I am not sure what kind of format Canola2 supports and if format conversion is a must be.
thanks.

thanks.
it looks like the maximum resolution is 400*240, and 352*288 if the ratio is 4:3.
but this wiki just talks about Mplayer, not mentions canola2.

Think of it this way, what's good for the goose is good for the gander. IE, if the settings say something works best for Mplayer, it's likely that the same values are true for Canola.

Canola2 uses an embedded version of Mplayer.

windows XP professional, Dell laptop.
.MOV files are generated by Kodak digital camera. they are small.
this is the output of console:

I've been using TMPGEnc Express to convert any videos I want to watch on my n810 to DivX 4.12 @ 400x240/23.976 FPS and MP3 128KB/48kHz. They look and sound great even in the Maemo player.
Since HD space is so not an issue these days I just have a directory on my NAS for my IT videos. They also end up a bit smaller than the originals so when I go on the road I can bring a bit more with me on my flash cards.
In fact I usually watch with no recompression.
Standard 700MB movie encoded with XVID or DIVX with resolution lower than 7XX x 5xx looks acceptable - sometime I see glitch at high motion scenes but usually it's all ok - topping CPU to the max.

I agree that re-encoding is not always needed. However given that I have the CISC CPU time and HD space to recode I figured why not. In doing so I got: No studdering ever, lower OMAP CPU usage for cooler operation, lower OMAP CPU usage for longer battery life, slightly smaller file sizes.
I played around with a number of recode settings and getting down the file size even smaller is of course an option. However I really like things to look good. :D
