Tomorrow I pick up my n900 from the post office and...
I'm f'in ecstatic. I've had the n95-3 for two years and love nokia's phones (and luckily have not had to deal with their customer service). I read through this forum twice a day just to see what's new and what topics are being brought up. I look forward to helping developers and programmers with whatever bugs I find.

Been lurking on the forums for a while reading up on the N900 and finally signed up!
I'm a software engineering student with a thing for linux. Had a G1, but it died on me recently and I'm finally talking myself into splurging and getting the N900. Android is nice and is getting some nice apps at this point, but I don't think I can pass up the amazing internet browsing and true open source nature of the N900!

Hello everyone i am new here and i am definitely liking the commitment i have seen from this community to support its Devices and OS =). I am from the DFW area and would like to see other n900s in the wild here.
From what i am told, there is a lot of people in the DFW area that have them and i would like to learn more about them. Which is why am here and i wouldn't mind having some study sessions on the phone at a barnes an nobles perhaps but that's just an idea lol. Anyway you all can PM me if you are around the area because i think we all can learn from each others ideas.
Thank you for making this site so informative =D

Hello everyone! My name is Marcelo, I'm from Brazil and I have an N900 and a n810 and I love both! :) Lately I've been trying to develop for the N900 (knowing the tools), and I hope to start a project one day using OpenGL ES 2.0 (I am currently studying the API). That's it. A big hug to everyone. :)

Hi, all! Just joined here because I'm on the verge of buying a Nokia N900. I had checked out the Maemo SDK, and I've been very impressed at what this system can do. And before this, I thought I had been sold on Android!

Hi all!
I'm new to Maemo, but I've been around Linux/*nix quite the while now. I've got my N900 for about a week now and already discovered maemo talk before I bought it (for example I had already found the iSync plugin to sync the N900 with OSX) but now I found even more very interesting threads so I thought I'd join and try to contribute a bit to the community where I can along my very exciting journey through Maemo territory.
Like I've said I'm new to the OS but already I'm loving it!
I hope to have a good time here!

Got my N900 on Friday and I'm VERY pleased with it. I've been using SimplyMepis Linux on my PCs at home for some time now, so the N900 felt very comfortable and familiar pretty quickly once I'd enabled the extras repository and installed a few apps. Using sftp to drag and drop files from my desktop PC is a revelation after previously messing with USB cables and/or Bluetooth. I do have a couple of minor issues which I'll now go and search for answers to and/or post elsewhere about... :)

Hey Hey everybody.
Got my N900 at the end of January and had a few peeks on here. thought it was time I stopped lurking and joined up.
Despite a few teething issues (ovi store why don't you work?) I love it.
Haven't added extra catalogues etc yet but will be looking into it now that I'm one with my phone.
Knew the N900 was for me when I first saw a vid last july/august. blew me away then and still does now.
As I'm new here and not some linux programmer if anyone wants to point me to the most relevant stuff to look at/follow, fire away.
peace

My N900 arrived on Monday, and despite a rough start (loading up the forum to see it delving into anarchy over the meego announcement), I really enjoy my new device. I had an N800 in the past, and I liked that as it was, so to add a kb, phone radios and fantastic cam - the N900 is a sure winner.
Thanks for the great forum and keep up the great work.

Hello all.
Had my N900 (on Vodafone in the UK) for a few days now and definitely enjoying it - a far more pleasant experience than the Touch Diamond it's replaced. I've added a few more apps and bits to keep me entertained, and my next task is to have a play with changing the LED notifications.
Those that complain about user-friendliness should really have a go on WinMo 6.1 and see the number of user-added apps/workaround that had to be installed to get the basics working (and every so often, you'd still end up in a bland, Windows screen to remind you that there was only so much HTC could cover up!).
This forum is really helpful, so thanks to those that take the time (and have the skill!) to resolve problems.

Hello to all!
I've used to using very good pocket computers like Psion Series 3a (1993-1999) and Psion Series 5mx (1999 - till now). I've tried Nokia 9210, was using Sony Ericsson P900 (2004-2007) and then P990 (2007), and Nokia E90 (2008 - till now).
Now I use N900, which is closest to 5mx, however its UI is definitely not so mature (yet). Let's improve it! :)

i miss the custom aplets that were of such great abundance on the N810. why doesn't any one make custom brightness applet or widget. i also need a easy volume widget please love meamo and i especially love the community. all positivity and every one is so eager to lend advice. i will miss the Maemo brand. :'(

Hi all,
I have been stalking maemo.org for a few months now trying to decide whether or not to buy the n900. Decision made, I just got my n900 3 weeks ago and I love it. I am coming from a windows mobile device and have learnt alot from the guys and girls on xda-developers about flashing, tips and tricks etc. I don't have any linux experience but am hoping to learn.
Maemo.org helped me decide on the n900 over the milestone and nexus one. I will mostly use it as a mobile internet device, the reason for which it was designed and then as a phone. I appreciate it is not without its flaws and was well informed by reading threads on maemo.org before I purchased but as an internet device it is excellent.
Thank you to all the contributors on maemo.org from whose knowledge and experience I hope to learn. I have already learnt how to copy and watch dvds on the n900 thanks to RevdKathy, fatalsaint, jaffa, Laughing Man and many others.
Now I am hoping it will run meego but if not still a great device.
Thanks maemo.org
Yes :))) , today I bought my new Nokia N900. Before I had HTC TyTN II (Kaiser), but now, this is a big jump :) .

Hey guys and gals,
Registered originally a few years back when I got an N810, but then wasn't really active. Now that I have my N900 as my primary device I think I will be hanging a lot more on the Talk.
Looking forward to things shaping up with MeeGo in the future. Because open source rocks :)
Also writing a blog where I occasionally mention something about Maemo (http://www.basshero.org)

I got mine a week ago and have not let go of it yet. I've been having fun showing it off to many people who are genuinely interested in it. My mobile life has truly evolved to the next level , talking on skype, msn, and facebook, all at once in matter of seconds and then switching to an incoming call ending it and then going back to what i was doing... remarkable (my n900 dictionary description :p)

Greetings everyone I brought a n810 off of ebay for a great price. I love it However as soon as I get the funds it think I am going to get a n900. I am learning coding (python and php mainly) so this is perfect to typing codes on my commutes. And playing a quick game while waiting in line.
I have a few noob questions since I am new to 810 and GNU/Linux

Hi there,
I just bought an N900 in the UK and think the device is fantastic.
Lack of turn-by-turn navigation is a bit of a disappointment, (I'm moving to Aus soon and was hoping for a decent satnav solution) but otherwise I love it.
Previously I had an Openmoko Freerunner because I wanted to experiment with linux on a phone. Let's just say it was never ready for prime-time and it should consider itself damn lucky that it didn't get thrown off a bridge somewhere. Still, some sucker paid 150 quid to take it off my hands....
Compared to that the N900 is an absolute dream :)

Hi,
non Nokia affiliated finn here. Just yesterday I blogged about my problems in choosing a proper mobile device:
http://huima.wordpress.com/2010/03/02/getting-yourself-a-mobile-device-choosing-symbian-android-or-iphone-os-device-oh-how-can-one-even-start-to-choose/
... and later on that day I got a second hand N900 with only few weeks of usage time behind it. I am still thinking about iPhone a lot, even though N900 is by far the best mobile computer I have ever had... emphasis on the word computer. This beast is not a phone or computing device, but a truly amazing engineering feat: really slic mobile computer.
Few days earlier I commented about communications and message related the Moblia + Maemo merger:
http://huima.wordpress.com/2010/02/19/fear-uncertainty-and-doubt-or-how-nokia-stumbles-in-communication-with-consumers/
And now I own N900, which means I did listen more to the geek inside me - rather than the consumer in me. I will give some time now for N900 and use it as my only mobile device ( not counting real laptops ) and see how I feel. In just one day I have woken up to the possibilities and great features already present in the device and system.
Even though N900 is still not quite mainstream ready as I hoped, it is getting closer and closer to the point where you could give it to someone non geeky and see how they appreciate what the device can offer. My impressions about Nokia-software are completely transformed as many components included with N900 are really slick and work well. Innovations in Conversations are really cool and I am really looking forward twitter plugin etc. tools to mature more, though I already had to install it as it makes life so much easier.
The amount of good quality software for Maemo is disappointing compared to iPhone, but everything you need to be a connected modern netizen is included or easily available.
.. and rest of ir.. Oh well. I'm keen on stating to program python again with a twist of Qt.

Hi, I've had my N900 since Feb 1st. I am new to linux. I have years of Symbian user experience and a deep interest and background in technology. Over the past year I have successfully turned my wife and kids into tech lovers as well. I carry my N900 and N82 in a dual holster with 2 active sim cards with the 5.99 tmo plan on both.
It's nice to meet everyone.

Hello everyone!
Got a N900 last week, been using it since on and off. I like it, but there are a few problems that Im facing; Like the usage of the front cam, checking my balance (credit) after I'm done with a call.. Basic, I tell you!
Besides I also look forward to some great applications soon, although the ones that seem around are interesting enough.
Right, enough of the clatter, let's get down to the real deal! :)

03-05-2010, 11:53 AM
Jason from Memphis, TN here.
I ordered the N900 for my wife in January she likes it but a little frustrated that MMS isn't a feature. She'd like the simplicity of snapping a pic and conveniently sending it like a text. And frankly I would too. Funny that I got her an N900 for her first 'smartphone'. The good thing is that she hasn't had experience with other mobile OSs to miss the mainstream functionality.
I know that this isn't a mainstream smartphone, it's a geekcentric mobile computer with a phone app. But why can't it be both: a Linux-geek-dream-device that comes with a mainstream iPhone-killer UI and apps suite. Then the geeks can hack away.
The fact is that I evaluated the 2 year expense of getting iPhones for both of us with the overpriced AT&T 2yr contract and realized that it would be less expensive and allow out-of-contract freedom to buy 2 N900s and stay with Tmobile.
I got my N900 in February, but I'm still using my Treo 650 untill I can figure out how to get data transferred to my new N900. I've been using Palm OS for about 10 years, so Maemo is taking some getting used to.
I'm hoping that this device/OS gets enough users to encourage a rich base of app development like Palm had and iPhone has.

Now it's time to switch from WinMO (temp) and Android (perm) to Maemo. I'll most likely just lurk and create a theme or two inbetween the months. I rather like reading moreso than posting.

Hi I'm Steve, I have the N900 on a Vodafone contract.
I have a love hate relationship with it.
I hate it that there are not many apps yet and those that are available are still in infancy.
I love being able to sort out the bugs and crashes and in the process learn about Maemo/Linux
I think in 18 months it will be the perfect mini computer with phone capabilities or a Smartphone

Hi I'm Tim.
I've been interested in linux, python and the potential of mobile apps for a while and something about the N900 pushed me over the edge and made me buy a one without a contract.
Now that I've spent way more than I can realistically afford on the handset I'm hoping that the guilt will push me into doing something cool with it :)

Short mobile history: Siemens M50, M55, iPhone 3G, G1, N96, 5800, N97 and finally the N900.
iPhone was great, played a lot with jailbreak apps. Didn't like the Symbians. Android is nice, but compared to Maemo there are still too many boundaries.

Hi Guys.
Just wanted to say "Hello" and what a great community this seems to be! I'm really glad I found out about it.
I'm really interested in the 900 and hope to get one under contract on voda when my contract is up in a few months. I realize that I could maybe wait for the first meego device but if the top guy wouldn't want to use the first release for daily use that's good enough for me.
I'm not "techy" at all and if truth be told I would probably be better off with an easy front end user experience. But I have never bought into Apple. I like the integration that Android offers, but I have always liked Nokia. - Though it has not been easy. I loved the N95 but hated the constant updates that often failed. Contract meant I missed the 8g version and so I tried Blackberry next giving the n97 a swerve. Grabbed the Storm1, not even 2 and have regretted it for nearly 2 years now. Realistically whichever phone I upgrade to now would be an improvement.
No phone is perfect. Many are fanatically defended regardless it appears. But these two year contracts are a pain when the technology races ahead as fast as it now does, and so I must try this time to make a decent choice! Lol.
I like what i see with the N900, not least it's Tv out of course. I will continue to read all about it with interest and listen to you guys opinion. If and when I get one it's great to know you guys are around.
Cheers.

Hi, just joined today but have been reading comments and reviews since own my N900 for a couples of weeks. This by far is my favorite phone right now. The capability of this phone and its open source is great.
I used WM prior to this and once I saw it advertise back in Nov. I knew I had to have this. Loved everything about it. The ability to multitask, dl, and web browsing is great. Just wish nokia can added portrait mode to web and text. And when I mean web in portrait I mean acutally use all the landscape features not just reading and clicking links. Landscape is nice but entering text on web and texting with one hand is difficult.

I have post this somewhere else, but I'm not sure where I can get help and I need it!
I just received my Nokia N900 on March 18. I bought a screen protector and installed it right out of the box. I shopped for about 2 months and finally decided for this Mobile Computer/Smart Phone because of the amazing hardware features and its flexibility due to OS system. However, I've found a few flaws that have made me think of returning it and get something else.:(
With the N900 I wanted to replace the following:
3 Year old Samsung Blackjack i608 (FAIL - This phone has MMS and IM support without Internet connection needed):(
3 year old Gateway M250 Laptop. (FAIL - TWO major issues: Flash Video and Streaming Audio via Internet):(
4 Year old Sony Cybershot camera (PASS - Good Picture and Video):D
4 Year old iAudio Multimedia Player (MP3,WMA, FM and Voice Recorder) (PASS - A couple of Apps needed but work very well).:)
And I wanted to acquire the following:
GPS (CHECK):p
SIP Phone Capabilities (CHECK);)
True Mobile Computer Capabilities (Fail)
May be my expectation was to high, but I read several reviews and decided for the N900. I really WANT TO LOVE the N900 BUT these two issues had got to me:
YOUTUBE freezes on ANY video after 10% streamed. Also, does the same at WatchMoviesOnline[dot]com. But it works well in tu.tv
Internet Radio that comes built-in the Media Player plays only about 20 seconds of ANY song and then freezes.
My internet connection (15Mbps download 5Mbps upload)
Do I have a bad unit? How can I fix these two issues?
I hope with MeeGo all these issues are resolved, including MMS and Flash 10 support. Thank you for reading. ;)

Hi All,
Great website and forum.
I have been a Nokia fan for about 11 years now, I remember owning a 5570 the brick...over year Nokia phones kept me happy, online most of the times...till the time I got my N97 just 4 months back ....The phone design and concept was great...but not a great phone...one fine day my E drive was not accessible and I had to return th phone to the Nokia store....
Now, I got a N900 and its on its way home - Mumbai from New York as I write this ....Yes I got my phone from New York...even my N97...
So, my question is What are the draw backs of N900 and How can I overcome them, I am already a disappointed Nokia fan...And I hope N900 is better than the N97...
So suggestions and feedback on the phone would help me great...
Thanks,
Srini

Hello all, another newbie here, this one's called James and is from the UK
I'm a former iPhone user who was sick and tired of Apple's lack of vision w.r.t. flash etc., so I have decided to jump ship and order an N900 which should be arriving on Weds this week.
I'm completely new to Maemo as a concept - never even heard of it until the N900 (lol)

Very much looking forward to my first mobile internet experience, and I hope I've made the right decision regarding device choice. It was a hard one to call between HTC HD2, Moto Milestone and N900, but the Nokia came up tops in my book!

hey guys! just saying hello, used to consider myself a bit of a phone whiz (in my small circles - not internet world!) and love making my gadget of choice do things it was never really meant to, so when i seen the n900 coming obviously it spoke volumes to me! loving it so far, even more so loving being thrown back to noob status since i've never used linux before, and even my vague recollection of DOS helps not a jot when i have to command line again now. so i apologise beforehand for any noobish questions i might (read: WILL) bug you guys with! but we all gotta learn sometime! okay rant over, peace out.

Hi everyone and greetings from Tampere, Finland.
I got a first IRL touch to N900 just few days ago and I must say I'm impressed. I'm a previous user of several S60 devices and I've been working in many mobile testing projects for couple of years at Sasken Finland Oy.
I joined in the collaboration to contribute in Maemo & apps testing and conversations as a user, a professional and a hobbyist :)
@jarnori - welcome to Maemo, and to our forums!

Greetings from India!!
Bought N900 from Helsinki Flagship store since it is not yet available in India.
Thanks for all the great work done!
I have installed and tried so many of the apps that I keep enjoying it ( only fear is of consuming the rootfs space to the last byte ).
The best are Quake3, vpnGUI and rdesktop-cli, Pidgin and Transmission. Now, I can proudly say that my N900 is fully utilized.
Just heard that MeeGO will be the new name for the next release, getting ready for more.....
Cheers,
Anwer

Hi all!
Been lurking around here for a couple of weeks now, sorry for not saying hi before. Bought the N900 because I wanted a hand held computer that would take photos, play music and do all the other things that a computer does, but in my hand. Oh, and make and receive some phone calls too. Guess what? This kit does all that so I am one happy bunny.:D
Cheers guys,

Hello there!
Didn't know there was a hello thread for new members, so I've been around and posting here and there already.
The name is Darkwolf. Long time Nokia fan and when I got one as my second cell phone, I never ever switched to anything else since then.
Was also right there on the spot when the first Symbian smartphone (7650) came out and from then on it was all Symbian for me.
When I had the Nokia N95 I noticed that Symbian was starting to get long in the tooth even for me and Nokia's competitors were starting to strive ahead in their own OS ventures and (hardware) features.
Although I was still happy with my "simple" Nokia N95, I was a bit worried about Nokia.
But then... out of the blue... there it was... the Nokia N900!
After a lot of reading and pondering or I should leave my trusty Nokia N95 behind with Symbian all together as it didn't have any short comings or missing features for me, I found out that my subscription was almost due and I jumped the fence.
And boy am I glad for making that move.
Being a tech freak I adapted in no time from my keypad plus text prediction input kung fu to the QWERTY keyboard on the Nokia N900, which was my only true worry.
I remember the pains with the initial release of the Nokia N95 and how many firmwares it took before it became speedy and long lasting battery wise, so here I am again. Back to where I started.
It's ok though, it has been over 3 years since I was part of the early adopters world and I am ready to play again and go through it all once more.
Now if you excuse me, I have a Maemo forum to read as I've become quite addicted to it... :p

Hello forum users!
I like this forum very much and explore it on a daily basis to learn about my beloved n900.
One thing I couldn't figure out until now is how to set a profile picture (Avatar) for my forum account. I searched and found the following post:
Lycanthropy: If you click "Control Panel" in the list to the right, you will find "Edit Avatar" to the left on the page that opens. It will bring you here:
http://talk.maemo.org/profile.php?do=editavatar
Unfortunately I can't find the "Edit Avatar" link and if I open the above mentioned link a page gets opened where I can't change anything (see attached screenshot).
Please can you give me hint what I'm doing wrong?

New to maemo, and a bit of a noob on Linux with only 15 years experience. Slightly more on other Unix, about 23 years. Never stop learning eh?
