View Full Version : N900 and Google Voice Guide

So some of you asked that I put together a guide about Google Voice and how to use it with the N900, so now that I'm sober from last night here we go.
First off, the N900 is going to have some kind GV support, either already coming built into the phone or through some kind of widget. If you watch the N900 videos of people playing with the contacts section, you'll notice there is a part where it says 'Google Voice', now this could just be a simple section ( but doubtful ), or it could be more. Okay so moving forward to the guide.
GV & N900
Google Voice is an application that allows you to combine all your numbers ( work, home, cell ) and tie it to a single number you choose through GV ( the number you choose can be changed at anytime ). GV can also be used on our wonderful N900 for visual voicemail ( explained in a bit ).
Switching Phones during Calls
So when someone calls your GV number all your phones will ring and lets say you answer on your cell but your battery is about to die. Simply press * on your cell, and your other phones will ring--go over and pick up one of your other phones, then end the call on your cell. The person on the line will never know that you switched phones.
Recording Calls
If you're on line with a pesky customer service person or just need to record the call ( abide by state laws ofc ) for whatever reason simply press 4 and you conversation will be recorded, and when you're done recording just hang up or press 4 again. After you've updated your inbox your recording should be their ( although I've noticed it sometimes takes an hour for it to happen.
Voicemail Eavesdropping
We all love to hit the reject button when someone calls whom we don't want to talk to, so instead we wait for their message. Well here's one of the best parts, simply hit the 2 button, wait a few secs and you'll start hearing their message as they are leaving it for you. As they are leaving the message if you hear something that is important just hit * and you'll be connected...kind of cool also if you want to mess with people as they are leaving the message.
N900 Visual Voicemail
Setting up GV to be used as visual voicemail on your N900 ( credit for this goes out to iKneaDough ). When someone calls and leaves a message on your GV account, it gets transcribed, emailed and text'd to you with the entire message. To set up the visual voicemail on your N900 using T-Mobile USA simply type in *004*yourGVnum# and hit send. This way all calls that would have been sent to your cell voicemail will go directly to your GV voice mail thus being transcribed, text'd and emailed to you ( you now have visual voicemail thanks to GV ). To take it off your account simply enter *004* and hit send--your original voice mail settings are back to itself. T-Mobile gives you 500 voicemail forwarding minutes a month, though if you have your GV number in your MyFav5 I don't know if it counts, maybe it does.
Unlimited Cell Minutes
Never use your N900 cell minutes ever again. T-Mobile has MyFav5, simply make one of these your GV number. When you call your GV number, it'll ask you for your pin, after you've entered it, you'll be told if you wish to make a call press 2. After you've pressed 2, enter the number you wish to call, area code first and BAM you've saved your minutes. Give out your GV number, so when someone calls, it goes to your cell and you're covered under the MyFav5 so again...minutes not used!
Connecting
We've seen the full Google Wave being run on the N900, GV is nowhere as intensive as Wave so running the full version on your phone shouldn't be a problem, but if it is just go to the GV mobile phone version of the site.
Everything Else
GV when logged in will also allow you to place calls and sms from your comp, as well as email all saved phone recordings, voice mails.
Caller specific voicemail recordings. This allows you to assign each specific number with it's own voice mail recording. EX: Jessica calls, I don't pick up, my voice mail recording says " Hey Jess I'm at the law library, phone is off just meet me here". It's a specific voicemail for a specific person and/or group of people.
Call Screening, unknown numbers and blocked id's. Phone isn't in your contacts or it's blocked, caller will be prompted to give their name, and after being notified you'll be prompted accept or reject.
Do Not Disturb. I'm going away for the weekend, so from 6PM Friday till 7AM Monday all calls go directly to voicemail and the caller is notified ( notification works 50% of the time, sometimes it tells you when I'll be back, sometimes not ) when you'll be available again.
Call widgets. Embed a direct link into your blog or website, or email. So when someone clicks on it, the caller is automatically connected to you.
Conclusion
All in all, GV has great potential ( just so long as the FCC investigation doesn't penalize them ) for us all. Never use minutes, never miss a call, and my favorite--Visual Voicemail on your N900.
GV is going to take an already awesome phone that is the N900 and make it 20 times more uberepicpwn.
We've set up a thread for GV invites. So if you have them, and want to give them out to the Maemo community please head over and post that you have some--same goes if you would like an invite. Invites will go to people who actually take part in the discussions we have on the various threads, so if you register yourself just for an invite and thats it, please go elsewhere.

Very Useful thanks. Hope when I make a international calls from N900 it will use Google Voice automatically like it does in android phones, or may be have a settings to do that. That would come really handy and save a lot of money.

I read on LifeHacker that you had to change a GV setting to show the GV # when taking a call. But I've left it on showing whatever # is calling, theoretically since GV is the middleman between calls it shouldn't matter. But anyone test it themselves?
The problem with setting the GV setting to showing the GV # all the time is you have no idea who is calling you unless you leave presentation settings on and then it will tell you their # or name (if they followed directions) after you answer the phone.

What programs are you running on your tablet, spinnukur?
Is it just Dial Central, RTCOMM beta 2 or something else?

It's two settings. When someone calls you, you can either have it setup to show the person's number who is calling you, or you can show your GV number. That way you know the person calling you is actually calling you GV number, in case you only wanted them to have your GV number. It sucks because you can only have one turned on but at the same time, can also save you if you don't want that person having your cell, home, or work number. I just leave my setting on 'show caller phone number'.

Yes, I know. But what the Lifehacker post was saying was you need to have it on the show GV # in order for the incoming calls to be free. Though I was wondering if you could just leave it on the "show caller phone #" and still get incoming for free. Logically it should be yes since GV is the middle-man regardless. But I was wondering if someone had actually tested this.

Yes, until GV actually opens up to the general public you need an invite to use GV. Using GV on the N900 is still the same software as if you were using it on your computer.

Could someone with an N900 please test the following and see if it should be added to the summary:
Receive and Send calls with Google Voice using only Data, not Voice Minutes
Google Voice Supports connecting calls made to Gizmo/SIPphone accounts. You can register for an SIPphone account here:
https://my.gizmo5.com/gizmo5/app?class=MySip;proc=start
Once you have that set up, you can add the SIP account to the N900. Follow the directions here:
https://my.gizmo5.com/gizmo5/app?class=MySip;proc=start
Finally, go to the Google Voice website and add your "747" number to the account. If you are in an area with strong 3g coverage or always around wifi, it may be wise to disable your normal phone number from call forwarding, that way, you don't get two incoming calls at the same time. When you receive calls, you will only be charged data. To send calls, you can use the Google Voice website and select "send to Gizmo". Again, you will only be charged for data.
---
I kind-of prefer this solution to the myfaves one. First of all, you can buy the individual 300 plan rather than the MyFaves 300 plan and save $10 per month. Also, I remember the T-mobile website saying that only certain phones supported MyFaves - is this incorrect or does the N900 have some sort of MyFaves software barried in it?

I don't think certain phones support MyFaves, it's more a plan thing than a phone thing (e.g. you tell TMobile through their website which #s you want to be on the Fav 5 plan).

MyFavs5 is a plan, it doesn't matter what phone you have. I currently have my E90 on T-Mobile till my N900 gets here and MyFavs5 works just fine.
Also on another note, GV does work data only. Through the browser in my phone I went to the GV Mobile Site, and yep, it works like a charm.

Hi,
I just got a GV acct courtest of the GV request thread. Thanx Thommy!! I had some test calls made to me. The caller ID info is passed perfectly. That's nice, but ATT has a service called A-List, that's like my Favs, etc. In my call log on my phone, it also shows the caller ID/Contact info. Since the call is being tagged with that caller ID info and that's not the GV number in my A-List, will these calls count against my minutes even though they were placed to the GV number? I confused about how that works.
Thanx!

You might try logging into Google Voice via the web, going to "Settings", choosing the "Calls" tab, and switching "Caller ID" from "Display caller's number" to "Display my Google Voice number".

I have updated Dialcentral to work on the n900 and several people are already enjoying it (please try it out and vote on it so it can move from extras-testing to extras).
I have plans and have started working on a telepathy connection manager for GoogleVoice which would allow integrated googlevoice support in the contacts, conversations, and dialpad (hopefully). Various issues with Dialcentral have slowed me down on it though. If someone else is working on this I'd like to know so I don't have to duplicate their efforts.

You do have to set the GV acct to show your GV number, or else you get charged for regular minutes used. The bad part is you won't get caller ID (all calls show up as Google Voice from my phonebook), the good news is you don't use up minutes since it's a myFaves. Last month I used 0 regular minutes, even though I used about 400 myFaves.
According to what I just read myFaves is going away with Project Dark, but users will be grandfathered in. If you want it, make up your mind in the next few days.
No minutes used, free SMS via my GV app, what's not to love?

It's annoying not having caller ID, but it's worth the hassle of not worrying about going over on minutes. If you have my phone number you are someone I would answer for anyway. With GV you can also set it to force blocked calls to announce their name before you take the call.
I tested it in the sense that when I first got it I had it turned to pass the number through and it ate up my minutes like a regular call. If you are going to do that, may as well have them call direct and avoid GV.

I use an Iowa t-mobile affiliate. For an extra $5 a month I have free incoming calls, so with the data plan (which I wanted anyways, allows access to dialcentral or the google voice website) I essentially have unlimited outgoing minutes as well. :)
So unlimited data, incoming, outgoing calls for $45/month. It would be a good deal with they had 3G in the area. >:|

No idea as I don't have the phone. As stated in the OP, and in early video's we all saw GV in contact's section.
Just like the original post I didn't say it was absolute that GV would be in the N900. If Nokia took it out, they took it out--we've all seen the videos showing GV in contacts, so it's not some kind of conspiracy with just your N900, les... :p
Run GV from your browser, Wave runs fine and that's more intensive then Voice. Setup your visual voicemail as per the instructions, with transcription via email or text that way you have visualvoicemail, then try Voice directly from the browser and tell us how it responds.

In any promotional things I did not notice anything about GV integration. I am the maintainer of Dialcentral and that is available in testing form only for the n900. Contact me or join the discussion on the Dialcentral thread (http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?p=402126#post402126) if you are willing to take the risks of enabling premature software by enabling testing.
I am working on another project called The One Ring which is GV integration for the n900. It is still in heavy development and not ready for any use outside of debugging. I hope to have it ready for testing within the month.

About Visual Voice Mail.
This is one of my favorite features - the only challenges is I want it to be client based - eg the voice files live on the device itself. I used to use a service called callwave which would send them to you as an MMS or Email, with a voice transcript, caller info in the subject field (with the file attached). then i could listen to it at my leisure w/ or w/o a signal, and not have to wait for it to load ota.
Does anyone know if this service exists? I have searched on google and this site.

Early marketing videos as well as videos from the '300', we saw quite a few with a GV section in contacts ( not saying that means automatic integration ), as well as using GV in browser ( again not saying automatic integration ). You also have to remember we were basing everything off of early prototypes as well as the '300' when everything was typed up. We were hoping since Skype was already coming with the phone, GV would also be integrated within the device.
This entire guide was written before the final device came out, and at no time did I assure that GV was a for sure thing that would definitely be in the device... I don't wanna sound rude, but people need to read 'clearly' that I said it could be in their or could just be nothing.
Thanks for the head's up on your programs for GV, the more it's integrated the better.
Yeah, GV already does the SMS and email thing, but it would be cool if you could access the GV voicemail page directly from the desktop of the phone via a gadget or w/e, since everything is organized by date, time, as well as having it transcribed along with an audio file. Hmmm....interesting project.

i am using gvmax (www.gvmax.com) to forward my texts to google talk. this integrates them nicely into the "conversations" app and allows you to call the person via GV right from "conversations."

I'm sorry for not specifying but GVMax Pro is the version that doesn't require giving out your credentials -- unlike GVMax Lite. Pro is a one time $25 fee. And as far as the open source goes, he just sent this email which explains new features not yet advertised on the site:
<email>A new version of GVMax (4-0-0) has been released to existing customers (not yet publicly released).
This is a major upgrade that contains many new features which I hope you will like.
Here are some of the major new features:
- Voicemail notifications
You can now get notifications of new voicemails in much the same way you get SMS notifications.
These notifications show the Google transcribed text for the voicemail, as well as providing a
link to a recording of the voicemail.
- Make GoogleVoice calls from within your IM program
In a chat window simply type 'ggc' to initiate a GoogleVoice call to the GVMax contact you are chatting with.
Alternatively type 'ggc {number}' to call the given number via GoogleVoice
- Bulk SMS sending
You can now send an SMS to a group of people.
The members of the group are derived from your GoogleContacts groups.
You can do this from within the IM program and/or via email
- Better error handling and logging
- OpenSource
As of this version GVMax is open source. Hopefully this will get more people involved in adding new features etc.
- Check out the User Manual (a link in the application) for full details of all features.
If you were already using version 3-0-0 then your application should have been upgraded automatically. For those of
you who are still on 2-1-0 I will be contacting you directly with instructions on how to upgrade.
Last week Google released a new version of their SDK and that has introduced some instability to their platform for
applications running on older versions. This meant I have had to bring forward the release of 4-0-0 and
unfortunately have not quite finished polishing it (expect another minor release in a week or so).
The one thing I have not had time to do so far and which might be of interest is how to setup your application
to receive voicemail notifications. Here is what you need to do
In the same way that you created an email filter on your GMail account to forward SMS to your application so will
you need to do for voicemail.
1- Login to GMail
2- Click on 'Settings' (top right of screen)
3- Click on 'Filters' tab
4- Click on 'Create a new filter'
5- In the 'From' box type: voice-noreply@google.com
6- Press the 'Next Step' button
7- Select the 'Forward it to' checkbox and type: vm@{appname}.appspotmail.com (replacing {appname} with your application name).
8- If you don't want a copy of the original email from Google then select the 'Delete It' checkbox
9- Press the 'Create Filter' button
I am hoping to create a screencast detailing this soon, in the mean time feel free to contact me if
you run into problems with this.</email>

Can someone please figure out how to access this app just like accessing Google Latitude on the N900.

if you install the HideUserAgent app from the app manager, you can set your browser to use the iphone's user agent:

It use to be that if you left the normal caller ID on it wouldn't use minutes (if you had your GV # in your Fav 5). However, it seems TMobile changed it a while back (sometime last Winter) so now you have to change the setting to display the GV # to use the Fav 5 unlimited minutes.

Thank you very much. Does anyone know of a Data Only plan on T-Mobile? I have SIP working really well on my N800, and GVMax takes care of all my texts. So, all I would need on the N900 is steady 3G.
Anything better than paying $50+ for the minimum minutes + MyFaves + Smartphone Data plan?
Edit: Found a $39.99 unlimited data plan. No voice plan required.
Edit 2: While talking to T-Mobile, they told me that my phone ONLY qualifies for the $10 Unlimited Internet. So I am now paying $39.99 for 300 minutes + MyFaves and $10 for Unlimited Data. I have been using SipSorcery + G5 + GV to make calls flawlessly. I was originally using GVMax to have free SMS. But I am now testing out the Google Voice integration. Everything is going pretty well so far.
When I call my call my google voice number, GV forwards my call back to me. I am trying to call Canada. Google Voice doesn't ask me to enter '2' to input out going number. Calling to Canada is free. How do I do this in Nokia n900?

I finally got selected to get Google Voice (sorry, no invites to pass along) but I had a devil of a time getting the calls to properly forward. Following the onscreen steps was easy, and my phone was registered with google voice. But actually getting the calls to go to Google voice proved to be more difficult. At first I figured it was just a matter of "bouncing" my voicemails using the call forwarding function in settings>phone, but its not that simple. Instead, one needs to send the call forwarding command (prefix *004* on T-mobile).
I've updated to PR 1.2, but i got an error message when I tried to send the command. After some vigourous googling (hehe) I found that I needed to add a little command to the call-ui.ini file in the /home/user/.osso folder.
Navigate to that file, open it in the text editor of your choice and simply add:
[supplementary]
ssc=1
(you did make a backup of the original file just in case, right?)
Just to be on the safe side, I rebooted the n900 and then tried sending the command again (*004*GVnumber#). The first time, I think my reception wasn't very good, but the command went through on the second try. I still cannot just hit "voicemail" to get to Google voice, but i have GV set as its own contact with a shortcut on my desktop.
Meme, are you calling your new Google number, or the Google Voice number (the one that functions as your new voicemail) If you call in to the voice mail, once you enter your pin you can hit 2 for calling out again. i believe the "google number" is essentially like a forwarding number that will ring any associated phones.

That file doesn't exist on my fresly flashed N900 with PR1.2... and creating it, ~/.osso/call-ui.ini, with the suggested content appears not enough to make service codes on my handset work... my telco is T-mobile.

Hey all. Got a question for someone.
I have a T-Mobile prepaid cell phone that's a real piece.
I only use it for emergencies though.
I have it so that my cell phone will go off when receiving a text message.
I never read these messages on my cell phone but it looks as though I still get charged for each of them.
Is there any way to get a notice of an incoming text message for free without being online? I have an N800.
I don't think I get charged for receiving a phone call on my cell if I don't answer.
So yeah, I'm hoping there might be some type of Google Voice settings that I can change so I'm not getting charged all the time like I am.
I tend to get about 50 text messages a day.
Thanks. :)

Short answer NO,but you can have the text messages forwarded to a Gmail account and if you have a push mail service with TMO you could check your mail.

Of course yes, Google Voice will call your cell phone - that is the who essense of Google Voice.
But point is poeple will have to call your Google voice number (not your cell number) and then in GV you set up your Cell number as the forwarding number.
In that case when anybody call your GV number, your cell phone will also ring. You can setup multiple phones as forwareded numbers - like have both Cell phone and Home phone ring when you are at home and have only Cell phone ring on Weekdays when you are away from home .. and so on.
I sthis what you asked for ?

No. this isn't what I'm asking for.
I already have my house, cell and tablet tied together with Google Voice.
The thing is, I'm rarely online.
I currently have dial-up at home, and since that's an analog signal, it can't be used with a wireless router.
One of my friends accidentally sent a text message to my house phone instead of my Google Voice number a couple of times where a computer spoke what she typed.
I'm looking for something just like that, where my cell phone rings but a text isn't sent to it so to save on constantly paying out money on prepaid cell phone cards.
I don't bother ever reading the messages on my cell phone so I don't quite get why I still have to pay for each of them.
I'm just looking for a creative workaround so that I can be notified when receiving a text without being online.
Hope that straightens out the request on this. :)
I just got it set up .. Works great .. but how do you send the code to get N900 Visual Voicemail . I tried with sms and error code . any help on this ? I saw that you have to do some kind of folder . Not to tech savy . please explain step by step.. Sorry so dumb
Addison
06-25-2010, 11:35 PM
Okay, there's an advanced setting in Google Voice that I missed as to not send a text message to a cell phone.
I guess that should be good enough.
But still, it would be nice to know when I get SMS messages without having to pay for them when not being online.

Well, why don't you put that SIM card into your N900? Then you give everyone your GV number. I use The One Ring (which is awesome) for texting. They text my GV number and I get it on my N900-prepaid-SIM, even if I'm at the grocery store.

@Addison
I've been making calls to Costa Rica with GV.
Open Gizmo5 and login. Wait for the success sound.
Open web browser and go to https://google.com/voice
Click add credit and add $10 using your credit/debit card.
Australia is $0.02/min to call landline, $0.14/min to call cellphone, and $0.17/min to call satellite phone.
* Click green Call button,
** click the flag and scroll down to Australia (+61). input the local number 4582154XX
** click the phone to call with scrollbox and choose your Gizmo5 number (assuming you have already "paired" it)
* Click connect
Your Gizmo5 application will now ring, I have set mine to auto-answer but it doesn't by default, click the green Accept button that will appear on-screen.
It should now ring/call the person.
If you prefer to use DialCentral over the website just dial 011614582154XX
011 is the US call-out/international code
61 is the Australia international call-in code
If you are unsatisfied with the call quality (my N810's microphone echoes on the other end) and you don't mind using "anytime" minutes on a cellphone...Dial your Google Voice number (doesn't have to be a phone that you have paired), when you get to voicemail then dial * you will be prompted for your PIN number. dial 1234 (or whatever your PIN is, don't press #). Then press 2. Then 011614582154XX#. This will be a local call to a mobile phone (Google) and then Google will take money out of your prepaid account with them to connect you to the international number.
Minutes/amount spent per call shows up in GV history AFTER the call has ended.

Its best if you post questions about The One Ring directly on the thread (http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?p=488632) so all of the avid users can help me out in helping you so I can spend more time on development.
For people not on your GV contact list, in the conversations app go to the menu and select "Send IM To..." (I think is what it is called) and you should be able to select GV and enter a number in manually.
