Language customization

With Maemo being a linux, can´t the system language be rather easily customized through modification of .po language files?

Yes (but "rather easily" is subjective).

I asked a Nokia Rep and they said out of the box, the N900 will support a plethora of languages (all readily installed). I'm buying my N900 here in Spain, and I would NEVER keep it in Spanish :P.
