That appears to be just an updated Software Update Wizard for Windows - OS 2006 has not been released (suggest you change the title for this thread).
The link to the Wizard itself doesn't appear to be working on that page either - this (http://europe.nokia.com/files/support/global/phones/software/Nokia_770_SW_Update_Wizard.exe) is a working link.
In addition, you need to install Windows .net 2.0 before you can install this new wizard. :(

Invicta is right. The new Update Wizard download new 2006 OS.
I just installed it. It says:
Internet Tablet OS 2006 edition
Version: 1.2006.26-8
and there are no "BETA" texts on the Home theme.
Can't see any obvious changes.
There is a "Speed contacts" applet at Home,
but I I'm not sure if it's new.

There's been no fanfare... seems very bizarre on Nokia's part to be releasing OS 2006 without any song and dance - are you sure you're not downloading the Beta OS 2006?
Would prefer a direct link to the firmware if possible, mainly because I don't want to have to keep re-downloading it if I flash multiple times (the page for the "manual" update doesn't exist so I assume it's possible to update from a local file once a download link becomes available). I'll try updating later this evening.
If you've updated already, what's does "Version" now say in Tools->Control Panel->Device->About product? For OS Beta 2006 it says "0.2006.22-21" (and also says BETA in the bottom left of the task bar and again in the system tray). Do you see "BETA" on the home page of your newly updated 770?

Oh my god...my appologies to invicta. This IS the NEW 2006 OS. I'm downloading it right now. You have to download the wizard...and the wizard will guide you through downloading the OS. My appologies again....It seem that you have to update from nokia...you can't download it to your computer...at the moment. The new OS version is 2006SE_1.2006.26-8
Oh and I guess Nokia did deliver as promised

There are instuctions to manual download at http://tableteer.nokia.com, but I can access is only with my 770. I get redirected if I use Firefox from my computer. According to tableteer support, firmware will be available at http://maemo.org/downloads/nokia_770, but it is not yet there.

That is really poor - there has been no feedback from Nokia on bug #621 (https://maemo.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=621), makes you wonder why we bother testing for them (and in this case, even providing a solution).

I haven't seen it yet, but it sounds like they listened to my (and probably others') suggestion for a Nokia-endorsed (and -supported) software add-on site. This is a better idea, in my opinion, than just stuffing all of the software that they can into the flash image. For example, instead of pre-including an eBook reader (like FBReader), users that are actually interested in reading eBooks can add it onto their device, saving file system space for those users that don't care about eBooks.
Is there an Application Catalog for this? Hopefully there will be...

OK seriously. What is this? Besides the 'Here ya go - - just kidding!' approach Nokia took with this, nobody can complain about bricking their tablets if they're sneaking in the back door and picking up the goods. For once I'm going to exercise some restraint and stick to the Beta for the time being. I don't believe that a few weeks was nearly long enough for a proper bug-fix cycle given all the issues I've noticed (crashes, connection mgr not finding any APs after being in sleep mode, complete lockups, less responsive mini keyboard, etc).

WOOT!
I dont have a WiFi connection where I am, so, I cant test Google Talk or the browser yet.. But the beta worked perfect for me, so, nothing bad to expect here.
Good things so far:
They fixed the video player. :) I'm really, really picky when it comes to the video player, so i'm glad they did a good job here. I'm watching full-screen, TV-quality, paper-smooth 30FPS, high-bitrate MPEG goodness here played directly off the MMC card. Glitchless!
For the unbathed, always encode with low resolution and high bitrate. You'll manage about 120MB per hour of video... Thats like 8 hours of video on a 1GB MMC card.
Bad things so far:
Still contains a really, really weird list of cities to choose from when it comes to the clock. How many people do you think live in Andorra, versus Phoenix or St. Louis?
Fonts are still too damn big. But thats what themes are for. :)

Have to agree - the beta was remarkably short lived (5 weeks?)
Note sure if this happens for others, but after restoring my backup (settings and bookmarks) from the Beta OS, if I reboot my 770 (which is running the "final" image) the word "BETA" appears in the system tray for a few seconds, then disappears. It's a minor bug, but irritating and once again raises a question mark about Nokia QA...

I think that Nokia did the right thing by fixing some of the bugs and releasing it. Even though it's not tottally "fixed". I rather they keep their word and do what they said than pull a Microsoft or a Sony. That is delays, delays, delays. This way, we can enjoy what has been fixed and I'm sure they'll continue to fix those reported bugs.

Yeah, it might suck for users with 2GB cards that they have to use two 1GB partitions, but personally I'd rather Nokia didn't rush in a kernel patch a week before the final release! Software testing takes time and last minute "small" changes always cause the most pain.
Glad they held off - introduce it at a later date.
Cheers,

Yeah, it might suck for users with 2GB cards that they have to use two 1GB partitions
The problem is actually worse than that - you can't use a MMC bigger than 1GB period. No matter what geometry or partition size.
I'd bet there will be a new kernel (for the impatient) available within the week that will solve this problem.

My god, why on earth would you want 1 GB of swap space!? :)
I don't use swap at all, and I have very few problems, usually when I have the javascript-enabled gmail open in a browser (that's why I usually use the javascript-disabled version - much lighter!).
64 MB of swap should be enough for everybody. :)
dattani98
06-30-2006, 06:12 PM
I wouldnt want to use 1GB of swap! But 128MB would be ideal. This is what I had before and my unit hardly ever crashed. I've kinda got used to that!
Besides - what's good for one person wont necessarily be good for another. Its nice to have the option to select VM according to ones needs.

You're right of course - a last minute change can (and usually does) result in more problems than it's worth.
Unfortunately anyone with a 2GB card has 2GB of memory they can't use at all. :(
The frustrating thing is that the bug/enhancement is receiving no attention from Nokia, so we don't even know what their plans are for the future. If they posted a comment along the lines of "Taking ownership, too late for initial release but will patch into a later update" then great. Instead, chuff all. Not good.
(Oh, and Opera [OS 2006 release] just died on me for no reason while browsing this site - bah!)

Yup, but does anyone remember the old rule of thumb for swap - 1.5 times the amount of memory? Just a WAG, but I'd bet you've probably never used more than half of that 128MB swap.
BTW, I think the comment about 1GB swap is a poorly worded statement on Nokia's part. The text in question reads:
"Option for extended virtual memory (RS-MMC up to 1 GB)"
I suspect this is really supposed to be two different lines of specifications, and wasn't intended to mean 1GB swap is possible - just that (a) you can have virtual memory, and (b) the 770 is limited to 1GB MMC expansion.

Don't bother. I tried it too, and it seems this is a new way to brick your 770. It's never crashed like this before (screen fades to white).
Hopefully a new toolchain will fix this.

Yeah, but it's not just this - it's well known both outside and within Nokia that the bug-handling process is sub-optimal.
At least it's (slightly) better now than it was back in November.
For example, if anyone raised bugs on the beta: are they fixed in the release version? If so, I bet there's no movement on your bug in bugzilla :-(
