[Release] Mer/M5 Theme - Marina.

Hello there.
Now that plenty of you have the devices I need your help to test my theme I've been working on for a while. It's called "Marina", I made it as default-wannabe theme for Mer and Maemo 5.

Very well done, I like it.

However, the close and back buttons buttons are now missing on the windows. They're there but not visible. And switching themes made my browser crash (but I don't think that's the theme's fault).

Get the button issues right and promote it to extras-testing. It's well done. :)

The grey arrow in the URL entry box doesn't look good:

As you can see, the cog icon is slightly more "highlighted". Also, the Twitter and Facebook icons do not have a similar border like the Google does and there is no way of telling if you have pressed the Twitter/Facebook shortcuts as they do not "highlight". Finally, that shortcut bar with Ovi icons is missing an Ovi logo, but I think that it is the widget to blame there, and not your theme:

The RSS Feed Reader applet is a little messed up, and the Media Player Applet looks nicer when transparent:

You have had to reboot after theme change since there way theming on Maemo I don't see that changing anytime soon.

I tried it. I had to reboot after switching the theme - this is no good. :)

The theme is interesting, but the fact that there's no transparency on the home screen is a show stopper for me. If that changes, I would like to try an improved version.

Thank you for all your responses, after long christmas/ny delay - here's the new version of the theme.
Various bug fixes included - list is too long to show it here :)

It's not "dithered" yet so you can expect gradient "ladders" in some places, that's kind of OK.
If you'll find any bugs - feel free to post them here with screenshots - I still can't see the theme for myself for obvious reasons so I'm counting on your help only :)

Really? My SMS messages are all showing with proper black/dark gray background with white writing. No issues.

And my theme is all messed up, downloaded the new version and tought it would sovle the converstation colors, ended up with half the theme, and i have rebooted, reinstalled and even more reboots, still half theme

its marina / blue nokia, only the backgrounds and the statusbar (while not in window) is marina rest is blue nokia

Ok, finally we've found that dirty bug in colors.css made by Theme Maker, I hope it will be fixed ASAP.

where the style affects background colors (not the fonts).

Reworked desktop widgets, fixed usual theme bugs (conversations, ovi...) getting closer to release. Please test it and share your opinion!

Hi wazd,

I noticed some things:

Bugs:
- the 'gear' which comes into sight when editing the desktops is still 'extra highlighted' vertically (see one of the first screenshots in the thread)
- when changing presence (for example), the selected field is not highlighted at all. Neither font nor background

Personal remarks:
- highlighting is often (generally?) done by highlighting the writings on the button, not the button itself. I would prefer to highlight the button
- the fonts sometimes is a little too bold. I think this is the way it should be but as you asked for opinions, I give you mine. Would prefer the usual style
- The deletion confirmation field in e.g. the mailclient has a thin red border. I think red does not really fit and would prefer it blue or maybe gray

Of course these are only minor things compared to the overall style of your theme. I love the way buttons and the taskbar look. Great :)

sure :) I really want you to understand that this is only my opinion. I hope you do not feel like I would not honor your work, the opposite is the case.

Here we go, roughly in order of importance from important to cosmetic:

- When selecting buttons, not buttons but the writing gets highlighted, would prefer the buttons to be highlighted, especially as you got such an impressive blue color:

- Highlighting messages in Modest does not highlight the whole row but only placed a checkmark at the end of the line. Highloghting the whole row like default themes would e so nice:

- Changing presence settings does not show anything highlighted when you press online, besetzt or offline. Also the hard white frame around the status message should be blue like in mail compose (see later):

I think it looks good but not the last screenshot. Looks like ared shadow for the green font on the black background for the blue theme.
Also the green color for fonts on selected blue buttons does not fit from my point of view.

Wow, this is one classy theme! Thanks a lot for this - first theme I've seen that makes me want to switch from the built-on Digital Nature theme.

Few remaining bugs I've seen in the latest version from -devel (v. 0.95-1):

- Red-on-black font in text fields (see the address bar in the screenshot below for example) looks harsh and out of place in my opinion. What about a simple white font?

- The dark-blue-on-black font used to display the time and window title in the top title bar doesn't look very good on the device. It's a bit hard to read and doesn't fit well with the rest of the theme (see title bar in screenshot above).

What about a simple white font or a light-blue font that would match the color of the top-left task switcher button?


- It's hard to tell whether a button is disabled (greyed out) or enabled. See screenshot below for example.

The "Restore applications" button in the screenshot below appears to be the only enabled button since it's the brightest one. The other two buttons appear to be greyed out (disabled). Yet, it's actually the other way around. "Restore applications" is in fact the only disabled button on this screen and the other two buttons are enabled.

This is particularly problematic when there's only one button displayed on screen (e.g. in progress bars that have a "Stop" or "Cancel" button). I can never tell whether the button is enabled or greyed out as it's not obvious at all and I can never remember which color means what.

This might not be an easy one to fix. I'll let you play with the colors and see what would work better.

- In the Settings application, the font colors used to display the applets names made my head go really dizzy. I had to put down the phone and rest for a second or two before I could function again (I was in a dark room with full screen brightness which amplified the effect). I'm not usually sensitive at all to color tricks like this so this must be a very interesting combination you've found here.

This issue seems to be caused by the slight red shadow that can be seen in the screenshot. A plain white font would be better I think.

- This one has already been mentioned for a previous version I think but it's still there: there's a glitch in the way the icon in the desktop settings button is drawn. See button in screenshot below.

- The drop-shadow used to draw the text in system notification bars (see screenshot below) makes the text very hard to read and doesn't look good at all in my opinion. Would look a lot better without it.

About that "highlighted gear" bug btw:
There is a slight issue with it. It looks like this cause it takes just part of the black gradient of the top bar, not the whole element (as you can see, status bar has that black gradient in the and it looks alright), that's why the color doesn't fit the centre section. I can fix it by reducing gradient space, but it will make status bar look less cool :P

If that only affects this particular button, I wouldn't get too hung up on that. It's not a button that you see often (if at all). I wouldn't compromise on the whole status bar just to make this button look better.

I see. Hard decision... So its either the button fixed or the cool black gradient? Bummer :( No other way to fix is by having the 'gear' image with the black gradient?

But thinking of it a little more I tend to agree that its not worth changing the really cool look of the taskbar in case there is no other way.

I love the theme, but there are a couple of problems I noticed in apps such as FBReader and Gnumeric Spreadsheet. Both of them use a different type of menu that appears like a context menu (I suspect that it's due to non hildonized components). While using the default Nokia themes they appear ok, once switching to Marina the menu items do not appear anymore, and sometimes the menu background is transparent or appears selectively. My best guess is that something is missing from the theme?

Edit: same thing happens on long press on bookmarks and other contextual menu boxes (in gallery as well, etc)

i have 2 email related bugs to report to do with font colour
1st bug
when you go to your email inbox and long press on a header the font is same colour as the the little pop up box so you cant see text.
tried getting screensot of this but for some reason N900 wont let me capture using KB when the long press pop up is activated in email client
2nd bug
when i get new email pop up in task manager the font is dark orange like colour you can read top row just about but it gets darker at bottom of box and unreadable.
i will get screen shot of this one when next email comes through.

Very nice theme, thanks for your work. The only dislikes I have is a strange white haze over contacts on the desktop and the dark blue font on the black text input boxes.

Great theme, but I have a suggestion:

In the Conversations application, change the input text field font color to white instead of blue. The blue text on a black background is really hard to read when typing a new message. Might even change background to white with blue (or black text)?

confirmationred.jpg: Confirmation dialogs have a strange red border

desktop.jpg: No different colored lines for the calendar widget, ugly looking conversation inbox widget, small black vertical border between the status area and the provider name

desktopvolume.jpg (after update from 0.97 to 0.98 not everything was applied first, that's why the calendar widget and the conversation inbox widget look normal): volume bar completely white

Thanks for your work, very nice theme. I see two problems, 1) a white haze on contacts on desktop and 2) deskop edit icon has mismatch in vertical line color. Both can be seen in attached screenshot. Thanks

I can confirm the bug with contacts transparency. I didnt have the issue when using 0.98, but just installed 1.0 and the issue is there. Even after the reboot.

Ok, I've removed that ugly clock highlight.
And as I've mentioned 4 times above - "gear" bug is not really a bug, but a theme limitation, the only way to fix it is to remove that black gradient from the statusbar area. People decided that gradient is cooler than right-looking gear.

These are matter of taste, but I have really good taste :)
- Volume bar is bit too dark. How about same color as in load animation bar. Or same as in screen brightness "buttons".
- Configure desktop icon which popups top right looks weird. There is blue stripe behind it. Intentional?*
- can you configure systems popup windows (volume and messages)? Something else than yellow would be good.

I totally agree with you on this one the theme is looking very promising but white text on a light yellow background for notification really is illegible. Please please please fix ... I tried to edit the colors.config file and reassign black text to all white text but it did not change the text as indicated in the screenshot above

This is definitely the theme with the highest quality for Maemo5. Kudos to wazd who created it without even having a real N900 for reference!
The OVI store themes all look like crap compared to this.

Thanks for making the notification text black, this is much better and a lot easier on the eye.

I have also noticed while testing your theme Wazd that the call and reject buttons on the phone screen are very dark and could do with being much brighter, maybe make the buttons which are redish and green 60% lighter

The best theme to date. I disagree with the above request to make the call buttons brighter-the dark subtle feel comes from design choices like this.

FWIW, if these buttons are made brighter, I would go with no more than 10% lighter.

I am also among the group of people who would like to see a brighter call/reject button.

I had used N-series theme before and Maria is very good looking but I notice that after changing to Maria I am less confident about pressing the on-screen buttons, maybe the color of buttons in Maria faints vertically downwards.

Of course, this is something I will get used to... but still prefer a well defined boundary.

the theme is behaving eratically. the first time i applied it the colours were black test on a yellow background now after rebooting my phone the theme is now displaying yellow background with white writing which was illegible. needless to say i can't get the text colour back to black. any ideas as this makes thing much more difficult to read at a quick glimpse.

Which line in which file controls the text colour. I have various findings but none seem to work. I would have to do a process of illimination to find out

Not sure if this bug has been tracked yet but here it goes anyway.

there seems to be a problem in the calendar when in week view. If you click on an empty day then click on another empty day, the green highlight does not refresh but instead it leaves the cell still partially highlighted,well, around each of the 4 corners to be precise, has anyone else experienced this ?

i see this too. My corner colors are orange: different calendar color settings, but the bug is the same.

I also see a blue verticle line to the right of the title and where slots in any new or edit event screen. Not sure if that is a native/normal Maemo5 thing or Marina bug, but it's not necessarily bad.

As excellent as this theme is its very frustrating....it's almost there but not quite...lets have a real combined effort to sort it. It's previously been mentioned but what would really be great would be a an application where you could input the them and make small adjustments on the fly i.e colors and other various small tweaks.

Well, ThemeMaker would be such an application but does not yet seem to be there.
I really think it would be in Nokias best interest to provide a proper way to create and edit themes.

Regarding the bug (Maemo, probably, not the theme):
I am only changing between Marina and Dark Sky. Both are dark themes with dark fonts in the notifications. That might be why I do not really see the effects of this bug.

Installed the update. After reboot, text color is now dark--looks great -- both large email notifications and task manager ones. :)

Also, calendar week view corner thing fixed.

It's currently white on yellow and that's not so easy to read.

Perhaps you can use a color darker as yellow for the text font of a notification?

Don't know if this was already covered, but I get different desktop contact icon styles after each reboot.
Right now I have the rounded corners without the black frame, which I think is the intended appearance, sometimes I have a thin black frame with very slightly curved corners.

I only have two smallish comments to add:

1 - while I'm a fan of the understated tones used in the palette, they do make it a bit tricky to read in bright sunlight.

2 - when switching from my previous theme (Word City) to Marina, the icon at the right side of the address bar in Micro B became unresponsive and looked like this:

This was when installing 1.05 for the first time, as well as when I upgraded to 1.095.

Typing in a URL manually caused the address bar to 'refresh', and the proper icon appeared and responded to clicks as normal (and the black icon hasn't returned since).

* Agree with the sentiments on answer/reject and perhaps some other highlights being a tad bit subtle
* Like the look of the black notifications but would still prefer yellow (or other "highlight" color, cyan perhaps?). They don't stand out as they are and are easily missed if you have several applications running. To be picky they don't match banners and system messages either.

This theme should set the standard for N900 themes, including OEM.

Well luckily it's easy to place there any image you want. So fire up your image editor and draw the background you like in 800x480 pixels and place it under:
/usr/share/themes/themenamedirectory/backgrounds/lockslider.png

Its concerning the address bar on the mircrob browser when using this theme marina.

I noticed recently that the arrow that points downwards on the far right of the address bar has been changed. It now looks like a black square with an arrow in it?

You won't believe this but i've just opened the browser up to take a screenshot and the arrow looks normal again. Lol i had this problem for a few days (tried reinstalling, uninstalling, rebooting etc) and nothing fixed it. Must just be a bug or pot luck :D

I have this problem (although I hesitate to even call it that).

I can't figure out what triggers it, but I have discovered that entering any text in the URL entry box will cause the proper graphic to display, which probably explains why it looks normal for you now ;)

I think maybe it's related to clearing the browser cache, but could easily be wrong.

I'll see if I can post a screenshot a bit later on, but in the meantime, I think it might be the same issue that qwerty12 reported earlier in the thread (although my arrow doesn't look exactly like the one in his screenshot):

anyways something I noticed is that the notifactions thumbnails in dashboard are hard to read to due the brownish color of the font being on a yellow background...is it a known bug?? or is it supposed to be like this?

Secondly this is the best theme by far, most themes seem to slow the OS but with this it's as snappy as anything. If I could make a suggestion maybe a light blue or white instead of yellow notification bar, and maybe some 3D style top-left and top-right navigation buttons?

Ok, I finally remembered to take a screenshot of this problem:

As you can see, the downward facing arrow at the end of the URL bar is surrounded by black.

I can't figure out what triggers it, but it seems as though there's a graphic that's not being loaded properly until you enter some text into the URL entry box -- That causes the display to refresh and the proper graphic to load.

Just overwrite the files in usr/share/themes/marina/images with those in the folder and you're there ;)

the gear on it looks weird.. looks like its been copy pasted
and custom icons for battery *not apps* and menu effects etc would be cool too :D

Ok the easiest way to do this, is for you to read this post first:

After you install Open ssh and WinSCP, download the zip file and read the txt file attached so you know where to place the font files. You will need a wireless router for this to work.

I really like the new background for the clock and Media Player but as soon as you select something the hover effect displays an ungly black background instead of a blurred/brighter background than before.

Well, I've released 1.206 version that should fix this, but alpha channel still doesn't work for clock overlay :(

Well, I'm not sure what have you tried to tell, but Marina comes with looped wallpapers set, that's not a bug. You can reset your wallpaper thru "wallpapers" menu.

1st Themes were in /usr/share/themes
2nd Themes were in opt/usr/share/themes
Now /opt/maemo/usr/share/themes

marina is the only theme in /opt/maemo/usr/share/themes

I did change the wallpapers in the background menu, so that should fix it. Still curious why you are in /opt/maemo/usr/share/themes??

Because that's the path where maemo-optify (partly) puts the theme. You'll get into that folder by going to /usr/share/themes/marina since it's symlinked to /opt/maemo...

wazd, with PR1.2 you can comment out the maemo-optify line @ /debian/rules -file since the whole /usr/share/themes is now symlinked to /opt.

I tried disabling maemo-devel and installing a previous version of marina but that didn't help, the theme switcher will not open unless marina is uninstalled.

Any ideas? I really miss this theme. :(

Hi Wazd,

Thanks for this great theme bro, I love it and the only one I use.
Just having a small problem, as you can see in the attached pic, phone no's in contact details are in a quite dark blue color and makes it very hard to see and select a phone no if they have several cell no.
Is it possible to change this color? or if you do not prefer to alter your theme, can I change it on my N900 if you tell me how to?

I use your theme, and removed the background color of icons on main pages. Problem is the "phone" icon is also blue with slight difference from the main background image. Is there a way to change the color of this icon? or can I replace it with an icon of mine? (if you don't mind telling me where to find the png file). Thanks

Any chance you can make a control panel for this theme a la the Plastic folks have? I went to Black Plastic because it manages Font changes perfectly. I never could get the fonts to change manually. I don't like the Black Plastic theme near as much as the Marina theme. It's ahhhh, too Plastic'y for me!

virtual keyboard is missing shift and backspace arrows,
also key edges are not shown, which makes spacebar invisible
keyboard menu (cut, copy, paste) are unreadable

corners of context menu are transparent (missing a few pixels)

gear icon for configuring desktop seems transparent, but it's button is not.

application back button might look [fit] better if used strait instead of curved line

It should contain some fixes for the above problems. Maybe you are brave enough to install this.

the dev release fixes a lot of glitches, but it causes performance issues for me [opening/closing animation lock, menu responsiveness] :confused:
tried rebooting, clean installing the theme...
reverting to 1.095 helps

the unlock slider doesn't slide to the right edge
but looks nice ;)

player/clock background is too much [reverting users attention from the task], the old one looked more sleek/elegant
