is there a way to avoid running X? I want to save memory and I can live with a command line environment. Can anyone suggest some solution?

thanks,
fahad

Hmm, I am not aware of one.

Second I'm not sure what input methods would be available. Touchscreen would not work.

Which tablet do you have?
If you have the N810 then should be able to rig something.

EDIT: beaten to it. That's what I get for loading tabs and then making a sandwich and coming back without reloading

Just played to much with my n800 recently :) ha ha ha

Of course keyboard should work. Maybe even a bluetooth / usb keyboard with n800 could work.

Does Maemo have console-mode support, though?

X doesn't really use much resources. You may want to explore getting rid of some other stuff (daemons?) first.

Yes, I have N810. Is there any support for console mode?

Are you wanting to be able to boot your N810 into the equivalent of "init 3" ?

If so, no, it won't do that without much hackery dackery doo.
