Hi,
Looking foward to using this site regularly, now that I've become a bit more patient with my device and realise that there's a lot more learning to do.
The reason why I joined is, I just installed FMMS. I tried sending an MMS and it failed and said that my settings were not correct. I googled 'how to setup FMMS on my N900' and it's saying that I need to create Devel catalogue, and that to be careful because it could wipe my entire phone. So not sure what to do. Is it really this complicated to start doing MMS. I would really appreiate any help.

Thanks

Hello,

Just recently purchased a n900 from Amazon. To be honest, still debating on whether or not I should keep it, not only from a financial standpoint but also from a product longevity standpoint.

From what I have seen of this geeky community thus far, support should be alive and kicking at least for the next year or so. If only this little powerhouse had the battery of my e71 :).

P.S. If anyone has any technical expertise with fixing speaker issues with an e71, please let me know! It seems that my waterproof bag ended up not being as waterproof as originally thought. While the water damage indicator doesn't register any water damage, the device did get wet while on my most recent jaunt to Finland (of all places! haha).

'ello all,

Friend of mine on here, Kingoddball, has an N900, and I'm just wondering what I need to do, or kill, to get it off him!

Seriously, nerd from way back in the 90s when I got my first computer, used Macs all through school, played with Netware, Windows, then Linux.

Back on Macs, of course, nothing better. Except Debian. Haha.

I do alot of "unusual" stuff. At the moment, I'm negotiating for a HP dual core, dual processor Xeon, which I'm going to load up with Toshiba SpursEngines. Why? Cause I can!

Also looking into Doppler radar using the Cell - but I'm sure you want to hear my N900 experiences.

As I said, I drool all over Kingoddballs phone, and he tells me many a tall tale about dialing from the command line (the height of geekiness) and running chroots. I own a BeagleBoard/ PandaBoard, don't know which one I'm keeping at the moment (hello Kingoddball!) so I'm with you guys, in spirit!

Anyway, anything to do with computers, radios, phones or electronics, I love. And if its unusual, I love it even more.

Also looking into getting a GSM base station running when Ettus Research releases his new card later in the year. Once again, cause I can! :D

In a couple of days time, I'll post about the Wild Ducks, Kingoddball says you guys might like it.

Until next time...

Hello, I bought my n900 second-hand a few weeks ago, found this site and installed everything including kitchen sink and remote-toilet-flusher :p but managed to mess thing up when installing bleeding edge drivers on powerkernel 47 on low battery (no initfs) and went into boot loop.

I did manage to rescue the phone by flashing kernel only but then couldn't install anything anymore.

Now completely reflashed, installed power kernel again and currently installing cssu:)

thank you to all people developing for this computer-phone.

Posted this in diff thread, but this one's more appropriate. Wanted to say what's up to every1 here on the site. BY NO MEANS am i a developer, nor a hacker/programmer but a HUGE fan of this OS. I don't even own a N900 or any piece of Maemo technology. Love Nokia products. Just from reading blogs/forums & watching different videos, & seeing the different things this OS is capable of, seems like my kind of OS. Love tinkering with my devices, (altering settings & features to make it a more personal experience) & can't wait for this N9/N950 to come out, as it will be my first Maemo/Meego device. Now for the million dollar question, does anyone think i should stay away from this type of device, being that it's known as a "geek" or developer/hacker device ? I mean, i'm a carpenter for christ sake....lol. Dying for a new phone, currently have a E71, & would literally HATE to go the Apple route.... Any advice would be appreciated....

i don't know why we mere mortals can't own or use this phone. :) i'm no dev as well but i like it. and the fact that the N900's being supported by a great community makes owning one even more fun. i bet you can feel the passion around here.
i'd warn you about the battery though... you're coming from an E71 and from what i've heard it's got really great battery life.

edit: i forgot i dropped by this thread to say hello! hehe lots of warmth and sunshine from the Philippines! :)

Hello all! Joined here a couple of months ago when I bought a 2nd hand N900. I come from the days of Captain Zilog/Z80 homebrews, and spent 10 years writing Windows NT device drivers, so I'm loving the access that the N900 brings, and I'm using it to learn about Linux.
The effort and love you guys have put into it makes the N900 unique! You all deserve something special - I hope the N9 turns out to be some kind of reward!

What have you installed?
This seems like it's a battery monitoring program.
Open your application manager and remove all things not required (battery). Leave your system standard.
What battery programs have you installed?

Hi there, or maybe hallo as I'm living in the Netherlands.

I guess at this forum I'm the outsider, not even having an N900 yet. Even worse, I'm living at a permanent war with computers most of the time, leading me to more or less throwing some PDA's to the wall.

Nevertheless, I've never been one to follow a leader if I could find my own way. So I bought Apple computers when all around me drooled over windows and a second E90 when Android appeared to be the pot of gold usually found under a rainbow.

And now I've "discovered" the N900 as a result of seeing the Meego promo by Nokia. I was looking at an e7, in spite of 4 salesmen, as I like my privacy and this seems more to be the case with Maemo-Meego as in Android or Windows.

Got a nice offer from a shop for a new "demo" model yet I'm in doubt. A smiliar priced e7 comes with spoken navigation and quite some applications; I "need" twitter, linkedIn, facebook and of course I have to be able to receive and sent text messages, e-mail and, lo and behold, phone calls, (voice-)dialing and great inventions like that.

So I need for a (moral) support guy or gal that can perform some kind of magic when I get lost at installing. For the time being I will use my e90 but after summerperiod the n900 needs to prove it's qualities.

Does anybody know somebody like that in the Groningen part of the Netherlands?

Thanks!
JohnPeter

I'll make this brief.
I love my N900, best phone and computer ever.

Hey guys, I've had my trusty n900 for a over a year now, and have been loving it - use it to hack away at my own python apps on my hour-long commute twice per day to and from work.

Now I'm stuck in the same position I was with the N95 before I got this - stuck with no acceptible upgrade path, so I guess I'll stick with this and try to muck in as part of the community.

Hiya..
Been using the N900 for over a year now. Like it with all its quirks and missing features.
Waiting hopefully for the N9 to be released in India or someplace more accessible.
Also been around this forum quite a lot, but just saying hello now.

Sadly seeing there are no meego builds after 24aug. Hoping this does not mean anything more than a rest before a sprint.
But love maemo more.

Thanks to all the devs keeping maemo and n900 still alive and kicking.

Hey Guys!

You just can't believe how happy I am joining this community! Not only because from now on, I have the privilege, nay, the pleasure not only to call myself a proud N900-Owner, but also a member of this great community.
At this occasion I also wanted to thank you big time for all the great threads that sweetened the waiting time and prepared me to start tweaking the device as soon as it arrived at my door...you guys did a great job, lots and lots of helpful information, programs, code, etc., etc. ...I just hope you are as happy as I am with this device and stick with it for some more years as I intend to, so that we can stay satisfied with the greatest mobile handset that I have ever experienced.

Never mind the enthusiasm if my post bored you :)

Many Greetings from Bavaria to all of you guys; see you around :)

Hello,
Enjoying my N900 since several weeks and anticipating months of pleasure to come. Experience is greatest with all the help and knowledges acculmulated here. Thanks to all.
It's my first smartphone, I see it more like an extension of my linux box, making me free to move in the physical and virtual and knowledge world in the same time, ultimate freedom.
So i'm kind of in love with that thing and hope I could contribute at my level soon for all it and you gives to me.

Hi, I'm an avid GNU/Linux user, and my wife bought me a N900 for my birthday. I know that the N900 is prehistoric by today's mobile standards, but I wanted a phone using real Linux and with a physical keyboard. I'm really happy with it.

I'm from Asunción, Paraguay, South America.

Been using N900 for almost a year now, and I'm more than happy with it:p
Every now and then whenever i encounter a problem or when i need some answers, this would be my site of choice. Since i've got ALL my N900 problems solved by you guys over here, thought that it might be a good time for me to start helping out too instead of just taking without giving. Hello community! I bought my N900 using the money I got for graduating highschool. I posted a bit here and I helped as much as I could, but I've never really said hello here.
I don't think I would have had, but when I saw so many people happy with their N900, I wanted to let you know that I feel the same way about it. Or should I say her, cause it's like my 2nd girlfriend.
It's the best device I've ever had.

Apart from that, I'm from France, and already using Linux since quite some time (made my teeths on the early 2.0.x kernel versions)... so having this N900 makes my really happy :)

... for under £100 inc postage. :)

Been waiting for price to drop. Was only afterwards I realised I could use it as a 3-way mobile/SIP/Skype phone.

Hardware is nice. Initial impressions of the UI weren't good - there needs to be a nice user intro video stickied in an obvious place. Scrolling was a PITA before installing the CSSA update(?) although I was using a fingernail.

I then tried to install Opera from an RPI file. Ouch, especially as I've never used Linux before.

Changed the theme to the yellower one and got used to the interface. Found Opera on the App Manager and suddenly we were away!

Adding non-default repositories was another PITA. How are new users even supposed to know they exist?

Installed the speedpatch et al and a few other UI improvements and am now very happy.

Hello guys, i'm new here, first of all sorry about my bad english (i'm from Hungary), i hope you can understand me :)

Let me introduce myself quckly. I'm mainly a gamer, i'm playing with fighting games (Tekken series, SF4, MK9, UMvC3) at tournament level, and i'm making combo videos out of these games. i'm playing with consoles since my childhood. I had only Nokia phones, because Symbian could handle a few emulators, like VNes and Picodrive.
I switched my shitty N97 (that phone was big disappointment) for a N900 about a year ago, and it's a whole new level... Damn this is a pocket PC, definitely my favourite phone of all time! Symbian is only a joke compared to Maemo. So emulators are necessary for me, i'm a huge fan of retro games and consoles. This phone was the perfect choice for me! I'm a Ps3 owner too, so i can use my joypad with the phone. Playing retro games with a Sixaxis on my Nokia? A dream comed true.
My hobbies are videogames and martial arts. I work as a security guard at a disco.

Hello everybody! Newbie is here, my new n900 acts strange now but I'm sure I'll get along with it :) Of course it may be my not-knowing a lot about Linux systems, but I'd like to learn something about it.
My previous phone is N95 and I also posses all Playstation consoles (I'm sorta fan of it) and I'm using PC on my home computer.

Hello, I'm a new n9 owner from Norway. Thought I'd stick my nose into this community and see what's happening. Please be kind to me!

I've been waiting for the n9 (thought it was the n950) for over a year. Originally wanted the n900 but it was too expensive, and still was 'till the bitter day they discontinued selling it. The only selling point Nokia has over me is that Linux in my pocket. Openmoko looks poor and Android wicked, Palm pre would be a fortune to import, thereby Meego wins by a long shot.

As you've guessed from the post above, i'm a Linux lover. GO OPEN SOURCE!!

I love your support on N900 although I never own one but as far as the posts go, I think it is way better than N9 in term of customization. I hope someday N9 will earn the same support but... we never know.

Hi. My name is Tiago and I bought an N9.

I had pondered buying an N900 but they were too expensive at the time and I bought a used N95 instead. But in June I was smitten by Marko Ahtissari's unveiling of the N9 and said to myself "oh dear, I don't like iOS, I don't like Android, I hate WP7, this is it, my first touchphone").

Of course, I was heartbroken when Elopcame immediately saying the N9 was dead and then even more when I found out TMO and FMC, that the N9 is not really Maemo but not MeeGo enough. I'm also at FMC with the same username.

I'm not a developer but I like to tinker. I can help, for example, by doing localizations for Portuguese (European). And I hope to provide constructive criticism. Just bear with me if I lash out about the N900 having so much cool stuff and feeling left out with the N9, please. Sorry in advance. :p

Are there any hints for a New User?

Hi - My name is Nathan. I have been a member and mostly lurker here for quite a while, but I think I am going to try to start getting more active on the forums here.

I am encouraged by the number of new members despite Nokia's recent change in course away from open mobile computing. I am hoping we can keep the N900 moving forward, and I want to be a part of that (despite not being a programmer).

I love the concept of Community Updates and I would like to participate in testing, documentation, etc. to help new N900 users get the most from this unique device.

Thanks,

I'm about to be the owner of an N9 (hopefully this evening) and I can't wait! I'm by no means a programmer/geek .. just have a lust for new gadgets. The N9 has seduced me and I'm sure that even with its limited apps (not a big app user or gamer), I'll have a unique beauty!

Hi everyone

Just picked up a fresh Black N9 last weekend (from pacific mall for those of you in Toronto) for $500 CDN. I love this thing...it is miles ahead of anything else in terms of UI and is very unique. Hoping to use this forum as a good resource for N9 related info. I haven't checked my product code yet, but my phone wanted to update as soon as I put in my microSIM, so now I'm using PR 1.1.

Go MeeGo!!

Previously I was using the N8 on Nokia Belle, but it died after serious water damage :( I miss it.

I'm the only one I know around town that's using this phone - so it makes it extra special :)

Does anyone have any recommendations for a good shield for this phone? I'm super paranoid about scratching/dropping it, and I want the best protector out there. I really like the case that Nokia packages with the phone, it fits perfectly. I'm considering a zagg or ITG shield, thoughts?

Hello! :)

I'm long time reader of maemo.org (many years), registering just took hell of a long time. I've owned all Nokia Maemo-devices since 770 to Nokia N9 and have used Linux for a long time. Currently started developing with Qt (after many years of Java & different Web-technologies --> still active with those) and it feels pretty cool.

It's nice to become part of yet another Linux-community :D

Hello, my name is Nicolas, I'm from Buenos Aires, Argentina. I come from a long history with the Nokia's phone, I've been using it in the past 15 years, now I have a Nokia N9 and N8. I'm pretty familiar with Symbian, but I do not understand almost nothing about Linux / Meego / Harmattan, so this is a new world for me, I'm pretty fearless when it comes to trying new things, and I have got ventured to make my first reflashing N9 when I installed the version pr1.2 de-branded.

Hi everybody in his excellent forum!

got my n900 in July/2011 - as a birthday-present of my sons;
they had heard me praising its incredible specs starting beginning of 2010; it was too expensive for me then.
I had (still have) an LG GW620 - because of the hw-keyboard.

In spite of having grown old now (the n900 - and me too ... I'm 58  ) I still think, that the n900 is a good device ... with the exception of the micro-usb port problem (which is still threatening / becoming imminent).

I am a user, not a tinker; did some very basic command-prompt commands ( in some projects where I was an IT-project manager or -analyst) every now and then, but have to consider myself a definitive NOOB concerning real linux- (maemo, ...) experience.

have been lurking about in the forum sporadically since I started to use the n900 (at the moment only via WIFI). Have not made it my phone yet (replacing the LG completely) because of some regularly used features (contact groups, etc.) not available under maemo.

congrats to the community

Hello!
I bought a black N9 64gb. back in December from another country since I couldn't wait and had a good friend hand carry it back. I've been using Nokia products since the 2110i but really became a fan
upon the N9 announcement and reading up on Hildon and how spotty Nokia support for Maemo has been through the years.

Hello folks, just joined having come to Nokia internet tablets after many years with Palm OS devices and my trusty HP200lx as my everyday carry PDAs.

I have an N800 which impressed me so much that I also acquired an N810.

I look forward to posting on this forum.

Hi all,
I've been using my N9 for about a month now. I love the swipe UI.
I miss some apps from Android, but in the end, I have all apps that I need on my N9.
I'm looking out for PR 1.3 and I hope it fixes the bugs I experience and makes movies play smoother.
I hope the Meego source code leaks so we can play with it :p

chemical1der here. the N9 was my first Nokia device. I just bought a N900 and love it even more than the N9 (is that strange?) anyway, Android got me interested in the open source community and in my quest for more openness i found my way to Meego-Harmattan then Maemo. this is a great, great community. i'm glad to be here despite what looks like an ominous future for Nokia.

peace,

Have been combing eBay, and posted an add on the Buy/Sell zone here. So hope to find something soon!

Hey there,

I joined the Community almost one year ago and I really like it. When I bought my N900 last year I was searching for a PDA-like device with a nice and fast calender application. I didn't know about the NIT series and then I accidentally saw it on Wikipedia. I couldn't resist getting one since I was using Debian for a couple of years.

Now i got my calender application...and I see, this is not the only thing the N900 can do. I will keep it and use if for ages.

Thank you guys for keeping it alive :)

Hi everyone,
I don't think I said hello before.
So Hello.

I have the N900. Which I love but was getting bored with it.

I was able to renew my phone plan but could not get the N9 so I settled for the Galaxy SIII.
Well 4 days later and I now have an N9 64Gig in my grubby little mits.
If you are in Melbourne I know where there is one 64gig left.

The dilemma! Do I keep the SIII and sell the N9? Keep the N9 and flog off the SIII or keep both with one as a back up and because this is the last Nokia be WP takes over? Yeah I'm sentimental not that I think it will be a collectable. Every phone bar my 1st has been Nokia. I'm not a programmer or developer, although I'd love to learn to program(maybe one day I will), but I loved the N900's interface so I was planning on using the N9 for a day or 2 to see if I liked it. if it had a keyboard it would be perfect. That said I love the SIII. I didn't think I would but I do.

Chris

Hello,

Thank christ for this site, without it my N900 was going to the knackers yard.

It's now running better than the day I took it out the box!

Now just got to hope that I don't get affected again by the usb port coming loose which killed my old N900 and has left it sat on a shelf gathering dust :(

Keep up the good work peeps!

Hello community,

I'm getting deeper into linux, mainly debian, and now have this great phone for my pleasure. Just bought a N900 from ebay and never expected such an active community behind it.

Amazing how easy overclocking with kernel-config works. Overclocked to 900 Mhz and activated VDD1 and VDD2 today and it now acts so smooth.
After that ED was on the task and now I've got a Debian chroot with LXDE in my pocket, how great is that? :D

The more I get into it, the more I like it.

very easy, on your PC run cmd.exe as admin and type:

flasher -f -F rootfs.bin
Remember to point cmd to the directory where flasher is installed before doing the above...

Plug in your phone after the “suitable device not found...” Message appears...

you will see it says unable to flash due to insufficient battery level and it will proceed to charge it... Once it reaches 10% battery level, plug it out and connect it to a wall charger for an hour or so then boot it up...

Voila your phone works...

How do I point to the cmd?

assuming you installed flasher into c:\program files\nokia\flasher\

Type into cmd the following:

cd C:\Program Files\Nokia\Flasher\

Ok. I understand. So where can I get the flasher download so that I proceed with using for the phone?
