It seems like Nokia has surprised us with this one! The Nokia 770 is now available in Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, and the UK. ...Read the full article. (http://www.internettablettalk.com/content/view/132)

I'd caution buying it from EU if you're from overseas like I am (Canada). The duty on something that expensive is likely to be pretty hefty.

If anyone gave in (and believe me, I'm tempted right now), can you tell me how much the duty came to? (US or Canada, I just want to get a rough idea)

I'm ready to order 2 or 3 of them for our stateside use so our developers/designers can start playing around creating something interesting for elearning/mlearning customers! Our many months of anticipation will finally be satisfied soon!

Don't forget the price you see includes VAT at 17.5% - the unit price is close to £208. If there's some way you can reclaim that, it may make the cost somewhat less unpleasant.

Actually it doesn't seem to be available in all 12 european countries listed on that page : Austria, Germany and France have the "not in stock" mention. And of course I live in one of those :-)

So, the feeding frenzy begins. At least overseas.

At the moment, I could use a 770. Am at CompUSA accessing the net on one of their AOL demo notebooks! I could've been relaxing in Bryant Park doing this (which is where I was an hour ago, WiFi-less & 770-less!).

Ah well. Maybe next time!

Andy: Another slight kink - - the country seems to be hardcoded. Looks like no shipping outside designated areas.

Also, what's up with the UK price? Once currency conversion is done it's a tonne more.

Bummer :(

Also, what's up with the UK price? Once currency conversion is done it's a tonne more.

The UK Price includes VAT at 17.5%. COnversion to Euro (1.479 to the £) is about right and the Tax free price converts to just over 365USD and just under 440CND.

Is that the price you get, pre tax?

Wow I wasn't expecting this news when I got to work and checked ITT as usual!

Having tried to get to the order site from nokia.com or nokia.co.uk I realised I had to read the posting properly and followed the link to Nokia direct.

It's slightly more expensive than I was hoping for £200 would have been a lot better, but hey the anticipation is almost unbearable and I've placed my order with express delivery of course - patience is an alien concept.

Look forward to receiving it soon - I guess that as express states 1 day delivery it means I won't get it until Monday - it almost makes me want to take the day off work to play!

I'll post pictures when I get it.

BTW to check order status, use the order link in the original post and the order tracking link is at the top right of the ordering page - enter your email address and order number to check.

Also ordered a 512MB RS-MMC card from www.expansys.com - they do next day delivery for £2.95.

The card costs about £27

1GB cards are 3 times this price which seems rather unfair.

Those seems very cheap don't they. I've been holding off buying a 1gig mmc card to watch some larger films on my Ipaq because RS-MMC looks about half the price.

What do you think about a price drop in a few months?

I'm very interested on buy one, but for us, spaniards, 349€ is much money.

Our average salary is about 1500€/month, much less than UK, Germany & almost all rich EU countries. Actually, my salary is less than the half of that as computer technician.
I think Nokia & most multinationals must consider that.

I'm thinking on wait to the release on United States to buy one for 350 "bucks" as $350 = 290€

PD: Anyone has a job for me on a "real" EU country?

The online purchase experience with Nokia has been excellent. Ordered it Thursday evening, arrived today at 11! Also lots of feedback/confirmation of purchase/shipping/.... As for the device itself, it exceeds the expectations. Got it working within minutes. Browsing is quick, display is impressive, userfriendliness up to Nokia's standards,... I firmly believe this device will revolutionise the (mobile) internet experience... see my blog Nokia 770 (http://bonte.co.uk/myBlog/?cat=11)

You're going to have to!

The only slightly annoying thing about this is that Nokia aren't using a timed UPS delivery, so it's anytime between 9 and 5 unfortunately. I just wish there'd been an option to up the shipping charges for a pre-10am timeslot.

OK,

Just spent some time playing with my new 770.

Initial impressions:

* It's small. Boy. None of the pictures on the Nokia website do it justice. It's got that 'wow factor' that the original iPod had. If anything, I think it is sexier than a Nano. I'll take it to work tomorrow and see what the general reaction is.
* YES - the screen is incredible. It needs a bit more of a flexible zoom but it really does have the wow factor.
* The screen has a soft cover (e.g. there is something in front of the glass, sorry not a technical explanation) which is very cool.
* Took me some time to work out where the MAC address was (I have a mac secured network at home) - it's on the box or behind the battery!
* Seems a bit sluggish, if I am honest. Later tonight I'll try updating the firmware with the files on the Nokia site. It's by no means 'slow' but doesn't knock my socks off yet. You have to wait for a full battery before you can update the firmware (actually I haven't checked if I have the latest or a newer firmware yet...)
* Converted an episode of the West Wing from my Tivo and uploaded it (quite slow, not full USB2 speeds). Very watchable!
* Web browser will take some getting used to, but its good. First time I've used a mobile Opera and it really does feel like the desktop version in a strange way
* Nothing quite describes the buzz you get when you load up the BBC website and connect to the live stream of Radio 1. Cool!!!
* Haven't installed Plucker but will be this evening. My favourite Palm app, so very happy to have it on the 770.
* Wireless reception so far is 'acceptable'.
* Unless I'm completely blind, it seems that you can't put the stylus in or out of the holder when the cover is over the unit.
* Newsreader doesn't have a method for importing OPML groups that I can find, so it will be a bit of a slug to import them all, but it's going to rock.

Overall, I'm pleased. Apart from a few niggles it has more than met my expectations so far.

Sorry, no photos because I managed to leave my digital camera at work - seems the other guys have got this covered though.

Thumbs up for Nokia! The device is really great. The screen is incredible. So Sharp! Wifi setup is very easy. The opera browser works great too. Renders most of the sites correctly.

The only complain I have so far is that the device is out of memory easily when opening large PDF files and it then gets a little slow. I'll try to install evince later and see if handles large files better.

henry
11-07-2005, 05:25 PM
Well... I manage to crash the device :( I opened a 4.7Mb PDF file and it worked. Although slow. But when I tried to open a second PDF file (of approx 3.5Mb) the device just hanged.

First post here, have kept an eye on the 770 for a few months and ordered mine last week, arrived lunch time today and been playing with it for a couple of hours. My impressions:

- it's small
- screen is fantastic, download some digital photos that I resized to 800 x 480, they look great
- very simple to setup wireless internet connection, took longer to reconfigure my router to allow another device than it did to configure the 770
- browser is very usable, reasonable speed, not as quick as IE or Firefox on my PC but pretty good
- simple connection to PC, appears as a storage device and hence easy to copy to/from
- the chess game plays at a good level, too good for me

Very happy with my purchase so far

Feeling of a bit of an idiot this morning, as the Nokia website doesn't have any updates yet - just the software that will enable updates in the future!

Anyhow - my 12 hour report is as follows:

* The Real player and mpeg support of is the 'hidden gem'. Real video streams perfectly at about 220kbps and using it as a portable radio is something that I hadn't thought I would do but I've done a lot already
*It is still a little sluggish. Especially when you have more than about 2 apps in memory, the keyboard takes a little time to appear and switching reminds me of Windows CE v1.1 on a Philips Velo. I am sure that this will improve with updates... and it's not too bad (don't want to sound like it is a real problem).
* The newsreader is good, but not great. Adding feeds takes time and I just can't seem to get on with it... sure there is something I'm not doing, does anybody have any tips?
* Mail is well implemented and works smoothly with IMAP
* As with all v1 Nokia products there are a few design niggles (steal some people from Apple, Nokia!!!) - mainly related to the cover. You can't take off the cover if the charger or USB cable are attached, you can't take out the stylus if the cover is on the unit. Turning over the unit in the cover feels clunky and needs two hands.
* Browsing on it is brilliant. It is the first ever handheld device that I have used for 'surfing' rather than 'looking at websites'.... to explain - it is not a restriction to follow interesting links or explore stories... something I have never done with a PocketPC / Clie or Palm
* Bluetooth connection via GPRS is good

I've had ParcelFarce do that to be before with about £900's worth of computer equipment. Turned out the driver had delivered it with another box to a company a mile or so down the road. I'd call UPS asap and get them to sort it.

It went number 5, even though the driver wrote 7 on the form. When my wife checked with them the guy that answered the door denied all knowledge of a delivery which leaves me a little concerned.

UPS don't seem that bothered, the woman I spoke to said not to worry if it's lost it would be between UPS and the vendor to fund a replacement. OK but a) I've been waiting for some time of this and b) Nokia now have the UK out of stock so replacement is not going to be any time soon.

Smiley Dan, yes. Until I track her down.

Took my 770 out for lunch with some friends :)

It seems to have exactly the same kerb appeal that the first ipod had (before the concept of mp3 players was easily explained or understood) - people's reactions are:

"What's that"

.... you explain

"Why would you want one of those"

<look at the screen>

"Wow - that's amazing"

It went to number 5, the house next door but I guess when the wife called she spoke to the husband not the wife, if you get my drift, and he'd been asleep when UPS called.

And yes, Beatrice is rather pleasant to the eye. In fact very ;)

After going on about the 770 for weeks to various people I placed an order on Sunday night. The status is "out for delivery" at the local depot, I saw the UPS man go past the office in the morning but I am hoping it will be dropped off on that way back while he is making collections.

I am *hoping* that it will be able to run some kind of sat-nav or moving map software, I have various TIFF tiles of the local area and it would be a boon to have in the car. I have a laptop that could do that sort of thing but it is too bif and fragile to carry around. I think even GPSdrive will be good enough for me, but TomTom would be great too.

Ok, arrived about 1/2hr ago!

First impressions: Feels very solid and of good quality, the sort of thing that I would expect to come from Nokia. I don't expect to drop it but I imagine it would fare quite well. MMC door was a bit stiff (had to use a pen top to prise it out), hopefully it might loosen up a bit. Screen is "wow" - my boss got a new Sony TX1XP yesterday (tiny w/s carbon fibre thing) and I was impressed with that, but this seems to be even higher res!

Darn, just realised I should have posted this from the 770

edit: well I can edit from it anyway!

Hello
As I understood from previous posts, do we who didn't get one in the first batch, have to wait until the end of november? My ordered version is labeled sv,fi,dk (as in three Nordic countries). Has anybody heard of delays with them?

Rumors say Nokia collected devices from Nokia staff in order to have at least a couple of units in stock for launch on Monday. This is what they started with:

BE,NL = 23 units (out of stock now)
DK,SE,FI = 37 units (out of stock now)
AT,DE,FR = 0 units (nothing in stock at all)
IR,UK = 42 units (out of stock now)
ES,IT = 17 units (5 in stock left now)

Just give'em a StarTrek(TM) replicator :D
or wait forever ...

Today I got an email from Nokia telling me that my order from Nov 4th has arrived and will be processed. "... due to the huge demand there will be a delay in delivery. Delivery is expected end of November".

At least there is a reaction from Nokia! Unfortunately they didn't mention the year ;)

Hurray! Now also on Nokia's eurostore:

"DUE TO HIGH DEMAND OF NOKIA 770 INTERNET TABLET WE ESTIMATE THAT DELIVERIES OF NEW ORDERS CAN ONLY START IN DECEMBER 2005. IF YOU WISH TO RESERVE A NOKIA 770 PLEASE PLACE YOUR ORDER NOW. We will process the orders in the order they are received. Once the product you have ordered is available for delivery, we will charge your credit card and you will receive a Shipment Notification email, which will enable you to track your order"

Not too promising :| (but at least it's december 2005:)

Just a heads up to folks on here. Dr. Ari Jaaksi works for Nokia and has been the front man for the 770. He happens to have a blog where he has discussed the 770 over the past few months. Not that I think he can do much about the availbility issue, but I have posted a comment on his most recent blog entry about the problem so at least he's aware of it. Here's a link to the blog:

And here's a link yo my comment:

If you'd like, you can post a comment as well.

Now it's obvious that Nokia has technical problems with production or a shortage in supply.
A lot of people here on itt -especially in the US- think that Nokia ships the N770 in Europe but this can't be true. They went out of stock 5-6 days after launch (Nov 3rd). The published order numbers in this forum show that they shipped some hundred devices (500-1000). That's it.

Has anyone in Europe received a device after let's say Nov 11th?

I ordered mine on Nov 4th from Germany and haven't received it yet. The order number is 200514, e.g. the 514th order in Europe :(

I ordered mine Sunday 6 November @ 23:00 in the UK and had it in delivered to Central London from Belgium by lunchtime Wednesday 9 November, so Nokia were definately not sold out of UK/Ireland stock by Nov 3rd - it would seem that different countries had different allocations. My order number is 200886.

Nokia do appear to have executed this launch appalingly badly - at least now there is official notice that supply will not resume until Jan 2006, one can only assume the batch sent to the US will be their last for a while too. Bummer.

I am surprised they went for a full public launch with so few stock available, perhaps they had production problems or maybe the production line was somewhat specialist and needed urgently for other products?

Maybe the units sold were scraped together so that they could claim a 2005 launch date and also get some more into the community and therefore get some demand for ported apps? This would mean that when production is in "full swing" there are even more apps available.

Darn. I can't believe how close I came to getting one of the first batch. Perhaps if I hadn't been so hungover on Sunday I would have ordered in time instead of leaving it until Monday morning and missing the boat.

I'll never drink again (yeah, sure :)

What we haven't had from Nokia is any update on fullfilling orders already in the pipeline. Apart from the 'you should expect delivery at the end of November' email I've heard nothing, has anyone else?

Nokia just sent me an e-mail informing me, that the delivery of my German Nokia 770 will be delayed. Instead of at the end of November as stated before, I will now get it in December.
I really hope it's due to last-minute improvements on the device and not due to Nokia's inability to roll out a new product.

At the moment it looks like the later. I'm still being told I'll get mine here in the UK 'next week'. If that really is the case, the delays are due to production problems, not improvement related.

My hunch is that the delays are software related and they want to improve things before continuing shipping. If so, hopefully the new version today meets Nokia's quality requirements to roll out the product in volume.

So, last week I phoned Nokia about my UK order for a 770 (placed 7th November, 201095) and was told "it'll be with you by the end of November, next week"

This morning I make another call to get an update.....

"we still don't have news on any stock but we think it should be with you in December, probably the next 2 weeks"

:-(

I'm now guessing that I'll get my 770 2+ months after I placed the order, I've no confidence in the December date.

This is very poor stuff from Nokia, especially as I've had no update to the original order confirmation email that told me to expect delivery in November.

After being told yesterday morning that mine (also ordered on the 7th) wouldn't be shipped until sometime next month, last night I got an email saying it has now been shipped.

This is great news for me personally but I'm still left wondering at the competance of Nokia's customer service operation.

WTF is Nokia doing! Now they really pissed me off:
having ordered the 17th and left waiting, back then before putting my order I asked nokia twice (phone and email) about other means of distribution other than direct sales; after watching the CompUsa affair of our fellow Americans, I felt curious and went to kelkoo.es, just to see it listed at the same store I went the first time ever to ask about the product (elcorteingles.es) grrr. Today is a national holiday in Spain, so it is difficult to contact to check for actual availability.
The other thing I noticed is that the same store is listing a bundle of the n770 and an Internet Connection pack from wanadoo, which happens to be my own internet provoder. Back in october there was news about wanadoo subsidizing the n770 with the adsl connection in Spain, the only thing is that the subside seams pretty meagre now, because the price is a bit higher than the n770 alone. Anyway some folk said that that wasn't happening (the internet connection and n770 bundle) because wanadoo was leaving. If wanadoo hadn't the worst customer service ever (the second prize I would give to Nokia, right now) I would call to see if this was true and what about the hopes of giving away a n770 to a loyal customer :-), but I guess I'll have to wait, not much hope for getting mine this week either.
