Where can I download the latest pymaemo that will work with the 2006 OS?

python is in the official repository.
type (with root) :
apt-get install python2.4
you can type apt-cache search python for more info

When this is done I get the following:

Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree... Done
E: Couldn't find package python

Any sugesstions?
