Hello !

Just registered today and wanted to say Hello.
I got a N800 by chance 3 weeks ago, fallen in "love", bought a n810 1 week later, and I'm very happy with these devices.

I used a lot of PDA in the last years and only needed to discover the NIT and Maemo ... I learnt a lot of things on your website and forums, so THANK YOU everybody !

BTW, i'm french !
Bonjour de Paris !

Hey guys! Posting from Brazil.

Just got an N800 (a s**tload of ppl did back here, actually, this website had it for something like (converting currency and adapting markets, of course) around $100, $150 tops). The Orkut community for it (Orkut is huge in Brazil) got 500 new members in like a week, they probably sold thousands of these babies.

I admit it, I fell in love with it. I take it freaking EVERYWHERE, and was typing this message in its keyboard before realizing I was right in front of a desktop. Been probably annoying the crap out of people in #maemo on Freenode, asking a billion questions.

My students loved to show off their Iphones and Ipod touches and stuff, and it felt just excellent to show my NIT to them. I made them jealous by doing INCREDIBLE things like... copying / pasting. Oh yeah, and downloading a file too. There's a TUTORIAL for you to be able to download a file to an Iphone. A TUTORIAL!

Anyways, I digress. Just wanted to thank everybody on the forum for all the support I got from it (been helping people in Orkut who don't know English too, translated the tuto on how to clone the sd using the forum links and etc.)

Amazing work!

Take care,

Bob

PS: Should I feel really bad that the other day I tried to scroll a page on my desktop box using the stylus?

LOL, yeah, I don't really understand why some people talk about other manufacturers having to play catchup with Apple when Apple's devices are clearly lacking some pretty basic features (heck when they launched they didn't even have applications).

Anyway welcome to the forum Bobbe!

Thanks Krisse!

I was caught up in the Iphone crazy till the first time I Googled it. When I saw this article on Wired talking about speculation if the new Firmware for Iphone would allow to copy and paste I was like "who would WANT a phone like that?" Who would pay thousands of dollars on contract for a phone that would look cool but deliver absolutely nothing?

Apparently, a lot of people.

But anyway, glad to be here!

I just bought a Nokia N810 also...so far it has been a nightmare ! Join Maemo.org..how in the heck do I ask simple questions on this website is beyond me..Maemo.Talk doesn't tell me anything so I figured I would just randomly pick any subject and send a "Reply" hoping someone/anyone will tell me how to ask the "community" questions??? USB Control is my main interest.but it will not install on my tablet and am trying to figure out why?? And by the way, what is a "thread"???

Hi,

Try to first see if any of your questions are answered at the wiki: http://wiki.maemo.org

If you have any additional questions, try posting a new "thread" here at Talk. To do this, go to the forum homepage then navigate to the correct category (called forum) that your question pertains to. Then click "New Thread" (or something similar).

Concerning USBControl, I believe that the maintainer is working on it, and all problems should be resolved soon.

By the way, forum lingo:

A post is a single reply, like what I'm doing right now (and what you've done twice).

A thread is a series of posts concerning a single topic.

A Forum is multiple threads concerning a more general topic.

And the Forums usually refers to the whole website and all the individual fora.

Got a Hava TV Streamer first, does anyone else have one? Then read about using it with an 810.....

Love my Hava, and I think I'm gonna love my 810, too!!!

Might also like to go geocaching with it, does anyone do that?

Hi guy, I read your message and will try to double post my answer both in French and English, however, you will need to be able to read English to use this forum.

Salut mec, j'ai lu ton message et vais tenter de poster en français et en anglais, ceci dit, il va falloir que tu puisse lire l'anglais pour utiliser ce forum.

First note :
You seem unfamiliar with technology, Internet, advanced computer stuff ... well, frankly, maybe the NIT is not for you ... I think an iPod touch may have been easier to use (but more limited).
If you know Google, search about internet forums, and learn what it is and how it works, it will help you for the future.
And then : be patient, it seems you have a long way ahead before you will be happy with your tablet.

The most important question is :
What do you want to do with your tablet ?
And then we may answer you what is really, and what is not.

La question la plus importante est :
Que veux-tu faire de ta tablette ?
Alors on pourra te dire ce qui est vraiment possible et ce qui ne l'est pas.

Second note :
I would like to add that your comment about you just wanting your tablet work as advertised ... is not very appropriate.
The tablet is advertised as an Internet device and it do it very well out of the box. however, if you are not familiar with wifi networking, it's not Nokia's fault.
But we will be eager to help you, if we can.

Seconde remarque :

Im a linux user since day 1 back in 1992 (that long?) and want something that enables coding reading listening from my pocket
..Missing the Phone options in the N810? Aaahhh hell no...

HI Folks. Just got my N810 a couple days ago. I got it because I needed to replace my laptop and decided that realistically I hated laptops and only carried one to get my mail. Honestly I don't understand how people who travel frequently can stand lugging a laptop along with everything else. Anyway. I have a company supplied cell phone so I didn;t need to go the smartphone route and doubt I would have anyway.

So far i've had a troulbe free set up with this device. it's getting my mail logging tinto home/work netwroks and also seemlessly logging in and getting mail from available hotspots where i've traveled so far. I used gizmo to make internet calls to home which is a complete bonus and will be very usefull when i'm away. Chat clients set up fine so far with pidgin. except ICQ but i'm zeroing in on a fix for that already

In short, no. But also use the Newbie link in my sig.

You can get some compatibility with Excel with Gnumeric and with Word with Anti-Word and docreader or with Abiword; or you can get Open Office running if you put in one of the alternative linux distributions.

Hi everyonje,
I just ordered my N810 from amazon and it should be here sometime between the 25th and the 30th.
I'm in Los Angeles.
I'm not going to post a bunch of stuff about myself to let you know who I am because it is getting tiring posting it over and over every time i join a new website.
I think I can contribute to this website by making you guys think about new inventions and how they will impact the next Nokia tablets.

Hello everyone. I've been posting some, but never really introduced myself.

Hi, I'm Jesse. I started with the N800 and now have the N810. I have been using Linux on and off for the past 2 years (mostly off due to very picky apps that won't run with WINE) , but am running the newest Kubuntu (Jaunty) with KDE4 on my laptop and I know my way around a CLI, just still learning the Linux one. I started using MS-DOS back in v6.22.

I live in Colorado and I like this community. MUCH more tamed than others I've been to (I don't mean other Linux communities).

Look forward to talking with you all and HOPEFULLY helping the Mer Project in some way, even if minuscule!

Jesse~

HOWDY Y'ALL!

I'm Cody. I'm from a southern state, the exact one you don't need to know, and I just ordered an N810 earlier today. I've been a member for a little bit, and have finally gotten around to doing this! I mostly use Windows, XP and Vista, and I've used Ubuntu, Hardy Heron build, for a couple months on an older laptop with a broken screen to satisfaciton.
I was drawn to the N810 because i wanted a good mobile device for internet browsing and media, without having to touch the dreaded Ipod Touch (I'm MAJORLY biased against Apple, for little to no reason), and a techie friend of mine pointed it out. After some research, I found that it completely meets my needs plus some, and even some extra perks! So I ordered one.

Hello all:

I have been interested for some time in acquiring a "color" ebook reader. The only thing out there that seemed to fit the bill was along the lines of the REB1200. Long out of production, they occasionally come up on eBay and still fetch a pretty hefty price ($100-200 range for one in decent condition w/AC adapter.)

I had been lurking on the MobileRead (http://www.mobileread.com/) forums and the N810 happened to be mentioned. Did a little research, stumbled on the Maemo community here, and read some reviews from when it was first released back in the day. The N810's maturity was not an issue for me ... heck, I'd been looking at getting an REB1200! On top of all that, the REB1200 is in the stone age compared to the N810.

So, Buy.com had them for $219 and that seemed to be a decent price. I continued to read the forums here and researched all of the device's capabilities and shortcomings. I've been a Palm user since the very first Pilot back in '96 so the Garnet VM was an unimaginable plus.

In the meantime, Buy.com dropped the price to $199. Things were looking even better. Still researching and it's starting to look like I've just about covered everything. It looks like the N810 has everything but the kitchen sink (but then again, I probably just haven't found that feature yet.) Then, the SmartQ 7 get's reviewed on MobileRead (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=48934) and it looks pretty decent. It's got a bigger screen, is faster, cheaper, takes standard SD, etc.

Well, Buy.com drops the price on the N810 to $179. After finding an online coupon for $10 off that brought the price down to $169 delivered and consulting my Magic 8-Ball - SOLD!

My N810 arrived today and I am pleased with the unit just out of the box w/o any tweaking. I think things will only get better w/all the available apps/repositories, tips, and hacks.

BTW, the maemo.org community was a substantial factor in my decision to go with the N810. It's not just the hints and tips here. It's the people and their attitude. I've seen posts from people that obviously haven't taken the time to search the forums first and some people with questions that were frankly just rude. They would have surely been flamed on other forums, but not here. Here, it seems that courtesy and patience prevail. On top of that, plenty of people here really seem to know their s#@t. Count me in!

Hello!

I'm John, a Brit but living in Spain. Work as a computer consultant.

Just got my N810 today and I am already in love!

Out and about I use my N95, but I needed something to replace my ageing Palm TX, which nowadays I was only using as a home web browser when I don't want to fire up a computer (or my wife and daughter have them occupied!) And that's primarily what the N810 will be used for, something I can pick up and get to my mail, Facebook, sports results, latest news etc. in a few seconds.

And I will say, so far it looks even better than I expected. Love that big, bright screen. The keyboard's not so bad either.

Anyway, belated thanks for all the help I've invisibly received while lurking here.

See You!

Thanks for the welcome, Den!

So far not so good. I can't say I like this thing very much. If there was one word I'd use to describe the 810 it would be "clunky". (I've updated the OS already btw)

Still, I've been reading a thread from someone who didn't like his much at first ("Please talk me into liking my N810") and this weekend I hope to get time to have a good go at the thing and see if I can get the hang of it.

From what I've seen so far it's clearly not a great "straight out of the box" experience.

Still, as I say, final judgement reserved until further tweaking has been done!

I'll let you know how I get on.

Cheers!

Our NITs (N800 and N810) are pretty much custom devices. We all install only the applications that we are personally thrilled with. For instance, I love Maemo Mapper. I look at a map of where I live and can overlay either weather data (rain) or highway traffic congestion data before going to work. I love Skype and chat and also talk with my friends and family throughout the day. I love MyTube with is a YouTube viewer. Also, all of the pictures that I take with my cell phone can be viewed on my N800 through the bluetooth connection. For viewing "memos" or a "to do list" I installed a screen applet called Quick Clip.

Hello everybody! Moja, here. Coming to you from the mid-south of USA - near Memphis, TN.

Welcome, and thanks to totololo for starting this thread!

I got my N800 as they were being cleared-out to make room for the N810. I've been away from the forums for a while, but got interested again when I needed to re-flash my N800 and noticed all of the cool new projects like Mer (http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=30397) and Tear (http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=28539). I am relatively new to Linux and have learned a lot from these forums. I mostly use my N800 when I'm near Wi-Fi for using the web (of course), Skype, and listening to music.

Best wishes to all of you. Long live this community.

Hey there, guys! I know I'm a little late to the party, but I just bought an n810 from eBay. I've been lurking here for a couple weeks, and I'm impressed with the community that's developed under the NIT's. I love my little n810 so far, and I'm hoping to learn a lot more about it from you guys. :)

I've been using Linux off-and-on since 2005 or so, but this is my first real delve into the handheld world. (Seriously, my cell phone is a really cheap little guy, almost 4 years old, haha.) I'm really impressed at how much like a desktop PC the NIT's are, except way way smaller.

Hi all...just received my N800 about 3 days ago. Pretty slick device although I have had to flash the thing already...locked keyboard! The first important lesson I have learned is that you don't want to let the battery run completely down. I think that may have led to the prob however i did download some software to it just before it went dead.

Hi,

Long story short: I really wanted to like N97 and have it as my new phone. Alas, after a brief experimentation it became clear that it wasn't so. In the past I really liked N810 to the point where I almost bought one. However dealbreaker was that it wasn't phone. And I tend to forgot to have along one "extra" device.

Taking these facts into account I believe that I'll but my wagers to N900 being my next phone.

That ansers the "why". "What" and "where" are easy to answer too. To gather information on device and platoform and later become productive (yeah, right ;) memember of community.

Hello,

I've registered a few weeks ago in order to get some help with Tear and broken registries. I purchased my n810 from Ebay in January '09. I'm late making this post!

I'm in the field of education: in the classroom for eight years and on to other things for the last three and counting. I use the n810 to make presentations (Bluemaemo); take notes at meetings, convert and fill out forms and gather signatures, doodle, etc. etc. (Xournal); complete online reports, conduct on-the-spot research, check Microsoft Exchange calendar, email, contacts (Tear, other browsers); edit and create documents (abiWord, OpenOffice 3 w/ easy debian); impress coworkers, and much, much more.

Outside of work I play music and movies (Canola); surf the internet (above-mentioned browsers); view and edit bluetooth-synced video and pictures taken by my smartphone (File manager, Gimp); browse youtube videos (@scene); let my five-year-old with mild autism have tons of fun (Theremin, Boxar - he loves to make and listen to music - and too many games to mention that we both enjoy).

I have no problems at all with the iPhone - I actually think it's an amazing device. I just feel that I have more freedom and opportunities to tweak and fiddle a little bit with the n810 and my windows mobile 6.1 smartphone working together (did I mention Maemo PAN? PAN and DUN make me feel invincible! Who needs WiMAX?!?!!).

Speaking of tweak and fiddle, I would not have the ability or confidence for either without this forum and its members. Your support enables thousands of us novices get the most out of our devices. Thank you all! And thanks to all of you that have developed hundreds of great apps free for us to use and enjoy.

Hello,

I came here because of the Nokia N900, Had a look at an secondhand N810 but the lack of an phone option put me of (haven't got enough pockets to put it all).
I'm an Nokia guy and I'm using my phone for 70% Internet and 28% messaging and 2% calling.

I hope to get an N900 soon and then get familiar with the Maemo OS and maybe create my own stuff (had some programming experience through school).

Hello!!!
for the last 6 months i did an intensive use of my IT, thanks to this site i had a lot of fun.
Just a bit sad because when i finally found a decent chess program (eboard/xboard + crafty) i saw the port was not being maintained anymore. there is only a port to OS2007. now i am trying to figure out how to re-compile it, but i am dolorously fresh to that thing.
anyone can help?

thanks maemo community!

hi guys,

i bought myself a n810 about two weeks ago.

It's much better than the N97, which really sucks.

I've got some problems with the maemo itself, cos I'm a windows/symbian fan.

Well, it's like a new world... :D

I finally got the dualboot-thing working with console-tools.

Can somebody give me links to easy guides (for linux noobs) for installing kismet and aircrack on N810, please?

I've got some problems getting the libs installed.
I've read about it, that it have to be installed using xterm, but dunno exactly how cos i cannot access any files in "MyDocs" from xterm.

Please, can somebody help me with a good tutorial or howto?

Thank you

Regards from germany

hi guys. I'm a new member and I'm very new to the maemo community. I hope to create some apps/widgets for the n900. My first project is a virtual keyboard that is more reminiscent of a standard keyboard layout.

I stopped coding in linux a loooog time ago so it may take me a sec to get into the swing of things again. Last night I set up my vmware server and Ubuntu virtual machine. I got the sdk and necessary tools installed so I'm on my way. I've been coding in Visual Studio creating mfc apps exclusively for the past 5 years but hopefully I can make the transition back to linux somewhat gracefully :).

Regarding your inquiry, I believe there are reasons why there is few or no documentation for aircrack directed to newbies...

G'day Maemo's, I'm Mark and it's good to b here! I've had my N800 for about 18 months or so and have been using this site as a guest since. Now with the whole thing going mainstream and all the excitement, I've climbed aboard. I've been a Nokia fan since the 232...anybody remember? 232, 5800, 7650, 7650, N90, N80, N95 classic, N800, almost N97!, but now, soon.....N900!! I'm also an Apple fan but didn't wanted to join the Jesus Phone Club knowing the multitasking limitations on that platform. I can't code and have never used the terminal...
I'm loving Maemo none-the-less and hopin these new machines rock my world. I think igotta agree that S60 with it's millions of lines of code is now a bit tardy! Time to move on...

Peace Maemo's! Just joined before I buy. I've coded for Linux in a past life, want a non-cell phone PDAish tablet to play with and possibly develop for. I know the N900 is just out, but price tag too rich for me at the moment (and don't need phone bill). I'm currently thinking of getting a N810 off ebay, but I have some noob questions.
-Most used units say 128M RAM yet it's expandable to 2Gig internal. Did they really ship with only 128M?
-Will support for os2008 continue for long or will maemo 5 port to the n810? I think the answers are no and no. :(
-Any essentials I should look for that might be critical but not sold with the NIT on ebay?
-Any flaws that flag larger issues to completely avoid?
-What are you thoughts on 'must have' apps? How much can be installed at the same time?

I'm sure I'll have more questions once I get one and start playing.

So, hello and thanks for all the help already!

RAM = 128 MB + 128 MB swap file. The 2GB is internal storage.

Welcome, Jrtweetwer. Before you invest in an N810 you might want to search this forum to compare it to the N800. I bought a new N800 on eBay for $150. Instead of the 2gb limit on the internal memory, the N800 has a standard SD socket ( I have 16gb internal memory). I use a bluetooth GPS receiver that works much better that the one built into the N810. If a built-in keyboard is a must, then forget about the N800.

Thanks for the info. I just got an n810 and didn't do too bad on the price. It took me a while to check out all the hardware as it didn't have some of the software installed. But it looks like its all working.

Points about buying used:
-Who knows what's installed. Is it hacked?
-How do you get x working again? Currently sound doesn't work from the web browser (Flash? issue.)
-What is the version of os installed? os2008 Ver:5.2008.43-7 What does that mean?

So far I like what I have and it seems to work. I just need to make it mine.

Peace!

Future seems brighter for maemo. Soon more and more utility based apps might come up!!;)

Hello

This is a nice thread to welcome the new comers.
I have joined this discussion boards this year because of my N810.
I am from India, studying 12th grade science stream.
With the upcoming use of WIFI in India, people have started using the internet tablets too. This makes me come here.
Nokia's doing a gr8 job when it comes to maemo devices.
Future seems brighter for maemo. Soon more and more utility based apps might come up!!;)
All my queries are answered to.
Thanks to all wonderfull people.

Best regards,
Avnee.

welcome avnee! we're all pretty optimistic about maemo's future here too :)

I just signed up last night... currently have an iPhone 3GS on at&t but preordered the N900 in anticipation of a switch back to T-Mobile. I've just hit a wall with the closed-platform nature of the iPhone. Looking forward to developing/port apps to Maemo

Welcome, Hypnotik, to the forum. I was hoping I could use an N900 with Verizon carrier. T-mobile has terrible coverage where I live.

Yeah... here in NYC t-mobile actually has pretty decent coverage while at&t's network is collapsing from the number of iphones. my friends using the G1 report no problems with their 3g speed

Hi guys!

I still use an N82 and waited quite a bit for a worthy successor. The Iphone does some things really great but since the majority of people don't care for multitasking, openness or high resolution, apple does neither. Android seems way cooler in most respects but I won't wait another year for an Android device with decent specs. Now along comes Nokia, finally abandoning their Symbian-only phones stubornness. It's still unclear to me whether or not the N900 will feature an electronic compass which is mandatory for augmented reality. I guess AR will become a bigger topic in the near future - at least for wow-effect if not for practical value. Obviously a bunch of other potential buyers are anxiously awaiting an official confirmation. I could live without capacitive display and fm-receiving functionality and hope for prosperous application development/adaptation from linux but I could not justify shelling out 600 euros knowing that AR won't happen on the N900.

Cool forum, anyway! If i finally opt for the N900 and if studying computer science (which I just enrolled in) will help me with the geekier possibilites the device offers, I look forward to spend some time in this forum.

Hello!

I am interested in joining the Maemo community, but there are some confusions holding me back. I don't want to cross post, so here's the link to the post I made earlier http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=31460&goto=newpost

In any case, looking forward to more action!

Hi. I'm Hook from Brighthand. Former Palm user, now with a Nokia 5800 and am quite interested in the N900. I'm not sure what time frame my budget will let me get one, so I figured I'd start lurking over here and learn as much as I can in the meantime. I'm in no hurry. I love my 5800.

I'm PDA/pocket computer centric in my approach. My 5800 has a gophone SIM in it and for $5 a month i can use 3G if I need it, but I rarely do (maybe 1-2 Mb a month), the rest is wifi.

So I will be mostly quiet at first while I pick things up and will hold off posting questions until I understand enough to know what to ask.

Cheers to you all.

The n900 is confirmed to have fm radio receiver. Nokia generally includes that as an stand alone app after the device is released. I dont know why they chose to do that but from past experience i am pretty sure that they will release the fm radio upp very soon. I hope that is the same case for digital compass.... but no one has confirmed that yet.

Hi guys,
I've registered today. I'm french too "bonjour le monde" (sorry for my english mistakes :p ).

I've got a N800 looking forward for buying a N810. I've got my N800 for about 2 years may be. I've lost interest in it (went back to a plam lifedrive <3) untill recently when I learnt how to reduce battery consumption (thanks to this forum). For now I'm tweaking it to make it the best personnal geek assistant :).
So that it.

I, too, have an N82 and I love it, but I guess the time has come to say goodbye. Already drooling for the Rover.

Now, the only thing you can expect me to contribute to the community is constant whining about f***ed up features, but at leat I

Hi everyone.

I've signed up due to my interest in the N900. I have been looking for a new phone for a while, and the N900 seems just what I've always wanted.

I'm a heavy Ubuntu/Debian user, so hopefully will find it easy to tinker with as well.

As Nokia in Australia don't have an online store, I've pre-ordered the N900 in the UK, and am getting it sent on to me!

Hello, all, my name is Rob and I'm from the Boston, MA, USA area. I had been convinced that Android was my future (once some decent hardware emerged) but then along came the N900. I'm a 770 and n810 owner. The 770 has been retired to programmable-remote duty (via custom webserver/Tira2 IR transceiver/Insteon devices) but the n810 is still used in larger capacity. I'm a long-time programmer, mostly in the Win32 realm, and I'm particularly interested in automation. Since I've joined this site while doing research on the N900 I've expanded my use of the n810 but that's resulted in, suddenly, abysmal battery life (the vampire has visited me as well, it seems). I'll leave that discussion for the appropriate thread.

Anyway, my intent is to learn me some QT and get involved in development for the n900. I haven't pre-ordered mine yet, although I'm on the verge of doing so at Amazon.

I live in iPhone hell over here and I'll be psyched to be sporting a great alternative.

Hi there.

My interest in Maemo began a couple a months ago when I had to write a document comparing the several mobile platforms that are available. Of all of those that I reviewed, Maemo was the one I liked the most.

Besides, I have been wanting to buy a new mobile phone for some time, as my N95 8GB, as much as I love it, is getting a bit old. Therefore, when Nokia announced the N900, I knew that was the phone I was going to buy and registered here.

I work in the R&D department of a quite big IT company and we are investigating quite a lot about mobile services for mass transit users. I would love to see such services running on my N900. Ah, if it only had a magnetometer and J2ME support...

Kind regards.

My name is Bas. My main reason for being on the forum is my interest in the N900. I was already interested in the N810 some time ago, but as I am not into two device solutions, I went with a smartphone instead. The N900 has rekindled my interest in Maemo.

My recent history in smartphones is the Nokia 9500 Communicator and Nokia E71. I hope to be the proud owner of an N900 in less than a month, as I have already preordered one. I particularly like the raw power, multimedia aspects, custimaisable desktop, dashboard, browser and openness of the device.

Hi. I pre-ordered an N900 on Amazon yesterday. I have an average background in scripting / programming, system administration, and "web stuff". I remember friendly debates with friends about the future of converged portable devices. 10 years ago it was hard to imagine, having no cell phone and an old Jordana, that I would ever want something like the N900. But now I would consider any portable device without a network connection (be it cell or wifi or other) an anachronism, frankly. I'm hoping the N900 will truly be useful as a 'computer in my pocket', and thinking of it in that way was how I justified the price. I will also finally put my unlimited data plan to good use.

Looking forward to participating in many positive discussions as well.

Greetings - this seems a great group - hope to be a useful member of it before too long.

I've been in software QA for years but am a newb on Maemo and recent Nokia devices.

I was patiently waiting for Palm to bring out my next smart phone upgrade, having been a loyal Palm/Treo user for years, (used to test Palm apps way back) but Palm lost me forever with the very disappointing Pre. So I was just about to cave and buy the lovely looking but rather expensive N97. Was going to get StyleTap Platform for Symbian to help transition me off the Treo. Then Nokia had to bring out the N900!

I wish the N900 had the same slide n tilt form factor as the N97, but the N900 specs are mostly so much better. The more I read about Maemo, the more interested I am in trying something new and learning like crazy so I can get involved.

I'm hoping the N900 will run Garnet VM (to wean me off a few Palm apps until more are available for the N900). But my many efforts to find out if it will function at all or if there's any chance Garnet VM will be ported to Maemo 5, have been fruitless so far.

I figure I have to try it myself and see. I can't wait for delivery confirmation from Amazon!

All the best...jow

I just got my Nokia N810 and so far love it, it is an invaluable asset for school work and entertainment. I am looking to upgrade to a N900 when i get the money. i am still learning about developing applications and linux systems but I do want to attribute to the maemo community in any way i can.

Nice to meet you all. :)

Hello from maemo-noob from Finland. After reading thru 40 pages of a single thread in a row I thought I need to register. N900 will be my first tablet, coming from Nokia 9300 and E90, will be interested to see the new form factor for me. Thanks for having me and I hope to enjoy Maemo Talk even more after registering.

Welcome, Jow, to the forum!

Hello from Finland I'm new here and also in Maemo. I'm testuser of N900 so I hope I can find some important info from this site.

Is there a bug or is it ment so that i cannot use developmet sector with this registering?

You can access that section, too, koivjann. It just requires a separate registration right now. They're working on a single log in but it'll take time. Welcome to the t.m.o forums.

Another Newbie here!

I'm an RF (radio frequency) designer, in the past I've worked on handset designs for several companies, and also worked for Nokia on base station designs a few times.

Tried and hated WinMob so dropped back to my trusty Treo.

Acquired an N810 to learn a bit more Linux, now (im)patiently waiting for the N900 to appear!

I'm not new, but I've been lurking for many moons (I've been called an eminence gris a few times in my life...). I have never posted much (If I have nothing to add to a conversation, I don't, and honestly, the way things are around here, a simple search has answered many if not all of my questions before I bothered everyone with my ignorance :)

I am finally moved to put something in here because of what happened in another thread (http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=32253) which has profoundly moved me, and finally forced me to get off my *ss and do something. The community round here has shown itself in many ways, and none more powerful than this example, as strong and more than capable of supporting itself and its members. Kudos to you all. I fell, after this long time reading and thinking, that I know many of you already, so saying hello is the least I can do. I'd like to do more. We'll see.

It's possible to lurk for a long time, and in fairness I have been on and off with my n810 relationship (n900 ordered though...) for more reasons than just the device. I do have an idea for an app that because of the kickstart to my rear end I'm now actively working toward design and execution of (might take a while, but there you are - I'm not the coder many people around here are).

I'm happy to be able to say hello formally, and just perhaps now start to enter into the community as much as I can (which is all we can ask). Pleasure to meet you all.

Hello community!

This is my first intro to Maemo. Though many people do not know me yet, I have been reading these forum since day1 touching Maemo. Yet, I am as thrilling as you guys waiting for N900 coming.

There are many great developers motivating me to register, especially OneDotZero is a hit for me! I wish I could learn more from these people.

Open-source community is my long time friend. Debian Potato is my first Linux distro, and involved a few development projects on KDE (just for my joy). And trying to lure some friends to have fun with penguin (but most of my friends are FreeBSD alignment)!

'ow do.

I'm a long time Symbian user who's been longing for a device which can do everything the Series 5(mx) could do, as well as all the modern telephony/network/multimedia gubbins. I suspect the N900 may be all that and more, and will be getting my hands on one in the next few months. I may try my hand at the development side of life next year when some current work commitments permit, despite not having done any programming since some embedded device C stuff for my degree all those many moons ago. Till then I'll be popipng up with my ha'penn'orth on the way forward for other folks' efforts...

Should probably have shown my face in here before I started asking questions!

I never even heard of Maemo till yesterday. I might well have thought you were talking about a lost clownfish... I was saving up for an SE satio. Then I happened to spot a reference to something called n900.

And now I'm here. I believe in open source - though I'm not (ever) clever enough to be a developer or progammer. I am a great one for dreaming up ideas for what things can or can't do! Being a 'people' sort of person I'm more interested in what a thing can do with connecting people.

A long, long time ago I have something called a velo. Then, after a few pdas I discovered a treo 600 - and that's when I learned what an amazing community the developer network is. I'm glad to be here - if a little lost right now!

Now that i can finally reply to threads i d like to say hello.

I never owned a mobile, as i never really needed one (well thats quite unique in my acquaintance for a 35 year old male).
Following all the linux phones coming up in the last few years i thought there will be the perfect device coming, that will break my mobilelessity (new word i just created :) )

And then i read of the N900, and now cant wait getting it into my hands. I wait impatient for this toy.

Just to make it complete: I am build 1974 in germany, living near cologne.

A hi from me too. Been lurking on the board for about 2 weeks now, so time to introduce.

Have been a long time nokia fan and have been using S60 phones for a while now. Recently switched to a xperia X1 (windows mobile), bad experience with carkit compatibilty and other stuff too.

Then switched to my current phone, a samsung i8910. About the same hardware as the upcomming n900, killer screen , s60, etc.

Sadly enough, disapointed with the software samsung put on the phone. It's S60, and we know S60 is aged.... but at least nokia does a decent job in making it run well and as bug free as possible. The same can NOT be said for samsung. They hold features as a stupid 3D task switcher as more important then an actually correctly functioning bluetooth implementation or bugs and other irretating features in other places. So sad... but it's got to go!

So... the n900 seems like the ultimate device. My biggest worry with it, it SAP support. Or rather rSAP. I have a built in carkit which is only able to use that protocol and I do really need it. From what I understand in the bluez project, it is beying worked on. Hope to see it soon. Seeying it's nokia carkit and protocol... I would think it arrive pretty quickly. :)

Anyway. Hi there! Hope to make usefull contributions in the future! :)

Hi,

I've registered a little while ago but never took the time to say hello. So let's correct that.

I'm a software developer, currently living in Ireland but originally from France. I've been an unashamed smartphone geek ever since I got myself a Sendo X back in 2004 (or was it 2005 ? - I can't remember). I spent the last 6 years doing .NET development (some cool projects) in the education and financial sectors. Have also been helping out a few startup projects whenever I could.

Over the last two years though, I started to realize that smarpthone software is what I really wanted to do. It took me a while to bite the bullet (it's quite comfortable to get a regular salary) but I finally gave in and quit my job. The plan is to spend the next few weeks getting familiar with development on the iPhone, Symbian and Maemo platforms (thinking of Android and WebOS too of course but I'll start with the devices I already have), then see if I can find some freelance work while working on my own apps. We'll see what happens.

Bought an N810 a few months ago out of curiosity - this is what brought me here. I was actually pleasantly surprised with what the N810 could do and how relatively easy to use it was. Still definitely not a mainstream device though. The N900 on the other side looks just amazing. This is in fact the first time I've been excited about a new smartphone since the Nokia E61 some 3 years ago (which was my first phone with a proper keyboard, proper big screen, proper web browser and wifi). Spending £500 on a N900 wouldn't be sensible at all given that I just left my job but I'm pretty sure I won't be able to resist... Plus I've got the excuse of needing one to do some development for it ;)

I'll be at the Maemo Summit at the week-end so I'll probably see a few of you guys there. Looking forward to it. Also hope to be able to contribute a bit to the Maemo world.

Hello. I am adam917 from Philly. I have known about Maemo for a while and though it was cool to see an open mobile OS for once but held off buying any device due to the lack of a GSM/UMTS phone stack & SIM slot. I was ecstatic upon hearing about the N900 that is to be released soon and more recently, I found out that we have a new ISP player in town called Clear that has soft-launched WiMAX here. I am thinking of getting the N810 WiMAX Edition if it is worth getting. I heard a few other cities have WiMAX and so it could come in handy if I can roam whilst out of town.

I now hope to see more Maemo stuff being released in the future. :-)

Hi guys!

Im adding another swede to the mix :)

Been developing apps for the various smart-phones (iphone, palm, ovi, etc) for about a year now, so Im pretty fed up with all the compromises you have to accept due to the limited format and technology.

But this platform seems to have all the technical qualities I want in a phone (albeit not the openess of android to other manufacturers than nokia), and comes closest to a real computer.

In sum, it appeals to the tech-nerd in med :P

Also, Ive always put off getting into linux but this platform gives me a reason to get into it for sure.

Hopefully I can learn a lot from this community and ultimately become a contributor as well.

Hi!

I've followed these forums (and iTT) for long, and I'm planning to do a couple of my own software projects on the platform (Flight Planning software, cartography/GIS things). Long-time Linux guy, my first PC (in 1996) ever had Redhat 4 :)

My work is not directly related to the Maemo platform, so I'm mostly doing these things as a hobby.

I work in IT, have programmed in C++. C#, Java (and all the way back to COBOL and Fortran but don't hold that against me) and some Python although these days I am more a database geek.

Will be glad to get back to a Maemo platform and the N900 seems like it gets rid of some of the N800 shortcomings.

For now, I'll just be browsing the forums to see what's coming.

I have ordered my N900 and am waiting for the end of the month when it will be dispatched. I am moving from Vodafone to Tmobile in the UK (not sure if this was a sensible idea) but we will see and it is only a 12 month contract so i could easily go back.

My old Xperia will be handed down to my girlfriend (who is a technofobe) so i am interested to see how she gets on with it. I have already upgraded the ROM on it so it is running windows mobile 6.5 with SPB mobile shell on top. It isnt a bad phone really but i wanted a change and thought the N900 looked like a good idea.

I would like to get octave working on the N900.

Wow after about 15 years I'm back programming on a unix environment! Why . . . because the future of OS just got interesting and if nokia, apple, google, palm can agree and unite on a base MS may just have a real competitor!

Hi, guys!

I'm gonna buy a N900 and hope it will be as nice as I imagine. Of course I will participate in the community if I like the my little friend ;) That's why I'm saying: HELLO EVERYONE! =)

I wrote a few programs for Windows using .NET but never wrote anything for Linux. I just hope it's not too hard and I can make some cool apps

Hi I'm Hass from the UK, been a Nokia fan for a long time and have been blown away by what maemo is all about, never had one of the Tablets featuring Maemo so this is all new to me.

Looking forward to receiving my Nokia N900 at the end of the month, for those of you in the Uk who want a cheap sim free N900 check out the N900 UK Networks thread, I have added a post on how to get the N900 for £310.61

A Swedish guy here, who'd heard a bit about the previous tablets but didn't care much until the N900 came up. It'll be my first smartphone.

Hello!

registered today. Awaiting my preordered N900. Want to code a little again. Coded some bluetooth sailtracker in midp in 04/05, but was not satisfied with the performance. As much as I like java on a desktop I hate it on a phone. I started fiddling a little with qt.

Hope that it comes soon. Considering switching to android...
