Wrote to amazon.co.uk about the delay. This is the response I got:

Dear Paul,

Thank you for writing to us at Amazon.co.uk regarding your order #xxx-xxxxxxx-xxxxxxx.

I am sorry for any misunderstanding this issue had caused.

Once you place an order on our website that particular item gets automatically assigned to your order from our inventory which are in stock at the time you placed the order .

Rest assured I have researched your order #xxx-xxxxxxx-xxxxxxx for the item "Nokia N900 Sim Free Mobile Computer with Maemo 5 Software" and I am pleased to confirm that it is on time.

We still expect to dispatch your order by October 26, 2009 deliver it by the date listed in Your Account: October 29, 2009.

Once your order is dispatched from our Fulfilment Centre you'll receive an e-mail confirming the date, contents and method of delivery.

[...]

Anyway, I'll probably get an email from them tomorrow apologizing for the new delay ¬¬

I really hope that I ordered early on enough for them to be shipping mine out the 26th. :)

And by them I mean the Amazon US people

Just saw this at Amazon.

Item(s) Subtotal: $582.99
Shipping & Handling: $87.59
Super Saver Discount: -$87.59
-----
Total Before Tax: $582.99
Estimated Tax: $0.00
-----
Grand Total: $582.99

What the heck?
shipping is $87 (normal shipping)
and 2-day shipping is like $148 or something!!

and the cheapest (excluding FREE) is 1-day shipping which is around $19!!

What's happening with Amazon?? Guess, someone from Amazon has been reading this thread and trying to cash up on our impatience

@ vkv.raju:

Well if you're on the Amazon USA website and having it shipped to India then I'm sure thats why, otherwise if thats for US shipping I'm sure they are updating the listing and screwed up... it happens, we're all human.

I am shipping it to my friends address who is from Texas. So, those rates are for Texas and not for shipping to India.

Then it's an error on Amazons end, I'm sorry but believe shipping costs that much is a little overzealous. Just sign up for the free 3 month trial of amazon prime and you'll get free two day shipping.

For all cases of 'that one'. I'm fairly certain most of the (related and unrelated) internet has been linked to from this thread at this point, including the parts that don't yet exist (http://n900shipstomorrow.com).

I guess we all just have to wait for $RANDOM_DATE when the phone gets released to see which parts of the interwebs were correct...

yea its kind of sad to me that they don't have a release date .. i for one know they are under pressure though don't care how big a company is when you have thousands of people anticipating a device they payed near 700 for you got to get it right....

I got this robomessage from Amazon today:

Hello from Amazon.com.

We're still trying to obtain the following item[s] you ordered on September 14 2009 (Order# xxx-xxxxxxx-xxxxxxx).

"Nokia N900 Mobile Computer Unlocked Cell Phone"
{link removed}

Still want it? We'll keep on trying. To keep your order for this item open, please click the link below. Otherwise, we'll cancel your order on November 13 2009, if we haven't located it by then.

{link removed}

You'll still be able to cancel at any time before we ship it. If you want to cancel the item now, please click the link below:

{link removed}

If there are other items in your order, they'll be shipped according to the delivery estimates listed in the order details in "Your Account" ({link removed}).

By approving the new delivery estimate, you are letting us know that you still want the item(s) though they may arrive later than expected. If there are other items in your order, they will ship according to the delivery estimates listed in the order details in "Your Account" ({link removed}).

We apologize for the inconvenience caused by this delay.

*****
WHY WAS MY ORDER DELAYED?
While we do our best to adhere to our delivery estimates, our inventory is constantly changing based on information we receive directly from our suppliers. Occasionally, unexpected fluctuations in supply, delays during shipping, or changes in release dates for new products will add time to our original delivery estimate.

No mention of any delivery date. Only the confirm by 11/13/09, which is likely just 2 months after the order. "Trying to obtain" seems a little strange too, since the order page clearly said it was a pre-order.

Anyone else want to read between the lines?

October is the cruellest month,
Shipping dates out of the dead land,
mixing Memory and Masstorage,
stirring Dull rootpasswords with first snow.
Maemo Summit kept us warm, covering Earth in open source evangelism,
feeding A little life with dried tweets.
Amazon surprised us, coming over with early dates
With a shower of rain; we stopped in the colonnade,
And went on in sunlight, into the Flagship store,
And drank Vodka, and rumormongered in discussion boards for an hour.
Bin gar keine Russin, stamm' aus Finnen, echt deutsch.
And when we were children, staying at the archduke's,
My cousin's, he took me out on a sled,
And I was frightened. He said,
Marie, Marie, hold on tight, your N900 will ship soon.
And down we went.
In the mountains, there you feel free with open software.
I read, much of the night, and switched my pre-order for Nokia on-line store.
I will show you fear in a handful of dust and cancelled shipping dates.

I heard that some guy's brother in Arizona saw a warehouse full of them, but really it wasn't a warehouse, but a military base. It's connected by underground tunnel to ROSWELL NEW MEXICO (http://www.dramabutton.com).

The CIA is doing everything in its power to stop the the N900 (and its alien technology) from being released to the world, especially if anyone can program the thing. They even got the Nobel people to give Obama the peace prize so he has an excuse to the Scandinavian countries (with a stop in Espoo) to convince Nokia to just drop the product and move on.

Probably. My order on Expansys says 9 days, but the N900 oage says Nov 1st. Anyway, last week it said Nov 2nd, so a bump up of a day is fine by me...

Read your blog, enjoyed the viewpoint. Your usage model (wifi, occasionaly dataplan when traveling) is exactly mine in the foreseeable future. I use my N810 exactly like that (no phone, natch, but I use Boingo when traveling and the beastie is a lovely skype phone). The real reason for my N900 order is speed-related, I guess, but I also like shiny things, and I'll use the phone as a phone (no data) to replace my current 2 device strategy.

I have a similar problem: Here in finland the release date has been told to be in week 44-45 (original release date that was given when ordering in day one - I haven't put much weight on other speculations after that)

But since my iPhone does not show the week numbers, I do not know when this is !!!

I guess there is a part of the planet that keeps track and tells time by the week of the year, or the phase of the Solstice. Possibly they use a Sundial to tell time also! But for the rest of us, it makes no sense.

Even the finest phone is not the N900 itself.
Even the finest description is insufficient to define it.
Not through words and pictures can the N900 be experienced,
but once in hand, the N900 can be truly known.

Ordained Catholic priest and monk Thomas Merton said:
“The only way to get rid of misconceptions about the N900 is to experience it. One who does not actually know, in his own life, the nature of this Maemo breakthrough and this new level of phone functionality cannot help being misled by most of the things that are said about it. For Maemo 5 cannot be simply talked about. It cannot even be clearly explained to those who haven't experienced it. It must be lived to be understood. The more one tries to analyze it from a distance, the more he empties it of its real beauty, for the N900 experience is beyond the reach of verbalization and of rationalization.“ - from New Seeds of Contemplation

I visited the Nokia flagship store in London today (Regents Street) to see what the situation was. I was told that they will have the phones for sale November 1st or 2nd; there were more than just enough for preorder fulfilment available; that they would have an exclusive in Nokia stores for a month or so compare to other face to face retailers. Retail price was confirmed as being the same as current preorder price on Nokia site (£499.99).

Hope that gives some hope to the UK contingent!

Once I get my unit, i'll ship it off to "bestskinsever" so they can measure and produce a skin. (it will be hard to send it off) Then, they will have them available and i'll probably put them in my store as well. Great product and relatively inexpensive.

Rakia (also Rakija) is fruit brandy that is produced by distillation of fermented fruit; it is a popular beverage throughout the Balkans, Italy, and France. Its alcohol content is normally 40% ABV, but home-produced rakia can be stronger (typically 50% to 60%). Prepečenica is double-distilled rakia which has an alcohol content that may exceed 60%.

Rakia (also Rakija) is fruit brandy

Nakia N900 - It's a new fruit brandy. You can download the fruit that you want it to taste like from the Vakia Store. At the moment the only flavors are Prune and Durian but many more are being developed. Note that Durian requires root access. It is currently in stores, shipping, being produced, or in development (depending on who you believe).

I seem to remember from ordering my n810 that Nokia doesn't use Royal Mail for delivery (or not for express delivery)

Unfortunately Mobile Phones Direct do:

Mobile Phones Direct currently uses Royal Mail special delivery to dispatch your new phone. Due to distant selling regulations set by the Networks, all phones must be sent to the customers billing address as supplied for your network credit check. If you or another authorised person are not available to sign for the parcel, then you will be supplied with a card with your delivery reference and a contact telephone number for Royal mail. Your package will then be stored at the local sorting office where you can arrange to collect it, or have the goods delivered on an alternative date.

But there is also a ray of hope in their terms and conditions:

We cannot be held responsible for disruption to shipping caused by industrial disputes or action outside our direct control. If such disruption occurs you will be offered delivery via an alternative delivery or fulfilment company or a full refund.

On the other hand it would be hard to say what will happen first. Royal Mail end their strikes or Nokia releasing the N900.

Also, I recall the last time Royal Mail did a big strike they hired extra staff to do Special Delivery so that at least those were on time.

Why is Nokia so unreliable in their released date?? No wonder they're losing money and losing profit and losing competition because they can't even be straight forward with EVEN a simple thing: RELEASE DATE!!

Exactly! It's not good business, and people in this day and age don't want that. Nokia needs to wake up and realize they aren't the same in-demand company they were six years ago.

Don't really see how his statement was stupid... it's a simple question, with a difficult answer.

We were suppose to get at the end of Sept, then mid Oct, now end of Oct, early Nov, Dec--no one knows because we can't get an answer... so yeah it usually isn't good business strategy to play around with the people on which your income comes in from.

When a phone comes out companies give a date, if the date needs to get pushed back, then they say there will be a delay... you don't just ignore your customer base especially with a device like this that everyone wants.

well, official announcement: "oct 2009 in selected markets" is still valid.

has those announcements been official somewhere public or is it a rumour that has formed into a fact in ones head? if it is publicly announced, pics or it didn't happen.

statement was stupid. like "why in the hell the LHC @ Cern isn't running?!? why aren't they consistent with their timetables?!?". answer: something has come up. perioid.

Nokia gives estimates, and people who are waiting for the devices must know themself that those announcements aren't facts but an estimate of timetable with all information available at time.

Hahahaha I bet you two would wait until February if it was necessary.
I think the business revolves more around higher level strategies than release dates. Btw the frenzy these phone bloggers cause in the weeks before launching must be quite good for Nokia's business. The commotion preceeding N97's launch was like ..insane.. almost. No wonder they now sent out these "tryout" units to bloggers around the world. Guess Nokia wants the frenzy up a notch or two.

I am now 100% speculating but *launching* something like this must be a big operation. Getting the N900 to work with all services in OVI, PC Suite and what more must be a challenge.
Making sure support people are ready, 3rd party developers on par, software somewhat ready.
A phone like N900 like any other smartphone must demand quite a lot even after it has been sold in the form of updates and support.

Part of the tech-loving community want the phone launched as pre-production 'cause they can themselves update it once updates are available. Other part write long reviews bashing the software & phone & manufacturer for launching a phone that "doesn't feel it was ready for the market just yet".

From the info I got yesterday (Flagship store@Helsinki) Nokia will send the phones to the Flagship store and to the people that preordered at the same time.

Doesn't matter what your business strategy is, if you piss of your customer base kiss your company goodbye... When a company says one thing, but then does another without giving any explanation on when the product will be released people will tend to start having doubts... all we want is a date, thats it, nothing more... just a date, and when the date comes around if it needs to be pushed back, then fine just as long as they say 'we're trying for this date'.

Sure I'll wait till Feb for this device--if I have to wait that long and the HD2 comes out by then and the N900 still isn't released then obviously I'll go with a product that I know I can get my hands on...

I totally agree with, but at no time has Nokia given an 'exact date' just the run around, it'll be sometime in Oct, okay now mid Oct, no better yet somewhere around end of Oct, okay maybe Nov...

If you actually stand back and look at it, almost all the dates have come from us here in the forum, or Amazon, or Buy.com not Nokia.

Yeah, I'm disappointed. But I knew this was coming - their general website was stating 2nd Nov on Monday, and it was only a matter of time before the ordering department caught up. On the other hand, that's another week to concentrate on my thesis before I get distracted.

If this starts becoming a habit, I may have to cancel... my c905 is not holding charge and needs replacing pdq. :(

It would be nice, but it seems that nokia makes everything slow these days. Have you look at the quantity of touch phones that Samsung has released. Nokia used to be faster.
They should announce and put it to the market. I hope that they don’t end with the same infernal wait of the n97.

I am not sure how is this related to the delayed shipments of some N900 orders (amazon etc.) but Nokia has had some problems with getting enough components.

Seems like many people are waiting for a long time also for their iphone 3gs to arrive, at least here in Finland. For example buddy of mine has waited 3 months for his 3GS.

Can it be related to the shortage of Cortex-A8? Who knows.

I'm from Austria too. I work at a company which sells all kind of IT stuff. So i have ordered my N900 at the biggest Austrian telecommunication distributor 3 weeks ago. I call them every week and ask for the delivery date. This week the person who is responsible for Nokia products told me that they have changed the expected delivery date of their order to last week of october. At the beginning it was the first week of october and last week it was 3rd week of october. I think that most of the other shops also don't have any other informations.

I just received an email that my german retailer Cyberport has pushed the estimated delivery date back - into beginning of 2010 :(
reason: an announcement from their distributor.

Now i ordered from a second retailer ("Alternate") via "nachnahme" - you pay as the postman arrives at your door with the package. Alternate has October as expected delivery date. Strange.

Let's see who delivers first...

If it doesnt ship or get an official release date directly from Nokia by Sunday, im done and as nice as the phone is I will buy another. I dont care for companies that will accept money and not give specifics....to me once you allow retailers to start collecting money, you should know enough about the product by that point to give detailed and concrete release information.

I watched this thread from day one...didnt think we would make it to 98 pages of the run around, we are obviously some of nokias most advanced and loyal (if not that we still had faith enough to drop 600) customers to even know about this device, but yet we sit here having to play detective and put retailer clues together, when the phone is made by nokia. In the future get the device nice and ready and dont speak of it until you can send it, or atleast give people the "I have my $h!t together and know when my device can be shipped date"

Side Note: If the were 300 n900's given away at the summits, what the heck are about 290 people doing with thier phone, I can name on hand the new reviews/previews that came after the summit, cover the device people! And there are way less videos than expected online given the number of devices out now. Our patience have run so short I spotted a poem?!

Nokia never gave a date, so basing delays on a never announced date is not too practical.

I do a agree that it is ridiculous that Nokia gave out 300 phones and there are only a few feedback's posted anywhere- and most of those were BEFORE the phones were given out.

Possibly Nokia gave them the phones for direct feedback to Nokia, rather than a preview blitzkrieg to us.

If you are willing to drop it that easily you can't want the N900 very badly.

Only crappy retailers have accepted any money and that has little to do with Nokia. Most retailers will not take the money until the device ships so your argument of "once you allow retailers to start collecting money, you should know enough about the product by that point to give detailed and concrete release information" is completely false, because they aren't collecting any money.

Seriously, anyone who is willing to cancel because it hasn't been launched yet when it has only been said it would launch "some time in October" must have more serious issues. I sold my Xperia X1 to get the N900, I am stuck with an old Samsung that ONLY works as a phone, no other fancy stuff, but you don't see me complaining.

Where did you order it from? As far as I know, there are no companies (except for maybe buy.com, which from reviews seems a bit shady) that have taken money yet... Also, as I have stated before in this thread that most of the dates are speculations only. I've speculated end of October since the start of the thread, and it doesn't seem like you've taken that into consideration, but only taken into consideration the dates that seem to make you happy: mid October. That's kind of like selective reading, and only leads yourself into disappointment.

...

Our patience have run so short I spotted a poem?!

I really feel your frustration as I'm waiting eagerly for this phone too, but I think dishing it out at Nokia is wrong. To my knowledge (be free to correct me), Nokia has only given out one date since the beginning, which is week 44/ 26-31st of October. Now if they push back from that date, then I can see you getting frustrated.

Think about it this way...

If we were to collect all the speculated dates in this thread and plug it into excel, the median (I don't know if I'm using it right, haven't taken a stat class in a while) date would probably still be around mid - end of October, and taken into consideration that this thread is probably way biased and would skew the date quite a bit...

edit: Also I doubt that there's going to be any kind of announcement for the release during the weekend

hm, so i call today to Nokia Czech... and a lady picks up the phone and i ask... "Do you know what kind of keyboard will the Czech version have?" ..and she says.."QWERTZ, but localised..."..now what does that mean lol? And then she says without me asking.. "We will have the first batch last week of October. Anyone selling in Czech the device prior to that timeframe are fakes, bootlegs, so don't get these. And the price will be $849 (instead of $879)...hm...did she say something she shouldn't have or I don't know? Coz i phoned the same number a week ago and they didn't have a clue...

If you are willing to drop it that easily you can't want the N900 very badly.
I'm pretty sure Nokia only desire people to want the N900 just enough to pay the asking price for it :)

Both questions could have been answered with a search but

1) Yes
2) Yes

Here in the Netherlands the Nokia Online Store has a promotion (for several days still) which will give you 15% off on any nokia or accessory!

The promotion code = SOC15/1009

I had to cancel my pre-order and re-order for that, because they could not change my old order. But after they assured me they would be getting more then enough devices so that I would not recieve it any later, I let them do so, and they where happy to arrange it for me.

Saved me 90 Euros! Making the total 509 euro! :)

I read somewhere it was untill 21 october.
I wasn't planning to pre-order but the offer was too good.
The prices at launch for the N900 in the regular shops will be around 540 euro (looking at the current listings).

Ever hear of a pandora? They started taking money September 2008, its not shipped yet.

Hi.

This is my first post here.

I thought that since no one can get a official date and a reason for the N900 to be delayed, i'll just send an e-mail to one of the bosses at Nokia here in Norway, and hope to get an answer..

That i got.

Hei Jan-Ole

Be patient :)

God helg til deg også

Mvh
Bjørn Egil Brekke

If you guys don't understand a single word of Norwegian i will translate it to terrible english. lol. My written english is a bit rusty, but i'm working on it..

Mail as follows:

Hi Jan-Ole

Thanks for your interest in relation to the N900.
Understand that you and many others are looking forward to and is unpation. N900 is an amazing product.

The first party of the N900 to Norway will probably occur within a short time (2-3 weeks)

In our eyes, then N900 is not "delayed", but there has been much speculation about delivery times

But not long left now ... Be patient:)

Good weekend to you too

Regards
Bjørn Egil Brekke

Just came back from Nokia store here in Finland...

First time hands on with N900 and it's amazing... I guarantee any person waiting that it is going to be worth it! Even after reading and watching so many youtube videos on the n900, the phone does not disappoint!

edit: be careful when ordering, there's different keyboard layouts for different regions. The one I tested does have ÄÖÅ as standard.

Yes but we need Nokia to help us:

- Announce the N900 has been delayed till 2010
- Switch from Maemo to Windows XP
- Make all features pay per view so €1 every time you open the music player, €2 to answer a call
-Get Steve Jobs to do a youtube presentation on the N900.

That should do it.
