Hi!
I've been a lurker, user, tester and now learning python so that I can be a developer for my second NIT.
No excuses for saying hi after this thread has reached a 101 pages, even though I was lurking since its inception.

Hi, I'm from Jerusalem. University lecturer in Education.
Got my n900 a month ago while visiting the US.
Very new to Linux (have used microsoft all my life) and so pretty clueless as to many things - but learning much from this forum.
Actually my Nick is Hebrew for clueless :D
So far very happy - except for a few glitches.
BTW I would love a good App style Onenote - something with multiple tabs all around the periphery of the tablet - so I could easily navigate to GTD style lists on certain topics in a tree like manner (Click "personal" >click "Shopping" >Click "Groceries" or Click "Work" > click "teaching" > click "MA students", etc) that could be synced with a windows PC. If anyone has a suggestion or wants to develop something....

Hi everyone! I have been a lurker since I got my N900 back in January. I love this community. I have always been into small electronics and cell phones. I could almost say I have been obsessed with pushing electronics as far as they can go and pimping them out completely. When I acquired the N900, I sold off all my small electronics so I could carry around one device that does it all. I am very excited to see the path the N900 takes us. Thanks to all in the community who have the knowledge and expertise to take the N900 beyond it's initial limitations and to all of us inexperienced ones who are willing to take the risk to our devices in order to appreciate what the N900 has to offer :)

Hello everyone..! A new member from Denmark here!
Just ordered a N900, and expecting it to arrive tomorrow. I'm sooo excited, I've tried all sorts of OS'. For years I've been on Windows, and changed to Mac OS for two years ago. I've tried iPhones and HTC, and when I heard about the N900 with the Linux, I had to try it out. So tired of all the hype around iPhones. I know absolutely nothing about Linux, but it can't be that hard. Plus I have all you guys to ask, right? RIGHT??? Hehe...

Greetings from Abu Dhabi,
Always have been a nokia user so bought my N900 couple of weeks back - I like the phone, not something that your daddy can use easily though !!! lol - I had a choice between HTC HD2 / SE X10 and N900 - I picked N900 & my 2nd phone this year will be HTC 4G (whenever that comes out), can't wait for it.
Kudos to all who are maintaining and contributing to this forum.

My N900 should be delivered today - I hope!
I waited for weeks until Dell had it on sale so I've used that time to read this forum. I almost canceled my order after reading some unhappy posts but we'll see. I got tired of Android's Linux bait and switch for my G1 but have many paid apps that I hope to reuse on the n900 someday. After the G1, I bought a Nokia N79, one of the least supported phones around - but I loved the camera and the tv out and the battery life, so I may keep it as a backup.
If the N900 works out, I can sell my Zaurus C1000, the G1 and the netbook. That would be cool.
Terry (geeky grandma from Iowa)
p.s. I didn't bookmark the thread about applications desired from other mobile apps but if X-Plane could make it to the N900, I'd be in love for life...

Hey guys,
I just joined and thought I'd leave a short "hello" message to you all. I have just exchanged my Milestone to a N900 as I had tons of issues with the device which would have required a replacement unit from Moto. Anyway, since I was unhappy with the limitations and curious about Maemo I decided to give this a shot. So far I am liking it. It's different, a lot to get used to... but in a good way. I am sure I'll have tons of questions, so I hope these forums will be of good use to me.

Hello all,
I've been lurker for a couple of weeks pretty much. Been using the site to gauge whether i should get the N900 or not. In the end, i decided after having the Storm, that i can't do much worse!
Received the N900 a week and i'm enjoying. Its everything i wanted (from being able to customise it, to download community generated apps and the user base).
Look forward to catching up with all.

Hi all
Since my Girlfriend claimed my Netbook ("I need it. Go buy a new one or something") i decided to go with something "smaller".
So i searched the Web for something that was smaller than a Netbook but had more power. I Thought about a Sony Vaio P but it had to many flaws in its design (or was to expensive, if i would have decided to live with its problems).
Finally, the N900 and the Nexus One seemed to be a good choice. I Havent decided yet, but i think it will become the N900.
Im from Germany, i understand English pretty good, but i may have some mistakes in my writing. So, sorry for that.
Thats all i have to say so far ;-)

Hello all,
I just joined and wanted to say HI.
Recently owned a E71, was left in a rental car and was never returned to me. Prior to me loosing that phone I did allot of research as to what phone I'd be getting next and the Nokia N900 was it for me. So I guess leaving my phone back in the rental definitely pushed me to get the N900.
I am absolutely amazed on the features and capabilities of this amazing colossal of a device.
Since owning this phone I have been doing some research on apps etc.. and I've customized this phone to meet my needs.
But the only thing that sucks is that I have no clue on allot of things that is posted on this site about programing etc..
Im very new to this, but researching this site will most def. help me out on any question a may have or will.
As of right now I cannot find any other phone on the market that I would rather own.:D
I love this BEAST
Great site.

"Hello World"
I've been lurking in the forum for months....Alwasy wanted a Nokia tablet but was waiting for them to implement native telephony services into one. The N900 answered my prayers and follows up my Nokia 9500, E90 & E71. I've had my N900 since November and I'm a regular at the Nokia Flagship Store in Manhattan....Met some good people at the N900 Meetup in October....
I dont develop but I do test. I've been quietly testing apps for month on here now. Figure its about time I speak up and make msyelf known.

first of all, wanted to thank all of you for this great community!
i currently have a Nokia N95 and think it's still one of the best phone ever.
now i want a new phone!
after reading a lot of reviews, i have come down to two options!
Nokia N900 or HTC Desire
i have even seen the comparisons and both have their pros/cons!
my only worry for n900 is the screen's response and future of the OS(maemo/meego).
any help would be appreciated!
thanks a lot!!

I have been lurking here occasionally for a while, and as I just got a N900 as a birthday gift, I decided to sign in. I'm planning to do some C++/Qt programming for my N900 someday and perhaps even learn python for PyQt...

Hi everyone,
I got my N900 a couple weeks ago, traded my iPhone 3G for it. Best decision I've made. I'm so not used to being able to actually customize my device without voiding a warranty, it's kind of weird to be honest. I don't even know where to begin.

Hello!
I've been watching the forums for quite a while, even since before i got my n900 and love maemo.org and my n900!
Its simply fantastic and i know it will bring future opportunities such as more ported OS-es and/or virtual machines.
I heard alot of moaning from people already saying we dont have enaugh apps for maemo. Since it's not as mainstream and it's open-scourseness I find that prety logically, but since debian came up on N900 and other emulators as well, we might have a similar number of applications within reach than Iphone or Androids not too far in the future.
IMO: My N900 can do, 99% of what your rivalry phone can & more =)

Hello everyone from Las Vegas!
So after owning an N810 since July of '08 and having gotten an N900 for Christmas, I finally broke down and registered here.
On the whole, I really love my two devices. I was formerly a longtime Palm aficionado. But by the time I had bought my last Palm, a LifeDrive, it was becoming obvious to me that Palm was going nowhere. Then one day I started looking around for a replacement. I saw some video of a guy plaing Doom with a Wiimote on an N810 one day and I was hooked.
A little more than a year getting my N810, the N900 came out. I'd always wanted a phone, but everything out at the time was kind of a disappointment for me. Everything seemed to be based around locked-down app stores where everything seemed so oversimplified. I wanted something I could do anything with. Sure, the N900 might not be for everybody, and sometimes Nokia's approach to some things leaves a few things to be desired. But where else can you find a phone that can play Doom, Duke Nukem 3D, or for that matter anything else, with a Wiimote or PS3 controller? Hell, I even recycled my old N810 into a server with the help of Easy Debian.
These things are really the gifts that keep on giving. I really don't know where I'd find myself had Nokia not decided to undertake the grand experiment that is Maemo. They've really got gold here.

Greetings from Steve Jobs,
Got my N900 today and I must say I'm loving it more than the iphone, I can't believe I made such a crappy device :O, ipuke everytime I see my creation...n900's OS is awesome...my ipad feels like a tampon compared to this ^_^. Great job nokia! I've decided to give away all my iphones to the stupid, since no one in their right minds buys my product any more -_-.......^_^ O well.....dammit! :S I just throw up my mouth three times thinking about the iphone.

Hi guys!
I don't currently own a maemo device but in less than a months time I will be upgrading my current mobile phone to the N900!
Saw it in the shops a couple of months ago for the first time and fell in love with the fact it has a Linux-Based operating system. So when I got home I decided to investigate further and the device has become number 1 on my wishlist :P
I have been reading a few posts on here and found a lot of things to answer my questions :)

Hello People! I got my n900 about a week ago and it seems really awesome so far, but I have experienced a few problems such as occasional sluggishness and confusion over some package management. Hopefully this board will help me resolve some of these issues.
I may also potentially look into programming for N900, although that will depend on my schedule.
In any case, I am excited to be a new owner of N900!

Hello people...
I bought a Nokia N900 and joined the community so I can learn to develop programs and the platform. I've come from a big developer community (XDA), but I'm new into programming and hacking :p... I hope to take my N900 to another level and to make it a pleasent experience... Untill now and though has some bugs and features missing, I'm loving the Maemo experience, and hoping we can make it better. I've tried many devices, ipaqs, htcs, iphones, g1s, etc... But none is as challenging and fun as the N900
Cheers, keep up the good work

Another WinMo/Android expat here-tried the HD2 and its media pefromace was awful, but the N900 has been good-the builtin DLNA client is a plus.
A few more codecs, some improved phone/bluetooth options and I'll be one happy camper.

Just realsied I never checked in here before - how rude; sorry.
I'm Steve from Wiltshire, Southern England. Came to N900 via brief Nokia X6 experience; found Symbian struggled with the otherwise excellent Cap. screen. Lots of Nokia's before that and work phones from other brands.
I have allways been impressed by Nokia's hardware (especially camera), consistently high content standard
I figured that as Symbian (iS60 5th Edition) was in its sunset years with no immediate replacement on the horizon. Decided that it'd be best to look to the future and Maemo 5 seemed the only way to go. I was prepared for missing features and waiting for developments - I did my research.
Very impressed with my N900. It's stable, fast, reliable and totally engaging. I have never owned a device that demands such a deep and involving relationship.
I mainly use it for taking photos, making calls and accessing calendar and email in my work. Now I've configured my device I find it easier to make calls and access data than on any previous device.
I'm not blind to the values of other brands and keep an eye on developments. I try out other OS's in store and on friend's phones and some features outside Nokia impress me greatly. I keep coming back to the importance of Nokia's hardware and general specifications.
Nokia has been good to me for years, so I figure a bit of patience and loyalty by me is warranted at this turning point in the company's history.

Hi, I am Teemu, a first year physics student in the University of Eastern Finland in Kuopio. I've owned the n900 since february, which I was really not sure about what kind of device it would be when I ordered it. When I finally got the device I absolutely fell in love with it. I have tinkered with linux computers quite a while so it was a natural choise.

Hi.
Just joined this great community. I've been reading this forum for a little time, and now decided to register.
I've got some interest in developing in Qt/PyQt (read: C++/Python, not sure yet which to choose) for Maemo and MeeGo. I have little programming background which consists mostly of PHP. So there's still lot to learn.
Maybe some day I'll make (more or less) useless app.

Hey there Newbie here great boards!!!
Have been thinking of getting a N900 for a while and I'm due for an upgrade next month, I'm based in the UK. I'm not a programmer but I am a bit of a technology geek and I think I know what I am getting myself into.
Currently I own a Samsung Omnia I900 and I have been happy with it for the 18months or so it does everything I wanted but the physical key pad/qwerty of the N900 really appeals.
The thing is on many top ten lists the HTC Desire, Iphone 3Gs seem to always be at the top with the N900 being lower down. However from my point of view as I have an Omnia, the Desire and Iphone seem like improvements on the same theme whereas the N900 seems like something else entirely
I like to do the normal things with my phone now email, browsing, text, listen to music, watch movies etc and the N900 has got good reviews where all those things are concerned. As far as apps go I'm not overly concerened with a crazy amount apps. I went through a phas with my omnia when I had loads of apps and then ended using about 6 regularly.
I've been scouring these boards for more info into whether I'm making the right decision for me. If possible I'd much appreciate it if anyone could point me in the direction of threads that will give me more info and insight on whether the N900 is the right way to go.
Thanks in advance.

Hey,
Joined the community a few days ago (mostly to bypass that terrible "type [word] backwards" search restriction), but thought I might as well make this introductory post too. Just got an N900 a week ago, upgrading from an N80. I've been in love with the phone since it was announced, following the news since then too, and I'd been just waiting to get the cash. My older brother is on these forums already (he's a more avid poster than I) since he's had his N900 for a few months now.
A little bit about me: I'm from California, currently a fourth-year undergraduate in Information and Computer Science at UC Irvine. I'll be graduating in June and starting a job where it'll be easier for me to buy new phones (though 1. that's not the only purpose, and 2. I'm not sure I'll need a new one after this amazing piece of technology). In the meantime, I'm just kinda coasting through my last quarter, playing with fun toys like the N900.
Anyway, I absolutely adore the N900, and I fully appreciate what this community is all about. I look forward to the future of Maemo (MeeGo) and everything included, starting with PR1.2, once it arrives..

Hey all... Proud new owner of an N900. Been lurking here for a week or two to see how the community works around here. I got this device to broaden my horizons. I love doing things with my device that no one else can (that's what she said...LOL) Anyway, coming from 4 yrs with Blackberry, I'm quite used to OS firmware upgrades but not on this level. My Linux skills from 6yrs ago is severally shot but I will give it a go. Btw, Leetut you are the bootscreen master. Hopefully you will continue making them. I've wanted this device since I first saw it in October, I hope it doesn't let me down.

Hello everyone, I've had the N900 since February and have enjoyed its unique OS but now I'm looking to get the most out of this amazing device. Love it so far, and to be honest, I haven't done much with it. Looking forward to learning a lot!

Hi there
Got my N900 5 days ago, very happy about it. So far it only failed me when trying to register here with it :p Really....
I've been using Ubuntu inconsistently for a couple of years, but still qualify as a grade A linux-noob.
Former "smartphone" was a N73 so this was a giant step forward.

Greetings from the drunkest city in the US, Milwaukee, WI!! I've had my N900 since the beginning and I'm very much a linux n00b but so far I have sucessfully OCed it to 900mhz and love the potential of this device. My previous devices are as follows Nokia E61i (my first S60), BlackBerry 8100 Pearl, Nokia 6133, Nokia 3560, Motorola V120, and my very first, the Nokia 5165i. I also got an HTC HD2 as soon as that launched and will switch between WinMo and Maemo 5

Greeting!
Well, this is not exactly my first posting - I posted some comments when I'm researching about buying N900 and Maemo - but this will be the first one I posted from Maemo on my N900 I got few days ago. I've been using Linux since 1995, so I am glad to eventually own one of the first smart phones that run Linux OS (not just Linux kernel descendant).
My previous was a Treo running Palm OS; it had its screen cracked. So hopefully I'll find out good way to protect my N900 from similar issue!

Outstanding phone and fantastic support and info available right here to help out if you get stuck - LOL they really should put a warning label about the Rootfs folder on the box for us linux n00bs! I have my N900 now for two months and - as a Linux geek from Holland - I'm very glad with him (or is it her?). Especially I like (and use):
- the open Linux platform
- phone possibilities (GSM, SIP, skype)
- email facilities
- calender
- microB browser
- the contacts integration
- widges and applets on the fourfold desktop
- possibility to develop app's by myself
- photo and videos
The next things could be better (some of them will be corrected in our well beloved and soon expected PR 1.2):
- IMAP support (sync of all folders on the imap-server, imap-idle)
- battery capacity
- small rootfs (luckily there are poss. the bypass this problem)
I did a big search for a new phone and this is the only phone with an open Linux platform and so much hardware. I did'nt choose it for it is a Nokia. I'am not a "brand" geek. I am always in search for new hard- and software challenges. Nokia brought it to me with the N900. I don't understand why people blame here Nokia because they bought a N900. I think they bought the wrong phone in stead of "Nokia sells a wrong one".

Hi, I got my N900 a couple days ago, I've had many Nokias before, all of them S60 phones, I was looking at a worthy upgrade for my N95-3 and nothing that came after it was interesting, N96? you got to be kidding, N97? I wouldn't call that thing a flagship, and the i8910 has no keys, the N900 seemed to be the best and logical choice. I'm new to the whole linux thing and this site seems to be a nice place :)

Hello from Ireland,
been lurking on the side lines and decided it's time to register.
First off I would like to say a BIG THANK YOU to the community, I love it, I check the posts every day to learn new things about the excellent Nokia N900!
I got the "device" in Feb and use it as my main phone and wouldn't be without it.
ok it has its flaws but I know with this community it will keep getting better.
I have no programming experience, I remember having a C64 when I was a kid writing the poke and peek commands.....ahhh the days :-) but that was then.
I would love to learn how to write programs and in time I will.
Look forward to getting into the workings and I will help out where I can.
Cheers,
Mark.

Hi everyone, I just got the n900 about a week ago and I'm hoping to try and learn to make applications for the n900. My last phone was the Nokia 5800 which I thought was great until I discovered how awesome the n900 was, I just had to get it!
I am thinking of learning how to create applications as I have done a bit of programming before. I used to play about with something called DarkBasic on the PC, it was a game programming language. Never really finished any games though, but hopefully I'll make something for the n900 :)

Hi everybody,
I've finally got my hands on an N900 and I'm blown away by it. This forum's been very helpful for me while I've been getting to grips with it, so thanks to all of you who have unwittingly been answering my questions!
Linux is a complete mystery to me, and one of the main reasons why I chose the N900 was to give myself an excuse to dip my toes in the water. It's faintly terrifying, but I'll get there.
Anyway, hello to you all, it's good to be here.

Hey guys,
I'm looking to buy an N900 in the coming weeks and am very excited about the possibilites, but afraid of the complexity of Linux.
I'm an expert when it comes to hardware and the Windows OS but have no idea about the innermost workings of Linux, much less on a phone.
I joined these forums because I thought you guys would make it easier for me to migrate from Symbian and harness the full power of the N900.
Hope I'm not wrong. :)

Hey there guys, I'm eiraku and I'm using an N900 that (figuratively speaking) fell from the sky. And I was trying so hard to decide between it and the Milestone too, glad God dumped me the N900 and decided for me.

Enjoying the N900 immensely, bugs and all.

I've had my N900 for 4 weeks today, on Vodafone UK. And I really like it!

I've also posted a few messages but never said hello. So, hello! :D
I bought my N900 on January, and I use it way, way too much. The device is great, but the real deal here is the fantastic community. I also appreciate highly as some of the people from Nokia (Quim Gil, Harri Hakulinen) devote their time to take part on conversations.
The whole thing here, users, programmers and designers interacting with each other is pretty unique. I hope Nokia understands this too, as N900 is more than just a phone or tablet. It's a community.
Hello all,
My name is Dan and I have an emotional problem. I bought an N900 a week or so back and love it, being somewhat familiar with linux/terminal I'm excited about the potential of this phone, I also love the hardware. BUT I just can't get rid of my trusty N95, it's battered, it's bruised but it is the Millenium Falcon of mobiles.
All joking aside I do really like the N900 especially its view of SMS/IM being essentially the same and the integration of Google Voice/Skype/GTalk. My irritations so far are that the media parts of it (camera options, music playlists) seem to be behind the N95/Symbian. I suppose part of the fun/challenge of this phone is that if there is something you don't like, then learn to code and change it! That's an incredibly freeing concept for a consumer, especially in the very closed world of mobile phones.
As for the MeeGo "what's next?" issue, my belief is that phone OS development will follow a Mozilla/Netscape model (open vs commercial not successful vs choked by the competition!).
Anyway, psyched to have the device.
Cheers
Dwars

I have been lurking around the forums for a few weeks now and I just got my N900 a few days ago. I have to say that I love it and I am still discovering all the neat features of this device. I have semi defected from Android to try out this OS. Loving it so far. I'm on the Tmo USA network and I am experiencing great service with this device. I hope to learn more as the days pass by and hope to contribute as well. Thanks for your time.

Hello, I just registered today.
Got a new Nokia N900. I love the device, BUT I hate trying to set mfe for my work. I keep getting "invalid host address for Exchange Server". I am using the same setup I have on my laptop and my PC at home ( they are working fine). I have read a lot of threads, and it seems that a lot of people are not happy with it:mad::mad:.
Can somebody help please

Hello
just thought i would say hello. I recently joined and have the n900
I had the HTC Desire which was a fantastic phone. However i must say build quality on the n900 is much better.
The only thing i can say so far is the 900 software is very limited. Also the HTC is a lot faster.
I hope to gain extensive knowlege of the n900 from this forum.:):):):)

Hello everyone.
Very excited to be joining this forum. I just bought a Nokia N800 on Ebay and it s for me (even with the new N900) is a marvel. But even buy it mainly because Linux study. Well this is my presentation Thanks everyone. Pidgin already installed, I have connected a Bluetooth receiver and all prefect. What I want is to install Debian Turbo with the image that is, to install full versions of Open Office type. Please show me a link of this very detailed. And I read the forum posts but not able to specify where the meeting as I install applications will be stored? in the internal or external card 2GB I have (are 2 cards)? this can be done?. Thank you.

Hi,
I am also sort of new but I was blinded by other threads when I started and just right now seen this "Hello" thread so I've popped in to say hello!
I had several pdas and smartphones before getting a N900 and this little thing rocks!
I like it even more so after I’ve discovered it can run garnet applications I’ve used in the past on my Treo. I like emulators and VMs. Will be even happier when Wine is running natively on it as well.
So much to investigate! So little time! Husband will have to iron his own clothes in no time! LOL!
Thanks for this very helpful forum.
Cheers!:)

Hey, pretty new here, too! ... And I need more posts to be able to send personal messages! :D
I ordered my N900 the same day I knew it existed. This happened quite late. :/ It's incredible I finally own the device I've been waiting for so long. It's my super-micro-mobile-pc. It's everything I need except a resistive multi-touch display, more RAM and USB host mode support. But I can live without these...
Cheers,

My N900 is hopefully in the mail. I've been waiting for 6 months, browsing the forums, bookmarking apps I'm planning to download, and trying to learn the ups and downs of this phone, sorry: mobile compuutah. And now I could finally afford it.
Sometimes I get worried. There's a lot of complaints and bug reporting. But then there seems to be a lot of commitment as well. (Though maybe not from Nokia.) I think it will be OK... I'm not totally unfamiliar with terminal stuff and some basic editing - I did play around with my older brother's C64 when I was a kid (20 years ago) and that taught me to think "computer" - but I have not been keeping up to date with programming since people started using PC's. The moral of this story? I guess I am just thinking out loud.
I think the open source community is clever and interesting and I am sometimes tempted to investigate all of these languages/platforms/systems people are talking about, like debian, Qt and what-have-you. But I don't think I have the time to become a real contributor... not before all the h4xxors have already moved on to the next generation. (Any female coders out there at all?)
I am looking forward to a stable psx4all to play FFIX, gonna try and find a 64emu for nostalgia. Other than that, I mostly need a calendar. An expensive, colorful calendar.
So that's a little about me, device-wise. (Oh, yes, I'm currently using a borrowed X1 and I can't stand Windows Mobile.)
Hopefully I'll get the phone sorry, mobile compu-blah, after the weekend. And then I can start the painful head-against-the-wall-banging customization process.
Cheers from Sweden,
Monster
Edit: Got it. Feel more plastic than I imagined. The X1 certainly has a more expensive feel and sturdy keyboard. But I love the crisp screen and that it plays standard video formats.

New N900 user here. Coming from E62, E51, E71 Nokias to Maemo-powered feels great. I'm used to my home/work PC running Ubuntu, so I'm at home with Maemo. And community support is the greatest. With you guys this device will not get outdated any time soon.
Hello everyone just got my n900 on monday thanks to the price drop at dell. I have been doing little things so far just installed a deb program and using it on the web. So far everything works great. Just my videos are a little choppy on vimeo but i am assuming that is cos of the size and quality

and I am totally in love with maemo like most guys/dolls here....
I bought the N900 (nov 2009)for what it was advertised, and totally love it...
I do not miss portrait mode or the other short comings as some keep ranting about......feels more like a computer as it is....
have seen the meego 1.0 UI its more phone oriented.....think maemo UI is better and different than everything else ...really want a mobile computer not a smartphone

New N900 user here.
I've known for a while that Nokia makes great phones. But I have been with Sprint for 12 years. Never had any problems, but finally just wanted an upgrade after having some serious issues with the Palm Pre, and finding the Samsung Moment just a little too buggy for me. Sprint has always had good service, but since my Blackberry (which was great), I've had bad luck in the past year or so, and I just wanted to give something different a try.
So I figure that if I was going to do it, I was going to do it right. No iPhone for me, because I want a keyboard. So straight to the N900 it is.
I'm a 3rd-year medical student, and I use my PDA a lot. Looking stuff up, etc., and I love the potential of the N900.
I also am in buildings (hospitals) that don't get great cell signals, so I like the voip capabilities of the phone. My mother is friends with an executive for VoxCorp, so I got their service too. Works beautifully over WiFi and 3G, but is a little shaky on anything less.
So I'm switching it all over to T-Mobile, and keeping the VoxCorp for when I don't have reception.
Anyway, I think this thing has a lot of potential, and I am eagerly awaiting developers to support it in the way that they should.

New Nokia user since today here. I chose it mostly for the OS, being a gnu/linux (gentoo and debian) user for years.

Hello everybody!
I'm a Kubuntu user since a couple years, and Linux user even before, I don't really remember how I found this site and N900, but I liked it very much and now I've been able to buy one. I'm not programmer, but I like to learn and try new things, and I am in favor of open source movement and freedom, and that's mainly the reason I bought this device (Altough its power helped too)...
Hope to be useful,
greetings!

Hello guys! I'm a college student in the U.S. and I recently bought a n900 (kinda late to the game) and i love it! I've been floating around this site for a few days and from my observations I must say this community is pretty cool (i guess by cool i mean geeky) with some surprisingly intelligent individuals. I guess the personalities here must be pretty unique if we're willing to buy an expensive, non-mainstream linux device that relies on it's members to come up with apps for it...

Greetings from Northern California! Recently bought the N900 largely on Kyle Rankin's recommendation in a Linux Journal article. Spent a few weeks researching it online and finally placed the order. Amazing device. I've been using Ubuntu on several desktops and even netbooks for some time, so the N900's approach isn't entirely unfamiliar, though the interface and a few specifics are taking a bit to get used to. Will be posting on occasion when unable to find answers in the forums.

Thank you! My first "hack" was to import my old WIndows Mobile contacts by copying a script from the forum and putting it on my n900, and even though I was following instructions it feels nice to be in the terminal.
But where to start with coding? Does everybody need C++? Or is it OK to dive into this Qt thing? I guess there's a lot of guides on the netz... It'll have to be next month, when my brain has cooled down a bit.

Old member returning...
I joined back in 2007 just before purchasing my n800, which I carried with me everywhere until about six months ago. Then the screen went bad and I could find no solution. The poor little guy sat on my dresser for weeks as I learned to live without him and soon stopped coming to maemo.org on a daily basis.
Wracked with withdrawal symptoms, I became a daily reader of engadget.com and pocketables.net, looking for the logical successor to my lovely little Nate. Sad thing is that while there are a lot of tablets out there, most are not available (or available yet) in the US, and none (IMHO) are a match for the Nokia product.
So I finally shopped victoriously on eBay and am now the very happy owner of an n810.
THIS FORUM is one of the reasons I bought my first Nokia tablet and a major reason I opted to buy a second. The support from the people in this forum is amazing, so if you're new to Maemo, welcome... if you own an IT, you will be glad you came in here.

Hehe, being of the "gender doesn't matter" faction, I usually don't care whether people think we're not out there. But I found that most of them realise it once I get one of my *****y fits... :D :D :D
but I think I have to get more Karma before being allowed avatar and/or signature with my posts.
Don't you get the links in your control panel under "Settings & Options"? If not, I'm sure it's not related to the number of thanks, but maybe you just need 10 posts or something like that?
I'm rather sure I uploaded my avatar pretty soon after joining, so whatever the restriction is it should be easy to go past it.
Thank you! My first "hack" was to import my old WIndows Mobile contacts by copying a script from the forum and putting it on my n900, and even though I was following instructions it feels nice to be in the terminal.
I hear you! Apart from the obvious advantage of being able to change almost everything to your liking, it's this feeling of "being in control" of that little thing in your pocket that makes it such a great experience.
But where to start with coding? Does everybody need C++? Or is it OK to dive into this Qt thing? I guess there's a lot of guides on the netz... It'll have to be next month, when my brain has cooled down a bit.
Well, it depends. You can either go with Qt (which sadly requires C++, but at least takes away some of it's annoyances) or with PyQt, which would offer they same functionality using Python. Or of course the GTK bindings of either language.
If you want to be "future prove", rather grasp the nettle and go with Qt and C++. It's quite amazing how easy it is do develop any N900 application from within the Qt SDK that will then work on Symbian3 phones (or your desktop) as well. And of course on MeeGo, once it's out.
Anyways, I'm enjoying being able to surf anytime, and my RSS feed which encouraged me to find interesting chinese blogs. I'm a China buff.

loving it! of course I was a little intimidated by the massive device but knew that it would deliver.
first time to handle anything linux based and so far so good.... even after my daughter dunked my unit in a glass of water.
Hi! I'm almost n900 owner (havent bought just yet, probably in a week I'll buy) and I have been reading lots of useful stuff about it on these forums... And im so glad that I found maemo.org for this kind of stuff because it has given me so much information. And I'm from the ultimate Nokia country, Finland ;)

hello to everyone from here to send a greeting to this community. bye
I've lurked here for quite a while and finally decided to register. Got a lot of good tips from people, so thanks!
I have both an N800 and N900. I liked the N800 a lot but kept thinking it would be cool if it had a phone in it so I could reduce the number of gadgets I carry. So the N900 was just what I was looking for. In fact, it also completely replaces my laptop for personal travel.
Been using Linux since '94, am currently a Debian user. I am a programmer, although the only programming I've done specifically for the platform was to help Tatu a little with the N800 port of Free42. On the other hand, a lot of generic C code I've written for my job seems to compile and run fine on Easy Debian.
So, anyway, hello all!

Another new owner here. Longtime Nokia user. Love the N900. For all the bashing it takes , it serves my purpose beautifully and Im glad im not locked into any of these service providers here in the US.
This community and the forums are awesome. Most of my summer is being consumed by surfing the forums and trying to take in the amount of information in here.

Hi Guys, In London UK here. Just got my second hand N900 off ebay and I love it. Bit of a scratch on the screen so I may well look into ordering and fitting a replacement part.
Filled it will apps and themes allready and it looks fantastic. Will prob be getting some PS3 contollers for it for all the emulation

Hi everyone. New forum member here. I got my phone during one of the latest Dell promotions. This is my first smartphone. Spent a good two weeks learning the ins and outs.
In preparation for several trips, I wanted to get tethering working. I downloaded Mobile Hotspot, but was unable to get my PCs to link to it. Bought a copy of JoikuSpot and was able to get that working with my wife's Mac Powerbook. Ultimately, wired tethering (via PC Suite) worked best for my linux laptop. Saved me already from having to pay exorbitant WiFi fees at our hotel.
Had quite a time getting Navit working, but ultimately got it going. But because I used the author's scripts instead of App Manager to install it, I'm now unsure whether to let App Manager upgrade it or not.
I'm not really a social net kind of guy (I'm a Facebook holdout), so I'm focusing on core communication features. I like the Skype and Google Voice integration. Waiting for Fring to get video call functionality.
Resisting the temptation to install everything in the repositories... :)
I am curious.. What's the difference between installing via App Manager vs manually vs the Ovi Store. Do files end up in the same places regardless of the install method? If you install via the Ovi Store (haven't done this yet), do future updates come via App Manager? I suspect 'yes' for all of these, but please let me know.
Thanks,
Richard

Richard:
Welcome!
Yes to all of those questions!
I've had an N900 for a long time, but I want to quote a friend who just got one, and her answer to the "is that a phone?" question.
Her answer: "it's everything!"
She was on a cruise ship and the people asking her were duly impressed.

Hello Hello Hello
Had my N900 for ~4 days. It blows me away more each day.
Before I bought it I was slightly dubious from reading online discussions, but I think most people don't really get is the power it has!
I've been using linux ever since I first booted Debian Potato on a pentium 200MMX was my main computer. Took all night to download the ISO over a 33.6 modem. :D amazes me how far things have come!
