What can we as a community do to get Adobe Air Support on the n900, and maemo in general?

Hold our breath?...wakka wakka wakka

Seriously, there is an air installer for Linux (which I assume runs on Debian). I honestly don't think it'll be that hard for Air to run on Maemo. Assuming that Adobe and Nokia are working at least somewhat hand-in-hand on Flash, I would expect to see Air support forthcoming.

Considering how god-awfully-slow Air applications run on my desktop though, I'm a little leery about how they'll run on the tablet; as Air is ridiculously memory intensive.

I hate to respond to my own post, but this post on the Air blog talks about Adobe releasing Flash for Android (which is supposed to be announced at the Adobe MAX event in two weeks), and that they are at least contemplating AIR support.

I realize Android isn't Maemo (the work to port it to Android I would think is actually greater...it's a VM running inside a VM), but this bodes well for mobile support.

Ti confirms Flash 10 and Adobe AIR on OMAP – 2010 (http://www.umpcportal.com/2009/04/ti-confirms-flash-10-and-adobe-air-on-omap-2010/). That item is from april 2009.

Cool, but is there some way we can "demand" it as a community lol?

You can try submitting this form that the Adobe guys mentions in that blog entry (I have no idea how effective it is):

https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform

You might also try to get as many other people as possible to submit it ;) (I have just done so).

what's the point of having Air running on the n900 as an app when you can run flash from the browser?

It seems to me you're pretty close to running Adobe Air on the N900 if you install the Garnet Palm emulator software. I forget the details; it's been awhile.

Agree, it would be pointless if the flash had worked. Raiffeisen Bank I use provides on-line services either via browser with flash or Adobe Air app. Flash does not work on N900, you can try to get login page here: https://www.r-bank.pl/newsbi/index.jsp?lang=en
and Adobe Air is non-existent... Yes, could throw away N900 and get iPhone, but I still unreasonably like Maemo..

Yamakasi: The purpose, and scope, of Air and Flash is very different. In a VERY simplistic description, Air can access "low" level OS functions, while Flash lives inside a little box called browser, limiting its action.

I am a Flex coder and have kept my fingers well crossed, eagerly waiting for Air to miraculously debut on Maemo. It would open a very wide coding community, and we could easily (immediately) port an immense array of apps.

Also, with Air, the learning curve for potential new coders is less steep as with qt, etc.

As for speed, if Adobe would port it natively and not by some emulative/hacking process, i am sure we could have a pretty darn good framework to work with.

Just my $.02. :)

and you expect a port from Adobe to maemo ?

Reason tells me i shouldnt, that Air will not come to Maemo, even more with this migration to Meego. But enjoying my N900 so much and being a flex dev, i cant let go of this thin thread of hope. :-)

Would be awesome if it did, though.

I am agree with you, I am also a flash developer and if I found some some way to deploy AIR apps on maemo then I could make and deploy number of apps on maemo repository.

I also agreed that AIR apps are much quicker and easier to learn as compare to QT where C++ knowledge is required:confused:.

Also if adobe can provide some native support of AIR for maemo then I am sure that performance won't be an issue at all.
