I could not install Canola 2 Beta 10 on N800 with latest OS 2008.

In the application details, it says, Application packages missing:
canolad (>=0.1.4-maemo1)
pyhthon2.5-efl-core(>=0.9.9.043-maemo1)
python2.5-terra(>=0.1.8-maemo1)

Any help?

Update:
Canola2 Beta 10 can now be installed from extras-devel repository.

Correct versions for this release:

canola: beta10-maemo2
youtube: 0.2.0-maemo1
last.fm: 0.1.2-maemo1
tuning: 0.2.0-maemo1
upnp: 0.1.2-maemo1

Some people reported problems in installing which seems to be fixed
after removing the directory /home/user/.canola

Actually we like the Canola a lot :), and have been waiting for the last five days for beta10 after reading the news on maemo.org. It appeared in the app manager today so I was eager to install it.

Good idea. Canola was great when it started to support OGG. I was just starting to enjoy Canola+OGG when Diablo came out and broke everything.... so I can't wait for Canola2 b10 to come out, even though I have discovered new found respect for YouAmp ( http://maemo.org/downloads/product/OS2008/youamp/ ) in the mean time.

About the ogg issue, we're working to provide the final solution for it... We didn't have time to do it by the time we released the beta9 for diablo. That was a big mistake... I really apologize for that folks.

you can also now turn of the "startup media check" this will make the loading time solid even with big media cards (bigger than 8 gigas). So startup time will be consistent from now on

There's improvements on youtube plugin (you can paginate the searches, see comments, log in to your channels)

Lot's of improvements to the core, as we are going to release the source we want to make sure things are in better shape, so you going to notice the improvements.

I am also preparing the roadmap for the next betas, and maybe we will finally get to the point I was considering to release canola as "final" :)

svu, agreed. Being able to switch off the start up media check will be great, it takes a while (although not too long) with my 16gb card. Also, I like seeing updates to the core most of all. Having a very stable player is definitely the most important feature of all.

Wow, somehow the way comments are presented in the updated YouTube plugin makes the experience even more surreal than the normal YouTube commenting. Every comment is on a menu with the first little bit as the title. Click on the title and the comment opens up in full. Pick your poison kind of thing. The part that makes it all really strange is how the comment becomes the center of attention instead of a little distraction beneath a video.

0.10 is working great for me. The multiple album entries I had dealt with earlier were reverted to all being separate albums, but that was fixed pretty quickly.
The 60 second science podcast works now. Yay!

Quick note for the uninitiated: Your settings are stored in .canola, so that will kill your list of podcast feeds, media directories... that sort of thing. .canola is stored when you run the backup tool, but probably the safest way to poke at this kind of fix without permanently losing settings is to just rename .canola to something else.

1. Would it be possible when in "Play random" mode to be able to switch instantly to play the album of the current song? If I listen random songs, I suddenly decide I'd feel like listening the entire album of the current song - I have to get to "Albums" list, find the one, turn it on etc... Not comfortable.
2. Would it be possible to provide a button "display all mp3 tags (and full path perhaps?) of the current song".

Hi, thanks for a great update.
I still have a problem with the covert art update : it stops when it encounters accented characters (éèà ...) in the album title (at least).
It suppose the plugin crashes in the background but Canola wontinues without problemo ;)

The flickr plugin won't work with this release. We've changed some bits within our infrastructure which demands some modifications in the plugin package. I've asked the plugin owner to take a look at it in the Canola-flickr thread. Let's hope he finds some time to do it.

Update seemed to go well.

Don't see a lot changed but performance seems to be improved. Two things I noticed though:
1) There seems to be a grumbling/low frequency popping sound that now comes through my speakers when Canola is between songs. During song playback it is fine but when song is done or paused, I hear a grumble that was not there in previous versions. It is not noticeable through the internal N810 speakers but when hooked up to external amplified speakers. **** Sorry ... my bad ... this has nothing to do with Canola as it is there even when Canola is not loaded. It is just the USB charging that I am doing that seems to be causing a lot of line noise. ****

2) In Cover Art 2 row view, I used to be able to scroll through the albums by dragging along the bottom of the screen beside the back button but now that area is dead. I used to do that to avoid accidental selection of an album. Admittedly, after playing with it now, that accidental album selection is much improved so it may not be an issue. I was just wondering if that was intentional.

I have all the latest plugins. WHen i start canola i only see audio, photos and settings. There is no last fm, youtube, upnp.
what do i do?

I am in the identical boat. I think being able to run canola cleanup would solve the problem. However, after it is installed, it does not appear in the extra menus to run. I think the only way to get it working immediately is to reflash (since I don't know how to run cleanup manually).

I just got around to spending some time with the latest Canola and my only issue is with youtube videos being out of video/voice sync again. They were working fine with the previous Canola beta, or at least I seem to remember fixing this issue with an older version of Mplayer, but I ended up upgrading that to the latest version without sync issues, now they're back. Is everyone running the latest Mplayer version and dealing with any sync issues or am I back to square one trying to remember how I solved this issue the first time by possibly going back to one of the earlier builds once again.

then i uninstall everything and try to run canola cleanup again. but it says hardware not supported.

Etrunko (I think, you are the packager for Canola), I would like to give a suggestion about the /debian/postinst script.
It runs 'maemo-select-menu-location' in every update and asks the user to decide the menu where put Canola, this can be annoying for the user if she already has her menus modified and doesn't want to change them.

With this code, it only runs 'maemo-select-menu-location' when the installation is the first time:

i double checked and reinstalled. i can confirm that the hardware not supported is from the version u mentioned above. although the first time i ran it... it did run, after which i installed 10 and all plugins but none of the plugins showed up. so i uminstalled everything and ran cleanup... and i got the version not supported message.

Status report :

Upgraded from beta9 on N800 (latest Diablo SSU) and N810 (Chinook).

Upgrade went well in both cases, nothing special afterwards on N800.

At first the N810 had trouble finding the media it knew before (photos, mostly) although it had the correct folders in its configuration. With minimal fiddling (unchecking/rechecking things in the config menu and validating) and a couple of restarts things were back to normal again, without needing cleanup or deleting .canola etc. YouTube and LastFM plugins were OK on first try.

I don't know if or how it's not "ready for prime time", but all in all it was a painless and effortless upgrade here. Cheers to the team, tudo bom ! :-)

Actually it's not ready in more complex use cases. The multi-task (switching from music to youtube then to podcast) will bring you several bad surprises on it's current form

Canola and Carman in my Jaguar XKR 2001 in place of my satnav and CD player...
I would like to install my n810 where the satnav screen is in my xkr and have it running carman, canola and USB host to my 320GB WD Passport drive.

First, I need to find out the wiring of my XKR, then I need to know whether Canola2 can handle 50,000 tracks?

Chris : I have added to the Canola backlog for a while now the "support" for usb and other mounted drives in the settings tab, but you will be able to do it even without it.

About the 50.000 to be honest the maximum we have tested was 16.000 songs :)

It's more about Sqlite than Canola, as most list uses lazy loading :) but getting covers will probably take a lot of time :))) tip : uncheck all options but amazon before doing it

A quick question - Canola is great. There has long been promised an FM radio plugins as well as support for video podcasts - are there any signs of these at all, or have they quietly died a death. If so, it would be a shame as with them Canola would take care of all my media needs, and I really really like the interface.

I just installed Canola after uninstalling beta9 to upgrade to the last Diablo SSU (not enough space on the internal memory), and found that I can only open music, and photos, there is no video icon, no youtube, last.fm, internet radio, podcast, etc. and the settings screen it's very simple, missing some options, it's like Canola can't load any plugins beside music and photos.
Does anyone has the same problem? I already tried uninstalling Canola, running Canola cleanup, and reinstalling Canola.
How can I get all the plugins working again?

Tried running Canola from the root shell:

So far so good with the new updates. The coverart is a lot better now, even though I noticed I still have a problem of albums appearing more than once or not at all (there is a blank area where an album should be. For some reason I can't click the top two left album covers no matter what. For what it's worth, the tracks are ~90% ogg vorbis files.

As for the video thumbnails, I have it scan my mytube directory and most of the flv files thumbnails come up showing black. I believe this is due to the thumbnails being taken too early in the video. The thumbnails should be snapped considerably further into the video.

Ok, finally fixed Canola, first I uninstalled Canola, then installed Canola and tried to run it, it worked fine, then installed Canola tuning, it worked fine, then installed 1 plugin (youtube), it worked, installed themes, it's still working, installed last.fm plugin, and still works.
Looks like installing everything together before running canola for the first time breaks the plugins.

Basically that issue arises when you install a partial version 10 of Canola.

FOr me I went into my repositories and first tried disabling just the extras-development repository, then uninstalled and re-installed. I still had the same issue.

I went back into my repositories, and disabled all my repositories except for the Maemo Extras which contains Canola 9. I uninstalled and re-installed and Voila`!
NOw it works!

I'm having an issue with podcasts not "sticking" when I add them to Canola. I have posted a bug report (#2945) in the garage.

Basically, when I add an url for a podcast Canola searches for the feed and then adds it to the list. However, when I leave the podcast setup screen and go into the podcast "listen" screen most of the added podcasts are no longer there.

It doesn't seem like specific podcasts are being dropped. It seems random. Every time I try to add any podcast, something from my list is dropped.

I've tried running the Canola cleanup and reinstalling but it didn't help anything.

I just ran canola -vvv in Xterm but the output was too long to copy/paste. Is there a way to export this output directly to a file so I can put it here?

Mytube is not "using" mplayer. It really opens mplayer window and plays the video.
then what you have it's a fullscreen mplayer playing the video. Mplayer embbedded mode... the one that we use (so we can draw the video inside canola) has issues, with performance and AV sync... we are trying to figure out how to solve this but looks harder than we thought.

I think he means the aspect ratio bug where the video was stretched across the whole screen, no matter what the original aspect ratio was. I personally don't like this stretching and would rather prefer a letterbox view to e.g. crop off black borders from some 4:3 videos.

Do we have a solution for properly installing beta10 ? Here is what I have done so far

1. used the latest version of canola2-cleanup to clean up everything.
2. followed installation instructions from the canola2 website
3. rebooted my tablet
4. Launched canola

I still see only 'Audio' , 'Photos' and 'Settings' icons - nothing more. I have not started installing any of the add-ons , but am I not supposed to see a 'Videos' icon as well ?

I have tried this sequence many times - with no luck. Installing beta9 after disabling the extras-devel repository works fine, but I was trying to upgrade to beta10 .

I have also tried running it as root, and no luck there either.

Have been testing beta10 for a little while. I noticed two things:

Pausing seems to cause the playback indicator to reset to 0. Unpausing starts playing where I left off, but it was still a little wierd.

The order of the tracks seems to be lost. I didn't have this problem before, but now it seems that beta10 has more trouble putting the tracks in the right order. The tracks might be missing track id3 info. I can look into that, just wondering if anyone else have noticed this?

Otherwise cool, but it's very hard for me to see what is really new. That is both good and bad :)

I have a double boot set on my tablet, and when I've installed canola 10 on my main OS , there was no problems with it. It just works fine - have all icons and plug ins.
But when I've booted from the SD card ( the same OS version - Diablo with all latest updates) and installed the new Canola (after removing the old one 'beta9' and using the cleanup) the Canola was not installed proprly. Now it just have only audio , pictures and setting icons. I've tried to uninstall canola again, to use canola cleanup (several times), restarted the tablet (several times, also between the installation of every plugin) but there was no effect. What I seenow is that Canola and Carman doesn't work on my SD card OS, and work perfect on mine main OS.
I think that probably the problem is in the Canola Cleanup, because on the SD card I was using the old Canola beta89 version ( which worked pretty good btw), and I doesn't have any version of Canola installed on my main OS image.
If anyone have any suggestion on how to install Canola properly on my SD card it should be great. Now I'll try to do cleanup once again, the install Canola beta 9 , then cleanup, and then install Canola beta 10. I'f this work, I 'll update my post.

I have finally resolved my problems with Canola beta10. As i wrote before I'vfe completly uninstaled beta10 and tried to install beta9 . The result was a non-working beta9 (tha same as the beta10 there was no video icon and plugins), then I decided to play with the repos, and removed (disabled) all repos except maemo-extras and the nokia's. Then i've reinstalled the canola beta9 and it was fully functional. Then I've used the cleanup and removed beta9, removed also the mplayer, then add maemo Extras-devel repo, restarted, and then installed the Canola beta10. Now all is working just perfect.

Were the songs created by seperate artists? If so you need to create a compilation album. Which is done in settings in Canola.

And a rescan was done? Hmm.. I think I had that problem myself once. I had to use a program like mp3tag to delete and readd the id3 tags. Try using an mp3 tag editor and having it save all of the files that show this issue with the same tag version like ID3v2.4

This is probably happening because you are running diablo and installing a chinook package. To fix it , try the following

1. Use canola-cleanup to wipe out existing installation of canola
2. Enable your extras-devel repository, but make sure it only says diablo
3. Install canola from application manager.

This should fix the problem - I was in exactly the same situation as you for a long time, and after trying many different things, the above trick worked
