Has anybody managed to get the Plucker eBook Reader working on a retail 770? I've installed the app but when I launch the program it displays that is loading for about 5-10 seconds and then stops and looks as if its quit and was never launched.
I used the installer from here (http://oss.kernelconcepts.de/maemo/plucker.shtml) (the deb package).

To answer my own question I was missing a required dependancy libsqlite0_2.8.13-2_arm.deb
I installed that and now it launches.

Hope you let us know your experiences using Plucker.
Using the 770 as an e-book reader will be one of my primary uses.

I got Plucker to launch but when I try to open an ebook I downloaded from Project Gutenberg (A straight text file) it just doesn't do anything.
Has anyone managed to get it to work? I had the initial problem of it not launching (Which adding the above libary fixed) but now it runs but won't add ebooks to the library.

I think it's a bug. After adding a channel, the application needs to be restarted to get it listed.

Nope. Still nothing.

Not having a 770, I can't answer your question in the affirmative.
But I have used the Plucker Viewer in Maemo, and written a tutorial on how to use Plucker in this environment which can be found at http://topicalweb.com/making-ebooks/
Operation on the 770 should be identical to that in Maemo (I mean, that's the point of Maemo).
Hope that helps.

I'd read that before I started. Everything works up to selecting a book to add to the library. Then when you drop back to the main screen it's not there.

Works for me :) Try "Alice in Wunderland" from Maemo plucker homepage

I had this problem when I was starting out. In the tutorial it says:
In order for Plucker Viewer to add a book to its library database, the .pdb file needs to be in the MyDocs folder (or a subfolder, such as eBooks)
In the development environment the path to this folder is:
Kanotix/scratchbox/users/knoppix/home/knoppix/MyDocs
The Kernel Concepts guys straightened me out on this, and when I created the right folder everything was smooth. What folder are you putting the books in?

As for RogerS question, the plucker in Maemo behaves little bit strangely. I dont know whether this behavior is normal for other devices also, but on Nokia I have difficulties to delete soemthing from the library and I cannot change fonts. But once you get to reading it feels very nice. The arrow buttons are little bit tough to press, but otherwise not a single complain.

Works from the memory card also

Only pdb files? Won't the prc files from Gutenberg work?

I have a directory in the root of my memory card called MyDocs. I put a pdb file in there and Plucker still won't add it to the library

There serveral different format hidden behind ".pdb" Most likely you have a Palmdoc.pdb format aht you need convert to plucker.pdb.

I'm getting closer. I used Plucker desktop and the tutorial posted on the previous page to convert a text file to plucker pdb format. This added ok to the Plucker database but when I try to view it I just get a blank page.

I suggest using a pdb file that you know can be read by Plucker -- one of those from the Plucker site, or Alice in Wonderland, or one of the other examples from Kernel Concepts. At least you should rule out it being a problem with what you're trying to read or open.

The Alice in Wonderland pdb works but anything I create using Plucker desktop doesn't.

During the installation of plucker you had an option to add "convert to plucker" to txt and html file popup menus. Write a simple text file (just a sentence in english) and try to convert it.

Try using http://sourceforge.net/projects/sunrisexp (Sunrise), worked brilliantly for me for creating .pdb's for the 770's plucker reader.

Same problem. The end result when displayed in Plucker is a blank page.
As for Sunrise. Wow. I have no idea what to do with that one. Does it even accept txt files?

Confused: I downloaded 2 days ago the file plucker_0.28-1.8-6_arm.deb and installed it but it didn't launch. What is the latest/working version for Plucker/retail 770?

Some progress: I found Pluckers port/home page (=?), oss.kernelconcepts.de and there a quite hidden info that Plucker Reader for 770 needs two (!!) files, plucker
itself and libsglite-library-file!
Voilá, now Plucker launches but but but I cannot open any pdb-file for reading, Pluckers library function is not working.
Do I need some library file more?
The info for _ordinary users_ seems to be surprisingly hidden and complicated.

After installing Plucker it didn't show any documents. I tried to use function "Add" to one document but nothing showed in the main page. After restarting program, there was the same document which I added in the main page, which could be opened and read. So I added every Plucker PDB file I had (four documents/in MMC/from memoware) one by one with Add-function and restarted Plucker. Voilá, my four book library was ready to be read!
Working: Yes, Cumbersome: Yes.

Though done as Titus adviced: no eBooks in Plucker Library.
What are the .deb-files of the Plucker installer you have installed to your 770?

Yessh, some progress: 770/Plucker works and "works" (!) but only (=?) with those couple of the model eBooks introduced at the Plucker site. Unfortunately I did my first tries with my old eBooks (same .pdb extention), which 770/Plucker seems to be unable to open. So - "wrong" subformats should be translated to 770/Plucker-format, I suppose, but how.
BTW: maemo's Application Cataloque states now firmly that its even "ready" applications (and corresponding info) are for developers only, not for any kind of
"end-using".
And let's remember that 770 Apps Installer declares before the actual installation that the function is "for developers only"!!!!

The 770 should be _clearly_ very suitable for eBook reading. I have used my Nokia 6600 for such a reading in special situations but what a difference between 6600 and 770. The only minus, now, is the lack of decent Reader and, generally speaking, too large variety of eBook-file formats.
But the Plucker Reader for 770 works at least this way :
- Plucker seems to be unable to show "old" or "non-plucker"-.pdb-files.
- for conversion I tried Plucker's own (Windows) Converter program, but it was for me far too complicated, so no success.
- Project Gutenberg has on its site an amazing number of _free_ eBooks (though quite old literature), and the nice thing is that they have there Online Conversion Utility for their every (?) eBook. It produces Plucker readable files (don't be confused about the strange file names). The 770 Plucker shows them beautifully!

When I open the 7.7 mb CIA World Factbook with color images (at memoware (http://memoware.com/?screen=doc_detail&doc_id=15510&back=main) ), I have no problems in Plucker Viewer on the 770. The 225 or so countries and dependencies are each created from their own page and link to the Table of Contents. No one page is very long.
But any book I open made from a single text file -- one long page as it were -- stops short after approximately 28,500 characters (exclusive of markup) when I'm reading it in the 770. This includes texts from several sources, including PG.
This happens even when Plucker Viewer is the only app open.
Are others experiencing the same thing?
