Google Voice has announced that they are starting to give out the invites today. They announced it on Twitter and said it will be on NBC news today. They also said that they have a massive invite list so please be patient. I hope I'm near the top of the list.

I foolishly didn't sign up back when it was GrandCentral because I only had a desktop. Then when I got my laptop Google had purchased them and had taken down signups. Then around when I got my tablet this google mystery invite system. Hope they send out invites soon.

Anyway gv web setup wasnt difficult.
So add me to the noobs that will indeed be adding to the bug jar.
Doesnt work at work (but they filter out a lot - and limit things to port80), didnt work in airports/hotels, but did at home...
Time to RTFM. ;-)

So, is Google Voice something along the lines of Skype, but without the "big brother" spying? :)

No. See Google's about page (http://www.google.com/googlevoice/about.html), and the wikipedia article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grandcentral).

Well, I did read the Wikipedia article before posting so as not to sound like a 'tard, but what I read made it sound an awful lot like Skype. I guess maybe I'm still not totally understanding the concept. o_0

mine took just as long. i'm impressed with the fact that they had manhattan area codes available. the voicemail transcription service is nice.
I am a little bummed. I got my invite last week, and was not able to use it since it's open to US IP's at the moment. Now, it says that the invite is no longer valid. :(
I tried going through a US proxy, but that did not work either. Oh well - hopefully they officially open it to Canadians. Knowing us, we'll settle for nothing at all, and display a big smile ;)

while skype is a voip service that can make and recive pots calls at local rates, google voice is about having a single number attached to multiple physical phones.
and yes, you can get much the same effect by having multiple skype enabled devices...
btw, i am a bit surprised that they choose to route via gizmo rather then provide its own sip server...

I wouldn't say "without the big brother spying...It is google, after all... :)
In essence, Google Voice is a front-end to all of your phones. You can route calls from google voice to any combination of home- and mobile phones. For instance, say your best friend calls your GV number. You can program it to ring your mobile and home phone simultaneously. Or your wife's sister calls, you can set it up to ring her mobile, then if no answer, ring the home line, and so forth.
