Does anyone know if the current version of the yellow notes applet will work in fremantle? If not, has anyone ported it yet?

By providing a link it would be even possible to test this... ;-))

It won't work in Fremantle without at least some minimal changes. I'm not sure if there is anything too big. If nobody ports it soon (I'm pretty sure it isn't ported yet) I'll have a go.

Hi Schturman

Thanks for using Yellow Notes applet.

You can get updated version with the fix for the 'delete' button issue:

Hi Gabriel
Thanks for your app. I now tested the version 0.4.2 and I found a little bug.
When I write many lines, I can see on the right side the bar and 2 arrows for moving the page up and down. But the bar is not working, I can move the page up and down only with arrows.

i'd like to have another options on this app (if you can :-) )

* For writing - instead the small icon, I prefer clicking on the yellow window for opening the window of edit/write.
* For deleting - I'd like to see the icon a little bigger, but without changing the size of a top bar.
* For background - option for a system background color (like around the icons or like in the "Simple note widget"), also for top-bar.

And last one - I don't know for what I need the multiple pages (01,02,03...) :D or at least, can you to enlarge (a little) the icons of green arrows, for use with fingers ? And again without changing the size of a top bar. You can put them in the middle or in the left side of the top-bar.

Thank you ! :)

P.S. why you removed the transparency ?

Hi Schurtman

This version of Yellow Notes has the same look and feel that previous versions has. This means that it is not as finger friendly as expected for Maemo 5.

Regarding scroll bar not working, it is not really a bug, but a limitation from Desktop interaction design for Fremantle. Following paragraph from Desktop Widgets UI Guidelines explains it:
Within the desktop, you can interact with widgets using taps only. Due to the prioritisation of screen switching, widgets do not support dragging or swiping gestures. This ensures that desktop screens can be effortlessly panned even if they are filled with widgets

About your other suggestions (writing, deleting, background color, arrows), I'm already working in redesigning UI to make it finger friendly, since Fremantle is more finger oriented than previous Maemo versions. Transparency is also being worked on. I removed that part from Settings dialog, since it is not working yet.

Appreciate your feedback.

I noticed that after I installed this app, I got a little problem with other widgets...
I got the black bar above and on the left side of the Conversation widget and above/below + right/left of the Personal photo widget...
This problem disappear if I uninstall your app or remove from desktop and reboot...
See this pictures:

Applet is now in Extras-testing.

If you think Yellow Notes deserves to go into Extras repository, you can vote for it.

I just installed the Yellownotes application and firstly I would like to thank the developer/s. It’s a wonderful idea to have a small “sticky note” pad on the desktop. I used to have a lot of “notes” earlier in my symbian phone by typing quickly into SMS form and keeping in draft folders. That was the most convenient way of storing, syncing and accessing the small notes on the go like no. of your parking square in the big shopping mall parking garage with 7-8 floors and thousands of spots on each floor. Quick way to scribble down a phone number or some instructions for driving etc.

I would like to give a few suggestions for the improvements.
- please make it possible to use the pen to draw on the notes too. Sometimes you just want to draw a small sketch to explain something and still keep it visible on the desktop.
- please increase the size of the buttons to start the editing. Right now I have to use the pen to click on the “pencil icon” for editing or to move to the next note etc.

Here is the suggestion how I think it would be most handy way to implement these suggestions. Instead of having the small visible icons on the top right of the widget, make them appear with partial transparency on top of the note itself (big enough to press with the finger). This way when you touch the note, there are two arrows to move to the next or previous notes, free-hand drawing button, type with keyboard button or delete (recycle bin) button. The implementation could be very similar to the “Personal photo frame widget”. There you can move to next or previous photo by pressing the left or right edge of the widget. Recycle bin could be perhaps implemented in a way that if you keep it pressed for a second or two, the note can be deleted without additional confirmation. You could perhaps add small overlay buttons to change the color of the note on the fly. The buttons could be on the lower edge of the note in the same overlay with the rest of the buttons mentioned above.

I think that with these improvements, this app will become the most useful widget for the N900 users!

Thanks and good luck!

:)
Hagar

Transparency is supported now!!! Please try new version. You can get Yellow Notes v0.5 for Fremantle from Garage, still working on getting it into extras:

https://garage.maemo.org/frs/?group_id=205&release_id=3617

Hagar and all, still need to work on some usability and finger-friendly features and I appreciate all your suggestions, will try to include them in next release.

As always, feedback is appreciated.

Hi gerbick

There's a Diablo version for Yellow Notes. Specifically, what features you want to see in your N810/N800 Diablo device?

Hi Schturman

Sorry but yes, the 'black bars' issue was not addressed in this release since I couldn't reproduce the issue at that moment, you can even see this screenshot for YellowNotes and Conversations widget being shown without any problem.

I know that the problem isn't acceptable, therefore I'll work to solve it. Now that I could reproduce the problem, what I can suggest for the short therm to solve this without rebooting the device is:

1. remove affected widgets
2. add Yellow Notes
3. add previously removed widgets.

As you can see in the screenshot, you can have both widgets living together if you follow steps above.

Would love parity with the current, Freemantle version. No updates since 0.2 is a bit of a bummer.

Installed version 0.5

Good to see transparency working.

If the note is longer than the page length, a scrollbar appears on the right, but the scroll button doesn't act as such. Clicking or dragging has no effect.
The top and bottom arrows of the scrollbar turn white if clicked one more after scrolling to the limit.

I'd like to repeat a plea to allow for handwriting/sketching in the notes :)

Well, the workaround to remove the black frames/bars from the other widgets will have to be exercised after hildon-home was restarted, e.g. after each reboot. After reboot the black bars will be back again. :(

Thank you.
It's work, but only if I not touch the Yellownote widget. If I touch or write something in the Yellownote, the "Black bars" return to the Conversation and Personal Photo widgets...
Waiting for new version ;)

Found the cause for the black bars/lines in adjacent widgets and it's now fixed in version 0.5.2. You can get it from Yellow Notes page in Garage:

https://garage.maemo.org/frs/?group_id=205&release_id=3620

Seems that you need to remove/readd your affected widgets for one last time. No device reboot is required.

Thanks to all for using Yellow Notes and taking time to write down your comments. Feedback as always, is appreciated.

Hi SallyJane

Home widgets in Fremantle doesn't allow dragging, but scroll bar is needed to allocate content if it's larger than widget size.

You can tap on arrow to scroll content. Long tap will trigger Edit mode, so you need to do short taps. For next versions, I'm planning to moving away from scrollbar because of this issue.

Please be be patient and some upcoming version may offer sketching feature :)

Colour selector for note only allows selection of predefined colours.

Select colour from palette - it shows correctly in settings box, however actual note colour on desktop reverts to gray.

I would love it if we had this widget but could choost to use the notes backend in the PIM. I think it is just in a sqlite db, so you wouldn't really need source for calendar/notes/todo, just access to the db. note sure though, Correct me if I am wrong.
