quote
The main page is missing the "New Posts" search hiding under quick links
No way to see, at a glace, what threads you have posted on

The theme seems like a huge advance in terms of using the forum on the NIT, but without these items it's hard for me to use it on a regular basis.

looks quite impressive, altho i seem to be missing a reply/quote button...

oh and maybe a thanks button :P

err, kinda redundant ;)

just noticed that on the "new posts" page, the link to the threads go all the way over to the post count. this makes it had to drag to scroll as what looks like empty space is really a link to a page...

hmm, also just found that the post count number takes one to the first unread post in a thread. now if the background of that area could maybe change if one have posted in a thread it would cover my minimum needs.

Yes, clicking on the post count will go to the first unread post, while clicking on the thread title will go to the first page.

The wiki seems to be broken, and as Tso pointed out, the thread title links are full-width. Also, the pagenav links don't fill the entire td, making them a little tricky to click on.

I can fix the latter, though, with:
.pagenav td a { display: table-cell !IMPORTANT; width: 30px !IMPORTANT; height: 100% !IMPORTANT; vertical-align: center !IMPORTANT; text-align: center !IMPORTANT;} But I know that's not doing it right, and I really didn't understand what I was doing when I wrote that.

Oh, and I can't edit my post to mention that I do like it! And I can't thank you either... Oh, well, back to Classic for such rare tasks. ;)

I think the N810 V2 theme needs to have it's profile section updated.

I want to thank reggie for giving me credit on this we both worked hard on it. I will talk to reggie about adding thanks features and such, i knew there would be some problems since there was just the two of us testing it. But i would say it runs faster on my tablet then any of the other templates so far. Thanks again Andrew

Looks great. One thing I miss though is 'New Posts'. I prefer that to browsing through individual forums. Talking of which ..one thing that has always bugged me about 'New Posts' is the search-spam block preventing me from bookmarking the link. Couldn't some kind caching make this block unnecessary?<edit> hmm... bookmarking seems to work work now </edit>

The New Post link is under the Quick Links I was trying to keep as little on the main layout as possible.

This new theme is quite good and likeable - maybe no quite as fast as the original "mobile", but certainly less barebones and very usable on the tablets. Nice job !

maybe one should put a arrow or something there to indicate that its a drop down menu?

tso
07-31-2008, 11:03 PM
two more.

1. the quick reply box is a bit small and seems to be missing a scroll bar.

2. the "last post by" under the tgread title shows the nick of the thread starter.

iamthewalrus
08-01-2008, 04:12 AM
A couple more things I noticed:

The topic-title-links cause me to click by accident when scrolling through them, because the link is wider then the actual title. I think it should be visible which pixels are a link and which aren't, and leave some space horzontally for scrolling by dragging the screen.

I think some vertical space in the topic lists can be saved while still keeping the links finger friendly.

There are now two links per topic to go to the last reply: the arrow-icon and the number of replies. You could save some space by leaving out the arrow, and that would also minimize risk of clicking that instead of the OP.

The italics of the quotes makes them less readable. I think color/backgroundcolor and maybe some kind of quote marks would be enough to indicate that it is a quote.

You're gonna think we really hate this theme, but we honestly don't! One more nitpick: Attached images are displayed at some tiny (portrait-friendly!) size; that's good, but I can't find any way to view one fullsize on the N800. I know this is partly due to Microb's deficiencies in the context menu, but still, could the image be/be captioned with a link to the image?

Sorry for replying late - I was on a sudden 1 week vacation.
My download problem seems to be on every attachment, I first noticed it in this post:
http://www.internettablettalk.com/forums/showpost.php?p=208486&postcount=1
when trying to download the attachment:
http://www.internettablettalk.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=2206&d=1217388119

I can't download it through a firewall which checks for Content-Type, but I can download it if I go through a proxy which doesn't check for this. Using curl -I to check the http header (via that proxy) shows this:

I believe this used to be x-debian-package or something like it, before.

I really, really like the new minimalist theme. It's FAST! It is far more readable than Mobile, which was my previous choice. I'm finding that I don't have to hop back to Classic as much. Great Job!

* The search actually works and has all the features!
* The post count is nice

Classic is just far , far too slow on my n810 to use.

Benson noted this:
Attached images are displayed at some tiny (portrait-friendly!) size; that's good, but I can't find any way to view one fullsize on the N800. I know this is partly due to Microb's deficiencies in the context menu, but still, could the image be/be captioned with a link to the image?

I second this suggestion. It's a tease to just see a tiny image.

Could we also have an option to "subscribe to thread", under Quick Links? I like the idea of the Quick Links button, lets load it with more options.

And in user CP, could we have all the options such as "all subscribed threads"?

IMHO, the idea behind a minimalist theme would be simple text-based links, no images for buttons, no fancy fonts, but retain as much of the functionality of Classic as possible.

Lastly, if we can't have buttons for the various tags when doing quick reply, perhaps a legend for the most popular tags?

Thanks,

$teve

Hmmm- not sure we are talking about the same thing.
In regular theme - when I look at the front page (new posts) and select a thread - it jumps to the last position it was in when I read it last. Fx. if the last time I read the thread was on page 10 - this is where it "picks up".

Minimalist theme does not do this when I click on a thread under "new posts".

Benson

Don't click the thread title in minimalistic; click on the number at the far right; that takes you to the oldest unread post.

you dont exactly click on a thread as click on the marker next to a thread.

I like this theme; ironically, the theme's well done UI approach highlights a few issues with the microB. Nevertheless, when on the IT, this will be my preferred version. Its simple and to the point, which is how I like to read things here.

Only small thing I'd change is that the Quick Links tap-and-drop-down should have larger items to select to keep with the design of the rest of the skin.

Great work!

Hey for the guys our there that want certain functions out of the minimalistic theme that isn't there. I was thinking about it the other day and all the functions are there and most of the pages are setup to look decent on the Tablet in Minimalistic form. Some have not been modified to make links bigger or anything but they are still then and formated in a minimal way. There just are no links for them, unless we can get Reggie to add them under the Quick Links(Hey hasn't returned my PMs in a while) just bookmark these links.

Subscribed Threads (http://www.internettablettalk.com/forums/subscription.php?styleid=10)

Vaispy (http://www.internettablettalk.com/forums/vaispy.php?styleid=10)

Member List (http://www.internettablettalk.com/forums/memberlist.php?styleid=10)

In fact just add ?styleid=10 to any page and you will see the minimalistic form of the page. I hope this helps people find the Minimal theme more useful.

I'm no longer updating the theme anymore Reggie is, I'm not sure why it wouldn't work one thing you could do for a fix until you get a chance is to bookmark the pages you want to go to then go to minimal theme and use bookmarks should stay in minimal theme if not add ?styleid=10 to the end of every bookmark. Not a real fix but it will get you going atleast.

I can't quite put my finger on it but it feels forboding to me... if I were a new user and stumbled upon it I'd be confused as hell. Maybe I'm just used to the old awesome dark grey theme but I'm not fan. Is this whole maemo.org thing part of the forum upgrade?

(Mixing developers and Aunt Gretta who just got her tablet for xmas is going to be chaos, watch.)
