Some application you installed is causing this. Disable your latest additions and activate one by one until you can identify which is the one.
In my case, I used to have problems with alarm support in Large Status Bar Clock. I disabled the alarm option and everything worked fine.

thanks man i will try that...
Also got this several times. It looks like the whole desktop has crashed, and then is restarting but only partially.

Yep, a plugin caused it to crash.
If you want, you can recompile hildon-desktop from source and remove --enable-safe-mode from the debian/rules and then, the desktop plugins will reenable themselves on a crash but if you have a dodgy desktop plugin, the desktop will naturally crash loop :/

There is a related bug 2612 https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2616 Nokia has confirmed that this is an "internal" bug, but it will not be fixed for Diablo.
It is a known problem, unfortunately we have to wait until the next release (at a minimum) for it to be fixed.
I hope this helps,
Craig...

when hildon-desktop crashes only the default applets show on ur desktop/statusbar. Just go to settings => control panel => panels and just hit ok and everything should restore itself
